Hannah's been getting updates from onboard the Arctic Sunrise, one of Greenpeace's research ships, since the beginning of the series - from Panama where it set sail out into the Galápagos Islands marine reserve. We heard as it crossed the equator, and we've learnt about the pioneering research the scientists and volunteers have already done on seamounts in the area. And now, they've finally anchored and we're joining them onboard for an episode all about Galápagos. You'll meet Sophie Cooke, the expedition lead; Captain Mike, the man behind the wheel; Andrea Vera, an Ecuadorian scientist; and Hannah is lucky enough to be able to catch up with Spanish Actress Alba Flores (from Netflix's Money Heist), who's just got back home after spending a week onboard.   Follow the show @oceanspod on IG, TikTok & Twitter for footage from onboard the Arctic Sunrise, and to see videos of what Alba got up to during her time there.   If you want to know more about the oceans and how to protect them, come and join us here: https://act.gp/life-under-water.

The world's longest mountain range is actually in the middle of the ocean - the mid-Atlantic ridge, at more than 40,000 miles long. But who knows about these mountains? How high are they? Where are they? What lives on them? Hannah is joined by South African actress and TV presenter Amanda Du Pont, who spent two weeks on a Greenpeace ship on a research expedition to Mount Vema in 2019. And she welcomes marine scientist Lucy Woodall back into the studio, who's led expeditions to seamounts all around the world. On 14 September 2013, the Arctic Sunrise - a ship belonging to the environmental group Greenpeace - embarked on an Arctic expedition. Its aim was to disrupt the first day of drilling on a newly built oil rig. This would be the first to drill for Arctic oil - something that had only been made possible in recent years by melting ice in the region. Frank Hewetson, a Greenpeace campaigner, was on board. He tells the story of the protest and arrest of 30 people by the Russian authorities. A Falling Tree production for BBC World Service. (Photo: Sign asking for Frank Hewetson's release. For nearly 50 years, Greenpeace has been sailing the world's oceans, protecting our planet and fighting for environmental justice. Through the Greenpeace Fleet - Rainbow Warrior, Arctic Sunrise and Witness - and tireless Greenpeace activists, they have been successful in obstructing nuclear tests in the Pacific, documenting plastics in our oceans, conducting research into the effects of climate change in the Arctic, and stopping shiploads of illegal timber leaving the Amazon. The fleet of ships has even brought humanitarian relief to communities devastated by extreme weather, and are fundamental to Greenpeace campaigns. Come mid-March, the Rainbow Warrior will be docking here in Malaysia, and we speak about the ship's history and the milestones reached through the campaigns carried out on it, with Greenpeace's Malaysia's Yvonne Nathan (Digital & Media Campaigner) and Thing Siew Shuen (Senior Program Manager).Image credit: Shutterstock See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mark Taylor-Canfield from Democracy Watch News spent a week aboard the Arctic Sunrise as a journalist while the Greenpeace ship toured the west coast of the USA on a mission to raise awareness about the environmental risks associated with Alberta tar sand oil shipments from the Trans Mountain Pipeline. Greenpeace research predicts increased oil tanker traffic on the Salish Sea, Puget Sound and along the Pacific coast as a result of proposed expansions to the pipeline which the Canadian government purchased from the Kinder Morgan corporation. https://www.greenpeace.org/usa/about/shiptour/about-the-arctic-sunrise/ Organized resistance to the pipeline has been led by First Nations in British Columbia and Washington State. The pipeline crosses reservations and tribal land. On Puget Sound these sovereign nations have joined with their allies among environmental activist groups to sound the alarm about the negative effects on the native Orca whale population which is already endangered. For this "Democracycast" podcast, Democracy Watch News Coordinating Editor Dean Edwards interviews Tulalip tribal member Kayah George, and Greenpeace spokesperson Yanni Veronis live from the ship Arctic Sunrise on the Salish Sea. Today's remarks are by the economist Richard Wolff, who breaks down some seldom heard history and discusses successes and failures of the former Soviet Union. And during this week, when the world is meeting at the UN Climate Summit in Bonn, Germany, we will maintain our focus on Puerto Rico, with voices from aboard the Arctic Sunrise, the Greenpeace ship scheduled to dock in Puerto Rico and assist in rebuilding sustainable communities.
