One of my favorite albums this year is Eleven Fugues For Sodium Pentothal by Adam Wiltzie. https://adamwiltzie.bandcamp.com/album/eleven-fugues-for-sodium-pentothal   Adam has an extensive discography of work - ranging from solo albums & soundtracks to work in the groups Aix Em Klemm, The Dean Texan, and A Winged Victory For The Sullen. But he is most well known for his work as part of Stars of the Lid, one of the best ambient duos/groups of all time.   After listening to his new album I hauled out some of his other work and loved it all over again. So this mix is the result of me binging Adam's music for the last month or two. It's a great combo of ambient & modern classical. https://adamwiltzie.com/   Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00.   Adam Wiltzie - Tissue Of Lies (Eleven Fugues For Sodium Pentothal 2024) 02:42.   A Winged Victory For The Sullen - So That the City Can Begin to Exist (Atmos 2014) 06:54.   Aix Em Klemm - Sparkwood And Twentyone (Aix Em Klemm 2000) 13:28.   Stars Of The Lid - Articulate Silences Part 1 (and Their Refinement of the Decline 2007) 18:40.   Adam Wiltzie - the endless battle of the maudlin ballade part 3 (travels in constants, volume 24 2015) 21:06.   A Winged Victory for the Sullen - A Minor Fifth Is Made Of Phantoms (The Undivided Five 2019) 24:18.   The Dead Texan - The Struggle (The Dean Texan 2004) 29:10.   Aix Em Klemm - The Luxury Of Dirt (Aix Em Klemm 2000) 35:00.   Stars Of The Lid - Dust Breeding (1.316)+ (Avec Laudanum 1999) 40:40.   Adam Wiltzie - We Were Vaporised (Eleven Fugues For Sodium Pentothal  2024) 43:23.   The Dead Texan - Taco Me Manque (The Dead Texan 2004) 45:25.   Stars Of The Lid - The Lonely People(Are Getting Lonelier) (The Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid 2001) 55:18.   A Winged Victory For The Sullen - All Farewells Are Sudden (A Winged Victory For The Sullen 2011) 62:20.   end

We celebrate the first day of school, the intro that Greg made when the Red Nots play Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Ciri's fantastic Summer Recap 2023 video. Then it's on to the show…First up, Nick shares his profound love and appreciation for the music of Stars of the Lid and its co-founder Brian McBride, who passed this week at the age of 53. McBride met co-founder Adam Wiltzie in 1993 at a party in Austin and have performed as Stars of the Lid for the last 30 years. Composed and performed on two guitars, the duo drew out incredibly rich and emotional melodies over the course of minutes or entire albums. Their final albums The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid (2001) and And Their Refinement of the Decline (2007) are worthy of good workday listen. Thank you for sharing your art Mr. McBride, you will be missed.Songs:Stars of the Lid - “Music for Twin Peaks #30, Pt 1” Stars of the Lid - “Even If You're Never Awake” Greg got a called from one of his earliest L.A. friends, Brittany, to play a house party this weekend in L.A. Having lived in Greg's home country of France for a few years, Brittany became enamored with Yé-yé, a style of pop music that emerged in France in the early 1960's. Greg is quite familiar with this genre, as it's the music his mom listened to when he was growing up. We dive into the genre as Greg reckons and accepts the fact that his Mom's music turns out to be hip after all.Songs:Jacqueline Taieb - “Le Cœur Au Bout Des Doigts”Jacques Dutronc - “Les cactus”Brigitte Bardot - “Contact”Forty years ago this month, Tom Waits released Swordfishtrombones. Twenty years later in a Baltimore apartment, Jay was introduced and immediately fell in love. While he still bemoans the time lost before first hearing it, he's made up for lost time and counts the reasons why Mr. Waits music remains so appealing to this day. The 1983 album has been remastered and we discuss a recent interview with some major artists that share Jay's affection [The Guardian].Songs:Tom Waits - “Underground”Tom Waits - “16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought Six”Tom Waits - “Clap Hands”Tom Waits - “Temptation”

Dustin O'Halloran is an American pianist and composer with five acclaimed solo albums under his own name.  He released his first EP Sundoor with renowned classical musical label Deutsche Grammophon in 2019, and followed that up with his solo album Silfur in 2021.    He's also a member of the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen with Adam Wiltzie, and they released their album The Undivided Five with Ninja Tune in 2019 and self-released their latest album Invisible Cities in 2021.    He's the winner of a 2015 Emmy Award for his main title theme to Amazon's comedy drama Transparent (2014–2017), and was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a Critics Choice Award for his score to Lion (2016), written in collaboration with Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka).   We get into many topics such as the old analog vs digital debat, habits at the piano, inner timing, the music of Hans Otte, the power of the ocean, icelandic breakfast, how to record the piano, working to picture and much more :)                ________   In the nitty I recreate the magical oscillator offset that's found in the wonderful and soon to be legendary Yamaha CS70.  It was inspired by this video of floating points in his studio, demonstrating this very thing.  It's been a treat to remake in software and I run down how it was done.  The most important piece of the puzzle was scaling the pitch wheel (actually 2 pitch wheels) to not be smooth but quantized to the intervals used in the CS70. To do this I used a Max for live device called “Bend Sequence” from Heaps of Bleeps. I really think this series is tremendous. I wasn't aware of his work but it's some great max programming and works so well. Here's the link to all his stuff :)    _________     Music in this episode comes from  BAPHONYM  - from the LP STILLFACE which you can find here:   https://mondegreensoho.bandcamp.com/album/stillface   Please send your musical submissions to lidellmakeswaves@gmail.com I love to hear them! ____   Other links :   Mylar Melodies  deep dive into the Orchestron link here   The music of Hans Otte link here  ( this is not the album but rather a live performance)

The ambient-neoclassical duo of pianist DUSTIN O'HALLORAN and electronic musician ADAM WILTZIE — collectively A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN — have a name that not only sets them apart, but needs some explanation. As you might expect for two Americans who met in Italy while touring, their music has more to do with European art than their roots in California and Texas. It starts with the Greek goddess Nike, who became the Roman goddess of victory, conveniently named Victoria. She's familiar to students of art history as a triumphal winged figure on coins, jewelry, and architecture. Her most famous monument is The Winged Victory of Samothrace, now in the Louvre—a masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture and the very classical embodiment of the spirit of triumph. So it's a stroke of post-classical genius to address their work to "the sullen," and a shrewd way of managing the expectations of a possibly cynical post-modern audience: the regal pace and transcendent beauty of their music brings a feeling of quiet reassurance. They're members of a popular group of modern classical composers with an integral ambient sensibility. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, reassuring neo-classical ambient for trying times, on a program called SOLEMN HOPE. Music is by A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN, TERJE RYPDAL, BEN LUKAS BOYSEN, JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON, JEFF GREINKE, VOLKER BERTELMANN & DUSTIN O'HALLORAN, and SLOW MEADOW. The duo consisting of Wiltzie and composer Duston O'Halloran are releasing a new album on February 26th entitled Invisible Cities, which is actually a condensed version of the score they created for Leo Warner's theatre production. The album is everything you would expect from AWVFTS and more, with big cinematic moments delicately balanced by crushingly lonely ambiance; it is a recording that causes your mind to race and your emotions to drift. The mix Wiltzie has put together for AM 36 is a bit of a new direction and a pleasant surprise packed with dubby and indie vibes that bring out Wiltzie's tastes perfectly.
