Jenny Simpson Interview

Running--State of the Sport

This week, George Hirsch and Amby Burfoot talk with Jenny Simpson, miler turned marathoner--well, almost, as Simpson hasn't finished a marathon yet. But she'll be toeing the start line in Hopkinton on April 15, and she sounds absolutely determined to make it to the Copley-Square finish line.  Simpson explains in this conversation that she never intended for the Olympic Marathon Trials in February to be her first marathon start, but life had other ideas, so that's how things developed. She dropped out of the Trials at about 18 miles, and now thinks she overtrained and overstressed about the 26.2-mile distance. For a decade, Simpson had been the best USA 1500 meter/miler. She excelled at the global level, winning an Olympic bronze along with a gold and two silvers at the World Championships. She also won the Fifth Ave Mile 8 times. Even during her track career, Simpson explains, she did a long run almost every weekend. She also attended many marathons with her husband, Jason, a 2:18 runner, and found herself inspired by the tens of thousands of amateur runners who challenged themselves with the marathon distance.  Before speaking with Jenny, George and Amby discussed the biggest recent running news. Amby got a chuckle over his Google News aggregator, which brought him an April Fool's Day story from LetsRun.com. It claimed that Taylor Switft was now dating shot put great, Ryan Crouser, all 6' '7" and 320 pound of him. Take that Travis Kelce! But Amby turned serious when noting that the BAA/Boston Marathon was putting out press releases listing "5 Reasons for a Clear Course" while a Black running club rejoindered with "5 Reasons for a Cheer Course." Last year there was tension at the Marathon's 21st mile when club members allegedly ran onto the course. George was impressed by the always strong performances at the World Cross-Country Championships. This year in Serbia, the Kenyan senior women swept the top 5 places--an unprecedented team achievement. Individual champions Beatrice Chebet (Kenya) and Jacob Kiplimo (Uganda) repeated their victories of 2 years ago. The next World Cross meet will be held in January, 2026, in Tallahassee, FL. Reviewing their conversation with Simpson, Amby said that he appreciated her conviction that a woman athlete could be both a fierce competitor and a good sport at the same time. George liked her fearlessness in stepping up from the mile to the marathon. You can keep up with Jenny Simpson by following her on Instagram. 200th Episode Celebration! 5 Ways Our Approach Has Changed, Strength Work Evolution, Post-Race Recovery, and World XC!

Some Work, All Play

It's the 200th episode, and we brought so much gratitude to the party! The main topic was reflecting on 5 ways our approach to endurance training/coaching has changed, based on new research and real-world experience. The topics buffet is packed with goodness: extreme-carb fueling during hard efforts, heavier strength work (in moderation), less need for high mileage (but more cross-training), increased steady running, and more double workouts/big threshold sessions. Even more important than the exact changes is the "why" that motivates them, combining research and theory, mixed with a heaping helping of feedback from listeners. It's so much fun to learn from some of the smartest people in endurance sports! And this episode wouldn't be a true celebration unless we filled it up with tons of topics. Other topics: how to improve post-race recovery, why the time after big efforts is a major opportunity for growth (or regression), Allie Ostrander's inspiring journey, the World Cross-Country Championships, giving notice to the achievements of others, how 200 episodes of the podcast has given us more courage, road shoes in trail races, the return of Adam Peterman, a new review study on caffeine, why character matters, why progressive overload is overrated, a listener question on leaving your job, and hot takes. It's been a remarkable comeback for cross country runner Annika Pfitzinger. Next month, the 31-year-old will compete as part of the New Zealand team at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. A huge feat considering where she was six years ago - confined to the couch, suffering from crippling headaches and inexplicable exhaustion. The mysterious illness was all the more confusing, given she had just secured a personal best over 10km - 34.33. Months of testing finally led to a diagnosis of chronic fatigue - recovery would be years away, if at all. The daughter of Olympic runners Christine (nee Hughes) and Peter Pfitzinger, Annika says working on her mental health and letting go of her running dreams, was key to her comeback. But the road to recovery is far from linear.

It was great to meet and listen to the story, so far, of Angie. from a background as a runner, who reached the elite level at cross country and long distance, laid the foundation for what has been a diverse sporting journey.Angie states "I come from a running background. Between 1996 and 2000 I ran internationally as a distance runner. Representing England in the Commonwealth Games 1998 in Kuala Lumpur. The World Half Marathon Championships in 1997 and the World Cross Country Championships where we won a team bronze medal. I was sponsored by puma for 5 years at that time and ranked 8th in the Commonwealth over 10,000m with a time of 33.20.I had my family and got into triathlons at around 40. I have never really trained to optimum for duathlons as I have always relied on being a PT for fitness. However, they are getting super competitive and if I want to get in the medals I need to do some proper and structured training. I have had 2 silver medals in the middle distance duathlons at Worlds. I got double bronze medals in the sprint and standard distances 4 years ago. I also got a silver getting exactly the same time as Cathy Dawson to 100th of a second. What a race that was. I have also bagged another bronze at standard distance 2 years ago. The last couple of races 4th and 6th. I have a year between now and the Worlds in Australia so time to put the training in ready.I compete in powerlifting too. I am the World Champion in single lifts and full power and I hold the world record in my category for deadlift (full power) European records for squat in full power. Now she's also been named to her eighth national team and will run the 5K at the World Road Racing Championships in Latvia. While I invited Julie-Anne to the show to talk about Budapest, our conversation veered more retrospectively.  Julie-Anne spoke about how she is being thoughtful and deliberate in looking at her decade-long commitment to high-level running and what she wants in the future.
