Guests: Toronto Star journalists Ben Mussett and Omar Mosleh A Toronto Star investigation uncovered a troubling loophole inside Meta's advertising system. Reporters Ben Mussett and Omar Mosleh found illegal drugs being advertised and sold to Canadians through paid Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram. With one click, the Star was linked to online shops offering cocaine, Oxycodone, MDMA, Xanax, ketamine and more, and discovered how easily these drugs could be ordered and shipped. The investigation raises urgent questions about Meta's ad moderation, platform safety and how drug traffickers are exploiting automated tools to reach users. Meta, the tech giant that owns Facebook and Instagram, says it has "zero tolerance" for the ads and works to find and remove the illegal drug posts. In this episode, we unpack what happened when Star journalists tested the system themselves, why Meta's detection tools aren't stopping illicit drug ads, and who these ads are targeting the most. Send us a textThe Award-Winning Story of Illegal Drugs and Famous Baseball Stars On DVD and Digital Platforms on June 4, 2019"Another masterpiece of wild and woolly Floridiana from Florida's documentarian laureate." - Vincent Mancini, FILMDRUNKSome of the biggest U.S. sports stars come under harsh scrutiny in the eye-opening - and queasily funny - SCREWBALL , which reveals the real story behind baseball's notorious drug scandal. The film, by award-winning documentarian Billy Corben, will be released on Greenwich Entertainment DVD and digital platforms on June 4, 2019.Recounting the high-profile doping scandal that rocked Major League Baseball, director Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys, Magic City Hustle) takes us into the surreal Miami underworld that provided performance-enhancing drugs to Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and other star players. They say South Florida is a sunny place for shady people and this is certainly true of steroid peddler Anthony Bosch and his most notorious client, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. While Bosch's medical credentials may be lacking, his storytelling skills are first-rate as he hilariously details the rise and fall of his "health clinic," including mob connections, financial chicanery, his cocaine habit and Rodriguez's eccentric behavior. The documentary plays like a madcap Floridian crime comedy in the vein of Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen and the Coen Brothers while it raises serious questions about the ethics of professional sports. Powerful interests would be happy to let this story slip from memory, but SCREWBALL makes it unforgettable.(From 6-4-19)

Since the Treaty of Munster and the Peace of Westphalia combined to bring peace to the Holy Roman Empire and create the Nation-State in 1648, some confederations and multinational states have evolved into empires. An Empire is a political unit made up of several territories and peoples, typically established through conquest, and marked by a dominant centralized government and subordinate peripheries. And regardless of religion, political organization, or ideological framework, all of our modern empires share a common source of colonial expansion and political power: Drugs. From the 1790s to the present, the stories of Imperial territorial expansion, wealth accumulation, and wartime conquests have paralleled the story of illegal, recreational, and addictive drugs. In this episode of Renegade Files we will explore the ways that drugs are used to first build, and then control nations. Along this seedy journey we'll encounter an unlikely cast of interconnected characters including the tobacco and alcohol companies, big sugar, network television, big pharma, Gangster Rap executives, the prison industrial complex, 60s counterculture hero's, and the CIA. We go deep on this one, to illuminate the links that make up what amounts to a generations-long psyop created to weaken oppositions, addict and divide populations, delude individuals, and ultimately convince free people to trade their freedom for security. The information here moves fast and connects quickly, and my plan is to leave no stone unturned. In this episode we're going to explore a few serious topics that will cause us to look at some very familiar subjects in totally new ways. You know that's something I enjoy doing. So join me my friend, for this episode of Renegade Files, and prepare to have your mind blown, as together we explore the ways Drug-Built Empires Become authoritarian, with a deep look into illegal Drugs: Weapons of the Deep State. Not that we're all just sitting around using each and every you-know-what kind of illegal drug, but we live in an interesting time where some things are legal, others aren't, and then some haven't been but maybe will become legal before too much longer. How does any of this impact your life? What should your faith have to say about the things you do or don't put in your body? What if it's a little simpler and more complex, all at the same time?
