She is also someone whose name you will immediately recognise if you are a part of the Australian Legal Innovation and Technology community, where she has a super strong network.  Fiona spent 27 years of her legal career as a lawyer in both large and small firms. Then, in 2019 a shift happened, and she started steering her legal career towards consulting and technology.  In this episode, we explore that shift. We talk about how and why she opted out of the partnership track and how she embarked upon a very deliberate and brave path of career reinvention. We discuss:  The very sensible and conventional start to her legal career; Why she decided law firm partnership was not for her; How she embraced the “desert of reinvention” and claimed her space in the Australian legal tech ecosystem; How she built her strong personal brand and thought leadership, including how she wrote her brilliant book, the Tech Enabled Lawyer; Her thoughts on Chat GPT and what it is actually good for;  The definition of “tech evangelist” and “knowledge management” and ideas that anyone can implement in their own workplaces; And much more. I hope you enjoy this honest conversation and it helps open your eyes to the limitless possibilities as to where your legal career may take you.  You can find Fiona on Linked In here and check out McLay Legal Consulting at: https://www.mclaylegal.com/  and buy a copy of her brilliant Tech Enabled Lawyer at Booktopia here. The legal profession has, on the whole, been receptive to adopting new technologies for daily operations. Even among those who utilise tech, however, there remains an element of resistance to change — particularly if using a tech platform means giving over control over a given task, argues one lawyer. On this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with McLay Legal Consulting principal and consultant Fiona McLay about how prevalent technophobia is among Australian lawyers, why it is an issue for so many practitioners, what we mean by technophobia, and whether lawyers feel duty-bound to complete tasks as traditionally intended. Ms McLay also delves into the most common reasons for technophobia, whether the age of COVID-19 has reduced the number of lawyers who resist using various technologies, the practical steps that lawyers can take to overcome any resistance they may have, how best to undergo a mindset shift in terms of your daily operations, and her broader guidance for how and why lawyers can ensure they are prepared for the future of legal practice. Today's extended Talking PFAS News edition is discussing the use of firefighting foams containing PFAS in Tasmania. Primarily this episode focuses on the use of PFAS firefighting foams by the Tasmanian Fire Service (TFS). PFAS became an issue of focus during the recent State election in May. My guests today are journalist Rob Inglis from The Examiner and Advocate Newspapers in Hobart, and Sharon McLay who was a candidate for the Animal Justice Party in the recent election. Sharon also has a 30 year history of previously being a professional firefighter for the MFB in Victoria. Rob Inglis wrote some recent articles about PFAS foams in Tasmania after firefighters refused to use foams which contain PFAS. The United Firefighters Union have also shared their opinion with Rob Inglis and at a press conference (prior to the May State election) in Hobart. Today's episode also will include statements from AirServices and TasPorts regarding their use of firefighting foams containing PFAS or actions to remove them. In 2018 the Tasmanian EPA published a PFAS Action Plan for Tasmania, which was updated in August, 2019. This update provides a record of actions taken so far by TFS, Airservices and Tasports. In this episode, she reflects on the disproportionate impacts of the virus and explains why she believes that human rights are an integral part of the pathway out of the pandemic. 00.00-03.58 Todd begins by asking Alison to reflect on the idea of Covid-19 as a threat to democracy and human rights. Alison starts by talking about a citizenship gap, that is, people “out of place” physically, socially or in terms of status, for example: Refugees  Migrants Internally displaced people She argues that Covid-19 has intensified that threat, particularly for vulnerable groups who have become subject to increased levels of mobility tracking and surveillance. She refers to examples from Brazil, India and the treatment of Native Americans in the USA. 03.58-07.16 Todd moves on to discuss concerns around the way governments may be using the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse to restrict migration, human rights and curb civil liberties. Alison says the first step is to focus on the interdependence of human rights. She points out that vulnerable people are being made scapegoats during the pandemic deflecting attention away from the real issues. She points to a selective approach to some civil rights over others, referencing threats to property and economic activity as receiving the most push back in California, for example. 07.16-11.00 The discussion turns to the debate surrounding privacy rights - the ongoing debate in the UK around the requirement of vaccination passports, for travel, for example and how that might affect identity rights. Given that this will create individual digital footprints the question is how concerned should we be Todd asks? In Alison's view, that depends on the functioning of the health care system. In well-established systems for example, such as in Europe and the global North, it could be a problem but there are well established mechanisms for monitoring privacy. In most of the world, the situation is different. Access to this kind of health care does not exist. Health disparities and, therefore, a lack of, for example a Covid vaccination passport could create problems for: Those seeking employment Economic migrants Refugees seeking asylum Some countries stand out as Covid-19 champions, for example New Zealand and Taiwan where there have been increases in state power, but where there are mechanisms for control. 11.00-15.12 Todd asks about the notion of patriarchy and how it intersects with the pandemic. Alison identifies three areas: 1. Production  -Two/thirds of front-line workers are women and they have been disproportionately exposed to Covid-19.  - Female domestic workers comprise a large percentage of migrant labour and have been left vulnerable to the virus. 2. Public space. Governments have used concerns over social distancing and the spread of the virus to restrict peaceful assembly.  3. Reproduction. Many governments have taken advantage of the pandemic to limit access to reproductive health, for example contraception and abortion. USA and Poland are cited. 15.12-20.12 Todd points to a marked increase in reports of domestic abuse against women, during the pandemic. Alison refers to work carried out by UN Women, and the data that they have collected, and WomensStats, a project she works on. She finds: An increase of around 30% in reports of domestic violence globally The more severe the lockdown the higher the level of abuse The impacts relate not only to being physically locked in with the abuser but also in being unable to access support Examples are given from France and Spain where new ways have been developed for women to communicate and seek support where they are unable to make use of established support mechanisms. 20.12-end  The interview closes with Alison reflecting on the impact of the pandemic on her home state, California. Case rates are stabilising, with most areas going down through the tiers 25% of adults have had access to at least one dose of the vaccine. Some issues relating to the vaccination programme have been addressed Bottle-necks in the supply chain of the vaccine Issues re prioritization in terms of who was vaccinated Issues of distribution Evidence of pandemic fatigue especially on college campuses where compliance is low Elderly and middle-class communities have shown most compliance There has been resistance to vaccination in three areas A small number of neo liberal conservatives New age groups advocating alternative medicine Members of the Hispanic population, which makes up 40% of the population and are in the most vulnerable occupations although influential individuals within the community have been working to encourage the vaccine uptake Further reading The Future of Human Rights Alison Brysk, Polity Press, 2018 Why feminism is good for your health Alison Brysk and Miguel Fuentes Carreno, New Security Beat, 2020 A Pandemic of Gender Violence in the COVID Era   Audio discussion, The Wilson Center When “Shelter-in-Place” Isn't Shelter That's Safe: A Rapid Analysis of Domestic Violence Case Differences during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Stay-at-Home Orders. M. Jim was born and educated in Auckland completing a law degree in 1967. He worked for a period in the profession before entering public service and successfully standing for the New Zealand Parliament as a candidate for the NZ National Party in the Birkenhead electorate in 1975. A long-time member of the National Party organisation he was clearly seen as a future minister and leader and within three years of his election to Parliament he was appointed by Prime Minister Robert Muldoon to the posts of Attorney General – the youngest ever to hold the role – and Minister of Justice. Six years later he became deputy leader of the Party and Deputy Prime Minister. In that same year National lost power in a snap general election. Muldoon was seen to be out of touch by younger members of the party and was challenged for the leadership with our guest taking out the contest. In a difficult post Muldoon period there followed a further leadership challenge which he lost and our guest subsequently retired from Parliament in 1987. It was post Parliament that he began the most interesting period of his career working commercially in numerous board and advisory roles, serving as a permanent representative to the United Nations and winning a place for New Zealand on the Security Council of the organisation. He became New Zealand’s representative to the Palestinian Authority and acted as special advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has held and influenced at a national level through roles too numerous to mention. He has received recognition and honours for his public service that range from honorary doctorate to knighthood and, significantly, has a glacier in Antarctica that bears his name. This recognises his work on the International Whaling Commission – particularly his advocacy that led to the establishment of a whale sanctuary in the Southern Ocean.

From financial advisor to "accidental entrepreneur," Shannon McLay went all-in to launch The Financial Gym with a goal of making financial fitness fun and attainable for everyone. Learn how she has found passion, purpose, and happiness. Guest Biography Shannon McLay is a financial planner who left a "traditional" financial services firm to start her own company, The Financial Gym, because she felt traditional financial services firms did not have the tools or resources to help the everyday Jack and Jill who are trying to build assets while also managing debt. Through her blog, Financially Blonde, her book, Train Your Way To Financial Fitness, her podcast, Martinis and Your Money and her company, Shannon is committed to making financial fitness fun, easy and accessible for everyone. Meet Keith Dolby - Franchising Consultant/Adviser/Broker I love entrepreneurship – no surprises there, right!?! I also know that many, many small businesses fail within the first five years of operation. That’s a hard statistic to stomach. Failures happen for many reasons, and some of them include lack of systems in business, and the owner not knowing how to ‘get’ customers. Meet my friend, Keith Dolby. He’s a franchising expert and franchisee of two franchises in the UK. He’s also a franchising broker, working with people who want to be self employed and who explore franchising as a way of achieving the ‘self employment dream’. I’m fascinated with the concept of franchising. Yes, we all know the names of massive franchises in the market (McDonald’s, for instance), and yes, we’ve all heard the good, bad and ugly stories about franchising. But did you know there are about 1,000 different types of franchises in the UK and over 4,000 in the USA. Wow! It’s a huge market, in those two countries alone. In my interview with Keith, he offers lots of real insights into franchising in the UK and Europe, and how to mitigate the risk of buying into the wrong type of franchise for you, your skills and personality. There’s no doubt about it, franchising works, but buyer beware! Do your research thoroughly and work with experts. Let them guide you so that you can live your dream of successful self employment. Enjoy this week’s interview with Keith. Meet Mark Cottle - Entrepreneur, Accountant, Accountancy Profession 'Disruptor' Meet my Australian friend, Mark Cottle. He’s an accountant by profession and an entrepreneur at heart… and he’s combined the two to create a fantastic business that supports accountants in Australia and the UK to reduce the cost of their biggest overhead – staff. In this week’s interview, Mark talks openly about how he has substantially developed his Australian accounting practice by thinking outside the box. As a result, how he now helps many other accounting practices operate their businesses like his. And the great thing is they are more successful and profitable. Everything is changing at a rapid rate in business. Successful businesses of the future will embrace technology and new ways of thinking in order to serve their customers. There are no sacred cows. The accountancy profession is no different. Failure to change and evolve with the times will mean businesses get left behind. Mark’s staffing model works for lots of industries, not just the accountancy profession. I’m thinking about it for one of my businesses too. Exciting times. I hope you enjoy this week’s interview with my ‘Aussie mate’, Mark. :) Enjoy! Adèle McLay is a business and personal success strategist, coaching her entrepreneur clients around the world for more than 20 years toward her vision of “Soulful Vitality.” She declares, “Each of us should be sizzling in business and life, but too many of us are only simmering. It concerns me whenever I hear someone say, ‘I’ll be happy when...or if,’ because when they get it, they just go on to want the next thing. They're never happy. My view is, we create happiness in the moment, in the now. If we choose happiness now, everything will change.”
