If you've been following us for a while, you know that Matt & Andrea often experience shoes completely differently, so on this episode they get together to compare & contrast their experiences in Nike's major overhaul to the OG of supershoes: the Vaporfly 4. With a shorter stack height and narrowed down platform, this nimble racer offers a vastly different ride from its big sibling, the Alphafly 3. Andrea loved Vaporfly 3, so how will she feel about the updates? Matt's often found the Vaporflys too unstable, so will that continue? Tune in to see if you side more with Andrea or Matt! At the recent NIKE Earnings Call held on March 21 2024, CEO John Donahoe discussed the company's strategies, emphasizing their confidence in their innovative pipeline, stating: "Most importantly, we're back on our front foot with growing confidence in our innovation pipeline. We know it will take some time to scale these innovations, but we see some early green shoots." This statement touches upon the core of the company's direction, highlighting innovation as the cornerstone of growth within the competitive marketplace. In their latest financial quarter, NIKE has indicated a readiness for expansion, an objective that is reflected in their revenue growth and expanded gross margins. These financial indicators, representing not only the North American market but also Greater China, attest to NIKE's global market adaptability and acceptance. Built into NIKE's strategies is an emphasis on product innovation. Leveraging the strengths of their platform, they are planning upcoming launches like the Air Max DN and Alphafly 3, indicating their intent to stimulate growth in various sports segments. However, NIKE's commitment to innovation extends beyond the products - it is also encompassed by their partnerships with wholesale partners and their investment in the retail environment. NIKE's strategic alignment with consumer preferences further underlines their market positioning. The company's offerings command solid standing in running, basketball, fitness, and women's lifestyle categories, demonstrated by the full-price purchasing behaviour seen in new launches. The CEO's statement on the call encapsulates this aspect, emphasizing their aim to maintain an authentic connection with target consumers. Amid the talk of innovation and growth, CFO Matthew Friend provided some insight on the financial aspects of the company's future. He stated: "We expect to inflect in the second half and grow next year on the top line," revealing a measured yet optimistic outlook for Nike's projects and revenue growth. Looking ahead, NIKE intends to sustain their innovative approach and broaden the range of original products on offer. With a three-year pipeline in sight, primarily focusing on their Air platform and main franchises, they are gearing up for long-term growth and market relevance. Their commitment to enriching consumer value through retail environment, brand storytelling, and consumer experience enhancement is indicative of their philosophy. By enhancing their investments in design, product creation, and gaining market visibility, NIKE aims to steadily further its market position through strategic collaborations and customer-driven initiatives. In summary, while NIKE has projected a positive performance landscape for the future based on their announced strategies and ongoing efforts, the actual results will ultimately depend on changing market dynamics, efficiency in scaling innovations, and consumer reception.

These complaints have been happening since 2017-2018 but World Athletics did not give a more clear answer until January 2020.[5] The major changes of these guidelines state that the "sole must be no thicker than 40mm" and that "the shoe must not contain more than one rigid embedded plate or blade (of any material) that runs either the full length or only part of the length of the shoe. The plate may be in more than one part but those parts must be located sequentially in one plane (not stacked or in parallel) and must not overlap".[4] The components of the shoes are not the only thing that had major changes; starting April 30, 2020, "any shoe must have been available for purchase by any athlete on the open retail market (online or in store) for a period of four months before it can be used in competition".     1/1/2020 - The Nike Vaporfly Just Survived a Potential Ban World Athletics (track and field's governing body, formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations) made its highly anticipated announcement on the regulation of running shoe technology. Although there had been rumors in recent weeks—aggravated by several bogus news stories—that the organization was planning on making Nike's coveted Vaporfly Next% racing shoe illegal in elite competition, this does not appear to be the case.   Rather, World Athletics will be prohibiting the use of shoe prototypes in competition. (This is a good idea.) The new rule states: “From 30 April 2020, any shoe must have been available for purchase by any athlete on the open retail market (online or in store) for a period of four months before it can be used in competition. If a shoe is not openly available to all then it will be deemed a prototype and use of it in competition will not be permitted.”   Additionally, World Athletics has issued an “immediate moratorium” on any shoe that has a heel stack height of more than 40 millimeters and more than “one rigid embedded plate or blade (of any material).”   Placing a limit on sole thickness has been one of the proposed solutions on how to best regulate shoe technology going forward. The breakthrough innovation of Nike's original Vaporfly 4% shoe, released in 2017, was that it combined a carbon fiber plate with an unusually thick (over 30 millimeters) super lightweight Pebax foam midsole. Some fear that if this design development goes unchecked, racing shoes might veer towards the farcical; imagine future runners bounding along in airy platform shoes.   Make no mistake, the new 40-millimeter limit is not arbitrary. The maximum stack height of Nike's Vaporfly Next% is usually reported at around 36 millimeters, and therefore sneaks under the new threshold. However, the shoes that Eliud Kipchoge wore when he became the first man to run a marathon in under two hours last year in Vienna (code name: “AlphaFly”) are potentially well over the limit, although Nike has not provided any data since the shoe hasn't been released.    12/23/21 - World Athletics has approved new shoe rules and regulations for competition. The new rules have brought a major update to the future of the sport, as athletes will not be allowed to wear shoes that have over a 20mm stack height during competition. This rule is set to be implemented in November 2024, which is after the Paris Summer Olympics and the 2024 Diamond League season.   The previous rule was 20mm stack height for sprint and hurdle events up to 400m and 25mm for events 800m and above. The sport has seen a technological revolution in footwear over the past 10 years, but with new innovations come challenges to maintain a fair level of competition.     What's New in the 303:   How to help Boulder County fire victims Several organizations are collecting donations to help people affected by Thursday's devastating wildfire in Boulder County.   The Marshall Fire has destroyed more than 500 homes and burned more than 1,600 acres as of Thursday evening. Dr. Wouter Hoogkamer is the principle author of one of the most important pieces of running shoe research ever published. In 2018 his paper “A Comparison of the Energetic Cost of Running in MarathonRacing Shoes” was published in Sports Medicine, and for the first time revealed exactly what was going on with the Nike Vaporfly, the first of the so called Super Shoes,Wouter's story starts way before that though, and, it is one of the most interesting we have aired on SHOEphoria.Like Kevin Fallon from Speedland, Wouter started his professional and academic life as an engineer. Basically, the take home message from all of this is that being good at maths can turn you into a running shoe superstar!Wouter was a very accomplished scientist long before he started working on the Nike project. He found his niche in biomechanics, and developed a lifetime interest in, if not passion for, energetics. Initially this had nothing to dom with running shoes, but simply looked at the energetics of uphill running. This led him into several projects involving cycling, and then an important step into neurophysiology, trying to unravel some of the mysteries of stroke and Parkinson's Disease.Eventually Nike came knocking on his door, and Wouter began working on a project dedicated to the development of a shoe to take an athlete under 2 hours for the marathon. Working with another iconic researcher in Rodger Kram, bot scientists thought this achievement, if possible at all, was at least 5-10 years in the future.History has now recorded that on October 13th 2019, the great Eliud Kipchoge ran the marathon distance in 1:59:40.. in a Nike prototype shoe codenamed the Alphafly, that Wouter Hoogkamer helped to develop. Not a bad thing to have on your CV!Despite this, Wouter always felt like an “outsider looking in” in relation to Nike, and much of his subsequent understanding of how the Nike super shoes work has been achieved via reverse engineering, and without the assistance of Nike!Wouter has now moved from Colorado to Amherst, where he heads up the University of Massachusetts Integrative Locomotion Lab (UMILL) and is currently working on new projects with…. PUMA.Well, we cannot wait to see how that turns out!Wouter Hoogkamer on SHOEphoria, don't miss it!

He has been conducting running economy research regarding how people respond to a various number of the current super shoes, including the Alphafly, Vaporfly, Metspeed Sky, Rocket X, and Endorphin Pro (among others). They talk about the results of his current research (linked below), plans for future study, and recommendations for how different runners should (or shouldn't) use this date to inform their purchases for running shoes. They also go into his own personal experience in the shoes and how he has processed which shoes he likes most, which he calls his "LabRat" testing.  *please forgive the minor echoing noted when Dustin is speaking* For more information on Dustin Joubert PhD, his research, and how to support his upcoming work, check out the following links: Preprint Link: https://scholarworks.sfasu.edu/kinesiology/33/ Crowdfunding Link: https://graphite.sfasu.edu/impact-jacks/project/support-research-for-women-s-running-shoe-performance-at-sfa Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/labratrundown/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/doctors-of-running/support

The Nike Vaporfly and its descendants, the Next% and Alphafly, have revolutionized the running landscape. In recent years we have seen new world records set in the men's and women's 10k, half-marathon and marathon. Many other elite runners have set personal bests in the now-dubbed "super-shoes". We have multiple independent studies showing improvements in running economy of around 4% on average. With all the disruption, the IAAF has finally had to step in and update their regulations on running shoes. Now that these "super-shoes" are more widely available, the question on every runner's lips is "will they work for me?". Our guest today has been attempting to answer that question. Dr Hébert-Losier recently published a study in The Journal of Sport and Health Science in which she tested the Nike Vaporfly 4% on a group of recreational runners, like us! Kim Hébert-Losier is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Applied Biomechanics at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. She is also a Physiotherapist and an accomplished runner, having qualified for the Boston Marathon twice. She joins me on the show today to shed a little more light on what these "super-shoes" are, how they work and whether the Nike Vaporfly / Alphafly can really make you a faster runner. Jane went out to New York for what Nike were calling its 'Olympic Summit' but it turned out to be the global alphafly launch, so armed with her microphone she recorded this special episode, interviewing Tony Bignell, VP of footwear innovation and finding out what the latest ruling from World Athletics really means in relation to this shoe, what Nike are doing to meet the new rules and the greater implications to the sport. She then caught up with KJT and Dina Asher-Smith to discuss their preparation for Tokyo 2020.This was recorded at a live event so the audio in places is patchy.
