I got a message from a subscriber of my channel named Susi Quintana. She graciously corrected one of the tongue exercises on one of my sleep apnea and snoring videos and opened my eyes to the world of myofunctional therapy. Since then, I have sent patients her way and bounce information off of her on a regular basis. What I do with my throat opening and tongue and mouth exercising videos can help a lot of people but it is not tailored to a specific person with a specific diagnosis related to breathing, snoring, being tongue tied, etc. So, there is Susi who evaluates online and takes someone through a journey through this important part of your physiology. Breathing, sleeping, even having a 60 year old be able to roll her tongue for the first time are some of the benefits I have seen myofunctional therapy accomplish. Myofunctional therapy helps people with tongue thrust, snoring, sleep apnea, swallowing problems, dental issues and even asthma, allergies, acid reflux, bruxism (clenching your teeth) and TMJ issues. It concentrates on objective measurement and resulting oral facial muscle and tongue therapy. We don't think too much about fine tuning our tongues but it can make a difference that gives benefits for the rest of our lives. When I use myofunctional therapists, I have them work with me as I adjust the cranial bones using endonasal cranial adjusting, apply lasers on the soft palate for snoring, do posture correction, TMJ therapy and other therapies that may, also, involve a dentist that specializes in maxilla expansion and other corrective therapies for the mouth. Susi Quintana is a Registered Dental Hygienist of over 20 years. She is also a Certified Orofacial Myologist (or COM) through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (or IAOM). She is the first certified myofunctional therapist with a dental background in Houston, and the 5th in the entire state of Texas. She has her own myofunctional therapy business in the Houston, TX area – but provides virtual therapy as well – which means she can provide therapy to anyone anywhere. She got into myofunctional therapy after facing airway and sleep concerns with her daughter and talks about this journey with us on the podcast. Dentistry and medicine go together! After over 30 years seeing patients and impacting lives as a dental hygienist, Cheryl Shafer has changed her professional path and is now a Certified Orofacial Myologist focusing on airway, breathing, and tongue function. In this candid conversation, Cheryl addresses her burnout as a hygienist and thoughts for how we should measure the worth of our hygienists, discusses new services we should include in regular exams, and wants us all to remain focused on “The mission that we have is the health and welfare of our patients.” As practice owners and healthcare providers, our roles continue to evolve regarding what we should be doing for our patients. Cheryl believes that dental offices should be viewed as any other medical specialists treating patients; a dentist is a member of an individual's medical team. So, it is critical that the care that can and should be given in dental visits is well known. Some of these issues include sleep screening, how people are breathing, if they have sleep apnea, or if they have tongue ties. Cheryl shares her story of ultimately stepping away from being a hygienist and becoming a Myofunctional Therapist focusing on tongues and the impact that tongue issues can have on patients' overall health. Cheryl recounts a story of how she saved a patient's life, and says, “We need to value what we do and how we change lives.” Listen to this episode to hear some great ways you can measure the worth of your hygienists and provide higher levels of care for your patients! Highlights from this episode: Challenges that hygienists face through their daily work Things dentists can do to help hygienists not burn out Recognizing and valuing the impactful work that hygienists and other dental office team members do Changing the perception of dental visits to include more essential medical screening Cheryl's personal family experience that led her to focusing on the tongue The benefits of releasing a tongue A dentist's role regarding focusing on tongues and recognizing concerns of the tongue Next steps for dentists to take to help their patients Resources and links mentioned: More information on the March 2022 Mastermind Class Cheryl Shafer's website: Facial Function, Myofunctional Therapy in Maryland and Online Dr. Richard Baxter's book: Tongue Tied Dr. Soroush Zaghi's website: The Breathe Institute James Nester's book: Breath Dr. Michael Geld's book: Gasp!: Airway Health - The Hidden Path to Wellness Dr. Ben Miraglia's website: Airway Health Solutions Other Podcasts: The Untethered Podcast I Spy with my Myo Eye Watch Laura's podcasts on YouTube: Love Your Practice! Additionally, she is a Certified Orofacial Myologist® through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). Dr. Moore has over 23 years of experience in Speech-Language Pathology, earning her clinical doctorate in 2018. For 15 years, she practiced in the schools of North Carolina as both a clinician and Lead SLP with recognition as a Teacher of Excellence and expanded into pediatric private practice in 2010, serving children of all ages. Her main interests include orofacial myology and speech sound disorders (articulation, phonological delay, and apraxia). She uses her own program, Let's Hear It For /R/! which was the subject of her doctoral capstone, to correct the difficult /r/ sound. For phonology, she uses and teaches others how to use Barbara Hodson's Cycles for Phonology due to the success she continues to have with the program. Dr. Moore became a Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM®) after struggling to find help for her own daughter with a severe tongue thrust. Through this training and practice, she is presenting across the country educating SLPs, orthodontists, ENTs, and dentists about the impact myofunctional disorders have on speech, feeding, chewing, breathing, and dentition. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Transitioning from the schools into private practice The learning curve that comes with billing Finding the right people and the right clients for your private practice How to get your name out there and get referrals Making your private practice work with the help of SLPAs Learning from others and applying those lessons to your own practice There are times when Dawn mentions challenges associated with private practice throughout this episode, but keep in mind that everything is figureoutable. When you hit a roadblock (which you will) it's worth trying to figure out a way around it. If it was easy all the time, everyone would do it! What separates those who are successful from those who are not is persisting versus giving up when things get difficult. One of the best ways to be successful in private practice is to make sure that you have a network of people who can support you. My programs offer a community of like-minded private practitioners who help you navigate the bumps and celebrate the wins. Are you thinking about starting a specialty-based private practice? Do you already have one? In this episode, I am talking to an SLP celebrity, Autumn Reed Henning, about how having a specialized business and private practice has really helped her increase her impact and find success fast as a private practice owner. Autumn R. Henning, MS, CCC-SLP, COM®, IBCLC is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She is a Certified Orofacial Myologist® through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM), and she is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Autumn specializes in orofacial function and development throughout the lifespan. She works with infants to adults in her private practice, Chrysalis Orofacial in Greenville, SC. She also has trained thousands of professionals from varying fields internationally in her E3 Model of Care and flagship course TOTS: Tethered Oral Tissues Specialty Training. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Teaching others what is working for you Creating resources that you wish that you had Networking opportunities that can help your private practice Struggles when you're trying to predict your growth Running a specialty-based private practice The best way to advertise Finding the right people for your team One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is that you get to decide what you want to do, who you want to serve, and how you will help them. If you find something that you really like to do and you're good at it over time, you might also want to teach other people how to do it too just like Autumn and myself. Teaching allows both Autumn and myself to have a much bigger impact than either of us could if we stayed at the local level, which is one of the reasons why we do it. To check out Autumn's training, consulting, resources, and more, visit her website at http://www.chrysalisorofacial.com (www.chrysalisorofacial.com)!
