Travis Gribble retired in February of 2022 after 23 years in law enforcement. For half of his career, he worked in Michigan for a small Sheriff's Department, and then the other half was in Mesa, Arizona. Travis served in a SWAT capacity for a total of 16 years with 9 of those years being full-time SWAT in Mesa. In 2016, after being on the Mesa full-time team and being an Assistant Team Leader, Travis made the decision to test for Sergeant. The first step after the test finalization is what Mesa calls the "Step" program, a training program officers must complete before being officially promoted. In simple terms, it's really a ride-along with a senior Sergeant who shows you the ropes. The start of Travis's training began in January of 2016, working the day shift. His very first call out of the station, on his very first training day, was the call that changed his life. The next five years were hell and ultimately led to Travis seeking his retirement, after getting the help he needed.

Mark knows the true meaning of sacrifice, perseverance, and resilience. Mark served as a Navy SEAL Special Warfare Operator 1st Class with SEAL Team 5A. As a Navy SEAL, Mark did combat deployments to Iraq. On his last deployment, Mark sustained a gunshot wound to the head from a bullet that went over his rifle through his right eye and out the back of his head a few inches behind his right ear. The injury left him blind in his right eye. Even though Mark was gravely wounded, he refused to be carried to the medivac helicopter. He walked himself through a ‘hot zone' to be transported to a medical facility.Against all odds, Mark worked through his critical injury and recovered. During his first few years of recovery, mobility, endurance, awareness, and memory were significantly affected, but Mark was determined to enter a new career path in law enforcement. After leaving the Navy, Mark began working at the Lake County Sheriff's Office and shortly thereafter completed the Police Academy. Since beginning employment, he has been to several law enforcement/investigations-related qualification courses. Mark is continuing his career at the Lake County Sheriff's Office as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division. He is assigned to the Sheriff's Office Tactical Response Team as an Assistant Team Leader and is a member of the community safety team.

Is there anything that is holding you back from pursuing your goals? Perhaps a fear? A disability? In this episode of MAD Talks podcast, our hosts, Big Jay and Small J, exchange stories with our guest, Ate Yssa, a MAD Volunteer, on how her medical condition (Meningitis) did not hinder her from doing what she wants, most especially in helping other people through volunteerism. In fact, she's currently an Engineer, who does research on renewable energy. She was a MAD Talks Speaker for MAD Zamboanga and MAD Ilocos in 2017. She was also an Assistant Team Leader for MAD Talks Zamboanga in 2018. Wow! What more can't she do? This goes to prove that disability does not define a person's life and will not stop anyone from doing good work. As what she said, “Ability counts rather than disability.” Props to Ate Yssa for inspiring other people to never hold back despite having a condition! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/iammad/message
