In this episode, we are joined by Rev. Dr. Vicki Loflin Johnson and Rev. Ali Young, Director of Clergy Excellence in The Louisiana Conference, to talk about the upcoming clergy retreat called Grieving Well. Clergy are expected to share the burden of others' grief as well as the collective grief of the institutions we serve.  In the midst of caring for others, how can we make space for tending our own souls? In this one-day retreat we will consider ways that we as leaders might faithfully tend our own grief while teaching and encouraging our congregations to do the same. We will share ideas and resources to help create personal and congregational rituals for mourning. We will reflect together about the potential benefits and positive outcomes when we practice grieving well.   Our day apart will be led by Dr. Johnson who believes that tending our grief is an essential wellbeing practice for ministry leaders in every season, and especially in response to the last several years of leadership in the church.   Join Vicki for this intentional conversation about healing and wholeness. She served for 30 years in the Mississippi Conference in a variety of settings—small church pastor, clergy couple co-appointment, executive pastor, district superintendent, and nine years as senior pastor of a community-focused downtown church.  Coaching professionally since 2015, she holds a Level 2/PCC credential with the International Coaching Federation, is a Lead Trainer with Coach Approach Skills Training (CAST) and created a Level 2 Leadership Coach Specialization through Radiant Coaches Academy.  Vicki is also certified as an Intentional Interim Ministry Specialist, Spiritual Director, and 200-hour E-RYT yoga instructor.  In 2020, she founded The Art of WellBeing (www.coachingtheartofwellbeing.com) —offering individual and group coaching in support of clergy leadership and wellbeing.  Vicki and her husband Roger live in East Texas.

Filly is joined by Dr Ali Young on today's podcast episode. I'm a big fan of Dr Ali's work, and how she is championing working mums and mums running health businesses. Plus, I think she is just an awesome and sparkly human being in general! We have SOOOO many things in common, right down to our own body burnout stories, old dysfunctional patterns that led to burnout, how we went about healing our bodies, and why we now do what we do. I know you're going to love this convo! About Dr Ali Young Dr Ali is a Health & Business Strategist for Working Mums owning health practices. After 20 years in practice, authoring her book Work.Mama.Life, and recovering through her own burnout journey, she is determined to support working mums in the healthcare space to show up for themselves first...and then to create meaningful connections & profitable businesses. In today's episode, Dr Ali talks to Filly about: Dr Ali shares her own body burnout story - juggling a thriving practice, giving birth to two kids within less than two years, a couple of international moves to support her husband's career, and how her body eventually screamed out with fatigue, nerve pain, and unexplained rapid 10kg weight gain. We chat about how Dr Ali recovered from body burnout, including working with an integrative doctor and doing stool testing, parasite cleansing and DNA testing to support lifestyle choices and detoxing. We dive into the reason why Dr Ali developed body burnout in the first place. Yes it was a bucketload of doing “all the things”, and poor lifestyle choices (lots of coffee, wine and high intensity exercise), but deeper than that was the subconscious belief that she needed to be everything for everyone. Next up, we move into Dr Ali's book, Work. Mama. Life., which looks at how mothers can balance work, motherhood and life, by breaking patriarchal norms and expectations, nourishing the body with good food, movement, sleep, connection and calm, and how to align your beliefs and values to live a beautiful and guilt-free life, that doesn't drain your cup. Dr Ali also shares why she transitioned into business coaching for mums owning health businesses. We chat about how common burnout is in health practitioners, and the irony of it, and why there is a gap in the market to support working mums in healthcare (this is where Dr Ali steps in and shines her magic!). Finally Dr Ali gives us a glimpse into a day in the life of a mum in business, and how she prevents burnout, and easy first steps to take to climb out of the spiral of body burnout. In last weeks episode I spoke about wellbeing rhythms in the workplace and the need for us all to be building in moments of self-care.   I then read an article in the Harvard Business Review by author Greg McKeown, who's written two of my favourite books and are recommended reading at COMUNiTI; Essentialism & Effortless. In this article Greg says that for organisations to build top performing teams, they should only be asking for 85% effort. The premise that when we consistently perform at 100% we burn out.   Prior to this Dr Meg Hooper and I discussed the recent legislative changes around psychosocial hazards in the workplace.   I see a theme emerging… the conversation as to the health and wellbeing of our people is being elevated in our workplaces and is at the core of all business performance.   So, this week I've invited Dr Ali Young to join me, to better understand what is that we can be doing to support ourselves individually, and what we can be doing as teams and organisations to practically support the health and wellbeing of our people.   Dr Ali Young is a health strategist, who works with mums owning and operating health practices. After recovering from burnout in 2019 and writing a book about it, she has become passionate about supporting other health practitioners, particularly mums, to navigate the same stressors with a different outcome.   In this episode Ali shares with us not only the science that backs up why we should be taking better care of our health, but if we are not giving ourselves the permission to pause, no amount of sleep, trips to the gym or healthy eating is likely to change our perception of stress and impact our wellbeing.   We discuss how a simple conversation with your team can uncover opportunities to support everyone's wellbeing and the simple changes in schedule that have led to increased performance in her own practice.   She also shares with us her three tips to ensuring maximum wellbeing in our work week.   So, why not take a walk, tune in and use this 30mins as your permission to pause.   LINKS Get your copy of Mel's new Book “The Next Workplace; Designing Dynamic Environments that Inspire Human Potential”   Connect with Ali; LinkedIn | Instagram | Website   Connect with Mel; Email | Insta |

Dr Ali Young is a Chiropractor with over 17 years experience. She graduated from RMIT University in 2002, and whet her appetite of principled chiropractic work in Perth, Western Australia. She moved from an associate position after 3 years, to owning her own practice with her best mate and colleague, Dr Olivia Gleeson in Palmyra, Western Australia, where she practiced for 8 years. In this time she completed her Masters in Chiropractic Paediatrics through the McTimoney College of Chiropractic, and also sat on the WA branch of CAA (now the Australian Chiropractors Association), and WA Registration Board (until merging with AHPRA). She began to present on working with children as a chiropractor during this time, and has always had a passion to give back to the profession. Dr Ali moved to Malaysia with her husband and a newborn in 2012, and then spent extensive time travelling for her husbands work, basing themselves in Malaysia and South Korea, with a little stopover in QLD.  During this time, they had another child, and she also began to really FEEL the movement of mothering taking over. Having seen many mums over the years with their struggles, and then the reality of it when she reopened her benchmark practice in Gladstone QLD, Innate Chiropractic, she feels it is time to really work together to support our mums. Dr Ali still loves teaching Chiropractors about working with kids, as well as learning from the emerging leaders in her profession. But she also loves to open up lines of conversations about the true realities of motherhood, and how they can shape us, how we can shape them, and how the expectation dense society we are currently living in is somewhat taking over elements of our intuitive mothering journey. Dr Ali Young is a Chiropractor on a mission to help mums. Her aim is to help guide mums to choose themselves, choose a journey that works for their health, their brain, and their family's health, which will ultimately help them UnFcK their motherhood journey. She was having conversations with her practice members daily about the loss of what they expected with mothering, the loss of joy, the struggle, and the lack of sisterhood. She figures if she is having these conversations every day one on one, then there must be plenty of mums who need this support too. In this episode we talk about the Patriarchal Motherhood and the Perfect Mother Myth, and how we can take steps to redefine what it means to be a mother in a way that makes our heart sing, without making it look a certain way. This episode is all about your presenter, Dr Ali Young, and her motherhood journey. Moving from her career as a chiropractor to selling her practice to moving overseas to having her first child all in a 12 month period definitely shaped a different motherhood for her. There were struggles, there were strong realisations about motherhood, how it shaped her, and how she really relied on a tribe of women to support her in it too!  In this episode, you will hear all about mothering from someone in the thick of it, and why it has prompted her to launch UnFck Motherhood, to shake off the society shackles and carve your own path forward.

What are the effects of isolation on our mental health? Any new mother can tell you - the effects are heavy and far reaching. On the show today we have Dr. Ali Young, who was so shocked by the isolation caused by her transition into motherhood she has made it her business to help mothers find and build their tribe. In a world where “busy-ness is rewarded and rest is admonished” moms are getting hit the hardest. Dr. Ali started seeing this trend in her Chiropractic practice, and the sheer volume of tapped out moms alerted her to a major problem at large. You can’t have this conversation with every patient. You just can’t. So she’s created a container to do it in. It’s called Unfck Motherhood, and it’s a place to nurture and grow self-aware, connected, resilient women, who understand that taking care of themselves serves their families immensely. The massive shift to motherhood isn’t unlike the massive shift many of us have undergone with Covid. Dr. Ali’s soul-saving approach to restoring the hood to motherhood is something we can all benefit from. JOIN DR. ALI’S COURSE! If you are you over it, feeling like every day is the same, not fulfilling, and sometimes there are sides of you showing up that you just aren't sure where they came from - you're not alone. The Embracing Motherhood is designed for busy mums to reimagine their mothering experience, provide tools you can use to change it up, and to allow reconnection and joy to re-enter your world. If this sounds like something that could turn around your 2020, head over and check it out. www.draliyoung.com/embrace ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr Ali Young is a Chiropractor with a passion for helping Mums to become UnFkd and thriving. With nearly 18 years experience in practice, working with children and mothers for most of the time, she loves watching mums blossom into themselves as they grow and learn about themselves and their children. She graduated from RMIT University in Melbourne Australia in 2002. She moved to Perth WA early 2003 and began working as an associate for 3 years, before branching out with her best friend and mama mentor Dr Olivia Gleeson to work side by side for 8 years. In this period she served as on the WA Registration board and was the Vice President of the WA Chapter of the Chiropractors Association of Australia. She also completed her Masters in Chiropractic Pediatrics. She loved playing sport... which is where she met her husband. Not long after getting married, they moved to Malaysia where she had the majority of her first pregnancy. She birthed in Perth WA, with her support network, but they moved back overseas when their first child was only 2.5 weeks old. This is where her reality set in. They eventually moved back to Australia, in QLD, and she returned to work, and became pregnant again, this time birthing in a regional hospital with a great support network. They stayed in Australia for a while longer, and just after the youngest child turned 1 they moved to South Korea for two years. This was epic, and her tribe of wonder mums was really born here. As was the growth of understanding of motherhood for her. When they moved back to Australia Dr Ali reopened her private practice in Gladstone QLD, seeing over 50% children and another 20-30% pregnancy and post partum mums. in 2019 she has really felt a calling to share her knowledge about UnFckIng Motherhood with a bigger community. So Unfck Motherhood was born, to help mums embrace their motherhood journey again, and regain their HOOD. Boxing has always been a part of the Copeland Family. Stacey’s father was a professional boxer and her granddad has been involved in the family gym, which has been teaching boxing for over 40 years.  Stacey was brought up at gym and spend many happy hours down there from a young age learning how to box, and she would happily spar with the boys not knowing any different. It was only as she got older, she was made aware how unusual her passion for boxing was. She’d wanted to take boxing to the next level, but because boxing was illegal for women, she had to put her dream on hold and instead decided to follow her other passion, football, and after playing for her country at under eighteen, she then became a professional and headed off to play football for clubs around the world.  After twelve broken bones, it was time for Stacey to retire from football and at 29 she decided she was going to follow her dreams and see if she could make it at boxing!  Although many people said at 29 Stacey was too old to take up a new sport - especially boxing. Stacey knew, she would not be stopped, she was going to at least try. During this podcast, Stacey shares with us the hardships and challenges she faced and how she persevered and was able to prove all her doubters wrong and went on to win two ABA national titles, as well as four Boxcup tournaments in Europe.  I loved recorded this episode, there are so many learning points, and for me, it really does show no matter what happens, its never to late to go after your dreams and with hard work, commitment and focus you can make it happen and you can achieve amazing things. You just need to go for it. If you’ve enjoyed this episode send Stacey a tweet she’s @Staceyspongebob I’m also on twitter @_TOUGH_GIRL as always it would be great to hear from you.  Don’t forget to subscribe and to tell your friends about the Tough Girl Podcast.
