Once ridden by Chinese Emperors and world leaders, the Akhal-Teke has a rich history. Now there are less than 5,000 of them remaining in the world. Danielle Splaine a member of the Akhal-Teke Association of America shares the history of these horses as well as the characteristics they have that led them to being the horse of choice for the once-great leaders. This horse for Turkmenistan has a long neck and slender body. Splaine explains that the horse is known for its speed, endurance, and loyalty to its rider. Former Pittsburgh Pirate closer and World Series Champion Kent Tekulve joins Tim in this special extended episode. With that in mind, we're going to get right to our interview. But before we do, I think I owe it to you to give you some of the basics. Kent Tekulve is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. He was a tall, skinny reliever and a closer in his career, which included stops in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Cincinnati. You can learn a ton if all you do is search for his name online, and you'll get all his stats. But I have to say, there is one stat they got wrong. Kent is listed at 6'4” on all of the breakdowns. That is simply not true. Kent Tekulve pitched in more than 1,000 major league games during the 1970s and 80s. He recorded an unbelievable 184 saves. He was a closer, and if you know anything about baseball, closers are the coolest dudes on the roster. They come in when the pressure's on and they close out the game. He's most known as a Pittsburgh Pirate, but not just any Pirate. Kent was the pitcher on the mound to get the last out of the seventh game in the 9th inning of the 1979 World Series. This was the last time the Pirates made it to the World Series, and the last time they won a World Series. Kent was on the mound in Baltimore for that feat. He came up in the minors with the Pirates and played in his first major league game in 1974. He's  was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for 16 years, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds. He was best known as a side-arm pitcher who threw the final pitch to help the Pittsburgh Pirates win the 1979 World Series. Tekulve graduated from Marietta College in Ohio, and then signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for them until 1985.  His most memorable seasons were 1978 and 1979 when he saved 31 games and posted ERAs of 2.33 ('78) and 2.75 ('79). In 1979, he was key to the Pirates World Series season and in Game 7 of the World Series that year in Baltimore. In 1985, the Pirates traded him to the Phillies. In 1989, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds, retiring from baseball at mid-season. Tekulve led the National League in games pitched four times, appearing in 90 or more games three times. He is one of two pitchers (also Mike Marshall) in baseball history to appear in 90 or more games more than once. They did it three times each. Tekulve had three saves in the 1979 World Series, which tied the single-Series mark set by Pittsburgh Pirate Elroy Face in the 1960 World Series. That record would stand until 1996. Tekulve holds the National League record for career innings pitched in relief (1,436+2⁄3). For a time, he held the major league record for career relief appearances - 1,050 career games, all in relief. Tekulve holds career records for most appearances and innings pitched without making a single start. He still resides in the Pittsburgh area.

A près d'un mois des élections générales en RDC, plusieurs poches d'insécurité sont signalées à travers le pays. Cette insécurité concerne notamment les conflits intercommunautaires entre les luba et katangais à Malemba Nkulu, dans la province du Haut-Lomami.  Selon plusieurs sources, ce conflit a déjà fait près de 5 morts et plusieurs blessées.  Lors de son discours sur l'état de la nation, mardi 14 novembre dernier, le président Félix Tshisekedi exprimait sa peur de voir ce conflit dégénérer et causer plus des dégâts comme à Kwamouth, dans le Mai-Ndombe, des suites du conflit entre les Teke et Yaka, deux communautés de cette contrée. La situation de Malemba Nkulu est purement historique. Elle « est une corde sensible de la politique congolaise exploitée par les politiciens congolais en mal de positionnement » car le peuple de Malembe Nkulu et celui du Kasaï sont un même peuple, pour avoir appartenu à l'ancien empire Luba. C'est ce que pense Muambayi Cibangù, chercheur indépendant sur la « lubaïtude » et l'histoire du peuple Luba, auteur et coauteur de plusieurs ouvrages sur cette question. Parmi ces ouvrages nous pouvons citer : « l'appel de Mbidi Kiluwa : un réveil à la conscience Luba », paru aux éditions du Net en 2014, « L'humain congolais : Ilunga Mbidi, paru aux éditions Pôle Isis en 2016 et « L'union des lubas : le rempart de l'unité du Congo », paru en 2022 aux éditions Pôle Isis. Comment, à travers différents moments de l'histoire depuis la colonisation jusqu'à nos jours, les acteurs politiques ont joué sur la division des deux peuples pour des fins politiques ? Quelle incidence a cette division sur l'unité nationale ? Que faire pour permettre une cohabitation pacifique entre les deux peuples en cette période électorale ? We're back from our trip to the San Juan Islands, which can comfortably be said to be one of the most beautiful places on the planet.  It's full of natural beauty and interesting creatures, so on the way over to geographical bliss, you'll stand on the windswept deck of the Anacortes ferry, viewing and smelling glorious the forested stretches of Sitka spruce, western red cedar and shore pines which blanket the shoreline of the Salish Sea and the Olympic Peninsula.  You'll be amazed by the local residents – things like seals, Bald Eagles, migrating salmon, Orcas, and Akhal-Teke horses.  Wait.  What?  The beautifully exotic horse from Turkmenistan?  Yep, they were there too.  The ever-gracious Amrita Ibold set up an amazing visit, which not only included a visit to the so-friendly-they-could-be-dogs Akhal-Teke horses themselves (favorites from our last visit), but also a truly exotic interview with Gul Muhammet and his friend, representatives and leaders from the Turkmenian community in Seattle.  To top it off, there were authentic costumes and tack for our cameras to capture, and a beach and forest ride featuring the amazing equines.  As an experience, it will be hard to top this one in the BYGF universe.Turkmenistan is not too far from Ukraine, another place we hear a lot about these days.  As you listen to today's podcast, we hope you might think about the people who can appreciate the current impact of all of those things we hear on the news, and write in history books.  Keeping the “Culture” part of agri-Culture is what it's all about.  It's the “living” part of our living history.Links:http://www.akhalteke.cc/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salish_Seahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkmenistanhttps://www.britannica.com/place/Turkmenistan/Turkmen-tribes-and-Russian-invasion Support the show

Se cuenta que hace muchos años una chica cayó por accidente a las vías del tren cuando este ya estaba muy cerca. Naturalmente el operador no pudo frenar a tiempo. Esto dio lugar a una escena verdaderamente grotesca, pues la muchacha quedó partida en dos desde la cintura. Lamentablemente ella no tuvo una muerte rápida, y todavía estaba consiente cuando varios curiosos se acercaron. Nadie podía hacer nada para salvarla. Su muerte estaba anunciada. La mayoría acudió al lugar del accidente por morbo. Incluso, se dice que algunos fueron demasiado insensibles y tuvieron el atrevimiento de fotografiarla. Ella murió estando consciente de todo esto. En Japón, se dice que debes evitar a toda costa transitar cerca de vías de tren por la noche, especialmente cuando no hay nadie cerca. Ya que el espíritu vengativo de la chica suele rondar por esos sitios. Algunos cuentan que han sido perseguidos por una joven desfigurada, sin piernas, que va arrastrándose con la ayuda de sus manos. Todos coinciden en escuchar el sonido de sus huesos crujiendo. Motivo por el cual, la nombraron “Teke-Teke”, haciendo referencia a la forma en que estos se escuchan cuando se mueve. Algunos cadáveres de personas han sido encontrados partidos por la mitad. Algunos atribuyen esto a accidentes ferroviarios, muy similares a la tragedia que dio pie a esta leyenda. In this latest edition of Podcasts from the Edge Peter Bruce talks to Seriti Resources CEO Mike Teke about the choppy waters suddenly surrounding the agreement to take over the vast coal-mining resources of South32. Combined with the Anglo American coal business Seriti has already acquired, the South32 mines would make Mike Teke the biggest single coal-supplier to Eskom, SA's debt-drunk power utility. But there's a problem — one of the South 32 mines supplies directly to Eskom's critical Duvha power station and it loses money with every delivery. Teke says he won't do the deal until Eskom agrees a better coal price for the supplying mine. The National Treasury won't give it permission to pay. But without the mine Duvha would close and that would bring even more chaos to the power grid. What is to be done? South 32, desperate to get rid of the assets, has since offered Seriti $250m over the next decade. That'll help, says Teke but he still wants to hear what the Treasury does with a second approach from Eskom. He wants the current price of R280/t of coal increased to R550 a tonne. That may sound a lot but Teke reminds Bruce that coal export prices are now well above R1000/t. A deal will be done, says Teke, and he'd even be prepared to share ownership of the Duvha mine if one of the many losing bidders for the South 32 assets would like to try their luck.
