Did you know Ben Franklin witnessed the first human flight? No, he wasn't with the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk. In fact, it was 120 years earlier in 1783 when two aeronauts floated over Paris in a hot air balloon. Franklin described watching the balloon's majestic ascent in his journal. In the early days of ballooning, experiments with balloon fuels and designs occasionally had catastrophic results. Since then, the safety of flying a balloon has come a long way. Today, ballooning is one of the safest and most beautiful modes of human flight for aeronauts, passengers and people on the ground. In this episode, you'll hear from Kim and Adam Magee, founders of The Balloon Training Academy and FAA Safety Team representatives. The Magees share how they got started in ballooning, the training process for balloon pilots (who are known as aeronauts) and advice for aspiring aeronauts.Learn how aeronauts communicate with their ground crew and other users of the national airspace, and about the technologies and tricks balloonists use to track wind patterns. Get a glimpse into the vibrant culture of ballooning, from creatively shaped balloons to unforgettable events with spectacular traditions—like the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta where over 500 hot air balloons traverse the skies above New Mexico.Ballooning can be both safe and exciting. The FAA has rules for student, private and commercial aeronauts that help keep everyone safe. We require commercial aeronauts to hold medical certificates when flying paying passengers and work with the Balloon Federation of America on an accreditation program.  If you're interested in learning more, go to FAASafety.gov and contact the Balloon Federation of America.   Meet Our Guests  Adam and Kimberly Magee are the Co-Founders of The Balloon Training Academy and FAA Safety Team Representatives. Adam, the Academy's President, is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Designated Pilot Examiner, the 2019 FAA Flight Instructor of the Year, and the 2021 FAA Safety Team Representative of the Year. Kimberly, the Academy's Vice President, holds 6 World Records and 9 National Records in hot air ballooning. Just last month, Nina set three new National Records including 46 meters (151 feet) in the Constant weight No Fins (CNF) division and 58 meters (190 feet) in the Free Immersion (FIM) division. We talk all about it, along with her history and work as a visual artist this week.Nina McGowan is a visual artist who is primarily concerned with the human body, and considers it a tool for understanding, mediating, and perceiving the world. She uses freediving as a research tool to inform and direct her artwork. Her current themes address the overwhelm that people cite when they think about the scale of the climate crises. Her work attempts to re-scale and re-map aspects of the crises to the human body. She performs on stage, makes sculpture, and speaks publicly on these topics. We have a special one for episode 75! Pat and Sandy, along with Gail Hafley, visited with local running legends, Mike Shea and Mary Shea, at Mike's home in Raleigh. Mike and Mary filled us in on many stories, and it should be noted that Mike is 93 years young! Mike Shea was a pioneer in the Raleigh running community. After completing a successful running and then coaching career at NC State in the mid 60's, Mike began organizing local races and was one of the first to provide opportunities for youth and women to compete in track, cross country, and road races. His selfless determination to provide opportunities to all levels of runners helped make Raleigh the running mecca it is today. Several of Mike's 7 children were elite youth runners, with Julie and Mary going on to very successful collegiate and post collegiate careers. Mary Shea still holds the prep 10,000 meter record, which she set in June of 1979, narrowly edging out Joan Benoit (Samuelson) in 32:52.5. This run came just after she set National Records in the 2 Mile and 5000 meters. She would go on to finish second, behind her sister Julie, in the 5000 meters at the 1980 Olympic Trials; an event that was just an exhibition at the time. She would then finish 3rd in the Boston Marathon in 1983, while running for Nike.

If you are affected by these issues please seek help, support or contact https://www.thecalmzone.net/This week's guest is Helena Bourdillon, a Breath trainer, free-diver and mental health advocate. 22 years ago she was on the verge of suicide. She survived & triumphed over chronic depression & now freedives to depths of -76m.  With 7 National Records for depth, she has represented Great Britain at the World Championships four times. Helena was kept out of the water for the last couple of years due to covid so she has focused on her own & others' therapeutic journeys, using breath-work, at a time when many people were feeling  loneliness, anxiety and depression. For some this was a new feeling, for others the pandemic exacerbated the condition. From a young age Helena had suffered with depression and at a certain point realised she was experiencing suicide ideation. Always a lover of water, it was when she experienced free-diving that she felt for the first time, what it was like for the chatter in her head to quieten down and to feel a deep relaxation. It was when she did a crowd funding video to help her go the 2017 Freediving Depth World Championships that she talked openly about her depression for the first time. She wanted to dive deeper because the deeper she went, the more of a platform she would have to tell and show people what was possible: that life is worth living and worth fighting for. The breath work sessions she now does are geared towards helping people who suffer with anxiety and panic attacks as well as helping people who suffer with Long Covid etcSome days it is just making it out of bed.  But being true to yourself and what you need takes courage, and each intentional breath you take can help you get to the next step. Thanks so much Helena for being so open about suicide and chronic depression and for daring to inspire others by diving deeper, breathing better, and learning to live happier. Thanks also for showing us that our breath is our best friend and that by using it well we can live better, deeper, more fulfilling lives. You can find out more about Helena's work on www.HelenaBourdillon.comAnd follow her on LinkedIn @helenabourdillon Join Lou on Linkedin, or sign up to her mailing list for her newsletter and a free podcast guesting mini-guide. Like many other countries, the UK has a growing drug problem. In England around 3 million people take drugs and drug deaths are the highest on record at nearly 3,000 a year. In the last decade, heroin-related deaths have more than doubled and cocaine-related deaths have grown fivefold. The situation in Scotland is even worse – now the drug death capital of Europe.   The UK government tackles drugs as a criminal justice matter focused on punishment, rather than a public health matter focused on support. But many countries are taking a different approach, most famously Portugal which in 2000 decriminalised all drugs and concentrated instead on public health and harm reduction. The result? From one of the highest drug death rates in Europe to one of the lowest.   How did they do it and what can we learn?   Our Chief Executive Dr Jennifer Dixon is joined by: Dame Carol Black, who was commissioned by the Home Office and the Department of Health and Social Care to undertake a two part independent review of drugs, to inform the government's thinking on what more can be done to tackle the harm that drugs cause. Dr João Castel-Branco Goulão, a Portuguese physician and the current national drug coordinator for Portugal. He is credited as being the main architect of Portugal's drugs policy established in 2000 and since then has advised on drug policy for successive governments. Ever wondered what dreams are made of? Sometimes, I think it´s just paper. 27.9 seconds. Back in 2012 Takuo Toda, guessing he´s japanese, he threw his paperplane and it stayed in the air for 27.9 seconds. That´s the world record still, longest air time for a paperplane. So far. I don´t know much. Much about anything really. I know you can´t beat world records with paperplanes in the rain. I know you cant fold paperplanes out of wet paper. I know you´d have to fold and fly the paperplane like inside, somewhere dry and kind of spacious. If it's raining. It never rains in outer space. One day there might just be a paperplane in space, in fact, the same Takuo Toda along with a professor at Tokyo university, came close to actually doing that. Launching a paperplane from the international spacestation. Years later another group of people sent a paper plane from Germany to Australia. This and more on today's episode of Frothland. Hello and welcome to the Alcohol Alert, brought to you by The Institute of Alcohol Studies. In this edition:Home drinking increasingly becomes the new normal during lockdownEconomics think tank study says a reformed duty system would improve MUP’s effectivenessAlcohol Health Alliance UK pricing survey finds that alcohol is still being sold at pocket money pricesScottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems call for all MSP candidates to promise a total ban on alcohol advertising ahead of the 2021 electionsIAS to hold an online event presenting new findings on alcohol policy and nudge theory 🎵 Podcast feature 🎵The Scottish Government launches a free FASD eLearning resourceWe hope you enjoy our roundup of stories below: please feel free to share. Thank you.Lockdown: home drinking becomes the new normalNovember saw the UK enter into a second lockdown, as ministers realised that the tier system for controlling the virus could no longer contain the rising R rates throughout the UK. As a result, all pubs were forced to close from 05 November until 02 December (Morning Advertiser, 31 Oct), and anticipated bans such as that of alcohol consumed on ScotRail trains came into force (STV News, 16 Nov). The penultimate month of the calendar year was also a time for reflecting on how people’s drinking habits had changed since the first lockdown.A study from alcohol industry-funded body Drinkaware found that women were a bigger influence than men out of the 26% of people whose alcohol intake increased between March and June (Daily Mail, 02 Nov), the primary reason for doing so being that they had ‘more free time available’.The Royal College of Psychiatrists observed that nearly half (45%) of its psychiatrists had seen a rise in patients whose alcohol or drug use had contributed to a deterioration in their mental health during the pandemic (The Telegraph, 15 Nov), Dr Katherine Severi, IAS chief executive, explained that ‘the closure of bars and restaurants had driven people into drinking at home, which meant it was not only cheaper than buying in a restaurant but also that people were consuming more.’Data from Public Health England (PHE) also showed that older age groups all significantly increased their alcohol intake during lockdown, with a fifth of those aged 45 to 74 years drinking more than 21 units a week. Those aged 55 to 64 who drank at least a pint a day (three units) jumped from 17·4% to 20·6% with one in 20 consuming more than 50 units weekly, almost three pints a day.And an Opinion Matters poll of more than 1,000 people aged over 50 years, commissioned by We Are With You found that: 20% were drinking more since March; 10% earlier in the day; and more than half drink at a level that could cause health problems now or in the future, a cause of great concern for 35% of those surveyed who are children of those parents. Projected tax receipts and sales data appeared to confirm that off-licence vendors of alcohol have profited substantially from the pandemic. The Office for Budget Responsibility’s economic and fiscal outlook revised alcohol duties upward by an average £1 billion a year, as receipts in 2020/21 held up much better than assumed (24 Nov):The loss in receipts from closures of pubs and restaurants has been more than offset by higher sales in supermarkets and other shops. Alcohol consumption has therefore been one of the few tax bases left relatively unscathed by the virus. The 2020 British Lifestyles Report from consumer research group Mintel estimated that annual retail value sales of alcoholic drinks will grow at its fastest rate for at least a decade – 16% – to reach £25.5 billion in 2020, ‘as people trade nights out for evenings in’ (20 Nov). Spending per household on alcohol is expected to average £129 in 2020.Jack Duckett, Mintel associate director of consumer lifestyles research, also wrote of the potential for further growth from drinks makers appealing to the mature drinker:The growth in the size of the older population over the next five years, and the fact that they are most likely to be insulated from the financial impact of the pandemic, makes targeting the ‘grey pound’ particularly timely for all brands including alcoholic drinks. In Ireland, the Revenue discovered a slump in drinking outside the home, as their sales data recorded a 4.5% fall in alcohol consumption since the start of the year, mainly because of pubs forced to close for lockdowns. Alcohol Action Ireland warned that drinkers ‘had largely substituted their on-trade activity with unregulated home drinking’, a sentiment echoed by the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland chief Padraig Cribben. He told the Irish Sun it was ‘obvious that because of the pandemic a massive volume of alcohol is now consumed at home’ (03 Nov). And where drinking patterns have moved indoors, so have increased risks of alcohol-related harm. Consultant psychiatrist Rebecca Lawrence wrote in The Guardian that although it is difficult to determine the exact picture of British drinking habits during lockdown, we can ‘intuit’ some things (18 Nov):I worry about those who were drinking just a bit too much before who have now tipped into problem drinking. It doesn’t take a lot, and there are many on this uncertain edge. Stress levels are high, with fears about infection or economic insecurity taking their toll. Many of my patients who are already alcohol-dependent tell me they have relapsed due to boredom, and, even more importantly, lack of any human contact. When we talk about relapse prevention, we talk about seeing people, talking to people, going to groups, and all this is up the spout at present. There are groups online, but not everyone can access these. In any case, it’s not the same, as those of us who are all Zoomed out will testify to.Sometimes too much contact is the problem: families are forced together, something that can be hard even for the most loving partners or parents. Alcohol can be a form of mental, if not physical, escape.Whether newly dependent or relapsed, what’s clear is that people need help to get through this.Funding public health: Winter plans and ‘Spending Reviews’In the final week of lockdown, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed the government’s post-lockdown winter plan to the House of Commons: a return to the tier system, with the added detail of businesses to be permitted to serve alcohol ‘only as part of a substantial meal’ in designated tier 2 zones of the country, a move unlikely to curb increasingly routinised home drinking habits and their potential harms (23 Nov).Furthermore, the lack of sufficient services for the rising numbers of people struggling with alcohol dependency and other substance misuse problems led to calls from the Local Government Association (LGA) – which represents councils responsible for public health – for the chancellor to invest in vital public health services ahead of the Spending Review (LGA, 21 Nov):COVID-19 [has] exposed existing health inequalities which need to be levelled up if we are to protect our communities in future, and so to address this divide, the Spending Review ought to have reversed the £700 million of public health funding reductions experienced by councils over the previous five years.Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak authorised the provision of £254 million of additional resource funding in 2021/22, to ‘bolster’ substance misuse and frontline support services, for tackling homelessness and rough sleeping (HM Treasury, 25 Nov).As we head into the winter, with alcohol-related health outcomes worsen for many drinkers across the UK because of the drastic change to consumption habits induced by the pandemic, the calls of local authorities to support public health services may yet grow louder.Reformed duty system would improve MUP’s effectivenessEconomics think tank the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) have published new research showing that while minimum unit prices for alcohol (MUP) are reasonably well targeted at heavy drinkers, they may come at the cost of reducing tax revenues (20 Nov).Using data on millions of alcohol purchases made by Scottish and English households, the analysis shows that:Prior to the introduction of the minimum unit price, half of all transactions for alcohol bought in shops in Scotland were below 50p per unit. The minimum unit price led to a 5% increase in the average price per unit, but some very cheap products saw their prices double, while more expensive products were unaffected. This led to an 11% fall in units purchased per adult per week, with larger falls for more heavily drinking households. However, the IFS fear that MUP creates windfall revenues for the alcohol industry, while reducing revenue for HM Treasury:The analysis finds that if the 50p minimum unit price were extended to the whole of the UK under the existing system of alcohol taxes, then tax revenue would fall by around £390 million per year. This is in addition to projected annual losses from recent changes to alcohol duties averaging £200m to 2024/25.The report’s authors conclude that ‘a minimum unit price, combined with a more coherent set of taxes on alcohol, would be just as well targeted at heavy drinkers and would limit the fall in revenue for the exchequer’.Alternatively, they propose replacing the current system of duties with ‘a two-rate structure that taxes alcohol in proportion to its alcohol content, with a higher rate on strong spirits’, which would lead to an increase in tax revenue of over £70 million. One of the report’s authors, associate director Kate Smith, said:The current system of alcohol duties is incoherent – for example, if you prefer a pint of beer to cider, you may currently pay more than twice as much tax for a drink with the same alcohol content. Brexit offers a valuable opportunity to improve the way we tax alcohol. A simple reform that taxes drinks in proportion to their alcohol content, with a higher rate on strong spirits, targets the purchases of heavy drinkers while raising tax revenue.Public health experts from Alcohol Health Alliance UK, the Foundation for Liver Research, the House of Lords, and the pro-vice-chancellor of health and life sciences at the University of Bristol, welcomed the report, stating that the measures proposed by the IFS could save more than 5,000 lives over the next decade. In a letter to The Times (23 Nov), they wrote:Although the money from minimum unit pricing alone stays with the retailer, the saving of costs to the NHS of reduced drinking outweighs that loss. Also, if combined with a scaled and consistent alcohol duty system to offset some of the wider costs of alcohol harm to society, these measures could save more than 5,000 lives in the next decade.Alcohol prices are ‘small change’ to drinkers, survey findsAdapted from the Alcohol Health Alliance UK press releaseAlcohol continues to be sold at pocket money prices in England, with it being possible to drink the weekly low-risk drinking guideline of 14 units of alcohol for less than the price of a cup of high street coffee, according to a new report from the Alcohol Health Alliance (AHA) UK, a coalition of more than 55 organisations including medical royal colleges and health charities (10 Nov).Comparing the prices of alcoholic drinks sold in shops and supermarkets across England, Scotland and Wales, researchers found the cheapest products were all sold in England, the only nation of the three not to have a minimum unit price of 50 pence.Cider is the cheapest available product in England and is being sold for as little as 19p per unit of alcohol, meaning that consumers can reach the weekly low-risk drinking guideline of 14 units of alcohol for just £2·68 – about the price of a large coffee in high street coffee chains. A single bottle of the cheapest cider also contains more alcohol than eight pints of beer – and costs 8 pence less than a single pint in a pub.For the price of a standard cinema ticket (£7·11), you could buy two bottles of wine, containing 19·5 units and have 13 pence change leftover, and a one-litre bottle of vodka, which contains 37·5 units, is cheaper than a large pizza at Dominos (£14·99).In light of the findings, the AHA calls on the government to commit to tackling cheap, high-strength alcohol in its review of the alcohol duty system and through introducing minimum unit pricing in England. AHA chair, professor Sir Ian Gilmore, said:The low price of high strength alcohol continues to cause immeasurable damage to the health of our nation. Alcohol is linked to 80 deaths in the UK every day, as well as seven types of cancer and stroke. To tackle the harm alcohol causes, we need to urgently address its price. Alcohol duty is currently too low to cover the costs of alcohol harm to the NHS and other public services. Public Health England estimates that alcohol costs the UK at least £27 billion a year. Yet over the past five years, alcohol duty has raised just £10·5-£12·1 billion annually. To pay for the costs to society that alcohol imposes, stronger drinks should be taxed more. Reforming alcohol duty will help create a fairer system for everyone as well as improving our nation’s health. With alcohol-related hospital admissions at record highs, and liver disease rates on the rise, we can’t afford for alcohol to remain at such low prices. In other researchNew annual mortality and morbidity statistics for Scotland showed a mixed outlook: there was a substantial improvement for the former, but not so for the latter. The number of alcohol-specific deaths was 1,020 deaths in 2019, 10% down on the previous year’s tally of 1,136 (National Records of Scotland (NRS), 24 Nov).2019 represents the first substantial decrease in recent years, after a period of generalincrease since 2012, and is only the fourth occasion when there has been a reduction in alcohol-specific deaths of around 10% or more in a single year (in 2007, 2009 and 2012) since records began. However, the NRS was quick to note that ‘although an annual decrease of this magnitude is notable, further years will be required to see if this reduction continues and conclude that this is a sustained shift in alcohol-specific deaths in Scotland.’In comparison, annual alcohol-related hospital statistics show incremental changes in admissions (35,781) and patient (23,685) numbers to general acute hospitals in 2019/20 compared with the previous year (Public Health Scotland, 17 Nov). There has been no significant improvement in numbers since 2012/13.Researchers from the Behaviour and Health Research Unit at the University of Cambridge have developed a preliminary typology of drinking behaviours from existing evidence of the impact of glassware design on those behaviours, as a basis for reducing alcohol consumption to improve population health (Health Psychology Review, 18 Nov).Despite the ‘paucity of evidence’ over the issue, the team were able to cut a distinction between macro (measures of drinking outcomes involving consumption, or proxies for consumption) and micro (a form of short-term influence on drinking) -drinking behaviours. They also explored the roles of two sets of possible underlying mechanisms – perception and affordance – in determining a drinker’s actions. The study’s authors concluded that using this typology as a framework and starting point for understanding the micro-structure of a drinking episode may harness important insights for developing interventions aimed at reducing consumption, such as how an intervention works to reduce intake, plus other important effects on drinking behaviours ‘that may not be captured by a “macro” measure of drinking in a given study’.Almost three quarters of 15 and 16-year-olds in Ireland have tried alcohol, with around half of these using alcohol 'to make social gatherings more fun', according to the new iteration of the European Schools Project for Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) (Irish Health, 17 Nov). The survey of almost 2,000 secondary schoolchildren found that 73% of respondents had tried alcohol, while 41% had drunk alcohol in the previous 30 days. 49% said drinking made social gatherings more fun, while almost as many (48%) did so to enjoy a party. The most common age that teenagers began drinking alcohol was 15 (52%), and a sixth (16%) said they had been drunk in the previous 30 days. The survey also found that increased alcohol use among the teens was associated with lower parental education levels and lower parental monitoring, truancy and lower school grades.Nearly two in three people feel the current ‘drink responsibly’ message on bottles is too vague and should be replaced with specific health warnings, specialists at the Priory Group addiction and mental health service found (LBC, 18 Nov).In a poll of 1,000 adults for Alcohol Awareness Week, 59% said beverages should display a cancer warning and eight in ten feel the UK ‘has a problem’ with binge drinking. The 2019/20 adult substance misuse treatment statistics report published by Public Health England suggests that an estimated 82% of adults in need of specialist treatment for alcohol do not receive it (26 Nov).Alongside small year-on-year changes to the numbers of adults in treatment, the figures showed that people in treatment for alcohol only are the second largest group (28%) of all adults in treatment, the majority of people (59%) who started treatment for drug and alcohol problems in 2019/20, said they had a problem with alcohol, with 65% (50,957) reporting that it was their only problem substance, and although still relatively high, the proportion of people with alcohol only problems leaving treatment free of dependence has fallen three percentage points since 2015/2016 (from 62%), hinting at the start of a declining trend.SHAAP manifesto calls for total ban on alcohol advertisingAlcohol control campaign group Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) have urged every candidate in next year’s Holyrood election to support a ‘total ban’ on alcohol advertising (STV News, 19 Nov).Publishing their manifesto ahead of the vote in May, they list four ‘focus areas’ aimed at reducing alcohol-related harms that all parties should support:Affordability, availability and attractivenessInvesting in and improving treatment and support servicesSupporting recovery and reducing health inequalitiesProtecting children and young peopleThe manifesto states that ‘as we approach the Scottish parliament election of 2021, it is more important than ever that we do not lose sight of long-term public health measures that can improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in Scotland, build the resilience of our NHS and local care services, and benefit the economy’.SHAAP chair Dr Peter Rice said: Covid-19 has shone a light on the patchy and often disjointed nature of alcohol treatment service provision, even prior to lockdown, and we do not yet know what long-term impact the pandemic will have on people’s drinking behaviours, though research so far indicates that heavier drinkers have increased their consumption. Our 2021 manifesto highlights cost-effective, evidence-based policies that, if properly implemented, will work to ensure that Covid-19 does not exacerbate alcohol-related harm and health inequalities in Scotland and that we are able to meet long-term public health goals that are essential if we are to build a healthier, fairer future.Online event on alcohol policy and nudge theory🎵 Podcast feature 🎵The Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS) is holding a seminar exploring the latest evidence on nudge theory in alcohol policy, in conjunction with a new report (02 Dec).Using a case study of UK Government alcohol policy since 2017, IAS research and policy officer Lucy Bryant examined the framing of individuals and alcohol industry actors within public health nudge policy interventions, revealing ways in which nudge theories risked undermining support for better evidenced public health alcohol measures such as pricing interventions in practice. Bryant’s findings will be presented alongside new research from Professor Mark Petticrew (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), as well as insights from the gambling field from Philip Newall PhD (postdoctoral researcher at CQUniversity's Experimental Gambling Research Laboratory).Dr Gillian Shorter of Queen's University Belfast, who is chairing the event, said:With alcohol implemented in over half the Sustainable Development Goals, now really is a good time to act with responsible policies to preserve health… so we posit to you: to what extent can we use nudge policies for effective behaviour change, and to what extent do they crowd out other potentially more effective policy options? 1930 saw the quiet conclusion of a remarkable era. The tiny population of St. Kilda, an isolated Scottish archipelago, decided to end their thousand-year tenure as the most remote community in Britain and move to the mainland. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the remarkable life they'd shared on the island and the reasons they chose to leave. We'll also track a stork to Sudan and puzzle over the uses of tea trays. Intro: Reportedly the 3rd Earl of Darnley believed he was a teapot. Almost six million people in the United States have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. And with baby boomers getting older, those numbers are only expected to rise. This disease, despite being studied by scientists for more than 100 years, has no cure. In our two-part series we first dive into the personal lives of the people at the heart of this disease: the patients and their caregivers. Then we uncover why effective treatments for Alzheimer’s lag so far behind those for cancer, heart disease, and HIV. It turns out that for all the decades researchers have been at war with the disease, they’ve also been at war with each other. This is a 50 minute audio file of a talk I delivered at the National Records of Scotland on 7 August 2019, in connection with my hugely successful exhibition that they kindly hosted: ‘Prisoners or Patients? Criminal Insanity in Victorian Scotland’. It explains the records I used and the development of the criminal justice system’s attempts to deal with those who had committed serious offences, but were found to be insane and thus not responsible for their actions. The justice system faced the same problems as today and dealt with ‘prisoner-patients’ or ‘state lunatics’ (as they were known) in a remarkably humane fashion, given the constraints of limited resources, basic medicine, and different social attitudes 150 years ago. The talk explains in depth who the offenders were and what they had done, the processes for admission to, and release from the only such specialist facility in Scotland prior to the opening of The State Hospital at Carstairs in 1948, medical and scientific understandings of insanity, and the social context of Victorian Scotland.

The Carnivore Diet with Dr. Shawn Baker MD

Shan talks to Dr Shawn Baker, a doctor, athlete, father, and proponent of a carnivorous lifestyle. Dr Baker is a world-class athlete, with several titles of Championships and National Records to his name. He has managed to break three world records after turning to a full carnivore diet. He talks about this diet in detail, about its nutrition and health benefits. He talks about the sleep benefits he has received from the diet and an overall feeling of well-being. His upcoming book contains in-depth information about adapting and living a Carnivore diet lifestyle.   KEY TAKEAWAYS A conventional doctor who has done a lot of work in Orthopaedics talks about his work beyond that. I trained as an Orthopaedic surgeon in the United States. I definitely was a conventionally trained allopathic doctor, MD. I did that for a number of years, quite enjoyed that, and had some interesting experiences. I practiced military surgery, spent a lot of time doing war trauma in places like Afghanistan. I have been a nuclear weapons officer, and an athlete for most of my life. I was World Champion in Highland Games for the Masters Class, All American Masters Athlete Track and Fuel Athlete, I was National Record Holder and Powerlifter. So I have had a different background than a lot of people. In my 40s my health started to go not in the way I wanted it to with regards to putting on weight, blood pressure, metabolism and so forth. Despite the fact that I was still training intensely, being in athletics I started running in issues with health, nutrition, lifestyle and that's what has brought me to where I am today, nearly a decade later.  Journey around nutrition. You learn about vitamin nutrient deficiencies, you learn the basics about macronutrients, amino acids and essential fats. In medical school, you don't really get much as far as how nutrition potentially has a role in mitigating, treating or even potentially curing certain diseases. You are told people eat junk food, they eat too much, you're lazy, no exercise. That's the kind of background information you take away from medical school. As I came to find out with myself that nutrition has a much greater role in not just maintaining some healthy body weight but in every single disease process we deal with. In even acute diseases, nutrition plays a role in healing surgical patients. Nutrition plays a tremendous role with chronic diseases, and even some genetic disorders seem to respond to nutrition.  Nutrition led to carnivorism. That was being objective about what was going on with my personal health. It was experimenting to see what actually works for me and be open enough to explore what things are out there and what things I can try. It was not like one day I decided I'm gonna eat a bunch of meat. This is an evolutionary process. It took 7, 8 years. I was never happy with a low-fat diet, I was hungry constantly, never satisfied with the food. Therefore I thought this is not sustainable for the long term. With my desire to compete athletically I started to look into the potential benefits of animal source nutrition. I started looking into how the weightlifters and bodybuilders had done it. I came across a community of people who were doing a carnivore style diet. They have been doing it for close to two decades. They were seemingly doing extremely well in exhibiting vitamin health and had no medical issues. I thought I would try it for a short period of time, for a couple of days a steak and eggs diet. In late, 2016 I thought I would do it for 30 days. I went back to my standard diet after 30 days and after a day or two, and I did not feel as good. I felt fatigued, I felt pains started to come back. So I went back to the meat-based diet. For me, it is 98% meat, some eggs, a little bit of dairy, seafood. It's been almost 3 years now since I switched to a carnivore diet, and my athletic performance went up. I could see an 8 to 10% increase in power output. Without any changes in training, I was able to set three world records shortly after I turned 50 years of age as a full carnivore.  30 days of an all-out carnivore for the first time. My blood pressure was normal, I just had a mild headache for about a week to 10 days. My digestion was wonderful, no problem with bowel movements. It was a very pleasant experience, great energy. I saw the mild aches and pains I had to go away.  How is your sleep in the carnivore diet? I fall asleep usually within 10 minutes. 90% of the time I sleep straight through without interruption for about 6 to 7 hours. I generally always wake up before the sun comes up. I wake up naturally and do not usually require an alarm clock. As a part of the community, I have realised that your sleep quality improves and your sleep volume drops by about 10 to 15%.  The Carnivore diet is deficient in carbohydrates and essential vitamins like Vitamin C, how do we make up for that? When I wanted to do this I was curious about this as well. You will see a number of potential deficiencies around this diet. There is no role of fibre in this diet. With Vitamin C we know there are some transporters across different cell membranes. In a higher glucose environment, Vitamin C is competitively inhibited and therefore we see less absorption of Vitamin C. We also see that interestingly human red blood cells do have the capacity to actually recycle Vitamin C which is something that not many people are aware of. One of the major function of Vitamin C is that it is an antioxidant. In low carbohydrate states our antioxidants systems particularly things like glutathione are regulated. We may obviate some of the need of antioxidants of the Vitamin C by regulating around systems in a low carb diet. Also, Vitamin C is very important in the function of carnitine which is part of the fat cycle. When we are ingesting carnitine we have actual transporters in the gut which can take up full carnosine. It is a misconception that we can only take amino acids, a number of di and tripeptide transporters that are contained within our gut. The other function of Vitamin C is when we don't have sufficient Vitamin C relative to our needs, we start to develop symptoms of scurvy, bleeding gum problems, teeth falling out, sores and cuts won't heal. This is all due to the collagen synthesis. If we look at Vitamin C's role in collagen synthesis, it helps to take proline and lysine, hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine. In meat-based diet, we are getting that in ample amount. Even a steak has 3% of its content as collagen. There are all kinds of compensatory mechanisms.  Quality of meat. If you are trying to make a diet of salami and spam, you are going to fail. You need to have fresh primal cut meat or maybe ground beef.  Vegan movement supposedly saving the planet. As a cynic, I see this plant-based movement has been co-opted by these processed food companies. They are trying to greenwash or health wash their products because they contain plants in them, but really they are these cheap ingredients that are highly profitable. A typical day in Shawn Baker's life. I eat a fully carnivorous diet. I am 6 foot 5 inches and about 240 to 250 pounds. I am putting away a close to about 4 pounds of food a day. I take two meals a day. If I want to lose weight I will eat a little less and if I want to put on weight I will eat a little more. Usually, it is breakfast and an early dinner. 95% of my food comes from red meat, typically I eat steaks and burgers. I would eat eggs a couple of times, I might eat seafood a couple of times, I have a little bit of dairy here and there although for me if I eat too much dairy it turns negative. I try to limit that. The nice thing is I do not have cravings to eat other kinds of food.  New book by Shawn Baker - 'The Carnivore Diet.' It's going to be a lot of peoples' first exposure to carnivorism. I talk about my background, and then we go into the theoretical stuff, the evolutionary, historical stuff, and the science behind it. We talk about some of the success stories, and then how to implement a diet. I do talk about the general philosophy and some of the psychology that goes behind it.  Absolute favourite meat dish of Shawn Baker. I am pretty partial to rib eye. I think the reason for that is if we look at human evolution, humans went through this evolutionary process and somewhere around the period of homo erectus they became very good hunters and they became very good at killing things like mammoth, elephants and so on. That was their food of choice. Those animals had a lot of fat and that fat led to human brain development. That is why that appeals to us. Humans got very good at killing those animals and once our easy source of energy went away, now we have to compensate that with cuts of meat like cows.   Best Moments  "Nutrition has a much greater role in not just maintaining some healthy body weight but in every single disease process we deal with." In the late 1950s a Texas town on the Gulf of Mexico was suffering from a devastating, decade-long drought. But while the wells ran dry, the ocean lapped at the town’s shore, taunting the thirsty residents with its endless supply of undrinkable water. Undrinkable, that is, until President John F. Kennedy stepped in to save the day with the promise of science. The evolving technology of desalination wouldn’t just end droughts: it would give us as much water as we wanted. It would allow us to inhabit otherwise uninhabitable places. It would let us make the deserts bloom. But at what cost? Today I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the Fitness Industry’s true characters Derek Woodske. Those of you who don’t know Derek he’s a man of great intellect and passion for his craft, and his has the ability to not only leave you stunned with his knowledge but also in tears of laughter with his comic timing and observational humour. Although Derek is a bear of a man who is a former professional hammer thrower for Canada who broke 2 National Records, he is by all means a gentle giant who seems to value old school manners and respect as much as he does hard work and integrity. He is a man who doesn’t crave confrontation but he is also not afraid to voice his opinions a when he feels people are being misleading, or if they are misrepresenting facts and figures. His achievements in track and field as an athlete, and then as a coach in the NFL and now as a human performance specialist who presents all over the world mean he has spent most of his life in the spotlight, however, I get the feeling that had he found himself on a different path in life he would never be someone who craves attention, especially not for attention’s sake. Luckily for us he didn’t end up on a different path because he is a man who holds a depth of knowledge when it comes to human performance as well as a wealth of priceless personal experience. In this episode with Derek we cover: His Background In Athletics & Overcoming Serious Injury What HInders Most Athletes Performance The Vital Components Of A Training Program Program Design What Should You Be Doing If You Want A Lean Functional Physique Performance Enhancing Drugs In Sports & Recreational Gyms Around The World Crossfit - The Good, The Bad The Ugly What Health Means To Him How He’s Gone Back To An Holistic Approach & Much More To say I had fun interviewing Derek would be an understatement. I could talk shop with him for hours. I would love to get him back on the show to talk about child development in sport, and whether children should specialise in one sport or play mixture of different sports for their athletic progress, as well as a few other areas we didn’t get to cover. You can find Derek here: www.ecobolic.com or on Instagram @DerekWoodske Enjoy the show and as I said don’t forget to share it with your friends and family, as well as writing a comment, or a review on itunes. As an embellishment, those who could afford to bought “relief scraps,” such as the ones shown here. These were like the precursors of modern sticker sheets or die cuts, printed just for the scrapbooking hobby. You could buy colorful images of everything from flowers or children to animals, or angels or Father Christmas. These images were raised or embossed on the paper, which is why they called them reliefs. Relief scraps could be used as embellishments around other items on scrapbook pages, but sometimes they were the only decoration on a page, arranged in pretty patterns. This describes quote “a Sunday Scrap-book…as a source of almost unlimited pleasure and profit to children who can read and write.”   DNA WITH DIAHAN, Your DNA Guide I don't think there is any dispute that the four major online resources for genealogy include Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org, Find My Past, and My Heritage. Of those four, only Ancestry.com has attempted any real integration of DNA test results into traditional genealogy. That is, until recently. On May 19, 2016 that they will be adding a DNA matching service to their offering, and then on November 7th announced they would be conducting DNA tests themselves. Now, MyHeritage has enjoyed partnerships with 23andMe and Family Tree DNA for quite some time now, but those partnerships have been woefully underutilized and are little more than an affiliate service, where MyHeritage provides a discounted rate to test at those companies. There is no question that the launch of DNA Heritage fully into the genetic genealogy market is exciting news. In fact, it is something I have been pushing for – we absolutely need someone to challenge AncestryDNA. Competition is good.  In September they began to provide matching results for individuals who had uploaded their results. As of today, uploading your results is still free, so if you have been thinking about it, you may want to take advantage sooner rather than later. As expected, the matches are only as good as the depth of the database, and it is early in the game, so their database is small, but even now we can get an idea of what to expect from MyHeritage as they take their first steps into genetic genealogy. One of the most exciting elements of their November 7th announcement is their development of a Founder Population project where they have handpicked individuals to represent their reference population for calculating ethnicities. They plan to launch with 25 population groups, but will likely increase to 100 in a fairly short amount of time. This is a far more advanced ethnicity report than is currently offered anywhere else. After you have figured out how to download your raw data from your testing company  (see my instructions here: ), and then managed to add it to My Heritage (you have to add a family tree to MyHeritage to do this, see further instructions in their May press release), and waited the requisite time to process, you will receive a notice that you have new DNA matches. For a full review of the features and ins and outs of where to click and what to look at, please refer to the . As for my favorite features, I like how they list all the possible relationships that make sense between you and your match taking into account multiple factors like your age, gender, and your genetics instead of a simple, generic range like 2nd-4th cousins. The accompanying chart that visually shows you all possible relationships is also very helpful. You can access it by clicking on the little question mark icon next to the relationship suggestions. I like that these suggestions remind us that our genetic relationships have different genealogical interpretations. Meaning that genetically, a 2nd cousin once removed, a first cousin twice removed, and a second cousin, all fall within a similar genetic range and it is impossible to determine your exact relationship based on the genetics alone. I also like that they are providing all three genetic descriptors of your relationship: total amount of shared DNA, how many segments are shared, and the size of the longest piece of shared DNA. While this more of an intermediate to advanced piece of your results, it can be important as your relationship analysis becomes more involved. One unique claim made by MyHeritage in their press release about their matching feature addresses a main concern that genetic genealogists have: the lack of pedigree information provided by their matches. MyHeritage claims that 95% of their DNA samples have pedigrees attached. That is remarkable! However, from my own quick calculation of my matches, the number with pedigrees is more like 60%. They also indicated that they will soon be doing a bit of pedigree analysis for you by providing a list of shared surnames and locations between you and your match based on the pedigrees you have both submitted. This will certainly be a welcome addition. According to the November 9th Q and A they haven't decided yet if the ethnicity features will be available to those who only transfer, and they hint at many more features they have in the works that may only be offered to those who purchase their test. In short, the is currently functioning much like the top three genetic genealogy sites (Ancestry, Family Tree DNA, and 23andMe) and like the free tool Gedmatch, offers a meeting place for those who have been tested at one company to meet those who have tested at another, with the added bonus of a promise of new features on the horizon. Allan Findlay, Professor of Population Geography, School of Geography and Geosciences, University of St. Andrews, gives a talk for the COMPAS breakfast briefing series. The impact of global climate change on human mobility and migration has been in the news recently because of the landmark publication of the Foresight research, Migration and Global Environmental Change, a two year study led by the UK Government Office for Science, which drew on a major body of evidence produced by several experts from across the globe to understand how diverse environmental changes will converge on populations between now and 2060; as well as the profound consequences for those who move and for those who stay behind, and also for the regions of origin and destination. This month's presenter, Allan Findlay, was involved in two of the reports that formed part of the Foresight programme's massive evidence base. However, Allan Findlay has been writing on migration in a number of capacities and in this briefing will be reflecting on the evidence that he has developed in his career, to explore some of the possible implications for migration policy. The research is part of the programme of the ESRC Centre for Population Change (CPC), which is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council as the UK's first research centre on population change. Based jointly at the University of Southampton and the National Records of Scotland, CPC brings together expertise from the Universities of Southampton, St. Andrews, Edinburgh, Strathclyde, Stirling and Dundee.
