As Ben Grimes will tell you, he never set out to be an attorney, but as a Blackhawk pilot who realized that continued service in the Army meant transitioning out of the cockpit to staff duty, decided to become the "staffiest"of all staff officers by becoming a JAG. A self-described "legal ethics geek," Ben then jumped at the opportunity to provide professional ethics advice to attorneys at the Department of Justice, a job which he held for almost seven years. However, realizing that he missed leading, Ben has now become a leadership coach with a focus on helping lawyers and firms break through dysfunction. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tom-welsh/support

In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Ben Grimes discuss:What it means to be a good leader (and how to get better if you aren't currently one). Why leadership is difficult for lawyers.4 pillars you should look for in a leader.Preparing yourself to lead people and what inspires people in a leader. Key Takeaways:Like with sales, leadership is not taught in law school, but it is something you can learn. When you can demonstrate authenticity at work, you open up the door to allow others to bring their authentic selves to their career.Leadership is more than just leading an organization. Leadership appears at all levels of your law firm and life. You don't need a title to be a leader. You don't need to be a manager to be a leader.Your values need to be reflected in the actions of the law firm. "Not only are we promoted in positions of leadership because of our substantive skills, we're also trained away from critical capacities for leadership. And what I mean by that is, we're trained to do things ourselves. And so we're training ourselves not to be good leaders, because of the way we practice law." —  Ben Grimes Thank you to our Sponsors!Overture: https://overture.law/Moneypenny: https://www.moneypenny.com/us/Get Visible: https://www.getvisible.com/ Episode References: Pat Conroy - https://patconroy.com/books/Some of My Best Friends Are…Podcast - https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/some-of-my-best-friends-areRevisionist History Podcast - https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/revisionist-history About Ben Grimes: With a passion for developing collaborative legal teams, inclusive law firm cultures, and skilled, confident legal leaders, Ben Grimes brings decades of experience as a practitioner and leader to his coaching, consulting, and development clients. Joe Koopsen, Jordan Green, and Ben Grimes all shared their answers to the following questions: 1. What kind of changes came in March within each of your market streams? (Percentages or other way of describing it are fine) 2. When was the peak of pandemic buying for your farm business? Where are you now in relationship to the peak and the pre-pandemic status quo? 3. What strategies have you been using to hold onto your new customers? 4. What have you done to adapt in order to meet the demand in production, distribution and marketing? 5. What are your guesses for what the future might look like? 6. How are you, your family doing, adapting? 7. Anything else you want to add? Thanks again for everyone participating. Good luck out there with any and all future fluctuations!

Ben is a smart farmer who knows and understands his farm, his processing business, and his numbers, and is thoughtful and wise about how to use them to pursue his goals.  If you're someone who processes poultry, or has poultry processed by someone else, stay tuned. If you're someone who raises and sells ducks, or is interested in raising and selling ducks, stay tuned. If you're someone who would like to see farmers market sales go way up, stay tuned. And if you're someone who likes to see how people are solving problems on their farms, in their context, with creative solutions that you can learn from, then, as always stay tuned! A couple of notes: I plan to continue to release episodes at the beginning of the week each week for a while. I hope to be dependable in that. second. This is my last "recorded in a Jetta" episode that i have in the kitty. I hope its not too distracting. And I hope that you'll enjoy better sound quality in the future. And three: my email is info@grocefamilyfarm.com if you'd like to give me any feedback. I'd love to hear from you!    Ben's course can be purchased through our friends at grassfed life, grassfedlife.co.    While I'm mentioning them: A note about Darby and Diego and grassfed life: Those guys have provided myself and many others I know, and many of you listening a lot of value through their podcast and courses and mentorship, and they have in many ways inspired and helped me to create this podcast. They have also partnered with Ben and I at separate times to create education for farmers. So I just want to say for myself, that I appreciate that they have, in many ways, shared their platforms and audiences in order to help us out and partner with us when they didn't have to.    You can find out more about Ben at Dawnbreakerfarms.com, or Dawnbreaker Farms on all the Social media. Again, thanks to Ben. He's become a good friend, and someone who's example I look to when trying to figure out how to make my farm better. It takes a lot of pieces to make a farm business viable. This episode is a special episode that addresses a question submitted to us by listener Ben Grimes of Dawnbreaker Farms.   Ben's question was a simple one, but the answer wasn't simple or straightforward.  Like many things when it comes to farming there's a lot of nuance and variability involved.   Given that this episode is effectively two parts.   Part one is Ben's questions along with an interview with Ben help add some supporting details and context.   Part Two is Darby's answer to that question.   If you are listening to this the first time, then it makes sense to listen to the hole episode chronologically.   If you are coming back to this episode for a second time, and you just want to hear how Darby would tackle Ben's question, then you can skip ahead to 41:00.
