We start by exploring BioWare's strategic pivot, as they confirm no DLC plans for the recently released Dragon Age: The Veilguard, focusing instead on the eagerly awaited Mass Effect 5. The series might delve into rich segments like the First Contact War or the political intricacies of the Citadel. We'll address the challenges Amazon faces in bringing the detailed world of Mass Effect to life, from ensuring accurate alien species representation to maintaining the storytelling depth fans expect. Given Amazon's track record with hits like Fallout, which garnered 16 Emmy nominations and 100 million views, there's a palpable optimism for this project. My guest today is a is a Canadian American actor for video games, television and film. Born in Labrador in Canada, she soon moved to Alabama in the United States, where, as a teenager, she began working as a commercial voice over artist for radio. After graduating from Alabama School of Fine Arts, she took on voice roles to fund her dream of becoming a musician. Soon, however, the acting took over. After securing some roles in regional TV series, she moved to Los Angeles. There, a part in the cartoon ‘Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?' brought her into the world of video games, where she quickly became one of the world's most sought-after performers. In 2011 the New Yorker described her as “a kind of Meryl Streep of the form.” Her roles, which number more than a hundred, include that of Samus Aran in the Metroid Prime Trilogy, Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear Solid, Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect games, and the character Ashe in Overwatch. Over the course of their career, Commander Shepard is forced to bear the burden of multiple costly and impactful decisions, on top of the already stressful position of being responsible for an entire ship and its crew. This is an EXPERT level episode, which means some parts of the discussion may not make sense unless you've played the game. Pop on your jetpack and brush off your Angaran dictionary, Kiaran and Adam have taken a one-way trip to the Andromeda galaxy in the largely criticised sequel of the Mass Effect trilogy. We talk about our history with the franchise, our impressions of the characters, Turian tongues, krogan genitalia, and much much more. But most importantly: is it really THAT bad?
On this episode of the podcast we discuss the latest from the Epic vs Apple lawsuit, Ubisoft potentially moving more to free to play games, the past weeks Playstation news, as well as the return of Commander Shepard and the Normandy with the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite episode on the Citadel. The Mass Effect universe is notoriously horny. This dating sim masquerading as a first person shooter offers all the juicy aliens you could ask for. The fuckability of these characters is undeniable, but we won't rest until we scientifically prove it. Who is the median of fuckability in this veritable buffet? We sit down and rank 21 of the most iconic Mass Effect characters to get an answer. Hop in the Mako as we crash headlong into every kind of fuck this universe has to offer and explore the landscape of our own hearts and boners along the way.
This is The Oblivion Bar Podcast, The #1 Podcast on The Citadel and The Official Podcast of The Fantasy Shop in St. Charles, MO! For episode 53, Chris and Aaron discuss the first HAWKEYE Disney+ series trailer, our first look at Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film NIGHTMARE ALLEY, and Anthony Mackie is set to star in the live-action TWISTED METAL series. For our main topic, we sit down with BY FAR the MOST prolific voice actor of all-time, Jennifer Hale! Her incredible filmography includes Naomi Hunter from the Metal Gear Solid franchise, Rosalind Lutece from the BioShock Infinite, Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Bastila Shan from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game series, Kiara from Rick and Morty, (Giganta, Killer Frost, Zatanna, and Inza) in the Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited animated series, and of course: Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect franchise! Welcome to Massively Affected, where I, Josh Silverman, bring on a guest and ask them the not-so-simple question: Why Mass Effect? This week I'm joined by Kenneth Shepard, who you may know as a Staff Writer for Fanbyte, and the co-host of NormandyFM. On this week's episode, Kenneth and I discussed agency in the Mass Effect universe, among many other topics. In exploring Commander Shepard's journey, players are often put in situations where they're guessing at what Shepard will say based on snippets of dialogue. These don't always relate to the exact circumstances of what will be said, leading to a bit of occasional cognitive dissonance between what players intended, versus what actually happened. In this episode we looked at how the ending to Mass Effect 3 gave the only true agency to Commander Shepard, as through no spoken dialogue Shepard was finally able to do exactly what the player wished. At least within the confines of the game's planned out story. If you enjoyed my conversation with Kenneth Shepard, make sure to give him a follow on Twitter. Make sure you come later this week, as I'll be joined by Eric Van Allen of NormandyFM. If this is your first episode, make sure to check out the full backlog of episodes found on But Why Tho.
Welcome to Massively Affected, where I, Josh Silverman, bring on a guest and ask them the not-so-simple question: Why Mass Effect? This week I'm joined by Kelsie Mhoon, who you may know as a Narrative and Content Designer for Jam City, and on Death Carnival. On this week's episode, we talked about the most important part of the _Mass Effect _series: the companions. The journey we take with our companions defines our experience across the Milky Way and Andromeda, shaping not just who our Commander Shepard and Ryder become, but their actions across the universe. The missions may sometimes be memorable, but the moments we have had with Thane's debut entrance, Legion saving Shepard about the Reaper vessel, or Tali's first time seeing her homeworld are what set in stone the wonderous galaxy sandbox that we get to play in. The companions are what offer the replayability of BioWare's classic franchises, and offer players the building blocks to create their own narratives. If you enjoyed my conversation with Kelsie Mhoon, make sure to give her a follow on Twitter. Make sure you come back next week as I'll be chatting with both Kenneth Shepard and Eric Van Allen of NormandyFM. (There will be two episodes next week, to be clear.) If this is your first episode, make sure to check out the full backlog of episodes found on But Why Tho. As always, my thanks to Adam Leonhardt for his brilliant work making the Massively Affected logo, Julian Villarreal for his beautifully composed theme song for the show, and Mark B. Donica for helping me out by editing the back two-thirds of this season!
It's been nearly a decade since the original Mass Effect Trilogy ended, and now veterans and new players alike are experiencing the story of Commander Shepard and the Reapers. In this episode, we discuss what it's like to go back to a series after so long, how distance can add a new perspective to your understanding of a game, and how the controversial ending to Mass Effect 3 comes off today. In our side quests, we discuss Ubisoft's acknowledgement of politics in Far Cry 6, how developers try to recreate games as they were years ago, and the extent to which our mode of engagement changes based on how many games we play at a single time. An intellectual once said, "To err is human, to complain for a really long time about movies that tried and failed to capture the nature of the games from which they drew inspiration is the height of entertainment." Who was that shining light, whose voice seemingly sprung from the well of unnecessary verbosity and pointless metaphors? The world may never know. While that quote may never find proper attribution, you can take a break from fancy turns of phrase and enjoy two friends talking about bad video game movies. In preparation for this episode, Zak and Aaron watched "Super Mario Bros.," "Resident Evil," and "Monster Hunter." One of them was pretty good. One of them was so unhinged that enjoyment wasn't even an option — it was always going to happen. The other one occupied the majority of the conversation. It's up to you to figure out which is which. They also talk about Mass Effect for a while, and Aaron said that his second least-favorite Star Wars Movie was "The Last Jedi," when in fact, it's "The Rise of Skywalker." In our mini-episode this week we are doing our best to cast Mass Effect, and it was difficult! I think it's pretty easy to tell that we are out of the cultural zeitgeist, but we had fun, so that's what matters. This is our second mini-episode, but our longer reviews aren't going anywhere, and we'll be back with a look at Disco Elysium soon. Thanks for listening! Time Stamps:00:14 Introduction21:08 What we're playing next (Disco Elysium)From the show:It looks like Commander Shepard is probably 28-29 at the beginning of Mass Effect. And Garrus appears to be a few years younger than Shepard at the beginning of the series (though maybe they end up roughly the same age after the events of Mass Effect 2). Welcome to Massively Affected, where I, Josh Silverman, bring on a guest and ask them the not-so-simple question: Why Mass Effect? On this week's show I'm joined by Aiden Swank, Senior Partnerships for ShotCall, tabletop enthusiast, and someone who is at least vaguely interested in the world of Mass Effect. Aiden has long been a friend of my podcasting endeavors, but is someone who I previously had not discussed the Mass Effect _series with. On this episode we discussed Aiden's legacy with the series, and explore the ideas of binary choices and what it's like to play a truly pragmatic Commander Shepard. There's also plenty of discussions regarding the viability of a _Mass Effect D&D campaign, and the series history alongside Dragon Age. If you enjoyed my conversation with Aiden Swank, make sure to give him a follow on Twitter: @LordCuddleBear. Make sure you come back next week, as I'll be chatting with Trevor Starkey, founder of That Nerdy Site.
