Breaking Atoms: The Hip Hop Podcast

For our first full episode of 2025, we're taking a detour. In June 2021, we released our first narrative series detailing Jay-Z's creation of 'Reasonable Doubt'. We did over 50+ interviews, and the last one we did for the series was with DJ Clark Kent. After his tragic passing in 2024, we've decided to share the FULL UNEDITED interview with you, which was a candid chat with one of Hip-Hop's most significant contributors and creatives. We sounded like amateurs because we were a little giddy when speaking to one of our Hip-Hop heroes. Across 90 minutes, God's Favourite DJ shares stories about Jay-Z, Jaz-O, Sauce Money, details of unreleased tracks from the 'Reasonable Doubt' sessions, classic albums, and more. To close, he shares why Hip-Hop culture needs to cultivate itself from within.Whatever you do, make sure you call him DJ CLARK KENT.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagramFacebookTwitterFollow SumitInstagramTwitterFollow ChrisInstagramTwitter Hosted on Acast. Jaz-O (@TheRealJazO) has been a mainstay in the music industry for over 30 years. The Marcy Houses, Brooklyn born and raised rap legend has initiated the careers of Jay-Z, Irv Gotti, Sauce Money, The Lox, Chad Elliott, and Memphis Bleek to name a few. Recalling his first rhyme at the age of 14, he had co-written and produced his first record, "HP Gets Busy" at the age of 21. This song featured his 16 year old “partner in crime”, Jay-Z and friends, Easy LD (E. Ward) and Almond Joy (J. Ward). In 1986 Jaz-O teamed up with music producer Fresh Gordon to create the answer to RUN DMC's "My Adidas" with "My Fila". The young songwriter-MC/producer continued his reign of terror in the streets, destroying challengers in MC battles local and abroad. In 1989 Jaz-O blasted onto the mainstream media with his debut single, "Hawaiian Sophie", and a debut feature on The O'Jays number one single "Have You Had Your Love Today?” Jaz-O was the first rap artist ever signed to EMI Records. He released two albums and an EP from 1989-1991. Along with Prince Paul, The Large Professor, and Mark The 45 King, Jaz produced several records for his projects. After taking a hiatus in 1992, Jaz-O re-emerged in ‘96 producing the Jay-Z classic "Ain't No Nigga”. Jaz continued his string of production classics for Jay-Z including "In My Lifetime-The Big Jaz Remix", "Rap Game-Crack Game", and featured on Jay-Z cuts "Bring It On" and "Nigga Who? Nigga What?” Producer of the demo that landed The Lox their deal with Bad Boy, Jaz-O has arranged for the likes of Puffy, Rakim, M.O.P., Foxy Brown, Queen Latifah, Kool G Rap and numerous others. But Jaz is most well known for his 'triplet style' of rhyming, which he is majestically titled "The Originator". In the third episode of WASH THIS!, Scoop, Roddy, & Ovid The Poet added some more flavor to the mix (literally) as the guests that were invited to witness the episode live were treated to dinner provided by Sol Sazon, a local restaurant owned by Ovid The Poet's family. Of course everything was WASHED down with Henny & Ginger Ale so even the serious topics came off as hilarious. The guys talked about Kodak Black and how he's unsuccessfully courting rapper Young M.A. and supposedly punched rapper Sticky Fingaz due to his "old head energy". They also gave DMX much respect and talked about how they were first introduced to his music. Other topics ranged from Sauce Money's interview with DJ Vlad, to the sound a certain gun makes in Goldeneye 007 on N64. This is probably a classic episode, but it's hard to tell since there's only 2 others. ENJOY! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/washthis/support

The Boom Bap Collection. Either good hip hop mixes are hard to come by these days or I just don't know where to look! Hip hop was/is my first musical love, and I've been on the lookout for good hip hop mixes for years - they only seem to pop up now and again through someone's diligent Soundcloud scouring or from a house DJ going for something different. So a hip hop mix was naturally the first thing that sprung to mind when I was asked to do a podcast for musicforfriends. I've put together a collection of tracks from some of my favourite producers and MC's - some you will have heard before, some you won't. Even though this selection isn't technically inspired by him, the mix is dedicated to a great friend of mine: Michael Russell aka Russ. Russ is a guy who literally eats, sleeps and breathes tunes. He's someone who I can always go to with anything music related and one of my biggest musical inspirations, as it were. Anyway, this mix was done with the car/bus/train in mind, starting off slow and building all the way through…a journey through the world of real hip hop as I see it. Hopefully you'll enjoy these classics as much as I do. This was recorded in front of a live audience after a practice run - no edits ;-) Happy listening! Jaz-O is an emcee and record producer active in the late 1980s through the 1990s, best known for being the mentor of Jay-Z. Jaz is also known as the Originator and had a song called "The Originators" that featured a young Jay-Z in 1990. As The Jaz, he had success with his 1989 single "Hawaiian Sophie" from his debut album Word to the Jaz. He has been featured on some of Jay-Z's songs, (such as "Bring it On" from Reasonable Doubt), "Ain't No Ni**a", and the single "Ni**a What, Ni**a Who (Originator 99)" from Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life, where he was credited as Big Jaz. He also produced the single "Ain't No Ni**a" from Reasonable Doubt and the song "Rap Game/Crack Game" from In My Lifetime, Vol. 1. The album "Kingz Kounty (2002) - with The Immobilarie Present" marked the last time Jay-Z and mentor Jaz-O would ever collaborate. Besides being an emcee, he has produced songs for several hip hop artists other than Jay-Z, such as Group Home, M.O.P, Ras Kass, Rakim, Kool G Rap and others. The long standing feud between him and Jay-Z started when Jay-Z started Roc-A-Fella Records and he tried to convince Jaz-O and fellow rapper Sauce Money to sign with the label. They both refused. It is rumored that they didn't trust Roc-A-Fella records CEOs Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. In addition, they weren't satisfied with what they were to be receiving had they signed the contract, 300,000 dollars in Jaz-O's case.

Far from a gentle interview, this gloves-off 30 minute feature-length explores Khan's controversial views on the media's pre-fight coverage, the real reason that Tim Bradley backed out of a confrontation with him and a direct analysis at why Sky Sports have turned their back on him; an issue which Khan and his camp are taking very personally. In addition to boxing we address Amir Khan's struggle with the US "crack down on terror" laws, including his unjustified struggles with US immigration and explore his brushes with Holylwood stars such as Mickey Rourke. One of the most personal Amir Khan interviews to date and an interview that no boxing fan or media journalist should miss. Canibus and his producer partner The Architect step once more into the Conspiracy studios to offer a detailed exploration of the making of all three CDs of Bis' new album Lyrical Law, including the creation of each track, the story behind guest features and the overall purpose of this album in Canibus' career. We discuss the importance of the "mixer" community and future plans to showcase more of their dedicated work as well as learning the origins and foundations of Canibus' first group in 1993, T.H.E.M. Moving onto the EXCLUSIVE PODCAST ONLY content. we travel through all of Canibus' future projects including the making of RTJ2, the Sharpshooterz album, Paranoid Chillin and of course, the forthcoming HRSMN project. We talk Lyrical Law Tour, including proposed destinations should the resources and circumstances permit and then tackle the recent media coverage of Canubus' music, including the inclusion in UK newspaper The Guardian. A massively rewarding listen, with the only sad/concerning part being Canibus' frank statements on his eventual retirement from making music. Hip Hop must listen once more. Ever the optimist and leading light, the legendary DJ Premier steps into the arena to hang out, reflecting and remembering the late, great Guru, sharing tons of Gangstarr stories, some of which include Gangstarr's legacy, the first time Gangstarr made it to radio, recording a "Moment Of Truth", play fights and his future plans, which include a forthcoming DVD with unseen footage. Further expanding on Guru, we are shared with such gems as Guru being responsible for Lord Finesse getting signed, the science behind his label Ill Kid Records, porn conventions stifling thier later relationship and more. We also talk Premier's radio show Live From HeadQCourterz, working with DJ J-S1, the status of his track "Fu*k The Industry" with Immortal Technique, meeting Eminem for the first time (he says that he's finished the remix to Bad Meet Evil's "Writer's Block", describing it as being "different" and "almost a rock record"), plans of working with Guilty Simpson, the status of "Return Of The Boom-Bip", the result of a track with Game entitled "Born In The Trap", which he describes Game as sounding like an "old Nas" and reveals an album with E-40 where he will be splitting half the album's production with 40's son Droop-E. In addition, we talk "choking porn" and his attempts to avoid writing a book because of what he knows behind closed doors. A fully-fledged Conspiracy Worldwide Radio classic! Insane Clown Posse's Violent J smashes the door off the Conspiracy Worldwide Radio studio with news of one of the most epic festivals in hip hop history; The Gathering of the Juggalos 2011. We talk in detail about the evolution of the Juggalo family, including the extreme awe that floods ICP when they contemplate the enormous devotion expressed by their fans. With a performance roster ranging from artists like Ice Cube and Xzibit, right through to legends such as Above The Law and DJ Quik, The Gathering of the Juggalos Festival sounds like a dream card for any discerning fan of hip hop and hardcore. Violent J divulges some of the artists he still wants to feature on a future festival, including MC Ren, a Geto Boys live reunion and a show with every member of the Wu Tang Clan on stage. We talk in-depth about the development of ICP's wrestling corporation JCW and take time to recognise the monumental influence of wrestling guru and brazen genius, Paul Heyman. Far from the chaos of their artistic image, this interview demonstrates the down-to-earth and ultimately likable nature of ICP's admirable hustle. Juggalos spread this one!  M.O.P's Billy Danze is in warrior mode as he steps into the ring that is the Conspiracy studio to discuss his forthcoming boxing reality TV show, as well as Amir Khan's showdown with his childhood friend Zab Judah. In this knock-out interview with one of Hip Hop's greatest heavy weights, we discuss the creation of his currently untitled reality show, touching on its inspiration, development and long-term goals, with an often overlooked message that boxers are some of the nicest people. In addition, we discuss the much anticipated forthcoming M.O.P album that will be entirely produced by the Snowgoons, as well as the status of Lil Fame and Termanology's Fizzyology project and much more! Standing on the tip of mainstream stardom, we are joined by the mental giant that is Aaron Yates, better known to the world as Tech N9ne. The mood is accomplished and Tech is set to attend a signing with his fans, better known in his world as the Technicians, but before that we talk "All 6's and 7' s" and it's creation and success, growing lyrically, the science behind the album title, having a newfound energy and inspiration in beats, "The Gates Mixed Plate" receiving "mixed" criticism, his hair cut, body branding, collaborating with Lil Wayne, Kabosh, touring, the revelation of a forthcoming Regime album and more, proving that he is the very definition of, and a display of the power of, a cult audience. A must hear for Technicians and casual fans of Tech N9ne. Having already paid dues, former Ranjahz member Wais P's come up and existence isn't Random. His refreshing and dope new project "Random Pimp" however could be deemed as this and that's not a bad thing! In this overdue interview, we talk to the pimp about "Random Pimp's" formulation and Random Axe's initial inspiration, jokes with Duckdown CEO Dru-Ha about not selling the project, previous projects, his evolution as an artist, his personal favourite track to date "Back Bi*ches" with Sauce Money, collaborations, working with DJ Premier, forthcoming music which includes a project with himself, Maffew Ragazino and Action Bronson and much more! Wais P is the future. AND THAT'S NOT ALL! Mista Montana and Menace take a RARE look at this week's music submissions, selecting the very best tracks to add substance to what was an enormous investigation, as well as updating listeners on the Ghost Hunters TAPS team's latest attempts to take them off air for good. STREAM or DOWNLOAD On this seven hour death match with Mista Montana and Menace we have: WBA Super World Light-Welterweight Champion Amir Khan joins us on the eve of his unification title fight with Zab Judah, to deliver a frank and explicit interview regarding his mind state as he approaches the first round bell.
