We had the pleasure of interviewing Amber Run over Zoom video!London's introspective indie rock trio Amber Run recently released their fourth studio album, 'How To Be Human'. The album title is a nod to the wish of a human guide book that could teach us how to be happy, how to be content, how to find peace within the world and, crucially, within ourselves. What this album emulates is exactly that.In celebration of the 13 track album, the band also released ‘The Hurt (Act III)' - the final part of a trilogy of EPs that doubles as an expansive collection of songs that helped create the upcoming album. The track ‘'Hurt'' has landed on Spotify's The Indie List, All New Rock, New Music Friday UK, Indie Brandneu, New Music Friday BE and New Music Friday NL in addition to Apple Music's New In Alternative and New In Rock playlists. ABOUT AMBER RUNAmber Run - consisting of frontman/guitarist Joe Keogh, bassist Tomas Sperring and keyboard player Henry Wyeth - have managed not just to continue but to thrive on their own terms through making music together. They released their debut album ‘5AM' in 2014 via RCA, where they built lasting relationships with a fanbase who had found relatability in their deeply moving songwriting. On their second & third LP ‘For A Moment, I Was Lost' and ‘Philophobia', the band continued building their fanbase organically, inviting open dialogues with songs that often cut to the quick of life's more difficult moments. Throughout all of this, their early 2014 single ‘I Found,' has taken on a life of its own; currently sitting at a gargantuan 300 million Spotify plays, it's been adopted by a new generation of fans on TikTok where more than half a million people have created videos inspired by the track. Offline, the band recently sold out their first Europe and North American tour dates, culminating in their biggest shows to date including London's Roundhouse before signing to TRIPEL for their, ‘How To Be Human' album. We want to hear from you! What could be as lonely as love? This week Annie and Shadin discuss a lesser known Amber Run song all about the sometimes isolating, terrifying side of love. (A callback to our discussions on Avoidant Attachment style, anyone??) Despite the subject matter, this one is an absolute VIBE. We also touch briefly on some new bops and announce a seasonal (indie) classic for next week. THE LONELIEST WHALE: THE SEARCH FOR 52 is a cinematic quest to find the “52 Hertz Whale,” which scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude calling out at a frequency that is different from any other whale. As the film embarks on this engrossing journey, audiences will explore what this whale's lonely plight can teach us — not just about our changing relationship to the oceans, but to each other. This is the only film that set out in search of 52. The 52 Hertz Whale was originally discovered in 1989. Over the last 3 decades 52 has become a global sensation capturing the hearts of fans around the world. This whale's story has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Business Insider and more. Most recently the British Indie Rock band Amber Run and the K-pop band BTS have written songs about the whale. Award winning filmmaker Joshua Zeman has been at the forefront of investigative documentaries for the past decade. His most recent work was the hit Netflix documentary series, THE SONS OF SAM: DESCENT INTO DARKNESS. His critically-acclaimed film CROPSEY, a look into the disappearance of five children, is considered to be one of most terrifying horror documentaries of all time. Director Joshua Zeman joins us for a conversation on the primordial fascination that whales exert over humans, the impact his first encounter with Blue Whale had on him, how “singing Humpbacks saved whales for being hunted into extinction and why 52's story has captured a world-wide audience. Anil Sebastian is a multifaceted artist, producer and vocalist producing some of the most unique and otherworldly music to emerge from the UK in recent years. As well as their solo identity, Anil Sebastian is also in Icelandic band Hrím, with singer Ösp and producer Cherif Hashizume. Sebastian is also the creative director of pioneering sonic branding agency DLMDD. Already a familiar face to many in the industry as co-founder and director of the legendary London Contemporary Voices Choir, Anil's work has seen them regularly working on arrangements for and appearing alongside the likes of Alt-J, Manu Delago, Imogen Heap, Elena Tonra (Daughter), Kelly Lee Owens, Eivor, Eska, Nitin Sawhney, Laura Mvula, Sam Smith and U2. The choir has performed at several Burberry fashion shows, The British Fashion Awards, the 2020 Tommy Hilfiger show, two BBC Proms and also features on the Harry Potter Play soundtrack. Anil's choral version of Amber Run's ‘I Found' (which LCV performed with the band for Mahogany) has had over 4 million streams. Having released their debut album “Mesonoxian”, co-produced by Ingmar Kamalagharan and Cherif Hashizume (Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, David Byrne) in late 2017, collecting support on the way from i-D, Stereogum, Clash and Line of Best Fit online as well as radio support across Radio 2, 3, 6Music, BBC London and the Asian Network, the album campaign culminated in a sold out show at London's legendary ICA. “A gorgeous listen from start to finish...brave at every turn” Album Review, Line of Best Fit Since then Anil has immersed themself once again in the creative process, contributing co-writes/features the debut album of legendary producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Imogen Heap, Robyn), Björk percussionist Manu Delago's Silver Kobalt album as well as taking on several bespoke commissions for sync, contributing choral arrangements to queer artist and activist Nakhane's debut album, and co-writing tracks for The Cinematic Orchestra side-project Hunrosa. In October 2020 Anil Sebastian's immersive short film Daffodil was released on NOWNESS. Daffodil has been created with support from Momentum Funding by PRS Foundation, Arts Council and National Lottery Directed by Thiing Studios and written by Anil Sebastian, Daffodil explores the future of artificial intelligence and looks at what it means to be human and how we define identity. Combining animation by Thomas Rawle with slick live action footage and archival footage from Sebastian's childhood, Daffodil is a surreal examination of the moral implications of artificial intelligence through Sebastian's imagination. Set in the near future, Daffodil tells the story of a scientist (played by Anil Sebastian themself) gone rogue and we see them attempting to bring back the conscious mind of a child in the form of an AI. In a parallel, otherworldly meta-verse this playful creature is being created through animation. Paired effortlessly with the film and archival footage, Sebastian's exquisite avant-garde art pop soundtrack provides the perfect backdrop for this mesmerising cinematic experience. The film was shown at Normal? Festival of the Brain as well as at a private screening underground at The Brunel Shaft in London. For Sebastian's cinematic debut, they have collaborated with an impressive list of some of the most forward thinking musicians, artists and thinkers in the UK. Sebastian holds a degree in Physics and Philosophy and they are one of the most unique voices and producers in the UK scene having worked with some of the most iconic global stars such as Imogen Heap, U2 and Bjork producer Guy Sigsworth. Daffodil also sees a contribution by Anil's brother Ingmar Kamalagharan as the co-producer of the film and live drummer on the soundtrack. Kamalagharan has a degree in Astronomy from UCL and works at the UK Space Agency and he is a long-time collaborator of the producer and innovator Cherif Hashizume (David Byrne, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno) in machine learning, interactive music installations and innovative software. Daffodil is a Descartesian meditation on existence and consciousness. As technology continues to infiltrate our public and private life, how can we reach an authentic form of being? Can an artificial intelligence gain consciousness and can it truly exist? Would you bring back someone you lost and if so, would they really be them? By combining science fiction elements with intimate, personal storytelling through encapsulating visuals and soundtrack, Daffodil is a film not to miss. http://www.anilsebastian.com https://www.instagram.com/anil.sebastian

My guest today is Mr Joshua Keogh from the one and only AMBER RUN! Honestly... we wrote with him the day after we recorded this episode and I could NOT get over his voice when he started singing in the room. It blew my tiny little mind. He didn't go out of tune once. And fuck me, what an incredible writer and lyricist. It's likely you'll have heard Amber Run's music - their two songs 'I Found' and '5am' are two of my all-time favourites. And those two songs ALONE have over 122 MILLION plays on Spotify! Ridiculous but so so deserved.Today we dive into anxiety & depression, suicide attempts, religion, relationships, family, grief and a whole lot more.Follow Joshua: @joshuafabiokeoghFollow Amber Run: @amberrunFollow Kate: @katemcgillFollow the Podcast: @wedivedeeperSupport the Podcast: http://www.patreon.com/katemcgillSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/katemcgill)
Welcome to All Souls Witchy Women Podcast Episode 10: The Use of Music in A Discovery of Witches, Season 1. Music plays a critical role in setting the scene for a TV show or movie and nowhere is that more obvious than in A Discovery of Witches. Gifted composer Rob Lane wrote the score and you’ll hear his music woven through nearly every scene. We could devote an entire podcast just to that. For this episode though, we’re talking about the creative use of other music in the season, the music that is not official soundtrack music but rather songs chosen to help make a particular emotional point. We’ll listen to snippets of these amazing songs and artists and then break down why we think this particular song and this particular artist was the exact right choice to build the emotional tension and move along the storyline. Let’s get listening! Housekeeping details: We’ve read the whole All Souls Trilogy and will try to stay on topic if we say a particular show is going to only cover A Discovery of Witches, but we may forget or digress or whatever so consider yourself warned if you’ve only read one of the books. For the record, this particular podcast is entirely focused on the TV version produced by Bad Wolf TV in Wales. So, if you haven’t watched all eight episodes yet, you might want to hold off on listening to this until you do. Also this podcast is labeled explicit because we sometimes swear and we’re going to talk about sex because, well, there’s sex in the books. So that’s why we gave it the explicit rating. You’ve now been officially warned. Show notes: Each episode we bring you a note about wine because red wine is a main form of sustenance for vampires when they’re not drinking, you know, blood. Oh, and we like wine…a lot. Usually our weekly wine notes come to us compliments of our resident sommelier, Bayard, who knows what he’s talking about because he’s a founding partner at Crafted Brands. This week, Bayard discusses syrah. That’s all we’re going to say about that other than to say Bayard sings in this wine note and channels his inner Doris Day. The text version of the wine note can be found in our latest wine note. We note in the episode that music plays a big role in Deb Harkness' creative process. She listens to particular music and musicians while writing for both inspiration and to help her maintain a particular tone. These playlists are specific to the books and feature a ton of interesting, varied music. As promised here's a link to the playlists so you can listen yourself. To help you enjoy the artists and songs we reference from the show, here’s the playlist with links where we can: Song of Home--Ashmole 782, sung by Klara Ketelaars; White Rabbit, sung by Haley Reinhart; Demons, by Imagine Dragons; Go Your Own Way, sung by Lissie; Por Una Cabeza, by Carlos Gardel; Tuxedo Junction, by Glenn Miller; For You, by Rae Morris; I Found by Amber Run; Slow Motion Dance, by Rob Lane and the Chamber Orchestra of London.
