Searches of innocent passengers at airport boarding gates continue nationwide as federal drug officers look for cash they can seize.Atlanta News First Investigates documented the practice in the series In Plane Sight, showing how plainclothes officers confront passengers who've already successfully cleared inspections by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).In court records, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and federal prosecutors describe these stops as “cold consent encounters.” Multiple videos recorded by passengers show their consent was compelled by agents who told them they would otherwise miss their flights, or face a drug dog screening and a long wait for a search warrant.Read the full story here: https://www.atlantanewsfirst.com/2024/08/14/new-video-shows-its-nearly-impossible-say-no-dea-searches-airport-gates/

Kieran talks with Hennie Verbeek-Kusters, head of the Netherlands financial intelligence unit, about her leadership over the FIU since its founding in 2008. During their discussion, Hennie details how the Dutch FIU has evolved to face the challenge of evermore sophisticated transnational criminal organizations and the professional money launderers they now utilize. The effort to track and seize drug money has, she says, taken on a new urgency with the unprecedented rise of violence by organized drug traffickers in the Netherlands in past few years.
Send us a Text Message.Javier tells going from small bust operations in Austin, Texas to ending up on the case of Pablo Escobar in Colombia. Out of the academy he was hoping for a bigger city but ended up in Austin. After applying to go to Mexico, he was given Colombia. The eye-opening experience of dealing with Pablo Escobar who was hiding drugs in fruit and humans which we ended up on one of the biggest cases in the world!Javier knew Pablo very well from all the studying he did such as his informants, family, drug movements, money, etc. He explains Narco Terrorism and the extent of how Pablo would get people to kill for him by buying them houses and providing for their families. Pablo placed bounties on police officers of $100 for each one killed. In 1989 Escobar put a bomb on a commercial airline to kill a presidential candidate that killed 109 innocent people, a bus with dynamite in front of a building killed more, and the one that made him Enemy #1 in the world was he killed the presidential candidate at his rally. Extradition was eventually signed, which was the green light for Javier and his team. Was there an order to kill Escobar? His self-surrender with his own penthouse prison and how he was later found after the DEA found his frequency that resulted in his killing by the Colombian National Police. Pablo's motto was that he preferred a tomb in Colombia versus a jail cell in the United States. Javier said he was probably worth more than $30 Billion at the time of his death! TD Bank has been plagued by concerns about its anti-money-laundering capabilities for over a year. In March 2023, they tried to acquire the U.S. based bank First Horizon Corp. Regulatory issues delayed the acquisition, and in May 2023, the deal fell through. The extent of TD's anti-money-laundering issues weren't clear until now, when it's revealed that TD is involved in a U.S. investigation of a US$653 million money-laundering and drug-trafficking operation. Tim Kiladze, financial reporter and columnist for the Globe, is on the show to talk about TD's alleged lack of oversight and what this means for the bank – and its customers – going forward.Questions? For two years, twin brothers Chris and Jeff George along with their friend Derik Nolan, ran the largest pain clinic in the United States. They didn't really care about alleviating people's pain. They cared about the profits selling opioids could make. Florida's laws didn't address the fact that none of the men had any medical training to help addicts. They had no training in counseling to help addicts. They were in it because the money was big. Unfortunately, the addictions the drugs fueled were even bigger. This week's guest, Christina Dent, founded End It For Good out of her desire to invite others to listen to the voices directly impacted by our drug laws. She hopes that more people will explore the root causes of drug-related harm and consider a different approach. She is currently writing a book on the research and experiences that changed her mind about the best path forward to help people thrive, even in a world where harmful drugs exist. Christiana and I had an incredible conversation, and what I learned made me think a lot about 1 Peter 5:8 from the CEV, which says: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Keeping ourselves sober in the sense of being clear minded applies to us all. The enemy of our souls is actively searching for ways to destroy us like the lions we see on the Discovery Channel. They don't chase after the strongest gazelle in the herd. They want to find one who is weak, who is apart from the support of the herd, and isn't able to notice the danger they are in until it's too late. Addiction to ANYTHING can cloud our judgment and make us vulnerable to the evil that is in this world. I say this a lot when I'm giving safety information to people - criminals are looking for the easiest targets they can find. They don't want problems, they want to give YOU problems. We have to be watchful like Scripture says, and that's hard to do when our senses are dulled and we allow ourselves to be distracted. And yes, I said “allowed” ourselves. We can learn to focus on what we really need to and block out all of the rest, like service dogs do. I've put a link to a video of dogs being trained to ignore loud noises, toys, and even snacks so they can protect the person they are going to be caring for. Maybe we need the same training to become the best service people we can be! Just for fun, I've also put in a link to a service dog in training who we all probably look like at one time or another. In the 1980's and 1990's, thanks to cocaine, soccer in Colombia had never been better. Drug cartels laundered their dirty money through soccer clubs. High salaries kept players in their home country, as did the improved facilities, and the money pouring into impoverished neighborhoods. However, Colombian soccer players were caught up in controversy when they attended parties thrown by notorious drug kingpins. One such player, Andrés Escobar, even participated in a wild soccer match held behind prison walls, featuring an audience of armed guards and the country's most feared man. Soccer was serious business in Colombia – life or death business. Andrés Escobar would find out just how serious when he scored a dreaded own goal during the 1994 World Cup.Follow Badlands wherever you get your podcasts to hear new episodes every Wednesday, or binge the entire new season right now only on Amazon Music amazon.com/badlands.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

End of the Road is a thriller about people doing desperate things, starring Queen Latifah and Ludacris.Chris “Ludacris” Bridges' character Reggie finds himself in an isolated roadside motel, staring down a bag full of shrink-wrapped cash stashed near a man left for dead. Reggie grabs that bag, ignoring the lessons learned in movies like No Country for Old Men and A Simple Plan, where easy money comes with a body count.Maybe Reggie felt the rules in that genre don't apply since those movies were always about white people. End of the Road sets itself apart chiefly by leaning into its Black cast and crew, headlined by Queen Latifah. The movie climaxes with her announcing, “I make my own rules.”By the time that mic drop moment comes, End of the Road has already detoured from unconvincing thriller about people doing desperate things for a bag of cartel money into territory that's far more goofy and parodic, though that can be pleasurable in its own right. Who wouldn't enjoy watching Queen Latifah break free from zip ties with sheer might to beat down a trailer park full of neo-Nazis?Queen Latifah plays Brenda, a woman at the end of her rope, mourning her husband who recently died from cancer. She mortgaged their LA home to afford his chemo. Now he's gone and so is their home. Brenda, her level-headed teenage daughter Kelly (Mychala Faith Lee), preadolescent son Cam (Shaun Dixon) and charmingly irresponsible brother Reggie pack up in their SUV to move to Houston. They deal with some roadside microaggressions along the way before stopping at a motel in Arizona. That's where they hear a commotion and a gunshot in the room next door. In that moment, Brenda announces to her family that she's an emergency room nurse – as if they didn't already know – and leaps out to treat the victim to no avail. The victim is also a goon who crossed a cloak-and-dagger villain named Mr Cross by stealing his money. Reggie is in the mood to do the same.Soon Brenda is getting cryptic rings from what sounds like the caller from the Scary Movie franchise. It's actually Mr Cross. He doesn't do movie trivia but he does like to play games. What unfolds is a race-against-the-clock thriller with road rage and racists that's mostly predictable, save for a couple of howl-worthy developments. The action is clumsy. The writing leans on tropes. The dramatic scenes overestimate the artistic range of a charming rapper-turned-actor like Bridges. And director Millicent Shelton makes some curious stylistic decisions along the way, whether it's amethyst lighting or montages that have the feel of an R&B music video. The latter aesthetic makes sense when you consider Shelton's background. She got her start working wardrobe on Do the Right Thing and directing music videos for artists like Kwamé and Salt-N-Pepa before writing and directing television as wide-ranging as 30 Rock and P-Valley. Just being a Black woman working behind the scenes in Hollywood for more than three decades makes Shelton somewhat of an unsung icon. And there are moments in End of the Road that are probably as powerful as they are because of her perspective. The opening shot, for instance, introduces us to Brenda through the convex security mirror in a gas station convenience store, immediately reminding us how the people in the movie perceive a dreadlocked woman. She's someone to be surveilled. And Queen Latifah's finest moment in the movie is a scene where Brenda gets to sit in her feelings, exhausted from how much she must grin and bear it.Well into their road trip, but before the money comes into the picture, the family is accosted by two dangerously aggressive racist hillbillies with a rifle in their pickup truck. There's a game of chicken and then a confrontation on the road. To defuse the situation and ensure the safety of her Black family, Brenda apologizes to them, an extreme humiliation considering what they've just been through. When the white men laugh it all off as though they've been joking all along, it's excruciating to watch the soulful, angry and hurt performance Queen Latifah gives – as if trying to choke down her own tears. This is a movie that has very few authentic moments, and plenty of absurd ones. But that tiny performance, directed by a fellow Black woman, rings heartbreakingly true. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

If you ask law enforcement, the North Carolina Unauthorized Substance Tax provides valuable revenue without burdening taxpayers, and only punishes people participating in criminal activity. But the reality is more complicated. Sometimes, yes, it's a drug trafficker, rightfully convicted, who ends up paying these fines. But sometimes, it's a family member that suffers — and sometimes it's a totally innocent person. On this episode, we unpack the complicated legacy of a tax law many people don't even know exists.

Boxing has very little left to sell. It's soul long gone, now it pawns off the biggest prize in individual sport - the Heavyweight title - to a known crime boss. As Daniel Kinahan gets lauded for being the man who gets things done, Capital Sports asks yet again, just why is boxing in thrall to scum like this and fighters and coaches so happy to take his blood money. Plus Central Asia soccer, hypocrisy in dealing with racism and an NBA player coming out about sex abuse.

Episode 05 | 44 for 44 - The Obama Conspiracies (Thanks, Obama!)Host: Derek DeWittThe 44th US President sure had a lot of theories about him. Was he really a cocaine-fueled, murdering, gay, inter-dimensional, Satanic, Mars-visiting lizard who could control the weather?Every leader of a country, or anyone that much in the public eye, is sure to engender a number of conspiracy theories. But the 44th president, Barack Obama, sure seemed to get more than his fair share of them. Some were almost certainly externally expressed fears of black retribution, or good old fashioned racism, while others were clearly just slanderous disinformation by those who opposed him politically and philosophically. But, boy oh boy, some of the rumors were real doozies. Another new episode! Two in one week! Slow this ride down! Quick, let me off before I throw up on you! Too late! I'm so sorry! Kate Huffman is my guest this week, and oh man does she kick ass. She's been touring her incredible one-woman show I'm Too Fat For This Show around LA, Chicago, Connecticut, Indiana, and even Ireland. IRELAND. What have you ever brought to Ireland besides your love of Guiness and your desire to say "cheers" to everything? That's what I thought. Kate's show bravely deals with her own personal issues with her eating disorder and OCD that she's lived with for most of her life. It's brave, it's funny, it's sad, it's brilliantly human and realized in a way that most people don't get to see in their lives. I love everything about her and this show and what it represents. If you live in Indiana and happen to go to IU Kokomo, you're in luck! Kate Huffman will be performing her show there on February 27th. If you live in LA, she'll be performing a short segment of the show for the LA Women's Theatre Festival on March 31st at 3pm. You can get more info on that here: http://www.lawtf.org/ Kate also regularly performs with her sketch team Sidekick and Drug Money around the LA area, so be on the lookout for her by following her FB page: https://www.facebook.com/ImTooFatforThisShow/ Thanks and enjoy!
