This episode is for anyone who has gone through a friendship breakup, or who desires finding a best friend as an adult. Every week on this show I encourage you to take the prompts and topics to a best friend in order to have a deeper conversation and better connection. But what if you don't have a best friend? What if you used to have a best friend but now you don't and that pain still lingers? What if you want a best friend, but have no idea how to find that person? In honor of my book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs celebrating its book birthday this week, I wanted to rerun this episode from January 2021 with Heather Adams. Even though we recorded this years before The Life Council came out, you can see how I was already threading together the ideas that would eventually become the book.Buy The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs on amazon or on bookshopFollow my guest Heather Adams, founder of Choice Media CommunicationsRead my free Secret Posts or become a SECRET STUFF member on Laura Tremaine's Secret SubstackFULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode!CLICK HERE for episode show notesFOLLOW @10ThingsToTellYou on InstagramFOLLOW @10ThingsToTellYou on FacebookSIGN UP for episode emails, links, and show notesJOIN Laura Tremaine's SECRET SUBSTACKBUY THE BOOK: Share Your Stuff. The guys are all very excited about Tourplay releasing the Secret League teams to be used in competitions. While FUMBBL is all well and good, who would be sad to make, paint, and play an actual Squig team! We also spend a considerable time recapping the Hammerslam and the role that generative AI could play in future tournaments - as well as an interview with the cahmpion, Chris Cameron! Tournaments on the horizon abound as we also preview the Cry Fowl Cup and others. Come take a listen to the ramblings!

A few times a year, I like to let you listen in on the conversations we're having in the Secret Stuff patreon community. Each month we meet twice over zoom to talk about something culturally relevant (we call this Symposium) or to talk about books (a pretty traditional Book Club). This Secret Stuff meeting was a bit of a mashup of the two.  When it was announced that icon and legend Britney Spears was releasing a memoir this fall, I knew it would make a splash in the publishing industry and in the celebrity world. And it did. The Woman In Me sold over a million copies in it's first week of release and there were a few bombshell's from the singer's life, most notably about her relationship with Justin Timberlake.  But what is just as fascinating about the content of the book is the way she chose to tell it, and that she was able to tell it at all. After 13 years in a conservatorship held by father, where everything she did was tracked and controlled, Britney is finally free to share her side of the story. As usual, the Secret Stuff community had smart, thoughtful, and compassionate takes on the memoir itself and on Britney's place in music history and our pop culture lexicon. This episode is for anyone who has asked themselves why they're so invested in what is clearly outrageous, manipulative, and phony "reality" television shows.  I watch Real Housewives every weekday on my lunch break, and as I've gone through phases of watching with both fascination and disgust, I've asked myself: why do smart people love dumb tv? What is it that we're drawn to? Why do we get so sucked into the drama? Is it aspirational or escapism or something darker or is it just not that deep?  And so I decided to explore that topic with the perfect guest: Matt Marr, cohost of the Reality Gays podcast. In this episode, Matt and I talk about our history of reality tv watching (starting with the Real World in the 90s), and we talk about how we think reality TV has changed culture, why we're so invested in the lives of these reality TV personas, and so much more. We talked for over an hour and didn't even scratch the surface of all that we could have discussed.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE We do have an extended cut version of this episode over on the Secret Stuff patreon page, where Matt and I talk about our shared Oklahoma roots and I'll also be releasing a personal episode over there this week about my time working in reality television in the early 2000s.  For all that bonus material, SIGN UP FOR SECRET STUFF HERE.  You can listen more of Matt on the Reality Gays podcast  Follow Matt Marr on social media   SPONSORS: Uncommon Goods // Go to UncommonGoods.com/YOU for 15% off your order   MENTIONED in this episode: Instagram Christopher Ryan Stamey - @christopherryanstamey  90 Day Fiancé on TLC  Real Housewives franchise on Bravo  RuPaul's Drag Race on MTV  Passions Soap Opera on NBC  The Real World on MTV Duck Dynasty on A&E  Bittersweet by Susan Cain Indian Matchmaking on Netflix  Love is Blind on Netflix Married at First Sight on Lifetime  Pig Royalty on Amazon Prime Video  Nanny 911, now on Amazon Prime Video  Doggy Fizzle Televizzle on MTV  Crowned on FOX  America's Next Top Model on UPN/The CW  Joe Millionaire on FOX The Swan on FOX  90 Day Fiancé: The Last Resort on TLC  The Golden Bachelor on ABC    If you liked this episode you may like: Ep 189: About the Hollywood Strikes and How They Affect You   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! Chief among those is my friend Cyndi Finkle - a woman who so greatly influenced me when I moved to Los Angeles that I can trace so many of my decisions to her and her example. Welcome to the final episode in my Friendship Stories series.  My guest today is someone you might recognize if you've ever emailed or DM'd the show, or you've just heard me talk about her giant contribution to 10 Things To Tell You, my book launches, and all other behind-the-scenes operations around here: Caroline! In this episode about the serendipity of friendship, Caroline tells us the story of her longtime friend Judi. After Judi experiences a tragic loss, Caroline was there for her when she needed it most. This is a story about the gift of friendship and how friends help us navigate life's ups and downs. Throughout the course of this conversation Caroline also shares about her twin sister, Jill, which is a friendship story in and of itself.  Caroline's multiple friendship experiences were the perfect ones to cap off this Friendship Stories series because I think it highlights the width and breadth of good friendship and its importance in our lives. This episode concludes the Friendship Stories series, which I loved putting together as part of my research and then launch of my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs. Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.  Carol and Gloria's friendship spans a few cultural differences, including race (Carol is Asian and Gloria is Black) and a large age gap (they have twenty years between them). In this episode, Carol speaks candidly about how these differences affects their friendship and bring both challenges but also beautiful gifts.  This conversation is also one about the importance of openness and vulnerability in friendship. I do want to say that as a white woman hosting this conversation, my job here was to listen to their lived experiences that are so different from my own. Carol and Gloria listened to this episode after we recorded it to make sure that their perspectives were represented.  Carol and Gloria's friendship definitely qualifies as unique and I think you'll enjoy hearing about it. Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.  Over the last few months, we've heard a number of uplifting stories about unique and transformative friendships in this series. But today's episode is about an aspect of friendship that is painful and rarely discussed: the friendship break up. My guest, JeriLynne, shares that when her marriage ended, there was collateral damage in the form of friendship loss as well. That friendship breakup left her without real closure and she continues to struggle to be vulnerable in friendships. While it's certainly easier to talk about all the positive aspects of friendship, I think it's also important to discuss these harder, more painful parts of these formative relationships. JeriLynne's experience is significant and unfortunately a very real part of these friendship. I write about friendship breakups and friendship loss in The Life Council in a chapter called The Empty Chair.   BUY THE LIFE COUNCIL NOW   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! In my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about how the "old friend" doesn't necessarily mean than you've known one another for decades. All that is required to hold that Life Council seat is to have a friend who has known you from one version of yourself into another. That actual timeline might vary.  But Shauna Niequist is one of my oldest friends however you measure it. We met in the late 90's working at summer camp, where (as I wrote about in my first book Share Your Stuff), I learned from Shauna a different way to walk in the world than I had previously been exposed to.  For twenty-five years, Shauna has been a friend, role model, mentor, and, yes, even a fellow obsessive as we discuss in this episode.  Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their two sons.  To listen to the full reading tangent Shauna and I take in this conversation, you'll have to join my Secret Stuff community.  LEARN MORE ABOUT SECRET STUFF You can learn more about Shauna here Follow Shauna on IG Follow Shauna on FB Subscribe to Shauna's Substack Reading & Eating   FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   MENTIONED: Episode 112: Who was there? Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series. The childhood that my guest Kammy is going to describe in this conversation is unlike any I've ever heard. She grew up on a remote island just two square miles in size, without much contact with the rest of the world. Looking back, Kammy can see that the friendships from this time in her life shaped her relationships to come, and the bond she shares with other children from the island is unrivaled.  This is a fascinating conversation so different from the rest of our Friendship Stories.  * The Friendship Stories series came from the dozens of interviews I conducted while writing my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs. In the framework of my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, the duo behind the Pantsuit Politics podcast could be considered Business Besties or Old Friends, but I see them primarily as BATTLE BUDDIES. Beth Silvers and Sarah Stewart Holland have spent nearly ten years publicly discussing the American political landscape on the podcast Pantsuit Politics, and, well, you can imagine why I see them as having walked through a battle together.  Somehow, though, these two women have navigated these conversations with integrity, grace, and - especially - nuance.  I've been a fan of Beth & Sarah for years now, and respect their work so much. It was honor to have them on the show to talk about their friendship and partnership.    FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   Listen to Pantsuit Politics Follow Pantsuit Politics on IG Follow Beth on IG Follow Sarah on IG Buy their book I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening) Buy their book Now What?   MENTIONED in this episode: The Pantsuit Politics Premium Episodes on Patreon   SPONSORS: LUME // Go to LumeDeodorant.com and use code YOU for 40% your starter pack ZocDoc // Go to Zocdoc.com/YOU to download the Zocdoc app for free   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! My second book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs comes out in just two weeks, and so I have writing on my mind.  PREORDER THE LIFE COUNCIL NOW Becoming an author has been my life's biggest dream since I was in elementary school, but I was in my 40's and had been writing professionally for over a decade before it finally happened. And, truthfully, my first two books are not what I ever pictured myself writing!  I created this episode because I really wish someone had broken down the process of writing a book for me years ago. And because I think a lot of people want to write a book, but have no idea where to start.  Although the 10 steps I walk through here follow my own process of writing nonfiction, a lot of what I'm sharing here could apply to any sort of creative endeavor. I'm talking about preparation, mindset, rituals, and radical honesty.  How To Write A Book (in 10 Steps): Be honest about the WHY (and if a book is the best format to tell your story) Decide what you're really trying to say Outline, outline, outline Give yourself a deadline Find your rituals Measure something Write for yourself, rewrite for your audience Use an editor and don't take the edits personally Let the book become what it's supposed to be Call it done   MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Ep 73: I wrote a book!
