Received a couple of emails lately requesting information on two former elite racehorses. My correspondents are two younger racing enthusiasts curious about the deeds of Battle Heights and Manikato- the former a dour New Zealand stayer, the latter a dynamic Australian sprinter of the late 70's and early 80's. By coincidence both horses were ridden many times in races by Gary Willetts, an expatriate Kiwi jockey who settled in Australia in late 1975 destined for undreamed of success. Who better to reflect on the talents of both horses? My emailers are probably unaware of a 2021 podcast we posted with Gary Willetts right at the height of the covid lockdowns. In this interview the former champion jockey comprehensively reviews the careers of Battle Heights, Manikato and several other wonderful horses he got to ride. Let's give it another run this week. Gary admits he didn't want to come to Australia to ride Battle Heights in 1974. He says the NZ jockey's premiership was his primary focus. The former ace jockey talks of his move into the hotel business after a career ending race fall. He looks back on the injury toll from that fateful fall at Yarra Glen. Gary takes us back to childhood days in Auckland when he frequently attended race meetings with his parents. He reflects on work experience in the stables of leading trainer Fred Smith who later indentured him. Gary looks back on his first winner Silver Lad who started at massive odds. He remembers his chance meeting at the races with the young lady from Matamata destined to become his wife. The Willetts are closing in on 60 years of marriage. The former ace jockey has never forgotten the horse who changed his life. He takes us through the remarkable career of iron gelding Battle Heights. Gary was stable jockey for Bon Hoysted when a precocious, chestnut son of Manihi arrived in the stables. He remembers Manikato's quirky early habits and takes us through the highlights of the powerhouse sprinter's amazing career. He reflects on the training genius of Bob Hoysted who took over the training of Manikato following the sudden death of his brother Bon. Willetts pays tribute to several other topliners he got to ride beginning with Rose Of Kingston who in 1982 became the first filly in 38 years to win the AJC Derby. This was my first interview with Gary Willetts in many years. It was a delight to catch up with a true gentleman of the turf, and the rider of some of the best horses of his era.

The origin story of many outdoor clothing and gear companies is somewhat…part myth. There's an emphasis on deriving and marketing that myth, and then, sometimes, comes the well designed and well made gear. Some companies nail the myth and not the products.Les Houches and Salt Lake City based Blue Ice nails the products and happens to have a compelling backstory. Begun in 2008 by Giovanni Rossi in Chamonix, the company set forward on a path of intentional slow growth. By 2011 they released their Choucas harness which arrived at less than 150g, and since has become an alpine climbing/ski-mountainering staple for many. The company has branched into ski specific packs with their Kume series; they have hard goods in ice screws and axes.In this episode of The High Route Gear Shed Podcast, Gavin sits down with Riley Willetts, a Salt Lake-based skier who helps run Blue Ice's North American marketing, sales, and events. As we'll learn from Willetts, Blue Ice's Salt Lake HQ vibe is an all-hands-on-deck scene where it's not uncommon to wear multiple hats after a dawn run, bike, or ski. Blue Ice has evolved from a scrappy upstart to a place where designers and manufacturers craft high-end climbing and ski-specific gear. Still, there remains something core about the brand: you sense you are supporting a low-key company whose values remain very connected to moving through the mountains rather than the boardroom. Willetts sheds some light on the Blue Ice ethos and explains who is behind the brand's design concepts and how the company plans to expand in the coming years. You can find us at the-high-route.com: Yeah, there are two hyphens for redundancy, which is a good policy in the mountains. And according to Barry, don't-fear-the-hyphens®. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). One thing is for sure, Memoriam don‘t need us to rekindle their storied history in this band or their members long and legendary careers. Basically, if you don't know them by now you are on purpose avoiding it…they are just that much a part of death metal. For their fifth album, Rise To Power (Reaper Entertainment), it's all about diversity and varying up the songs just a bit. And no, that doesn't mean they've done a 180. It simply means, they're building on what they've created over the course of the past four albums. Is it heavy? Yes. Still trademark Memoriam? Yes. Better than their previous outings? Our opinion only, but YES. Their sound is as vital to death metal as air and water is for humans to keep living and it only gets better with time. Buke recently sat down with the genre defining vocalist Karl Willetts to discuss the new album, how it came to be, Memoriam's and its members histories, and a ton more. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy. 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram.

My last name is sagen soft.Candice ClaireOkay, that's even harder them it's even harder than yours.Mischa ZvegintzovSo Oscar and Horn, ox and boxing horn. We're kindred spirits with our last names. But Kansas Claire anyway. And we are at the 2020 spring, Mind Body Soul magazine released party. And what's this valley called?Candice ClaireThe Roaring Fork Valley,Mischa Zvegintzovthe Roaring Fork Valley which I love and the Roaring Fork River is like, right that way and Aspen is what that way. It's like super mountains that way. That way we got Carbondale Carbondale that way right over there. And what's another little tab and no? Salt Springs? Yes. And then we are at the I keep forgetting the name of Willis.Candice ClaireOh, then name of the place? Yeah, it's a brewery and I don't know because I don't come here. Often sorry,Mischa Zvegintzovin the Willetts subdivision. No, it's okay. I appreciate it. And so you are in the magazine, you have an article in the magazine. And it's page 28 and 29. So anybody go get this Mind Body Soul magazine, go to page 2829. And you can find Candice Claire, and we've got 10 weeks to a better version of you. Yeah. Who doesn't want that? So how? Tell me your so you said you have three pillars are ru VEDA. Good job. Meditation was the third one and there was a second aromatherapy, aromatherapy. So how does one get get to be I don't know if the experts the right word or super knowledgeable, like what's your path to? Yeah,Candice Clairelet me just frame this.Mischa ZvegintzovOkay. Please do? Yes. Yes. So our Veda isCandice Clairethe oldest healing system on the planet. Dating 5000 years, but the oral tradition even longer. And so it's it's literally a wisdom or a science of life that the sages and Rishis and, you know, they, they studied the science of life, from the greater Cosmos down to the individual. Yeah. Okay. So the science applies to anyone it doesn't it's not even though it was kind of born in India. It's not it's not based on any religion, any it's notMischa Zvegintzovlike India specific or, like,Candice Claireit doesn't matter, specifically in Copenhagen, or, you know, Dallas, Texas or, you know, Pakistan like Yeah,Mischa Zvegintzovwe allCandice Claireare basically embodying the wisdom of our VEDA. So the 10 habits to make it easy not everybody wants to learn deeply the philosophy although I find that when people start practicing Yeah, they asked me for more so I'm going to be teaching like a whole art of it, of course, but But what I loved in my own journey, yeah. And studies is that I originally studied at the Chopra center, and started with meditations. Yes. And Encinitas, actually Carlsbad. Carlsbad. Yes. And, and I, you know, it's like you, you seek out what you need to learn. And I was very anxious at the time I wasn't sleeping well. And I wanted to meditate. But like most people, I thought I couldn't because I couldn't get the Zen Mind. And that that course really shifted for me. Like I realized, like, oh, it's not about like having a Zen Mind. It's about just being with the mind you app. And, and it sort of gave me a tool. I would just, if I was up at two in the morning, I'd sit up and do my meditation and often fall back to sleep. So that kind of hooked me and I was introduced to our Vedic lifestyle at the Chopra center. So I I went back and I got certified to teach the meditation right after that I got certified to teach the ARIA Vedic because I was once you get hooked, it's like yourMischa ZvegintzovRenu it. Yeah. And you're feeling the effects are the positive effects.Candice ClaireI would say that there's a there's a difference in intellectual knowledge and knowingness. Yeah. And I knew, in that I wanted to heal with natural modalities. You know, I didn't, I was not the kind of person that just wanted a pill to, because that kind of takes you into a rabbit hole, I think. And you're not getting to know yourself, and you're suppressing what's there. Yeah. So that's why this wisdom of life really appealed to me. Yeah. And so it's so many different layers. It's like, very simple that a child can understand the basic principles. But then you can study it the rest of your life, and there's still more. So there's this understanding that as humans, we're the microcosm of the macrocosm. So like right now, you know, we're changing seasons. Yeah. And that's always like a little bit of an unstable time. So I generally offer a cleanse in the spring and a cleanse in the fall because our your beta says, during those unstable transitions, you need to do a cleanse, and let go of the previous season. So you don't go into the next season. Carrying undigested like toxicity. Yeah. And you get sick more, or you get allergies, or Yeah. Yeah, it's like it just, it makes sense for anyone. And another thing that I love. So in the the 10 week course, that I teach is really taking the 10 most important hygiene habits really of Arvada to teach, you know, one a week. And the reason you're that way, it's more like an introduction, but it's more like how can this benefit me right now? Yeah. And it's like, when you can start realizing that no matter we can do anything we want, like, I can stay here and till two in the morning. Yes, I did drink a bunch of alcohol. But that is not being integrity a with my physical body, which is temporary that I get to cruise around in this world. Right? Like, my soul is here. But how am I gonna treat this? The buying? That gets to like, take it places?Mischa ZvegintzovYeah. Love it. Yeah, but a great what a great visualization. Yeah.Candice ClaireAnd that's really what woke me up is because, you know, I had, like most people, none of us get out without having something to learn. So I have a lot of emotional trauma. I had kind of a physical breakdown, and it was all the seeds had already been planted. So this really got me through. Like, I healed myself naturally. And so the 10 habits are just a great way for people who don't need to know anything about audio. Yeah, because it's like, okay, if you understand that, no matter what you do, like inside your head, there is something that is better than any sweats watch, ever. And so it's keeping time with like the sunrise and the sunset, and the seasonal changes. And so as I was saying, Before, you can do anything, but when you really understand that you're going against your body's rhythm that isn't trained with nature, like, you know, we're diurnal, we're supposed to be sleeping at night, and awake during the day. Yes. And so are your beta has practices that actually help us entrain not only with the timing of the day, but just practices that will allow your body to, to heal to strengthen Yeah, to become more vibrant to and then when you find out, you start doing these things, yeah, you end up liking it, you know, you end up like, wow, like, I actually am sleeping better most of the time. And you know, I actually liked the way I feel when I'm not eating a bunch of like toxic food. Or if I'm eating really late at night when my body should be sleeping and doing a deeper digestion. Yeah, you know, so it's all our Vedic considers these, I do call them hygiene habits because it's, it's literally how do we live in our bodies? You know, you'd think we'd know. ButMischa Zvegintzovwe're stubborn, this Western?Candice ClaireWell, it's just not it's not taught. It's not supported culturally. I would say that's probably the biggest obstacle with my clients and you know, people in the courses because they get all jazzed to like, do this. So like literally we're supposed to eat you Be done eating before the sun sets? Yes. And they're like, Well, my husband and my kids or my significant other, they don't want to eat too late, and they want to watch a movie late at night. And here I am, like, I'm a big bore, but it's really not boring. You know, because when you start feeling better, it's empowering. It's empowering. And you know, so we have these different layers. We often want to start with our physical Yeah, right. Yeah. But there's your five layers. Before weMischa Zvegintzovgo into the five layers. Again, we're talking about what we're referencing a bunch, your 10 week course where they can get a glimpse of it. And the Mind Body Soul magazine, right? Yeah, it's awesome. And this is the spring issue. We're at the release party. But if they are captivated so far, and they're like, I need to know where to find you. Like, where are they gonna find you? Where are someone gonna find you?Candice ClaireOkay, couple of places. You can email me at Candace at swan. sage.com. Swan sage is my business name. And that is ca n di C. E. At Swan, Sage Swan as a ge.com. My website is swan. sage.com. And or text me? Yeah. 970-948-7525.Mischa ZvegintzovDo you do you have a favorite client profile? Or is there like, Who do you find yourself working with most? Or who do you prefer to work with?Candice ClaireI mean, it tends to be more women than men, but not totally, but definitely more women? I would say generally, when I mean, I have clients ranging from like age 14 to almost 80. Yeah, but I'd say mostly, it's like when women start waking up to like, I'm not feeling so great. You know, it's like when things start feeling like they're going downhill. So like, you know, late 30s 40s. Yeah. Cool. Yeah.Mischa ZvegintzovI love that. And then the 10 weeks, to a better version of you, which is in the magazine, and you talk about what we're talking about now. And so it's basically the 10 ru Vedic. I'm butchering that name, guys habits, but it's almost it's like soft entry into that, or you don't have to have any interest in it. But it's like you're taking this millennia old wisdom, body knowledge. And you're saying, Hey, here's 10 weeks to Well, I mean, a better version of you.Candice ClaireLike, are you sleeping? Okay. Yeah. You know, what's your weight? Like? You wake up feeling with like, you have brain fog. I mean, the common things that people are suffering with should not be normalized. That's all I'll say about that. And normalizing that. We're supposed to feel good.Mischa ZvegintzovI'd love that. Yeah. And I love no pills, like,Candice Claireyeah. And let's embrace that. We are supposed to live blissfully in our bodies. SoMischa Zvegintzovgood. Okay. So we were going to touch on the five layers, and then I'm gonna connect you back to the crowd.Candice ClaireHe's gonna toss me back out. Yes, but I won't leave you hanging with the five layers. Okay, so you have a physical layer. Most of us identify with Yes. Okay. You have an energy around you. That's called the prana that your lifeforce energy which extends beyond the body, okay. And that can be healthy or unhealthy to you have a mind which houses all of your mental activity and your emotions. Yeah, that's usually the most constricted part of us. And that's, that's really like, there's tools like you work with meditation and you don't have to be an expert. To work with that energy. Yeah. And then you have what's called a knowingness. It's actually the thing Jana is these are called Kosha is a big Jana Maya Kosha, which is like your third eye that you've heard about yoga classes. Yes. What it's really talking about is doesn't have to have logic. Everyone could be saying goes that way. But your knowingness says go that way. And that's the right way to go. So then it's like opening up and clearing so that you have a good connection with that layer. And then when you get all those other layers, like, you know, when you're doing these habits, and you really get called the other layers in a better way, then you access the fifth which is the bliss body, it's the Anandamaya Kosha.Mischa ZvegintzovLove this amazing. Do you have a favorite, like client story that comes to mind where you're like before and after, or they just? Yeah, totally,Candice Clairelike Just as our beta and I talked about that in the 10 habits, we do seasonal cleanses. So one of my favorite stories recently is usually I get girls on the cleanse, but I had this man who very reluctantly joined last fall. He's like, I've never done a cleanse before. I don't want you to tell me to do like, some of the things you're saying, like, you know, I chill. I never make everyone do the same thing. We're all individual. But we're going to be in this bubble together. So he was like, Okay, after the cleanse, he stopped drinking, he stopped smoking weed. He cleaned up his apartment, he started eating well. He was a changed man. And that that was a pretty dramatic shift and one cleanse. So much so that his good friend, this woman was like, What did you do? And he told her, and then she was reluctant. So he was trying to get her to do my first free. I just ended my spring cleanse. She was like, dragging her feet, even though she needed to do it. She finally called me the day before. And she was like, I don't really feel like doing a cleanse. I'm like, Well, what's like, what's your pain point? She was like, Well, I gained like, 30 pounds over the past couple of years. Yeah, I'm like, Well, why not? And she joined. And she like, killed it. And so I was like, I love those stories. And the whole reason is because they did it.Mischa ZvegintzovI love it. So good. They took the leap, took the risk.Candice ClaireYeah, I took the risk, and I don't ever make because we're all we have similarities, but we're all a little different. So it's like, I'm not going to tell one person to do the same plans as everyone else. Yeah. Hi. So I really kind of guide people to likeMischa Zvegintzovwhat's doable? I love it. A little customization. Yeah, aspect to it right? Because you mightCandice Clairehave more fire and then the water. air and ether or the five elements. Fire Water, air space. LoveMischa Zvegintzovit. Oh my gosh, I could literally talk about this for hours. Super fun. Again, you can find Oh my gosh. Candice Claire. In the Mind, Body Soul spring 2020 que su and then tell everybody your website again.Candice ClaireSwan. sage.com. That's w a n sh e.com.Mischa ZvegintzovBam, and they can track you down there. Or they can hit rewind and get your email. There's so so much fun. Thank you. Good. Oh, well, no, keep going. Yeah, I actually did and I'm gonna hold you hostage for one more second. Okay. I want to make sure that they and I love asking this question. Is there anything you want to tell the viewers that you'd be you'd feel remiss if you didn't if you didn't tell themCandice Clairethat you are more than just your mind and your body and stop outsourcing your health. Was hoping this was not just another Celebrity gimmick whiskey. Aged to the Supergroup Metallica's special playlist consisting of their songs chosen by the band to "Help" age the juice to perfection, I think possibly the new Master Blender and the Willetts influence might have something to offer as well. Have a listen to see the final results, ratings, honest opinions and overall experience with this rye! As always we enjoyed the time recording and talking whiskey, have a listen and let us know what your thoughts!

What a guest and discussion I have in store for you this week! I'm joined by Elizabeth Willetts who started her career in recruitment but left the agency world as she didn't feel it was conducive to starting a family. Instead she wanted a job that would offer flexibility and could fit in around life and the demands of having young children. Unfortunately things didn't go to plan and Liz and her husband struggled to conceive. Ironically her new career ended up becoming more of a burden than a help with people constantly questioning when she would be having kids, unbeknownst to them how much they were compounding the pressure she felt to fall pregnant.Liz returned to the fast-paced world of recruitment and ended up in an internal role. Thankfully they welcomed their two children into the world during this period and she was also able to transition to part-time working. However, during COVID her position was made redundant and Liz faced constant frustration and discrimination when trying to find another role that would offer part-time hours or flexibility.Feeling like she had nowhere to turn, Liz took matters into her own hands and launched a job board (www.investinginwomen.co.uk) which focuses exclusively on vacancies offering flexible and part-time working. She also runs a Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/386475498981570) and regularly hosts LinkedIn Live sessions covering a range of topics with expert guest speakers.Liz is absolutely leading the charge when it comes to the views on mums, female worker rights, flexible working, and the benefits that organisations can gain when being more open minded in attitudes to working arrangements.I loved having her as a guest and am 100% on-board with everything she is doing. I hope you enjoy listening to our discussion.Support the show
Paul Willetts discusses with Ivan six things which he thinks should be better known. Paul Willetts is the author of five much-praised nonfiction books: Fear and Loathing in Fitzrovia; North Soho 999; Members Only; Rendezvous at the Russian Tea Rooms; and King Con. The third of these was turned into a big-budget British movie. Entitled The Look of Love (2013), it starred Steve Coogan, who described Members Only as “a thoroughly entertaining story, told by a writer with a vivid and amusing turn of phrase.” Paul has also written occasional journalism for The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Spectator, The Times Literary Supplement, BBC History Magazine, History Today, and contributed to The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Intro Topics : oli London Katie Hopkins Check out : Luxeria - YouTube - her video on Oli London: We need to talk about Oli London. @Luxeria - YouTube On 18 April 1943, four local boys (Robert Hart, Thomas Willetts, Bob Farmer and Fred Payne) were poaching or bird-nesting in Hagley Wood, part of the Hagley estate belonging to Lord Cobham near Wychbury Hill when they came across a large wych elm. Thinking the location to be a particularly good place to hunt birds' nests, Farmer attempted to climb the tree to investigate. As he climbed, he glanced down into the hollow trunk and discovered a skull. At first he believed it to be that of an animal, but after seeing human hair and teeth, he realised that he had found a human skull. As they were on the land illegally, Farmer put the skull back and all four boys returned home without mentioning their discovery to anybody. However, on returning home, the youngest of the boys, Willetts, felt uneasy about what he had witnessed and decided to report the find to his parents. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thes3podcast/message

At the turn of the 20th century, white Americans and Europeans saw the Native American Indian as both a mysterious and exotic figure. Their perceptions were almost entirely informed by horribly inaccurate pop culture, and Edgar Laplante found it all too easy to exploit their ignorance. The "King of Con Men" came from a working class family in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and seemed to have a pathological need to lie and consume an endless tide of praise and attention. His unbelievable adventures would take him from swindling country churches by impersonating a celebrated athlete to an international celebrity doling out handfuls of cash to fawning crowds across Europe. This week's guest on Can't Make This Up is author Paul Willetts. Paul is the author of several books, most of which center on larger-than-life personalities in the true crime genre. In his most recent book, King Con: The Bizarre Adventures of the Jazz Age's Greatest Impostor, Willetts describes the incredible exploits of Edgar Laplante in wonderful detail using a fun, novelistic style. Paul joined me from the U.K. to share some of Edgar's most successful (and outlandish) cons and dive into the psychology that drove him.
