Host Diana Korte speaks with writer Lisa See who has published 13 books. Her newest title, DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON, is the story of three Chinese women immigrants. As the book begins, it's 1870 when these Chinese women arrive in the small, dusty, and violent part of Los Angeles. Each woman has her own desires. Dove wants to love and be loved, Petal desires freedom, and Moon seeks justice. Together they face a larger society that wishes them not one ounce of good will. Anti-Chinese sentiment is strong in Los Angeles, and this eventually leads to the Night of Horrors during which all three women are challenged in ways they could not have imagined. Their unexpected friendship helps them survive and, despite the odds, thrive, in the turmoil of post-Civil War Los Angeles.

This new one is set in1870 when three Chinese women arrive separately in the tiny settlement of Los Angeles where they build new lives amidst racism and hardship. Lisa See joins Carol Fitzgerald to discuss her new novel, DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. This time, Lisa explores the idea of female friendship as told by three different Chinese women — Moon, Dove and Petal — who were inspired by real people. The book is rooted in the 1871 Chinese Massacre in Los Angeles, which has been largely erased from public memory and not taught in history classes. Lisa first explored the massacre over 30 years ago while researching ON GOLD MOUNTAIN, where it appeared in a single paragraph. She was later invited by the mayor to serve on an advisory board for a memorial commemorating what became known as the "Night of Horrors." The novel grew from both deep personal family history and a sense of compulsion to recover a deliberately suppressed historical event. Lens on Gaza: The Sun and Moon Still Rise is a photography exhibition at East Street Arts, in Leeds UK. It presents an intimate visual narrative of life, resilience, and humanity in Gaza, through photographer Fadi A. Thabet's own lived experience and work within the city.The exhibition will be open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (12 – 4pm) & Saturday and Sunday (12 – 4pm) until May 9th 2026. Through art education and creative expression, he supports young people living in camps, helping them process trauma and rebuild a sense of hope and agency.Shazia Bibi is a cultural producer exploring narratives of identity, belonging, and social justice that transcend borders.East Street Arts supports artists to explore, connect, and challenge artists to be catalysts of change through art. Today, on the eve of the total lunar eclipse of the sun, the media is full of practical guides about how to tilt our heads at this once-in-a-lifetime celestial event. But what about the metaphysical questions about the eclipse? What should it mean to us humans, both in terms of our existence on earth and to our planet's uncertain future? According to cosmological poet Christopher Cokinos, author of the new STILL AS BRIGHT: An Illuminating History of the Moon from Antiquity to Tomorrow, the eclipse should make us humble. It's a sneak preview, Cokinos reminds us, of the inevitable fate of the earth when, in a billion years, the sun will be extinguished. And, he reminds us, it should also be a reminder of our ever-so-small place alongside other species in the vastness of universe. Christopher Cokinos is the author of three books of literary nonfiction: Hope Is the Thing with Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds (Tarcher/Penguin 2000); The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars (Tarcher/Penguin 2009); and Bodies, of the Holocene (Truman 2013). In 2016, the University of Arizona Press published his co-edited anthology (with Eric Magrane) The Sonoran Desert: A Literary Field Guide, which won a Southwest Book of the Year Award. The poet Gabriel Gudding selected his collection The Underneath as winner of a New American Press Poetry Prize, and it appeared in 2019. With Julie Swarstad Johnson, Cokinos co-edited Beyond Earth's Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight (Arizona, 2020), which was featured on Planetary Radio, PBS's “The Open Mind” and in Scientific American. He's also the author of a poetry chapbook, Held as Earth (Finishing Line). Now that Jenna has woken up, Elena explains to her that she's in transition and Jenna realizes that she's the vampire Klaus plans to sacrifice with the doppelgänger. With the sacrifice underway, Bonnie and Jeremy spend most of the night looking for a way to keep Elena human and end up binding Uncle John's life force to Elena's. Meanwhile, Stefan finally asks the question we've all been wondering: can Elijah really kill his brother? Elijah tells Stefan more Originals lore and reveals he wants revenge because Klaus threw all of his daggered siblings to sea. That's good enough for Stefan, so the plan is on. As planned, Bonnie arrives right as Klaus becomes a true hybrid and starts a spell to weaken him just enough for Elijah to kill him. And just as Elijah gets his hand around Klaus's heart, Klaus promises to reunite him with their siblings if Elijah doesn't kill him. Bonnie and Stefan plead with him to go through with the plan, but Elijah chooses family above all else and leaves with Klaus. Elder Eric and Abimbola Daramola demonstrated to us the importance of knowing our identity and knowing who God is to us. Through the life of Joshua, we learned that through failures and mistakes, Joshua took hold of his identity. He knew what God said about him and he knew who God was to him. Joshua was a man who possessed Sophron. He possessed a saved mind and kept in mind that which saved him and the whole situation at all times. This is absolutely essential, for all believers to possess Sophron. To have a saved mind and to keep in mind that which saves you and the whole situation at all times. This is a message that you will want to listen to multiple times. Let your faith rise as you demonstrate action-oriented faith to save the situation in front of you. It will result in heaven responding with signs and wonders because of the manifest presence of God inside of you.

One of the most brilliant men of science in the ancient world, Eratosthenes was best known as a scholar and librarian in his day, But he made his greatest contribution to science in the realms of geometry and astronomy fueled by his curiosity, ingenuity and reason. From his home in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, he used a chance reading from a book at the library of Alexandria to devise a method of determining the shape and size of the earth.
