Does your child have cavities? Do you notice they often breathe through their mouth or snoring at night? Dental issues like cavities, crowded teeth and breathing issues seem all too common nowadays. Yet, trying to get to the core of what is causing these issues can be overwhelming. Lucky for us, I am diving into all of this with Alex Clinton in this episode. She is a biological dental hygienist, myofunctional therapist and holistic dental coach based in Ontario, Canada. She supports parents in preventing oral health issues including cavities, crowded teeth, mouth breathing and poor sleep. Alex and I chat about: How to find a holistic or biological dental team Why airway and oral health are so important What food and nutrients might be affecting our dental health Free and doable lifestyle shifts for optimal dental health The importance of breathing Why slowing down and letting go of hustle culture is so essential for our health Signs of airway issues to look for in our children The epidemic of cavities and what we can do about it The importance of preconception care for offspring's' teeth The impact of detox pathways on health and how to support these After practicing in British Columbia for 10 years, Alex returned to Ontario to continue studying and building her practice Functional Oral Health. She created this to provide individuals and professionals with the resources and tools all under one roof. Alexandra realized early on in her career that many patients were feeling discouraged by standard recommendations and wanted to know how their oral health might be impacting their overall health. She then proceeded to train with some of the best airway and myofunctional therapists on the planet and was able to bring these perspectives to the practice. This allowed her to help many patients of all ages understand how these factors impact the growth and development of the oral complex, including their impact on airway, breathing, chewing, speech, orthodontic development, and sleep issues. Alexandra enjoys teaching healthcare professionals how to integrate breathing and myofunctional therapy programs, including biological dentistry techniques, into their current dental or health care practices. Did you know that your tongue may be the strongest muscle in your body? The tongue has 16 muscles and never stops moving even while you sleep. If you're like most people, you were not aware of this fact nor were you aware that proper positioning of the tongue in the roof of your mouth and nasal breathing can improve circulatory and respiratory issues such as asthma and COPD as well as fibromyalgia, ADHD, migraines and so much more. In this episode of Six Weeks to Fitness, I am joined by Becca Rose, the owner of Myofunctional Pathways, LLC. She is a Myofunctional Therapist, Certified Butayko Breathing Instructor, Sleep Coach and Registered Dental Hygienist. Since a very young age, Becca has exhibited an interest in oral health and dental topics. She has been in the dental field since 2004. When she learned about Myofunctional Therapy, the "AH HA" moment happened. She realized that this was the missing piece to some of the symptoms she had experienced in her life. And so the journey began. Since then, she has improved many of her own myofunctional concerns. Now she has the experience and first hand knowledge to help her patients find the missing link to many of their symptoms with determination to find the root cause. “Often, THE TONGUE is the root cause and it is most often the last thing anyone ever thinks of.” Her clients have gained significant, life changing improvements of symptoms! Becca also has an 8 week Performance and Recovery program. Jenny shares her personal journey and how she discovered the transformative effects of this therapy. We explore the core principles of myofunctional therapy and how it can impact so many areas of your life (and your child's) including night waking & challenging daytime behaviours.Episode Highlights:Jenny's personal story (inspired by her daughter's struggles with dyslexia, behavioral issues, and sleep problems) to explore oral-facial myofunctional therapy. The 4 main goals of myofunctional therapy. The impact of myofunctional therapy on behavior, sleep, allergies, and even tonsil size. The role of tongue ties and oral restrictions in oral facial myofunctional disorders. The importance of nasal breathing for oxygen delivery, nitric oxide production, and overall health.Book an initial in-person or virtual assessment with Jenny on her website. Hang out with Jenny on Instagram & Facebook @myobalanceomtA bit about Jenny: "I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist. I first stepped foot into the dental field back in 2011 graduating St. Clair College in 2014. Over the years I have taken many continuing education courses, leading me to finish my Bachelor of Science - with specialization in dental hygiene, at the University of Detroit Mercy in 2018. I have always been interested in how oral health effects overall health, and have taken many continuing education courses around this area. I have found that there are many people (including myself) with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) and that people were just dealing with it. This brought me to do some research and asking myself - Why are people just dealing with the symptoms? There has to be negative long-term effects in having OMDs and there has to be a root cause to the OMD.During the shutdown of March of 2020 due to the global pandemic, I came across the field of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT). This was the first time I have heard of OMT and wondered why I havent heard of it before. Researching more about OMT, I knew I had to get certified, and completed my certification October 2020.During my studies of OMT I learned how to assess for signs and symptoms of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and learned how to treat my own OMDs, realizing the impact it had on my overall health. I am excited to provide the same services to you! Through a comprehensive examination, a therapy program is specifically designed depending on the persons myofunctional disorder and severity to help them start breathing well, sleeping well, and living well.I also look forward in collaborating with other health care professionals who are interested in learning about OMT and how it can help make a difference in their patients who live with OMDs.Outside of Dental Hygiene and OMT, you can find me out and about in the community with my husband and daughter, usually taking our two dogs for their walks. I have recently enjoyed learning the art of photography - mainly landscapes. My biggest joy would have to be traveling; Im always looking for a new destinatiWant to learn more from me? Do you feel as though your dental practice is not only recognizing but also celebrating diversity? For a closer look at this vital topic, I welcome experienced dental practitioners Karese Laguerre, RDH, and Chris “Love” Williams, RDH, to this episode. Both feel as though diversity is missing from our industry and are organizing an amazing experience for all to learn more about this topic. In this episode, we delve into diversity, equity, and inclusion within our workplace and patient culture. Karese is a Myofunctional Therapist, author, and founder of The Myo Spot, a practice through which she uses teletherapy to help clients overcome tongue ties, TMJ disorders, sleep apnea, grinding, anxiety, and various breathing and orofacial dysfunction. Chris "Love" Williams is a United States Air Force combat veteran turned dental hygienist, entrepreneur, speaker, and life coach. As an accomplished professional and motivational speaker, Chris inspires audiences with his unique perspective and infectious enthusiasm and has a personal mission to impact 1 million people. Together, Karese and Chris share a passion for celebrating diversity and have co-founded The Dental Culture Con, an interactive virtual conference that will be happening June 15 -17, 2023. “There is a person attached to these teeth” is a saying that Karese likes to say, and this is so true as we show understanding and empathy to the various populations we serve within our dental practices. It is important to celebrate the differences that people have. Within our industry, patients are more likely to show up to their appointments and respect our dental practices when we respect them as humans. Chris says they are working to promote the “peaceful harmony of connectedness” that people genuinely want to feel. Regarding the conference he says, “The goal is for people to know how to connect with others who are different.” As dental practice owners, it is important to create offices that are inviting to all. As we advertise, showing diversity demonstrates our welcomeness to all within our communities. And this applies to staffing as well, as we work to create environments that retain our current staff and attract new, diverse team members. It's important to include and represent everyone and celebrate them in the best way possible. Are you ready to learn more about celebrating our differences and all the ways those appear in our lives? If you think culture is important to your business and your life, you are invited to attend The Dental Culture Con! Listen to this episode for more information about the event and a greater understanding of diversity and how it can impact our dental practices! Highlights from this episode: Why it is important for dental practice owners to pay attention to diversity In a time where there are employee shortages in our industry, the need to build a culture where people are celebrated because they are different Ways to communicate welcomeness to our practices How culture will be discussed in the upcoming conference and how to build it within your practice Bringing the five love languages into our practices and getting the most from our employees The importance of recognizing why people enter dentistry Resources and links mentioned: Event website: Dentalcuturecon.com Karese's book: Accomplished: How to Sleep Better, Eliminate Burnout and Execute Goals Watch Laura's podcasts on YouTube: Love Your Practice! Guest Kelley Quolas, Myofunctional Therapist and RDH. You may know her from the funny myo reels on @MyMyoMyHealth on Instagram and Tik Tok. Kelley has 2 practices, Phoenix and East Valley Arizona. What we think is super cool about Kelley is that she has SLP who work in her practices. There is drama and territorial behavior around who can provide myofunctional therapy which is: SLP, RDH, PT, OT, DDS. Doesn't include Dental Assistants, Massage Therapists, Influencers, Athletic Trainers, etc. This episode is all about how can we collaborate with each other and fill in gaps to help patients get the best outcomes. We will also talk about the relationship between sleep disordered breathing and mental health disorders. And get real personal with our personal struggles. Kelley is also going through a DNA appliance with Vivos and she will tell us all the interesting things she has noticed already. The Munch Bunch Wellness and Rejuvenation Retreat. Megan and Kimi will discuss as neutrally as we can some tips for picking your myofunctional therapist. We will discuss training and is there one training that is better than all others? Do you have to see a specific type of provider (RDH hygienist, SLP, PT, *OT)? Should you do virtual or in person therapy? Does your life and schedule align with what they have available? Can you just do mewing exercises from a Youtuber or Tik Tok influencer? Do you connect with your therapist and feel comfortable? This is episode #39. Nicole Heiser a fellow fitness enthusiast, a mother, and she is also a Myofunctional Therapist. Myofunctional Therapy is designed to help patients that suffer from sleep disordered breathing (snoring, OSA, UARS), speech problems, tongue thrusting, tongue tie, mouth breathing, jaw pain, oral habits, and orthodontic relapse, just to name a few. Today, is an opportunity to learn a bit about our oral health, and how our daily breathing practices can affect our overall lifestyles. So, stick around to meet my friend, Nicole and dive deep into breath work, oral health, and some tips to encourage great sleep!
Registered dental hygienists Sarah Hornsby and Melissa Mugno sit with Dr. B to discuss the importance of myofunctional therapy not just to one's oral health, but to their overall health.Sarah and Melissa define myofunctional therapy as the identification and treatment of issues within the oral cavity and the head/neck that are affecting potentially any area of the body, from the airway to the stability of occlusion, to the way we speak, chew, and swallow. Myofunctional therapy consists of personalized exercises aimed at accomplishing four goals: To be able to breathe through your nose all day and all night; to have your tongue fully on the roof of your mouth all day and all night; to keep your lips together all day and all night, and to swallow correctly. In 2014, Melissa became an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist to tie all her experience and knowledge together so that she could begin to help patients, with a focus on the whole body. From the understated importance of the tongue as “the mouth's natural retainer” to stamping out compensation behaviors via neuromuscular reeducation, Sarah and Melissa offer a thorough guide on the complementarity between oral health and myofunctional therapy.Dr. B concurs, saying, “A dentist that does not practice with a myofunctional therapist or does not have access to one is not practicing dentistry correctly.”Key Points :● Introducing today's topic: What is myofunctional therapy and why is it important? These are just two of the lessons I learned on today's show.In this "not-so-woo-woo" episode, Rebecca discusses how she meets a child where they're at to create a long lasting change in how the tongue and facial muscles work together to produce speech. If years of regular speech therapy just hasn't been working for your child, perhaps it's time to work with an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist?I had a profound take-away at the end of the episode. I hope it helps you in your interactions with your child too. I'd love to hear your thoughts...so, let me know what you think.Resources: Connect with Rebecca at info@nvedtx.comOr visit her website at www.https://nvedtx.com/For Our Special Kids (4OSK)We'd love to hear from you at ForOurSpecialKids@gmail.com or at Jen@ForOurSpecialKids.com if you have any questions, topics, or an amazing person we should highlight. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Karese Laguerre. In this episode, we talk about something most of us probably don't think much about: breathing. What I didn't know before this episode was how simple it can be to fix some breathing difficulties. Karese gives super simple tips on how we can identify breathing issues and improve our breathing today. About Karese Karese Laguerre is a Registered Dental Hygienist and Myofunctional Therapist. She founded The Myo Spot, a practice aimed at amplifying oral wellness to whole body wellness. Dentistry and medicine go together! After over 30 years seeing patients and impacting lives as a dental hygienist, Cheryl Shafer has changed her professional path and is now a Certified Orofacial Myologist focusing on airway, breathing, and tongue function. In this candid conversation, Cheryl addresses her burnout as a hygienist and thoughts for how we should measure the worth of our hygienists, discusses new services we should include in regular exams, and wants us all to remain focused on “The mission that we have is the health and welfare of our patients.” As practice owners and healthcare providers, our roles continue to evolve regarding what we should be doing for our patients. Cheryl believes that dental offices should be viewed as any other medical specialists treating patients; a dentist is a member of an individual's medical team. So, it is critical that the care that can and should be given in dental visits is well known. Some of these issues include sleep screening, how people are breathing, if they have sleep apnea, or if they have tongue ties. Cheryl shares her story of ultimately stepping away from being a hygienist and becoming a Myofunctional Therapist focusing on tongues and the impact that tongue issues can have on patients' overall health. Cheryl recounts a story of how she saved a patient's life, and says, “We need to value what we do and how we change lives.” Listen to this episode to hear some great ways you can measure the worth of your hygienists and provide higher levels of care for your patients! Highlights from this episode: Challenges that hygienists face through their daily work Things dentists can do to help hygienists not burn out Recognizing and valuing the impactful work that hygienists and other dental office team members do Changing the perception of dental visits to include more essential medical screening Cheryl's personal family experience that led her to focusing on the tongue The benefits of releasing a tongue A dentist's role regarding focusing on tongues and recognizing concerns of the tongue Next steps for dentists to take to help their patients Resources and links mentioned: More information on the March 2022 Mastermind Class Cheryl Shafer's website: Facial Function, Myofunctional Therapy in Maryland and Online Dr. Richard Baxter's book: Tongue Tied Dr. Soroush Zaghi's website: The Breathe Institute James Nester's book: Breath Dr. Michael Geld's book: Gasp!: Airway Health - The Hidden Path to Wellness Dr. Ben Miraglia's website: Airway Health Solutions Other Podcasts: The Untethered Podcast I Spy with my Myo Eye Watch Laura's podcasts on YouTube: Love Your Practice! The challenges that parents have faced the past couple of years has been tremendous. During the early months of the pandemic, many parents were forced, literally overnight, into essentially becoming teachers as their kids' education went remote. On top of that, many parents still had jobs that required their attention. With the loss of sleep, dealing with laundry and cooking, and making sure the bills get paid…it's no joke that parenthood is the hardest job one will ever have. The workplace has, historically, not been a great environment for people to share with their co-workers about personal challenges. This can leave parents feeling isolated, burned out, and suffering a level of anxiety they've had to keep private. In this episode I speak with Karese Laguerre, a myofunctional therapist based in West Palm Beach, Florida. We talk about parenthood, how to get better sleep, eliminate burnout and execute goals.www.themyospot.comlinkedin.com/in/kareselaguerreBook - Accomplished: How to Sleep Better, Eliminate Burnout and Execute Goals

In today's episode, Brittny chats with a fellow colleague and myofunctional therapist — Sarah Hornsby. Sarah Hornsby is the founder and creator of Myo Mentor, owner of Faceology, and co-director of the Myofunctional therapy program at the Breathe Institute. Brittny and Sarah talk all things myo related from tough Myofunctional therapy cases to all of the innovative work the Breathe Institute is doing to advance the field. Sarah focuses on discussing floor of the mouth engagement and how Dr. Zaghi and others at the Breathe Institute are trying to come up with a standard measurement.
Today we are going to talk about oral myofunctional therapy! What is it? What do we do as oral myofunctional therapists? Why would you even need an oral myofunctional therapist? Great question! The short answer: You should not need one. If you breathe through our nose all day and all night. Myofunctional therapy is physical therapy type exercises for the muscles of the face and muscles of the tongue, swallowing, breathing and everything surrounding the oral cavity. The goal is really simple, yet so many of us breathe through our mouths now, especially with wearing masks. There are four goals of myo functional therapy.-You have to breathe through your nose all day and all night.-You have to have your tongue in the top of your mouth, called the roof, all day and all night.-You have to have your lips together so your mouth closes to get a good lip seal.-You have to swallow correctly and that includes chewing and eating and drinking liquids and swallowing saliva. Here's the thing, all of these exercises seem so simple in theory, they're very very simple and accomplishing those goals, Sounds easy... right? We all should just do this normally and naturally if you think about it. You should not need an oral myofunctional therapist if you can do this on your own. However, what we're trying to do through teaching these exercises is really restoring normal function in our patients, so it's normal, natural and healthy to breath, just taking a patient from being a chronic mouth breather, to a consistent nasal breather during the daytime and at nighttime, will dramatically improve their overall health. 3 Things You'll Learn in This Episode -What is Myofunctional Therapy? What are the goals of Myofunctional Therapy? -What is an Oral Myofunctional Therapist? What are the functions of an Oral Myofunctional Therapist? -Why do you need an Oral Myofunctional Therapist? What are the ten reasons to see one?

Karese, like many parents, suffered in silence while her children struggled with the symptoms of undiagnosed sleep and breathing issues. One visit to a pediatric dentist changed the trajectory of their lives. Already a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH), Karese, trained with Sandra Holtzman, Lois Laynee and Sarah Hornsby to establish her orofacial myology knowledge. With this initial training and numerous others, in a few short years she has not only resolved all her children's issues, but helped hundreds of patients, children and adults alike, discover how great life can be functioning on full. Her private practice, The Myo Spot is now a leader in the quest for myofunctional therapy awareness and public education. Her latest published book, Accomplished, delves into how to sleep better, eliminate burnout, and execute goals. Karese's mission is to transform and positively impact as many households as possible through dynamic breath, brain and body work.
Dr. Pejman Katiraei is a Board Certified Pediatrician, who is also boarded and fellowship trained in integrative and holistic medicine. He completed his undergraduate at UCLA and then obtained his Osteopathic medical degree at Western University of Health Sciences. He then went on to complete a Pediatric residency at Loma Linda University, where he stayed on as teaching faculty for over 4 years. Dr. Katiraei has also completed two fellowships in integrative medicine, one with the University of Arizona and another under Dr. Kamyar Hedayat in a French model of integrative medicine called Endobiogeny. Dr. Katiraei’s research and experiences helped him realize that “the children of today do not have to become the sick adults of tomorrow.” He is now in private practice in Santa Monica, where he focuses on helping children with complex medical conditions and severe behavioral challenges. In today’s episode, Shay Beider warmly welcomes Dr. Katiraei to talk about his holistic, integrative practice and to share his philosophy of not sticking a person into a single box. He discusses his experience treating exposure to mold and lyme disease and how each can cause issues within the body that often get overlooked. Dr. Katiraei also shares his knowledge about the underlying causes of anxiety and how his curiosity has helped him to see that there are contributing biological factors. Please Leave a Review! Andrew and Michelle had this week's guest on for an entire series on myofunctional therapy earlier this year, and now that 2020 is at long last winding down, she's returned to give an update on the status of all things myo since COVID-19 swept the industry and the world. Returning guest Sarah K. Hornsby, RDH, is a myofunctional therapist, speaker and mentor. Her interest in myofunctional disorders arose from her own myofunctional problems, inspiring her to ask bigger questions about why these issues are prevalent in today's society. This ultimately led to her launching her own myofunctional therapy practice, Faceology, a decade ago. In this episode, Sarah explains why having to wear a mask isn't an excuse to mouth-breathe, reveals the surprising benefits of humming, and stresses why you should get to know your own nose. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: 17:22 - Sarah delves into the overarching benefits of having more hygienists speak to their patients about any myofunctional issues. - The reason it can be difficult for some patients to grasp the actual mechanics of their own tongues. - Confronting a national bad habit: mouth-breathing. - One neat trick for building up valuable nitric oxide in your nasal passages. - The shifts Sarah has noticed in the educational and industry landscape since the pandemic began. - Sarah's big announcement for the future of the Breathe Institute. - Why everyone needs to take the initiative to learn about their own nose. QUOTES: “Putting a mask over your mouth-breathing is kind of like, well, shouldn't your nose be doing that?” “There are so many opportunities for education. I have noticed booming changes in online courses.” “We don't need to fight amongst ourselves. We have bigger battles.” “It's so much easier to read a book, take a course, join a webinar, but the scariest, hardest thing is to see your first patient.” “I don't want people to get into a program that they can't finish.” LINKS: The Breathe Institute - https://www.thebreatheinstitute.com/ Faceology - https://myfaceology.com/ MyoMentor - http://www.myomentor.com/ Sarah's homepage - https://www.sarahkhornsby.com/ Sarah on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/sarahkh12 Sarah on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SarahKHornsby/ Sarah on Twitter - https://twitter.com/SarahHornsbyRDH Sarah on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/sarah_k_hornsby/ THIS EPISODE COUNTS FOR CE! - but read the disclaimer below as it might not count for your state.
