Bangkok is a mega city of more than 10 million people, the economic powerhouse of Southeast Asia and one of the world's most visited cities. Billions of dollars worth of new luxury real estate is planned as huge skyscrapers pierce the sky and become back drops to some of our biggest film and TV series. But there's a problem, Bangkok is sinking; in fact, it's one of the fastest sinking cities in the world. To make matters worse, climate change is affecting both sides of the city: sea levels are rising in the Bay of Bangkok, and water levels are increasing in the mighty Chao Praya river.Jordan Dunbar is in the Thai capital to find out: How do you stop a mega city sinking? Did you know there were mega cities in history that were way ahead of their time? Take Mohenjo-Daro in ancient India—it had an advanced drainage system and grid-like streets 4,500 years ago! Or the Mayan city of Tikal, with its towering pyramids and complex water management systems hidden deep in the jungle. Neoborn Caveman tears into the glossy facade of urban development, revealing the gritty underbelly where AI and tech could be the architects of our new world order."Every breath you take in these cities might just be logged," Neoborn warns, spotlighting the potential for smart cities to morph into surveillance hubs. This episode doesn't shy away from what legacy media might be too scared to admit: that the push for digital cities could be paving the way for a future where freedom is app-controlled.Neoborn paints a stark picture of a world where your digital footprint defines your existence, turning urban planning into a blueprint for control. It's not just entertainment; it's a satirical alarm bell, sounding off on the path we're barrelling down, unchecked by mainstream narratives."These so-called 'smart cities' aren't smart for us; they're smart for those watching us. Every sensor, every camera, every piece of tech isn't just there to make life easier - it's there to make us predictable, manageable, and controlled. We're building our own digital cages, folks, where our freedom isn't measured in open spaces but in data packets." Free speech marinated in comedy. Sweat, Drown, Parch: Why India's megacities can't handle extreme weather? | ft. Jaya Dhindaw

Every year, between May to September, the same images make the rounds. The national capital first sweats and then drowns with even a few millimetres of rain. The city that never sleeps braces water logging every year without fail. The silicon valley of India while facing traffic snarls the whole year dreads the monsoon months which make it worse.  Why is it that India's megacities crumble under the slightest variation in weather? Why are our national, financial capitals and metro cities not built to adapt to extreme weather conditions? Is it myopic city planning or unprecedented events?  As climate change related impacts intensify, cities have to prepare a long term plan to adapt to changing climatic conditions.  To discuss the same, we talked with Jaya Dhindaw, Executive Program Director, Sustainable Cities and Director, WRI India Ross Center. Jaya is an urban development professional and researcher with over two decades of global experience in sustainable development, urban resilience and natural resource management.  Jaya has in the past worked for the Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transport and Urban Planning (CISTUP) at the Indian Institute of Science. She has also worked with the City of Charlotte for over 8 years, first with the transit system and then with the planning department.  Full transcript of the episode is available in English  Presented by 101Reporters Follow TIEH podcast on Twitter, Linkedin & YouTube Our hosts, Shreya Jai on Twitter, Linkedin & Dr. Sandeep Pai on Twitter, Linkedin Jaya Dhindaw is on Linkedin

We'll be back in September with new episodes; in the meantime, enjoy this throwback and poke around the archive at Resources.org for more topics you might be interested in. In this week's episode rerun, host Daniel Raimi talks with Kelly T. Sanders, an associate professor at the University of Southern California. With her coauthors, Sanders published a series of studies on air-conditioning use in southern California, with a focus on who does (and does not) have access to cooling on hot days. This work, which touches on issues of energy and environmental justice, has big implications for managing climate change in the decades to come. Jason, Rob, and Asher offer visions of better infrastructure, policies, and culture that you can embrace, even if your home is in the city.Warning: This podcast occasionally uses spicy language.Sources/Links/Notes:Support the show

There has been a lot of excitement on the internet about sightings of lasers being used in Texas and recently, there was a report about alleged laser battlefield mapping over Cape Coral, Florida. We have also seen over the past several years how directed energy weapons and lasers are playing a role in geoengineering weather systems and perhaps contributing to the suspicious wildfires happening all over the world. Furthermore, the U.S. Army has devised a plan to use DEWs in megacities to offset or mitigate major civil unrest. This travesty needs to be exposed now before we are permanently censored. Tim Cocks joins me to speak about ancestral spirits, the importance of community networks, and the desperate need to hustle without getting hustled yourself.

The Digital Human

Our tech future will supposedly be defined by megaprojects. The most attention grabbing ideas include physical Megacities like ‘The Line' in Saudi Arabia, or Telosa in the United States, and on the digital side of things, we have the Metaverse. These are both supposed to be the new places we will work, play, love and create - sweeping aside past cities and online communities to become a utopian place for everyone to gather, and live a better way. But even as the foundations are laid… we seem to have moved on. The Metaverse has been roundly mocked and dismissed, with people deriding VR zoom meetings and legless avatars. While the very feasibility, and morality, of megacity projects has been questioned from their inception - comparisons to all manner of sci-fi dystopias abound. Aleks explores if promised tech utopias will inevitably become crumbling follies, why we get swept up in the narrative of a single tech genius who carves out the future for us all, and if the cycle of hype we have all been swept up in is disrupting our ability to indulge in slower iterations, which could actually lead us to a brighter tech future for us all.

Are megacities good places to live as a digital nomad? It's a really tough question, and the true answer is: "It depends on the city." So, in order to put together a halfway intelligent method, we created a set of 6 criteria points to determine how well a megacity qualifies. They are: Community - How easy it it to find and build community? Safety - Is the location physically safe to travel, or are there pockets that are safe to travel? Internet - Is the average internet speed strong enough to support working online? Cost of living - Is the cost of goods/accommodations sustainable to live for at least a month? Coworking - Are there cafes or coworking centers available, or will you be stuck in your accomodations? Transportation - Is it easy to get around by foot/transit, or is everything a hassle to get to? Based on these six criteria, we came up with a list of seven locations that fit the bill. Some better than others, but all were within what we considered acceptable levels. Without giving away all the details, we will give you just a little teaser into the countries we discuss: Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Portugal, Argentina, Spain and Brazil.
