After six weeks of practice and the Blue-White Game, where do players stand within their position heading into the summer months of player-led training? We're looking at the key positions heading out of spring football on today's BWI Live. Join the show at 10 am on YouTube or check out the replay here, embedded in this article. Penn State offensive breakdown There's little change with the team's top two positions on offense. Quarterback Drew Allar played the majority of the team's starting reps, with backup Beau Pribula taking two series with the top offensive line and receivers. But what about the position battle at running back? Penn State's young players put on a show this spring, and despite missing time, freshman Quinton Martin showed impressive skill in the Blue-White Game. We'll discuss where the battle for the third running back spot is between Martin and Cam Wallace. Unlike running back, wide receiver is a much messier and more complicated picture. Why was transfer Julian Fleming on the Blue Team? What can we make of the team's performance from this spring? We'll discuss how Penn State has generally used its wide receivers from a positional perspective and then discuss how a team makes them positionless within an offense. Tight End gives an incomplete picture How Penn State plans to use its tight ends is very different than what we saw during the Blue-White Game. However, we have some clues about where the competition stands on Saturday for the backup job to starter Tyler Warren. Finally, we'll try to explain how Penn State used its offensive linemen, specifically in relation to freshman Cooper Cousins. Will he play center or guard this year and what led to him starting at right guard during the Blue-White Game? We'll dive into the offensive line performance from this spring. Penn State Defense Lastly, we'll look at the Penn State defense and what sort of competition the team has at linebacker and cornerback. Will the team play just two linebackers this year? If so, how does veteran Dom DeLuca fit into that picture? We'll also discuss Ta'Mere Robinson's performance during the Blue-White game and where the defensive line will find room for five pass rushers in the lineup. Join the show today at 10 am to hear all of that and more! #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Post-Spring Penn State Football Positional Review Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State offensive and defensive scheme notes While a good chunk of Saturday's game was vanilla on both sides of the football, Penn State still showed some interesting wrinkles. Both defensive coordinator Tom Allen and offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki gave us a glimpse of different aspects of their new schemes. We'll discuss the level of aggression Allen showed during the scrimmage and what Kotelnicki did and didn't do during the 48 minutes of game action. We'll also discuss the situation at receiver and which players stood out during the team's passing plays. Did we get a sense of who will fill in for KeAndre Lambert-Smith among the team's wideouts? We'll discuss Trey Wallace's performance and that of Kaden Saunders and Liam Clifford. Finally, we'll discuss the quarterbacks, Drew Allar's performance, and how to gauge what we learned about them during a windy day. Penn State running back competition continues Penn State's top running backs, Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, didn't play during the Blue-White game. That means we got an extended look at freshman Quinton Martin and redshirt freshman Cam Wallace. We'll discuss what those two players showed us on Saturday and how competitive the third running back competition will be this summer and fall. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Who Stood out in the Penn State Blue-White Game? | Takeaways from Saturday Learn more about your ad choices. How will all of that shake out? With the shift to new Penn State offensive coordiantor Andy Kotelnicki, is there a way to mitigate the loss of tackles Olu Fashanu and Caedan Wallace? Penn State scheme could help mitigate the loss of Olu Fashanu Earlier this week, we discussed the concept of working around the team's new tackle situation with first-time starters Drew Shelton and Anthony Donkoh or Nolan Rucci by leaning into what Kotelnicki did best at Kansas: run the football. Successfully deploying the ground game keeps the team out of obvious passing situations, which was the strength of Fashanu. But what if you didn't need those skills the same way? We've talked about this previously, but true passing situation opportunities can heavily influence the perception of a player's skills. Last year, Fashanu saw 142 of PFF's true passing situation blocks in Penn State's run-first scheme, which equated to 57th among all Power Five tackles. But Kansas had even fewer of those plays. Kansas left tackle Dominic Puni played in as many games as Fashanu and only had to block 86 times in obvious passing situations, which is tied for 122nd. Check out the rest of the article here. Penn State running back depth After discussing the offensive line and depth, we move on to the running back position. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen are Penn State's offensive focal points. But if the team regularly uses both of them, they will need depth assurances for injury. We look into how Quinton Martin and Cam Wallace will compete for the third and fourth running back jobs behind the starters. Is there a path to the field for the freshman? We discuss Martin's receiving ability and what a role for the 6-1 freshman would look like this season. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Can Penn State scheme around the loss of Olu Fashanu? | O-Line spring outlook Learn more about your ad choices. The former 2,000 yard rusher signed with penn State in December. So what was that moment like?  "It was just a dream come true, really. I mean, I worked my butt off for it. Everybody around me, I appreciate them. They got me where I wanted to be, so I just need to finish out and get there.  But soon, the conversation turns to the injury. What was going through Montgomery's mind when it happened? Montgomery didn't hold back about how he felt after the injury.  "I just felt empty when I found out that I tore my ACL because I wouldn't expect that to happen to me, and it can happen to anyone. So I was just so heartbroken from it.  You know, I just looked passed it. I can't look back. I got my mental right first and foremost, and then so now I'm working on my physical. So you know, I took it as it is and just went forward," he said Penn State added a running back to his class after the injury.  Montgomery also addressed the situation at running back in the Class of 2023. Does he feel uncomfortable that the team added another running back after his injury? He and T-Frank discuss Montgomery's conversations with running back's coach JaJuan Seider after the team added three-star runner Cam Wallace in December.  They also discuss how Penn State reacted to the news and how the injury allowed him to spend more time with the team this fall in Happy Valley.  Learn more about your ad choices. New Zealand-based company MediaWorks intends to lay off up to 90 staff in an attempt to cut costs, according to an internal email from chief executive Cam Wallace. In the email Wallace said two-thirds of the company's costs were labour related, and the impact of inflationary pressures plus a likely recession this year meant costs had be reduced. In a statement to RNZ, a spokesperson said MediaWorks staff had been given "an update on a period of business change we are about to embark on". "We have unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to review our operating model and reduce our workforce by up to 90 roles [this includes a significant number of vacant roles]." So what might this mean for the country's media scene?  Producer and presenter of RNZ's MediaWatch Colin Peacock spoke to Corin Dann.

The pandemic put unbearable pressure on New Zealand's media this year, but also saw it gain larger and more engaged audiences than ever before. In a year-ending monopod, Duncan Greive wraps his head around what it all means.I've tried to capture the sweep of this incredible year by drilling into the news organisations, journalists and other players in the ecosystem. Broadly it felt like a year in which, under some of the most extreme duress imaginable, journalism rediscovered its purpose, and both the public and government felt that too. So for an hour I went solo, taking the monopod format and going deep on the following topics:Google and Facebook's epic battle with Australian regulators, and what that means for New Zealand.Sinead Boucher and Stuff's triumphant year, from buying the company for $1 to the historic apology and everything in between – while still having questions over its future. The contrasting strategy of NZME, which is clearly more focussed on business than editorial at this point. The continued rollercoaster that is Sky, which started the year by buying Lightbox and ended it by losing its CEO (while gaining a very promising new one).A holding pattern for RNZ, which tried to change and found New Zealand's most powerful NIMBYs camped on its lawn.TVNZ deftly using its dominance to huge advantage – owning the local space, becoming the unquestioned winner of the free VOD platforms and positioning itself to be the main player in the suddenly-back-on RNZ/TVNZ merger.A series of coups for Mediaworks, selling the TV arm to Discovery and installing Air NZ's Cam Wallace as CEO of the new radio and outdoor company. The unexpected vitality of the indie media space after the collapse of Bauer. It's all hyper-nerdy, but if you are, tragically for you, into this sort of thing, then there's a solid hour of me talking at you about this heart attack year for our media. Merry Christmas, I guess? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Air New Zealand cannot afford to offer refunds to everyone impacted by flight cancellations during the Covid-19 outbreak without dipping into its $900m government loan, Air New Zealand's chief revenue officer Cam Wallace told Checkpoint on Wednesday. Following the interview Checkpoint was inundated with feedback from listeners. Many said they do not think they will be able to travel again, or to the destination they had originally booked. Other listeners said they cannot see their credit and do not want credit in the names of people who will not be able to fly again. One Air New Zealand customer, Alexa Bell, was forced to shell out hundreds of dollars for new flights even though she has thousands in credit with the airline. After Covid-19 scuppered Bell's international trip Air NZ refunded the section of her flights through America, but gave her a credit for the remaining $2000-worth. She told Checkpoint while she would have preferred all her money back, she decided to take the government advice and support local business by shouting her family a trip to Queenstown using the Air NZ credit. But things quickly got complicated.

Air New Zealand is saying sorry, but the severity of its financial situation means it simply cannot afford to refund everyone without dipping into its $900 million government loan facility. The airline says post-Covid-19 it is carrying hundreds of thousands of credits for cancelled or deferred flights, or trips customers simply cannot take. It has refunded flights to or through the US and anywhere else it will not fly again, like Buenos Aires. But everyone else gets credits, and that has caused a huge customer backlash from - with many people saying they are facing tough financial times too and need the cash back. Consumer NZ has repeated asked the national carrier to show some fairness and make exceptions to its policy. But to put things in perspective Air NZ says last April it carried 1.4 million passengers, this April it was just 15,000. Lisa Owen spoke to Air NZ chief revenue officer Cam Wallace and started by asking whether Air NZ has the financial resources to give a refund to everyone who wants one.

Justin Tighe-Umbers: Are Air New Zealand to blame for increase in domestic fares?

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Air New Zealand has released figures showing it has sold one million domestic airfares for less than $50 in the past year, a day after the body representing airports pointed to an 8.5 per cent overall increase in last 12 months.Inflation data showed airfares had increased 12 per cent in the last quarter.Airports New Zealand says the 12-month increase coincided with Jetstar's withdrawal from regional routes and the impact of an agreement between Air New Zealand and Qantas to co-operate in each other's domestic markets.Airports NZ chief executive Kevin Ward said the price increase means every domestic passenger was paying $14 more for their flight, on average, compared with the same period 12 months ago."Families, businesses and tourism will be the losers from the big jump in flight costs," said Ward."Increased fares translate directly to fewer people able to travel".Air New Zealand dropped lead-in fares to boost domestic demand when the market softened early last year. It also pledged to hold lead-in fares for a year at levels sold on Jetstar regional routes which the Qantas subsidiary pulled out of at the end of last year.It reduced its lowest fares on 41 domestic routes in February 2019, reducing some by up to 50 per cent. This meant some fares between the North Island and South Island fell as low as $39.Air NZ chief revenue officer Cam Wallace said the response to the reduction to the airline's lowest fares has been fantastic."When we announced this overhaul in February last year, we committed to making three quarters of a million seats a year available for less than $50. It's terrific to have well and truly surpassed this and to hit the one million milestone.''About 600,000 of these fares sold for under $50 have been for flights on regional routes, said Wallace. He said the airline "remained committed'' to low fares but advised passengers to book early to get the best possible deals.Airports and airlines are lobbying the government over changes to the Civil Aviation Act, with airports worried about proposals that could change the way they set prices.Ward said according to his organisation's calculations, the leap in domestic airfares will cost passengers an extra $165 million for a full year."Domestic air fare increases on this scale are many times greater than the rate of inflation, and have a choking effect on regions at a time the Government is investing in provincial economies," he said. There was no official data on fares for individual routes, so it was difficult to tell if some cities and towns have been harder hit than others. The body representing airlines operating here, the Board of Airline Representatives, said NZ airports had fired double-barrelled shots across airlines' wings.Executive director of BARNZ, Justin Tighe-Umbers, said domestic airfares have increased, but it was a verifiable fact that airlines are under cost pressure."Jet fuel prices have steadily climbed by around a third since 2017 and costs for air navigation and CAA services are rising. Airfares rise in response to cost increases. "Tighe-Umbers also said it is just scaremongering by NZ Airports to say New Zealand's regional airports are put at risk by the Government's proposal to remove a clause in the CAA legislation that allows airports to "charge as they think fit"."On the contrary, airlines want regional airports to invest for growth in terminals and services – and they have shown they're willing to fund investment," he says"We've seen this recently with new terminals and upgrades at airports in Nelson, New Plymouth and Tauranga."Changing the legislation should not change the commercial model between airports and airlines. Airports will continue to be able to negotiate freely with airline customers," he said.
