Today on the Run Culture Podcast, I chatted to one of the most ‘well read, knowledgeable and innovative' coaching minds in current day distance running; Brad Hudson. The interview was quite high level, it covered a lot of territory and did bounce around a fair bit, many times I didn't know what direction it was going to go which made it fun. Since starting the Run Culture podcast some 5yrs ago, I've had some interviews I've really cherished and this one ranks right up there as one of my favorites, I had a blast trying to keep up with this running genius. Brad is a well-known running coach (who's currently living in LA, USA) and was a former elite (2:13 marathoner) distance runner himself. He is recognized for coaching many top-level athletes, including; Dathan Ritzenhein, Shayne Culpepper, Jason Hartman, Parker Stinson, Benita Johnson, Allie Kieffer, Jorge Torres, amongst many others…. There were many take home messages, including: - How Modern elite training has changed in 2024? - Why we should all be 'Experimenting, Innovating and Evolving' our training? - Some of Brad's key Endurance Training principles. - The importance of customized and responsive training plans. - The Importance of Sleep, Psychology, Nutrition, Stress management. - His many coaching influences (too many to list, he's a lifelong learner and learns from anyone if he feels it could be useful). Some mentioned, include; Mark Wetmore, Bill Dellinger, Renate Canova, Arthur Lydiard, Percy Cerutty, Antonio Cabral, Jack Daniels, Nick Bideau and Pat Clohessy. - And many other pearls of coaching wisdom, including his two book recommendations- Ryan Holliday's ‘Daily Stoic' and Marc Bubb's book; ‘Peak: The New Science of Athletic Performance That is Revolutionizing Sports' If anyone wanted to reach out to Brad for ‘Online Running Coaching' Brad's email is: hudsoncoachingmarathon@yahoo.com Thanks once again Brad, you were a joy to listen to and have certainly got me excited about my own coaching!

“We're kind of on this journey to the marathon. The next logical step is a half marathon. That will be in the new year. We don't know exactly where yet but we want to go attack a half marathon. That's what all the training is focused on and that's why it's been so fun. Not that the training is easy but it's the training that comes the most naturally to me.” My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian Joe Klecker of the On Athletics Club. He joins us with some news that he's gearing up for his half marathon debut in early 2025 after a challenging comeback from injury. Joe is back and looking to tackle a new distance with a keen eye on Ryan Hall's American record in the half marathon. While his 2024 outdoor season was sidelined by a torn abductor, he's now fully focused on the 13.1 mile distance. He doesn't say it, but I think all signs point that it will likely be at the Houston Half Marathon in January, which is traditionally perfect weather and very fast. And while he's not quite ready to step away from the track just yet, Joe is already embracing the marathon mindset and this is one step forward to getting to the full distance with a personal best of 12:54 for 5K and 27:07 for 10K. Joe's incredible speed and dedication are setting him up for a strong entry into the longer distance. So in this episode, we'll hear about his approach to injury recovery, his plans for that debut, all with the guidance of his coach Dathan Ritzenhein and the support of his training partner and Olympic medalist, Hellen Obiri. He also shares why he's hoping for one more team on the track. In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Conner Mantz, a favorite in the Feb. 3 Olympic Marathon Trials, based on his recent 2:07:47 at the Chicago Marathon. Mantz also won two NCAA Cross Country Championships in his days as an undergrad at Brigham Young University. He's part of a strong BYU marathon contingent that includes Clayton Young, 2:08:00 at Chicago, and 2016 Olympic marathon runner Jared Ward. All are coached by two-time U.S. Olympic marathoner Ed Eyestone. Before talking to Mantz, George and Amby discussed the biggest recent news in running. This included the fast results in the Valencia Marathon, where Ethiopian Sisay Lemma set a course record of 2:01:48, and his countrywoman Worknesh Degefa ran a personal best, 2:15:51. In the same race, Kenenisa Bekele, 41, set a world record for a masters marathon runner with his 2:04:19. In Oregon, Addy Ritzenhein, just a sophomore and daughter of former U.S. super-elite runner Dathan Ritzenhein, won the Nike Nationals XC meet. In England, Lauren Fleshman's book Good For A Girl was named winner of the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of the Year. It was the first win for a running book, and the first win for a female author writing about female sports. "I try to divert a lot of the attention from me towards the team because it really is a lot bigger than just me and my performances. I have a lot of supportive teammates and great staff at Harvard – so that's one thing I try to do. The other thing is just to stay in the moment with the guys. In the end, I'm a part of this team and that's the most important thing. I don't really want to isolate myself as an individual on the squad. We are the squad. We refer to ourselves as 'the hive mind'. I think we even said that on the line at NCAAs – three, two, one, hive mind.” Harvard's Graham Blanks just won the NCAA Cross Country men's individual title and became the first man from the Ivy League to do so. Blanks completed a perfect 5–0 season that included wins at the Battle in Beantown, Nuttycombe Invitational, Ivy League Championships and the NCAA Division I Northeast Region Cross Country Championships before Saturday's victory. At 21 years old, he is also the youngest person to win the NCAA Cross Country Championships since Dathan Ritzenhein in 2003. The future is bright and now he turns his attention to the indoor track season as early as next weekend in Boston. He already owns personal bests of 7:44.76 for 3000m and 13:18.45 for 5000m. And just two months into 2023, the unstoppable streak continues: Alicia just broke the indoor 3000m American Record at the Millrose Games in New York City. Alicia lives and trains in Boulder, CO, where she is coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. In this conversation, she talks about training with OAC, about the team culture, and about why seemingly every member of the team is killing it right now. She also talks about how she has learned to stay focused, stay relaxed, and stay energized during races and hard workouts. (Check out this video for a perfect example.) And if you've ever thought you can't relate to the pros, rest assured, Alicia is one of us: Her on-the-run music of choice is The Greatest Showman soundtrack. "I think she has the talent to be the best in the world in the marathon – just like she's been the best in the world in track and cross-country as well." Last week, Mac Fleet and I traveled to Boulder, Colo. to spend some time with the On Athletics Club and coach Dathan Ritzenhein. We got a chance to sit down and chat about the highs and lows of OAC's 2022 outdoor season + Hellen Obiri's upcoming marathon debut in New York City on Nov. 6. Obiri's move to Boulder has been in the works since she signed with the Swiss sportswear company in January with the intention of focusing on the roads. Ritzenhein worked closely with her agent and former coach Ricky Simms to make the transition as smooth as possible following her 67:05 victory at The Great North Run in September. We also spoke with Obiri about her fall plans a day before she won a silver medal in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. You can watch this full interview with Ritzenhein uninterrupted on the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel. After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Gil Winch decided that he wanted to run a half marathon and make the biggest social impact that he could. That was over 20 years ago. Today he equates running with “beating cancer and staying alive” and is the founder of CY, a for-profit business that employs people with disabilities and other marginalized populations. He wrote his forthcoming book, “Winning with Underdogs,” to share what he's learned about building a more inclusive workplace. While I'm Eugene with On Running I had the chance to sit down with the legendary distance runner, now coach of OAC, Dathan Ritzenhein! Dathan competed at several Olympic competitions over his career and is now working with some of the best athletes in the country to help them achieve the same on the On Athletic Club (OAC). In this episode, we talked about: * How he uses his experience, both good and bad, as apart of his coaching style * Working with On to build the team and their shoe line up my favorite * Joe Klecker's performance at Worlds and his progress in the sport * My favorite part…how to work passed failure! He mentioned Ollie Hoare as the example and some of the words of encouragement and inspiration he shared with him after a very upsetting day at the track in Eugene! Thank you On for sponsoring this episode!! Born in the Swiss Alps, On running shoes feature the first patented cushioning system which is activated only when you need it - during the landing. https://www.on-running.com › en-usOn Running Check them out. "After coming off of cross country and finishing second the year before, we were all really amped about having a team that could really win if we got it right. Obviously, it didn't turn out that way, especially for me. I had a terrible race at Nationals. It was still about going out there and going for that. Giving everything I had to my team is super important to me. That's what I also like about On. They're as team-oriented as a pro group can be. I really appreciated that and that will definitely help me in this next stage to have that team vibe but still be bought into something." Yared Nuguse just wrapped up his career at the University of Notre Dame, where he was an All-American and two-time NCAA champion with the 1500m outdoors and indoor DMR in 2019. He also held the NCAA record in the 1500m with a 3:34.68, which stood until it was broken this spring. He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 1500m after finishing third at the Olympic Trials. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from the Games in Tokyo due to a quad injury that he sustained while in Japan. So what's next? He's here with the news that he has signed with On Running and joining the On Athletics Club to work under coach Dathan Ritzenhein. Hear more about the move, what went wrong this past year but why things have turned and are now going right heading into the U.S. Championships, where he will be contesting the 1500 meters. He ran 3:51 for the mile and 3:50 for the mile on the roads. He ran 13:22 for the 5K outdoors and then just ran 13:09 this past weekend in Boston. He finished 11th in the Olympic 1,500 meter final. Ollie's time as a Badgers saw the Sydneysider win the 2018 NCAA 1500m title, including eight All-American finishes indoors and outdoors. In 2016, Noah Droddy finished dead last in the US 10K Track Trials as an unsponsored athlete who was relatively new to the pro ranks. In 2021, Noah Droddy is now the 9th fastest US marathoner of all-time, and to the surprise of many, is again unsponsored. On the US top 10 list, he's listed with big names like Ryan Hall, Dathan Ritzenhein, and Meb Keflezighi, and yet Noah works full-time at SOS Hydration to make ends meet amidst a professional running world that doesn't always make sense. Sponsored or not, he seems happy, and he's ready to continue chasing his dreams on the road at the NYC Marathon on November 7th. Sponsored or not, Noah is also unabashedly himself and not afraid to tell it like it is. In this episode, he shares all about his journey from underdog runner in high school in Indiana and at Depauw University to one of the very fastest American marathoners of all-time. He speaks truth about the ups and downs in his story and then isn't afraid to name names on the topics of doping and clean sport. (Yes, he went there.) We are big fans of Noah and know you will be too. He tells us that he has a big announcement coming on November 4th, and we hope that means a new sponsor sees what we see too!
"I want to be top American at a World Marathon Major. I want to take that step forward. It's taken me a lot longer to get to that point. That's just how it goes sometimes with surgeries, setbacks and there not being that many opportunities...Boston is hard though." Welcome back to the podcast, Parker Stinson. The last time he was on this show, he was getting ready to run the 2018 Chicago Marathon and still had a bit of work to prove himself as a pro runner on the roads following his successful career at the University of Oregon. After a coaching switch from Brad Hudson to Dathan Ritzenhein, Parker seemed to find a bit of that spark that he needed and had a strong 2019 campaign that included running a 25K American record of 1:13:48 and then a 2:10.:53 marathon in Chicago that fall. Unfortunately, he had to scratch from the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials due to an injury - which he'll talk about in this episode and then underwent knee surgery in 2020. The road back hasn't been easy but Parker peels back the curtain on that process and why he's ready to give it a go at the Boston Marathon. Is a possible rivalry brewing with Scott Fauble? Parker will be one of the elite athletes at the Endorphin Pro+ showcase, which will be a 10K in Germany that will be streamed live on the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel with me and Kyle Merber on the mic.
“Now that I've been running for over a decade, I could just keep adding things and adding things. And by the end of the day, I would be training 24/7, adding all these new exercises. And I do gain a lot of confidence from doing these things, but then I like to assess what's actually helping me." We're joined by Joe Klecker, 2021 U.S. Olympian in the 10,000 meters.Joe has an amazing story and it was so fun exploring his journey to making the 2021 Olympic team. One of the things that stands out about Joe's story is how both his mother and father were world class runners back in their day. In fact, Joe's mother was an Olympic runner as well! Joe displays so much perspective on making his first Olympic team four years earlier than he originally expected. He said something we all can benefit from when he spoke about competing at his first Olympics: this first big experience is a stepping stone towards more big moments. It's easy to get overwhelmed and forget that we're all on a journey and that every moment, no matter how big, is still a moment to learn and to grow for future opportunities. Joe may only be 24 years old but he shares a lot of wisdom throughout our conversation.Timestamped Show Notes(3:25) Continuing an Olympic legacy…(5:43) A couple of tricks that worked for Jon…(7:16) Key advice to make the 10,000-meter team…(11:12) Making all the right decisions in the last portion of the race…(14:31) “I got a lot of confidence in where I ran my 10k PR, the conditions were a bit warm and I knew that I was well in shape to run the standard.”(16:32) The power of a Coach's belief…(18:37) “You're not just running as hard as you can to hit that pace. Kevin interviews On Running's Dathan Ritzenhein after his team qualified three Olympians, Joe Klecker (10k), Alicia Monson (10k) and Oliver Hoare (1500). Notably a fourth Olympian Morgan McDonald (5k) has recently joined the team as well.
Fresh off his 3rd place finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials 10k, Joe Klecker joins hosts Chris Chavez, Kyle Merber and Nick Willis for a conversation about his race and the training that got him there. After graduating from Colorado University, the 7x All-American remained in Boulder to be coached by fellow Buff legend, Dathan Ritzenhein. Since then he has achieved personal bests in ten straight races and a berth to Tokyo in the eleventh. The vision for the On Athletics Club was created and built around Klecker. In its first year as a professional club, the new group has burst onto the scene and solidified its presence — first domestically and now on the world stage. This is an episode bursting with genuine questions of curiosity as Joe shares workout details that took our breath away. But he closed hard to win the race in a PB (2:10:50), securing the Olympic standard, to clinch his second Olympic berth. This was Chris Thompson's marathon progression prior to winning today's British Olympic trials in 2:10:50. He still logged some solid times at shorter distances in that span (notably a 61:07 half last year), but today's run was quite a turnaround -- and the marathon of his life. Was curious when talk would turn to Thompson's footwear today (he was wearing blacked-out Vaporflys). Alan Webb, Ryan Hall, and Dathan Ritzenhein rose to prominence in the early 2000s as members of the high school class of 2001. For their accomplishments as teens -- which included two Foot Locker Cross Country titles for Ritzenhein and a 3:53 high school mile record for Webb -- they were christened the "Big 3." Ever since, their careers have been linked, with each going on to break American records as professionals -- Webb in the mile (3:46.91), Ritzenhein in the 5,000 meters (12:56.27, since broken), and Hall in the half marathon (59:43). Hall also is still the fastest American ever at the marathon (2:04:58) from 2011 Boston. Ritzenhein joined Webb and Hall in retirement earlier this month, marking the end of an era in American distance running. The Big 3 bridged the gap between the low point of American distance running in the 1990s and the success of the late 2000s and 2010s, where it has become common for Americans to bring home medals from global championships. Amazingly, until Ritzenhein's retirement, Ritz, Webb, and Hall had never before gathered for a three-way conversation. We thought we had generated an incredible idea for LetsRun -- until Hall revealed he had had the same idea for his own podcast, which was published Wednesday! But the three of them had such a good time talking that they agreed to gather on Zoom for a second interview with LetsRun this week. Find out why Ritz had Webb's face on his dartboard as a high schooler, how Webb was able to beat Ritzenhein in their famous 10k showdown in 2006, which performances each believes was the best from their careers, their biggest lessons from the sport, Webb and Ritz's thoughts on their time with the Nike Oregon Project and Alberto Salazar's ban, and much more. And when you're done, be sure to check out Hall's podcast - https://anchor.fm/runfree/episodes/Episode-40-The-Big-Three-come-together-for-a-first-ever-three-way-conversation--Dathan-Ritzenhein--Alan-Webb--and-myself-eeanvt where the Big 3 talk about their first encounters and what it was like racing each other as high schoolers. In this episode newly retired Dathan (former American record holder in 5,000 meters in 12:56), Alan (American Record holder in the mile in 3:46), and myself (American record holder in the half marathon in 59:43) remember the good ol' days of our high school class of 2001, in which we were dubbed "the big three" by a writer, forever linking our careers. We recall our first competitions against each other, how we inspired each other, the workout Alan crushed prior to running a national high school record in the mile (3:53...which still stands), how to push through pain, and speculated what it was that led to our respective breakthrough years.
Our normal podcast returned but this was far from a normal podcast as podcasting history was made as for the first time in world history a six-day-old baby appeared on a podcast. Sat down with Keith and Kevin Hanson while in Atlanta to discuss the history of the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project as it celebrates 20 years of advancing U.S. distance running. We start by going back to the brothers’ roots in Michigan and the state of the sport in America before helping improve it. The Hansons made an emphasis on group training, which stood out to them from studying Ethiopians, Kenyans and Japanese. It started off as a $250,000 investment in a team that helped provide housing, health insurance, travel and equipment for a few runners but later blossomed with a partnership with Brooks. In 2008, they put Brian Sell on the U.S. Olympic Marathon team. They also helped develop and guide Des Linden into a two-time Olympian and Boston Marathon champion. In this episode, they’ll share some of the behind-the-scenes stories of those breakout moments in their history. Also, what’s it like for them to take on the challenge of rebuilding the likes of Dathan Ritzenhein or bringing Natosha Rogers into an Olympic team contender for 2021. ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag | instagram.com/citiusmag | facebook.com/citiusmag ▶ Connect with Chris via Email: chris@citiusmag.com | twitter.com/ChrisChavez | instagram.com/chris_j_chavez

Over the past quarter century no program has more produced more cross country stars and national championship teams than the University of Colorado. Coach Mark Wetmore's charges included Adam Goucher, Dathan Ritzenhein, and Jenny Simpson. Last year Dani Jones won the women's XC individual title and 5k track championship. The latest to carry the torch for the buffaloes is PAC 12 champion and NCAA runner up Joe Klecker. Joe joined us for an interview last week and we discussed the national championship meet, running for the storied Buffs program, and his love for home state of Minnesota's Vikings, Twins, and Timberwolves.

When it comes to ambitious running challenges there aren't many greater than running across the United States. For Molly Cuevas, an All-American college field hockey player, this challenge was quite literally the beginning of her running career. Molly has been a high level athlete, first in soccer and later in field hockey, since she as little. But, she hadn't started running until she dreamed of running across the country to support others. Motivated by her belief in the Challenged Athletes Foundation, Molly trained for a year before starting her epic run. In this episode you can hear about what drove Molly, how she was able to persist, and all that goes into this challenge. You can learn more about Molly at https://milesbymolly.com. Margaret Spring has been a dedicated runner since she was kid chasing after her oldest brother. These days, people are busy trying to chase her. This remarkable woman picked up trail running five years ago. She fell head-over-heals for the sport while trying to make sure she didn't do that, literally, on the rocky and challenging downhills. A few weeks ago Margaret has a breakout performance by finishing third in her age group at the Leadville Marathon, sharing the podium with Kara Goucher. Running at an elite level is hard enough when everything goes right and luck is on your side. Very few people get to that level even in the best of circumstances. For Molly Bookmyer, her running career could never be described in those terms. She has undergone two brain surgeries, hospitalized after having a seizure on a treadmill, and helped nurse her husband back to health after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer a week after they returned from their honeymoon. In the face of all that, Molly has earned an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the marathon and placed third this spring in the U.S. 25k championships. “I went to the lead, even over Heartbreak, with a purpose and with the goal of dropping people and injecting pace—and I think that's maybe what surprised me the most, is that I was able to be an actual factor and be something that impacted the way the race played out, which is a new feeling for me in the marathon, particularly in World Marathon Majors. In New York, I was as far back as probably 20th pretty early in the race and was kind of doing my own thing, so that was the biggest surprise—being up front—and the way we got to the 2:09:09 here in Boston.” Stoked to welcome the morning shakeout's first-ever guest, Scott Fauble of Hoka Northern Arizona Elite, back to the show to talk about his recent seventh-place finish at the Boston Marathon, where he ran a big personal best of 2:09:09. We covered a lot of good stuff in this conversation: all things Boston, of course, but also training and recovery, what the next several months are going to look like heading into the 2020 Olympic Trials Marathon, his greatest strengths as a marathoner (and where he has the most room to grow), how he keeps himself centered and grounded, where his extraordinary ability to push himself in races comes from, what's exciting him in running right now, and a heck of a lot more. "Homelessness is a label, it is not who they are. It is a point in time, it is something they are struggling through, it is not something that should be used to put a label on them and define them as a human—and that's what we try to change on those morning runs. When you're running with one of our members, who may be suffering from homelessness at that point in time, it's just a human to human conversation." I had a great conversation for this week's episode of the podcast with Katy Sherratt, the CEO of Back on My Feet, an organization that uses running and community support to help combat homelessness and provide essential employment opportunities and housing resources for people who need it. We talked about Back on my Feet's origins, how the organization has grown since it launched in 2007, and where it's heading in the coming years. We discussed running as a universal language, the evolving role that running has had in Sherratt's life, how she first got involved with BoMF, and what she's learned during her tenure. Sherratt also explains how the program works, shares some member success stories, knocks down some of the biggest misconceptions people have about homelessness, and a lot more. Last year, Des Linden joined the CITIUS MAG Podcast just two days before she ended up winning the Boston Marathon. We decided to test our luck again and have another Hansons Brooks Distance Project runner on before Monday's race. Three-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein joins the podcast to discuss his approach to the race and how he's overcome a slew of injuries to make it to the starting line healthy. Dathan has not finished a marathon in four years. He finished seventh at the 2015 Boston Marathon and then DNF'ed at the U.S. Olympic Trials, ruptured his plantar at the 2016 NYC Marathon and pulled out of last year's Boston Marathon just 10 days before the race. He's working off an eight-week build up for this year's race, which should be interesting to see play out. We discuss his tiered goals for Monday, how he's changed his training, why Brooks took a risk on him, why he thinks he'll make the 2020 Olympic team and what he gets out of coaching... For a shorter conversation, I thought Dathan and I got deep. NOTE: We taped this at a sports bar in Boston after a Brooks press conference so apologies for the background noise.
The 2019 Boston Marathon is Monday and this week's podcast was recorded live in Boston just after we talked to the pros on Friday. On the women's side, Des Linden is back to defend and fit. Will Worknesh Degefa live up to her 2:17 in Dubai or wilt on the Boston hills? How will Jordan Hasay do in her return? The men's side should be a great battle between Geoffrey Kirui and Lelisa Desisa but Americans Shadrack Biwott, Jared Ward, Scott Fauble, and Dathan Ritzenhein are ready to mix it up. We break down Boston and then at the end discuss the positive biological passport violation of Patrick Sang coached athlete Cyrus Rutto. Ben True joins The CITIUS MAG Podcast with Chris Chavez to discuss his win at the 2018 United NYC Half. He takes us through how the race played out since I finished 33 minutes behind him and haven't been able to watch a replay yet. With his 62:39 winning time, Ben became the first American male open division winner in the event's history. He finished ahead of Dathan Ritzenhein and Chris Thompson on a chilly and windy morning in New York City. Ben immediately dismisses any marathon plans and talks but shares a quick story about how he's actually covered the marathon distance before and what his thoughts are toward the 26.2 mile distance. Among the questions discussed: - Feelings about the race now that he's had time to process it. - The decision to race a half marathon - How and why he started working with Ray Treacy (also Molly Huddle's coach) - The Lone Wolf mentality and how he stays motived through solo workouts - What does he consider his best race ever? - Funniest interaction and story with a drug tester Listener questions include: - What does he do to stay healthy? - Are oats part of his pre-race go-to? What's his favorite post-race meal? - Beer Mile: Hassan Mead vs. Ben True - What's the best place to run in Lebanon? - Favorite form of cross training when it's not skiing season? - Responding to allegations from his neighbor on why the neighborhood smells of home-brewed coffee - Will he ever make a return to posting his workouts on Strava? “I'm happy with what I did on the track, what I did at shorter distances. I'm good with that. I'm good with who I am, with where I've been, all of those things, mistakes I've made along the way—I'm OK with that. In the marathon though, I just know that my back is against the wall and I feel like I still have something to prove to myself still. These last two marathons aren't going to define what I've done—the rest of my career, I'm happy with that, I can put that in my back pocket—but I want to make that fourth Olympic team.” Three-time Olympian and former American 5,000m American record holder Dathan Ritzenhein comes on the podcast to discuss a wide range of topics, including the upcoming Boston Marathon, training with the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, the changes he's made to his training in order to stay healthy at 35 years of age, and why he's still competing despite dozens of injuries over the years, including 15 stress fractures, three surgeries, a ruptured plantar fascia, and myriad other issues. “I've been doing this twice a day since I was 13 or 14, and so not that it's all I know, but it's what I know,” he told me. “I have plans post-running but I still genuinely enjoy training and I think that's one thing a lot of people get sick of—they get sick of training. They like the lifestyle, they like running, they like going to races, and I love all those things too, but I like the challenge and I like the way I feel when I train. It's just a passion—if you don't have it, it won't matter and when it's gone, I'll probably know pretty quick. But I still have it, I still have goals, and when you have goals and you enjoy what you're doing, it's not a job. It's not hard.” Also in this conversation, Ritzenhein and I discuss the arc of his career, including training hard from a young age and how that may have contributed to his many injuries over the years, what he would change as a young athlete knowing what he knows now, the deepest he's ever dug in a race, and the importance of having a solid support system when he's training hard. “The ability is there and I know it,” Ritzenhein says. “A lot of the time I feel as good as ever…and I'm not going to be making the same mistakes I made in 2016 and think that I can do it on my own. I have to have this team to help me get there. And that's part of the reason [I signed with Hansons-Brooks] and why I'm so focused on [Boston] right now. Finally, we also cover the memorable summer of 2009 when he finished sixth at world championships in the 10,000m, broke the American record in the 5,000m, and ran 60-flat to finish third in the world half-marathon championships, the complexities of training for and racing the marathon, what he's learned coaching other athletes, and a heck of a lot more. Alan Webb, the American record holder in the mile, joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to take a trip down memory lane and catch up on what he's up to nowadays. Webb retired from track in 2014 and then made a run for the 2016 Olympics in the triathlon. The triathlon chapter did not pan out as planned and he now owns a truck repair business in Oregon. "For me, I started to kind of take on a different mentality," Webb says. "I started to enjoy watching others be in that moment. You kind of know when someone is building that momentum and seeing it...You just have a genuine appreciation of someone going through something you felt...It changed for me and that's when I started to know that it was time to step away." "It became hard to genuinely give it everything I had," Webb adds. "I couldn't dig down deep like I used to. That's when I was like 'You're not digging!' It was hard. It was honestly hard mentally to dig down deep. I wasn't what I would recommend to someone else. If I was coaching I wouldn't want them to do what I was doing...I would give up sometimes. That was hard. Knowing I was doing that." We delve into the magic of that 2007 season and what the impact was of that 3:46.91 at a tiny meet in in Brasschaat, Belgium. We did start to think about how long does he think the record will stand. The closest someone has come is 3:50.53 by Matt Centrowitz in May 2014 and that’s still 4 seconds off. Among the questions explored: What was it like stepping off the track at the Millrose Games and retiring at 31 years old? Does he believe in the idea that runners who thrive so early in their careers simply can’t maintain that peak? We get the full rundown on Webb's weight room training including how much he would bench before his races and what his routine was. What's the deepest that he's ever had to dig for a race? As he begins his coaching career soon, what coach from his career does he think he may resonate the most with? He was coached by Scott Raczko, Alberto Salazar, Ron Warhurst, Jason Vigilante, Jerry Schumacher and Jon Marcus in his career. Whose career would you rather have: Webb's, Ryan Hall's, or Dathan Ritzenhein's? Can Webb make the case for why they should pick him? Or does he have a different opinion? We take a few listener questions and more. ------- This episode was brought to you by Maurten. Three-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein joined the CITIUS MAG Podcast just days after announcing that he has joined the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project and will be training under the guidance of Keith and Kevin Hanson in Michigan. Ritzenhein is now 34 years old but remains intent on trying to qualify for his fourth Olympic team in 2020. Dathan Ritzenhein is one of the most successful American distance runners of all time with three Olympic appearances. Today we get to talk to Dathan about his recent great run against Mo Farah at the Great North 1/2, his upcoming NYC Marathon appearance and how he has prepared for it. We talk training, nutrition, and fat burning as well as what he is doing differently to stay healthy. Dathan, thank for joining us today, can you tell our listeners how you got started in running when you were a kid? You have been training for the NYC Marathon and recently ran the Great North 1/2 Marathon. You ran a 60:12, just 12 seconds off your PR and finishing a very strong second to Mo Farah. It sounds like you are running the best you have in 6-7 years and you must be healthy, how is your training going for NYC? Can you give us an example of what the week looks like for you leading up to a marathon? We have a great field coming up for the NYC marathon, they are offering $100,000 in American only price money. How much does that American only price money play in getting such a strong field? Is there one person, besides yourself obviously that American running fans should really be watching out for? Some people have been able to excel while being self-coached, while others never were able to find a great long-term groove. How is the self-coaching going for you? How has your training changed since you left Oregon and started training on your own again? Do you think less high-end speed stuff has helped you stay healthier? You are dong some coaching yourself now? You have literally had some of the best coaches int he world From Wetmore to Brad Hudson and then Salazar. What did you learn from them that you use in your coaching now? Some questions we got from Twitter: For a podium finish you need a great finish. What did you do differently with the Great North race to ensure a great finish. Do you do any specific marathon training to work on being more efficient burning fat? Not that you are old, but as you get older you need to focus more on the process and nutrition than a college kid does. What changes have you made to your nutrition over the years? Over the years as you run into injuries, what have you done to stay in shape while injured? How often are you in the gym during the week? Are we going to see you on track again or do you plan on focusing on the roads from here on out? Any predictions for NYC? How about on the women’s side of NYC. Molly, Kim and Neely representing America, how do you think they are going to do?
