The sport and sports betting communities got together this week for the first time since 2019 as the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, and McLaren Global Sport Solutions hosted the Symposium on Match Manipulation and Gambling in Sport at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. Canadian Gaming Association president/CEO Paul Burns joined the Gaming News Canada Show presented by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP to provide a summary of the happenings from the two-day conference of panels, keynote addresses and collaboration by both communities to educate athletes and other participants in sport about the realities involved around match fixing and corruption. Nic Sulsky of PointsBet Canada, a partner of Curling Canada, and Kris Abbott of Betano also weighed in on the cooperation between sportsbooks and sports bodies to educate athletes, coaches and others. Paul Burns joined the show to summarize the happenings from this week's Symposium on Competition Manipulation and Gambling in Sport, co-hosted by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, and McLaren Global Sport Solutions. During the symposium, the International Betting Integrity Agency – with support from FanDuel, Betway and bet365 – announced a $300,000 commitment over the next three years to fund an education program for athletes and other participants in Canadian sport about betting, match-fixing and other matters around integrity in sport. The CCES put out a news release Friday that the main takeaway from the symposium and its participants was “identifying the need for a coordinated pan-Canadian approach to prevent competition manipulation that is bolstered by comprehensive education”. “The symposium highlighted the fact that Canadian sport needs a plan to address the threat of competition manipulation now before it gets a stronger foothold in Canada,” said Jeremy Luke, the president and CEO of the CCES. “A harmonized, pan-Canadian competition manipulation policy developed with athletes that includes comprehensive education and is administered by an independent organization would be consistent with best practices from sport and other countries, and would contribute to a safer environment for athletes and support personnel. “The CCES is committed to working with partners, including athletes, to make it a reality.” The podcast also set the table for next Wednesday's What's Next for iGaming Regulation in Canada? webinar presented by GBG Plc and featuring a panel with the aforementioned Brewer, Rebekah Jackson from GBG, PointsBet Canada CEO Scott Vanderwel, and legal beagle Jack Tadman of GME Law. On Oct. 10, 2012, almost 10 years ago, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) released its reasoned decision, a comprehensive investigation into doping by Lance Armstrong and other members of the U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel cycling teams. The document brought charges against Armstrong and supported USADA's call to strip Armstrong of his results, including his seven Tour de France wins. The reasoned decision sent reverberations up to this side of the U.S./Canada border. Michael Barry provided USADA with a signed affidavit detailing his doping practices during his career. In this episode, former president of Cycling Canada John Tolkamp looks back at the volatility in cycling 10 years ago and how he struggled with the information that was coming to light, officially. He also speaks about his organization's attempts to clean up the sport. Tolkamp is both an insider in the world of cycling, but also a cycling fan who was working his way through tough revelations about Barry and, later, Ryder Hesjedal.

Lecce in B, Genoa salvo. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

On behalf of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Margo Mountjoy on psychological injury and abuse in sport LIVE from the IOC World Conference in Monaco. Dr. Mountjoy is a member of the IOC medical commission, FINA executive board member, and associate clinical professor at McMaster University. She explores the various types of harassment, how it can occur, and what safeguards can be put in place to help athletes report abuse. In this episode, we discuss: -What form does psychological abuse and injury take in the world of sports? -How psychological abuse persists with the use of social media for the millennial generation -How competitive sport culture can enable abuse -The role healthcare professionals can play in preventing abuse -Signs and symptoms of psychological and sexual abuse -And so much more! One of the key risks for psychological injury and abuse to occur is when “there is a differential in power relationships.” The differential of power could be due to differences in a variety of factors including age, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or athletic ability which leads to the harassment and abuse. The advent of social media has led to more persistent forms of abuse which are carried off the field and into everyday life. With social media, there is no physical escape from the abuse and Dr. Mountjoy believes, “There is always someone that is ready to criticize.” Psychological injury and abuse in sport is not unique to any one sport or region and global resources are available through Dr. Mountjoy’s research and the IOC to help combat this problem. In our roles as coach, support team or therapist, Dr. Mountjoy stresses, “Each and every one of us in sport has the ability to stop this. But not only the ability, we have the responsibility.” One of the challenges of helping athletes is that, “Most athletes do not talk about their abuse while they are in sport because the process of abuse often silences the athlete. We see time and time again that we learn about harassment and abuse after they have retired.” However, healthcare providers have unique opportunities to engage athletes as impartial healers and provide support both physically and mentally. For more information on Dr. Mountjoy: Margo received her medical education and her family medicine training at McMaster University, Canada and her sports medicine specialty degree in Ottawa, Canada. Margo has worked as a community sports medicine physician in the Health & Performance Centre at the University of Guelph since 1988 where she has focused her practice on promoting elite athlete care and physical activity promotion in the general population. In addition, Margo has acted as the national team physician for Synchro Canada for 20 years as well as for the National Endurance Training Centre Athletes (middle and long distance track athletes) and the National Triathlon & Wrestling team training centres. Margo is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Family Medicine in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University, Canada where she teaches sports medicine and is the Director of Student & Resident Affairs. Margo is a member of the FINA Executive Board and holds the portfolio of Sports Medicine. She is also the Chair of the ASOIF Medical Consultative Group and a member of the IOC Medical Commission Games Group. Margo sits on the TUE committees of the IOC, WADA and CCES as well as the USADA and World Rugby Anti-doping Review Boards. Margo’s areas of research focus on elite athlete health and safety.
