Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The 1950's was arguably the golden age of science fiction. Movies, books, comics, and cover art seemed to be part of the era's zeitgiest. James H. Nicholson and Samuel Z. Arkoff opened up American International Pictures which became one of the leaders in science fiction cinema. They were also the folks that discovered such talents as Roger Corman. In 1955, the film, The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues, was the second feature on a dual bill with Roger Corman's Day the World Ended. When the bodies of fishermen and beachgoers begin to wash ashore, a motley group of folks take notice. A college professor, a scientist, a government agent, and a foreign spy all coalesce upon this small tourist village. What they discover is uranium ore has breached the ocean's floor causing havoc to the townsfolk. Yet, as everyone digs further into the matter, they soon discover that a more ominous presence may be living within the depths of the ocean. With the threat of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation, and dangers from foreign shores, many science fiction films of the era played into these fears. The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues was no exception. One of the lesser known films of the era, yet having a small but strong cult following, the film has recently been rediscovered with its blu-ray release. Part 4 of 5 episodes of our Killer Fish Fest month, Dark Discussions takes a look at this film from our grandparents' generation. Mark Irwin was the director of photography for D2. He talks with Mike, Tommy, and Kevin about how shooting porn gave him the connections to move up in the film world, how he dealt with cardboard cutouts as crowd members, his knucklepuck rig, and more. Show Notes This is Mark's website, where you can see some of his work. Here's his IMDB page. Some photos Mark shared with us from his time on the films: The famous Sam Z. Arkoff that Mark mentions. Mark's career took off after Blood and Guts turned into a job on Fast Company.  You should all watch Youngblood which stars Rob Lowe as Dean Youngblood, a talented scorer who goes off to play juniors in Canada. FYI Sam Wiseman was the director of D2. You probably already know who Steve Brill is. The best skaters: Josh Jackson (Charlie Conway), Shaun Weiss (Greg Goldberg), Garette Ratliff Henson (Guy Germaine), Marguerite Moreau (Connie Moreau), Ty O'Neal (Dwayne Robertson), Mike Vitar (Luis Mendoza) Tim Horton played mostly for the Maple Leafs. Dick Duff played mostly for the Maple Leafs and Canadiens. Jean Beliveau played for the Canadiens. Eric Nesterenko played for the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks. Gretzky's famous melted loonie into the ice came on American soil at the 2004 Olympics in Salt Lake City. Canada actually was on in the Junior Goodwill Games the U.S. beat them on a briefly seen newspaper headline. Here's the IMDB to Diary of a Sinner, Mark's first movie. The page is SFW. "Say yes to everything. You'll end up at the North Pole, you'll end up at some sweaty strip club, you'll end up at the bottom of a uranium mine like I did. Say yes to everything because what you learn is what will teach others and those other people will take you with them." Thanks to @garrettgreen for the #QuackQuestion. Here is Belmont High School. There is an aerial picture here. To avoid any copyright infringement I'm just going to link to it. The Layover is in post production. It's slated to come out in 2016.

This week we’re watching the uncomfortable 1972 film, The Thing with Two Heads, Heads? Steve Carlson joins Paul & Chris to review this film labeled incorrectly as comedy, scifi and horror. Spoiler alert: it should just be labeled bad. This film is produced by Samuel Z. Arkoff who Chris confuses with Dr. Zarkov from Flash Gordon. Steve shares that 7 time, Oscar winning make up artist, Rick Baker was the man in the 2-headed gorilla costume. Paul is reminded of Tropic Thunder when he hears the racist doctor in the film say, “you people.” They need a brain dead patient in the film. Too bad they couldn’t break the 4th wall and choose one of us audience members. Rosie Grier gets his own death march disco. One of the prisoners makes Chris think of his favorite Dolemite character, the creeper. We all agree the best line in the film, “Do you have two of anything else?” Paul, Chris and Steve recast the film for a remake. Will Smith & Mark Walberg, Chris Rock & Phil Robertson, Jamie Foxx & Jon Lovitz and a few others. Scroll down the Wikipedia page and learn The Arkoff formula for successful films. Suggested films Critters and Planet of the Apes. Thanks again to Steve for joining us! Support Film Frown on Patreon
