Former Polygon games journalist Ben Kuchera took to Twitter recently to rant about the website, its higher-ups, vaccinations, and sexual abuse. We break down his tweet tirade and discuss other topics, including the ongoing trend of uglify-ing classic female video game characters, a pointless in-game climate march in a Ubisoft game, and yet more claims that D&D is racist.

Jalada and Sefran talk further about what you need to think about when running your own LAN, as well as discussing some of the history of LAN parties and events and the state of the community today. We cover a lot in the show, but there's a lot more to it. Here's some related reading from what we covered, and some bits we didn't: Internet cafés. Copyparties and Demoparties. Revision is one of the largest Demoparties that's still going in southwest Germany. Some demoparties have also morphed into LAN parties & gaming events such as The Gathering and Assembly which are both still going in 2016. The Demoscene. Some examples of modern demos. Check the file sizes! 1999 BBC article about the first Insomnia event. “Gaming has left the LAN party behind” by Ben Kuchera for Polygon. Dreamhack. Multiplay Insomnia Gaming Festival. Running your own LAN: If you need a network switch, remember you need an extra ‘uplink' port to your router. Example switches for small LANs: 8 ports for £21, 16 ports for £50*. To protect your attendees' equipment you may want to think about providing RCD circuit breakers and surge protection plugs. Power supply calculator for calculating average attendee power usage. Running a ‘LANcache' to save bandwidth and speed up downloads. More ideas and information from UKLP (some a little out of date). If you have any more questions feel free to get in touch and ask, and let us know about your successful LAN party!Intro & outro music: JACKS – Runaway Fashion*Links are affiliate links. Some interesting discussions popped up around the selection of this year's Miss America. Social networks were ablaze with this story from BuzzFeed which chronicled many racist Tweets about the crowing of Nina Davuluri, the first Indian-American to win the title. From there, Ben Kuchera at Penny Arcade and Alyssia Rosenberg from Think progress posted responses to the idea that public shaming might be used as a learning tool in these situations. We discuss the idea of public shaming and whether or not it is an effective tactic for dealing with ideological differences. Scott and I like to think we are experts on the subjects of jerks, meany-heads, curmudgeonly folk, and brutes. Yet while our opinions on assholes might be settled, the role of the creative asshole in the games industry is still hotly debated. This week on the EXP Podcast, Scott and I wonder if maybe our best game designers are naturally assholes, if their behavior is positive for the industry, and what it means to maintain a healthy public persona. We do hope you let us know your thoughts in the comments, we'll be nice, we promise. The Mass Effect 3 fervor remains in full swing, and while many are already growing tired of the backlash against Bioware, it would be a missed opportunity to not discuss ramifications of player-driven protestations. Of course this is a grand subject, so we could not handle it alone. Kris Ligman of Critical Distance and Dire Critic joins us this week to discuss player entitlement, authorial intent, and all the drama surrounding the color-coded end of Commander Shepard. As always, we would love to hear your thoughts on the controversy in the comments section below. Those of you that follow the video game industry know that the fall and winter months are traditionally home to the most anticipated games of the year. Nearly every week of November and December features at least one stand out game that is widely anticipated and more often than not delivers on the hype it generates. My guest for Episode 107 is Ben Kuchera, Gaming Editor for Ars Technica. He is one of the writers whose job is to cover all of these games. His nights involve typing thousands of words, dealing with the passionate yet sometimes misguided video game fans, drinking lots of Red Bull and playing some fantastic video games. We discuss his work at Ars Technica, the positives and negatives of being a (mostly) one-man crew and much, much more. Enjoy.
