Yugen Blakrok & Kanif The Jhatmaster - "Pedestal," a 2022 single on I.O.T. Records. Hailing from the Eastern Cape, rapper Yugen Blackrok shot to stardom with her 2013 debut album Return of the Astro-Goth, landing three nominations in the South African Hip-Hop Awards for Best Lyricist, Best Newcomer, and Best Female Artist. Here in the States, she was a stand-out on 2018's Black Panther: The Album, appearing on the track "Opps" alongside heavy-hitters Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples. Earlier this year, she returned with the single "Pedestal," which finds her reunited with long-time producer Kanif the Jhatmaster. In a press release, she states: Concepts. Idols. Civilizations. We build and we destroy. ‘Pedestal' is about building oneself and breaking the mould. Growing, expanding and still remaining true to the spark. The pedestal is a physical framework for the senses. Civilization after civilization, it carries the weight of great symbols and the foundation of cultural and social edifices. Star power was everywhere to update you guys on this week! It was definitely a weekend for "Wakanda". Opening weekend for Marvel’s Black Panther has come and gone and after all has been said, done, and counted, it’s only right that for Black History Month the movie made history. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Coogler’s new classic is estimated to be grossing a cool $404 million worldwide with $201.8 mil coming domestically for the three-day President’s Day weekend. After only three days a movie with a $200 million dollar budget is already in the black. Gotta love it! In related news, Rapper Kendrick Lamar is celebrating after helping Black Panther: The Album leap to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Black love, pride and star power is everywhere. It appears Young Thug is borrowing a page from the Sean Combs/Puff Daddy/Diddy playbook. The Atlanta rhymer announced on Twitter that he wants to be referred to by another name - "SEX"? Why am I not surprised. Toni Braxton finally confirmed what we already knew – that the “Unbreak My Heart” singer is engaged to dirty south music mogul Bryan Christopher Williams, a.k.a. Birdman. If Braxton is happy, then I am happy for her. And I look forward to hearing how “Bryan” has been phenomenal to her when the new season of Braxton Family Values premieres on WeTV in March. This weekend Fergie sang the National Anthem for the NBA All Star game. Y’all know Fergie she always puts her own unique spin on performances. And her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” was no exception. This time she opted for a sultry, jazzy feel. Despite what seemed like real effort on her part, it just didn’t go over that well. The crew also had a very HOT segment topic to discuss..check it out! Until next week...

Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, Jorja Smith, The Weeknd and many others bring a fictional African nation to life — a place whose culture is both deeply spiritual and known for being the most technologically advanced on Earth. Black Panther: The Album blends different genres and emotional motivations to duplicate that dichotomy, mostly to great effect. An album review by Greg Whitt.Learn more about your ad choices.
