Recorded on 21 January 2021 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Vinod Shah Hear a personal overview of Tony's work in Africa over the last 25 years with his experience in Maxfac across 10 countries, working initially on board Mercy Ships, then with teams on land. For the last 5 years he has been mainly working alongside mission organisations with an emphasis on one-to-one training, usually in the poorest areas.Discover the lessons he's learned both surgically and spiritually; what sustainable impact has been achieved on a small scale with a minimal budget; and their experiences of answered prayer. Dr Giles graduated BDS in Sheffield 1972, FDSRCS in 1976, OMFS Accreditation 1982 and MDSc Thesis in Leeds 1984. He was appointed Consultant in 1984 in Luton. He then volunteered in Madagascar June 1996 with Mercy Ships, then across Africa yearly until ‘retiring' in 2000, enabling him, with his wife, a nurse, to work across Africa half the year. Since 2007, they have worked alongside and training local surgeons and nursing staff, and their multinational teams try to build their capacity to deliver quality healthcare, aiming for sustainable development in OMFS. Since 2016 they have recruited teams independently of Mercy Ships and have also been developing a WhatsApp ‘telemedicine' consultation service. Absolutely blown away by Dr. Jason Auerbach - aka @bloodytoothguy - aka BTG. We start the show talking about how he feels about "bailing out" general dentists who get in over their head (spoiler: he doesnt hate it!) and what its like collaborating with other docs. From brilliant OMFS - to IG influencer - to building a surgeon owned and operated “anti-DSO, DSO” that allows for total autonomy over 4 states - Jason shares the common threads that drive it all. This is a must listen for any dental pro who wants to understand the essence of true success.
Osteo Science Foundation's Scientific and Education Liaison, Myron Tucker, DDS sits down with Daniel A. Hammer, DDS, FACD, FACS to discuss topics from career paths, training during residency, how the OMFS landscape has changed through the years, to days on a boat! This is an episode you do not want to miss!
Long time friends and colleagues Dr. George Kushner and Dr. Jeffrey Marschall sit down to discuss the ins and outs of the OMFS specialty. Listen now to hear their opinions on how topics like mentorship, training, and others have changed from generation to generation.
Dennis is interviewing Dr. John Quinn who's on the ground working Role 1 medical operations for an NGO somewhere in Ukraine. The lessons being learned by John and others during the early days of this conflict and the past 8 years can be used to help those on the ground now and into the future. This is an amazing opportunity to stay informed of current events and prepare ourselves by narrowing expectations and tweaking training. During the interview John stated that anything that can be done to further enable FWB availability and knowledge would be greatly appreciated. In particular, when asked what we could translate, he asked for: Damage Control Resuscitation guidelines to be translated, Prehospital Blood guidelines, anything on Damage Control Surgery for non-surgeons (they have a lot of OB/GYNs and others like OMFS functioning as DCS surgeons at Role 2s). He also stated that they're seeing a TON of TBI "walking wounded" and anything on mild to moderate TBI management would be great. When asked about a trauma registry, John stated that the Ministry of Health is attempting to catalogue all civilian casualty numbers. The Ministry of Defense is VERY close-hold with any info and it would be very hard to elicit the ground-truth there for the time being. John stated that many organizations are using the TCCC cards and all documentation is trying to be written in BOTH Ukranian and English, due to the large number of non-native providers helping in country. They LOVE the DeployedMedicine app, the translation of TCCC and Emergency War Surgery and absolutely look to US and NATO standards of care. It can be hard to formulate long-term treatment plans when your patients are young. Syndromic craniosynostosis is diagnosable at birth, meaning that the treatment plans need to start from the get-go. In the previous episode, we spoke to Dr. Michael Markiewicz (MD DDS FACS) about craniosynostosis: how to diagnose it, what causes it, the different forms of the deformity, and why doctors shouldn't delay diagnosis. In this episode, we welcome back Dr. Mankiewicz and talk further about the syndromic aspect of craniosynostosis, looking specifically at syndromic versus non-syndromic. Dr. Markiewicz compares Apert syndrome and Crouzon syndrome, their characteristics and features, and the differing opinions on treatment plans. Dr. Markiewicz discusses the purpose of distraction osteogenesis when treating craniosynostosis, the amazing combination of virtual surgery planning and resorbable plates/screws, and why he is an advocate for cranial implants. Key Points From This Episode:The syndromes that can accompany craniosynostosis. How geneticists help diagnose syndromic craniosynostosis.Who makes up the Craniofacial team. The most common syndromes Dr. Markiewicz treats. The main characteristics and features of Apert syndrome and Crouzon syndrome. The differing opinions on treatment for Craniofacial dysostosis. The timeline for sequencing different stages of treatment. The role of the neurosurgeon, pediatric ophthalmologist, orthodontist, and OMFS.The role of virtual planning. The materials (typically titanium) used during craniosynostosis surgery. The purpose of distraction osteogenesis when treating craniosynostosis. Early diagnosis and early treatment are the keys to managing any immune-based disease. But, how do oral diseases differ? Dr. Robert Marx, OMFS, podcast host and author, extensively discusses immune-based diseases which are specific to the oral cavity. It is important to understand why normal physicians tend to discard any significant signs or symptoms specific to oral diseases (typically due to a lack of knowledge) and why, as an OMFS, you cannot make the same mistakes. Dr. Marx talks in detail about different diseases, specifically aphthous stomatitis, peri-implantitis, pemphigus vulgaris, erythema multiforme, and pemphigoid. Dr. Marx explains why he is an advocate for using prednisone, how to successfully biopsy and when you need to consult an immunologist. From recognition to diagnosis and then different treatment plans, this episode is a comprehensive look at how to properly manage immune-based oral diseases. Key Points From This Episode:The different types of immune-based diseases. Why physicians discard information specific to oral diseases. The importance of knowing your patient's medical history/background.How to recognize and diagnose pemphigus vulgaris. The difference between pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoid.Tzanck cells: are they worth noting? The different types of lesions that occur in the oral cavity. Why you should work with an immunologist when prescribing certain medications.Dr. Marx's opinions on decadron versus prednisone. How to properly prescribe and create a prednisone treatment plan. How to recognize pemphigoid and whom to consult.Where and how to biopsy properly.Dr. Marx's experience treating erythema multiforme. The different types and treatments for implantitis. What to note about aphthous stomatitis.Management of C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency.Dr. Marx's opinions on the causes of immune-based diseases.Recognition versus diagnosis.A look at Dr. Marx's podcasts and books. Why Dr. Marx is passionate about climate change.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Dr. Robert Marx on Twitter — https://twitter.com/drrobertemarxDr. Robert Marx on LinkedIn — https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-e-marx/Dr. Robert Marx on Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/robertemarx/Dr. Robert Marx Podcast — https://open.spotify.com/show/55bZc3HsfzFXRzBkDrbPklClimate Change: The Real Story — https://www.amazon.com/Climate-Change-Dr-Robert-Marx/dp/B0BLTKF5YR/Everyday Oral Surgery Website — https://www.everydayoralsurgery.com/ Everyday Oral Surgery on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/everydayoralsurgery/ Everyday Oral Surgery on Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/EverydayOralSurgery/Dr. Grant Stucki Email — grantstucki@gmail.comDr. Grant Stucki Phone — 720-441-6059KLS Martin promo code EOSExo22 — https://www.klsmartin.com/ KLS Martin promo code KLSPHL— https://www.klsmartin.com/

There are many ways to be a leader, but there aren't nearly as many ways to do it properly. At the end of the day, your focus needs to be on the community that you are leading and teaching, not your own image. This episode features a panel discussion on the history of contemporary issues of women in the OMFS specialty. Moderated by Dr. Stephanie Drew. Guests include Dr. Jocelyn Shand, and Dr. Mei Chong.
Dennis had the honor of interviewing Dr.

Marcus Hwang explores Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC) in a two-part series with Dr. Jeffrey Carter. In Part 1, they focus on the history of ASCs in the United States and its relevance to OMS. They explore insurance reimbursement changes that affected the scope of practice, trend of orthognathic surgery in ASCs, the relevance of the payer mix, and much more. Stay tuned for Part 2, as the two delve into the specifics on building ASCs and Dr. Carter's tips and tricks from his experience establishing such practices over his career. Dr. Carter obtained his DMD from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and trained in OMFS at Vanderbilt University. The host makes a mistake towards the end of the episode when he comments that the Oregon Medicaid covers orthognathic surgery for patient's undergoing gender affirmation surgery. This is incorrect. The more correct statement is that it is being advocated for Oregon Medicaid to cover facial surgeries for those experiencing gender dysphoria. Fortunately, some third party payers that traditionally did not cover orthognathic surgery began to cover facial feminization/masculinization surgery. But it is crucial for OMS that orthognathic surgery is included in that language. The host regrets making this mistake, but left this misstep in the episode to introduce potential strategies going forward for insurance coverage for OMS procedures. I was with Dr. Jaibin in Cochi when he spoke about his teacher in college. He had very high regards for him. Later I learnt that he is one of the most well known surgeons of India and also a lawyer. Woah!! That's when I decided, I had to have him on my podcast!! I requested Dr. Jaibin to ask Dr. George Paul if he was ready to record a podcast with me.Dr George Paul is a consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Salem, Tamil Nadu with practice limited to his speciality. He is also an ethicist with LLB and a PG Diploma in ethics.Dr Paul is a former professor of OMFS and is currently a member of the Faculty of Dentistry ,Kerala University of Health Sciences. He has to his credit numerous peer reviewed publications in National and International Journals. He has made numerous presentations in national and international conferences and workshops. Dr Paul has delivered four orations at the national level. He has authored three books or chapters in books and also writes in the lay press on various issues.Dr Paul has been the national secretary and president of the Maxillofacial Surgery Association ( AOMSI) and is the recipient of several citations and awards for his humanitarian contribution to society. In this episode sir speaks about how the pandemic changed our way of practice, A few things that went wrong, Loads of misconceptions, A few eye opening facts that I never knew about How the perception of COVID 19 changed with timeHow the pandemic lead to profits for a few industries And contemplation about vaccinationThe most interesting part however, is when he speaks about how he as a surgeon, had to perform surgeries on COVID positive cases that required emergency care. Getting RT PCR done 6 times is not a joke and nor is getting quarantined so often a great experience. The thing that I will always remember the most is that he has a dental clinic in Salem which has an OPD more than some of the private dental institutes of India. The clinic is huge but despite his achievements he is very humble. Another funny thing that I wont forget is that he had actually denied to record this podcast first because he believed that his voice is not that good for a listening audience. I totally disagree with that. Finally after a bit of pursuing he agreed and I am so thankful to Dr. Jaibin for this. I think I enjoyed listing to Dr. Paul because he speaks with amazing articulation and patience. The kind of in-depth knowledge he has about his forte is admirable.Do check out this special episode. If you have any questions for sir or me, please put them in the comments.
