Joe "Peppy" Sciarra was drafted into the U.S. Army the day after he graduated from high school. All four boys in his family served during World War II. After basic training, Sciarra was assigned to the Army's 25th Infantry Division, known as "Tropic Lightning." He was then ordered to be part of a heavy weapons platoon operating 81 millimeter mortars. The weapon would be critical to the U.S. driving the Japanese off of 47 separate ridges on the island of Luzon in the Philippines over five months in 1945.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Sciarra explains how the 81 millimeter guns were operated and why he sees them as the decisive weapon at Luzon. He also tells us about a suprisingly easy landing at Luzon, but there would nothing easy after that. He details the Japanese weapons that took a significant toll on American forces, what it was like fighting uphill all the time, how the Japanese ambushed our soldiers, and how he ended up with with a promotion he didn't want.Sciarra also takes us into the personal side of war, losing friends, and honoring the remains of the fallen. He also tells us about his harrowing journey to Japan for occupational duty and the serious illness he faced at the end of the war. But more than anything, Sciarra wants all Americans to appreciate the courage and sacrifice of the U.S. Army infantry in World War II and beyond.

On Episode #179 of the PricePlow Podcast, Mike and Ben sit down with Tyrus Sciarra, the high-energy sales dynamo from Sensapure Flavors, at IFT First 2025 in Chicago. Broadcasting from Sensapure's booth (the same location where we recorded our Episode #175 with Solar Foods), this conversation dives deep into the evolving world of flavor science, industry trends, and the passionate career journey of one of the supplement industry's most enthusiastic flavor advocates. From Natural to Even More Natural with Sensapure Flavors at IFT First 2025 Tyrus brings his characteristic energy and industry expertise to discuss everything from the natural vs. artificial flavor debate to international taste preferences, sweetener technologies, and the rise of the "clean label" movement. The conversation reveals how Sensapure Flavors differentiates itself through superior customer service, owned manufacturing capabilities, and deep understanding of the sports nutrition market. From his early days at another flavor house to his current role helping brands create flavor systems that drive consumer loyalty, Tyrus shares insights into why flavor isn't just about taste -- it's about building successful brands. In the Supplement Industry and Don't Know Tyrus?! You Should! The discussion also explores current industry controversies, including the Food Babe-driven movement away from natural flavors toward whole food extracts, the ongoing sucralose versus natural sweetener debate, and how American flavor profiles are conquering international markets. Whether you're a brand looking to understand flavor development or simply curious about what goes into making your favorite supplements taste great, this episode provides rare insights into the science and business of flavor creation. https://blog.priceplow.com/podcast/tyrus-sciarra-sensapure-flavors-179 Video: Tyrus Sciarra Breaks Down Flavor Science and Industry Trends at IFT First 2025 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESsccpGF5gw Detailed Show Notes: The Science and Business of Flavor Creation (0:00) – Introductions: The "Walking Ball of Energy" (2:00) – Career Journey: From ADM Wild to Sensapure Leadership (8:00) – The Flavor Industry Landscape: Service Over Commodity (12:00) – Manufacturing Excellence: Owning the Process (16:00) – Ownership Strategy: Learning from Xtend's Success (23:00) – The Natural Flavor Controversy: Beyond Food Babe (32:00) – Citric Acid Alternatives: Meeting Clean Label Demands (37:00) – Cost Analysis: Premium Pricing for Clean Label (39:00) – The Sucralose Debate: Performance vs. Perception (47:00) – Sweetener Technology: Understanding Peak Profiles (50:00) – International Taste Preferences: American Flavors Go Global (54:00) – Trend Prediction: Personalization and Athlete Collaborations (58:00) – Brand Visibility: Moving Beyond Behind-the-Scenes (1:02:00) – Industry Evolution: Community Over Competition (1:05:00) – Market Education: Energy Drinks and Consumer Awareness (1:10:00) – Viral Marketing: Lessons from Basic Supplements (1:14:00) – Nostalgia and Memory: The Emotional Power of Flavor (1:16:00) – Innovation Opportunities: Functional Flavor Development Where to Follow Tyr...

Joe “Peppy” Sciarra was 16 years old when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He was drafted into the Army the day after he graduated high school. He had planned on enlisting anyway. Sciarra was assigned to an 81 mm mortar squad of the 25th infantry division under General MacArthur. After 9 months training in New Caledonia and a stop for supplies on Guadalcanal, he and 68,000 men landed at Luzon in the Philippines. He would spend the next five and half months involved in terrible jungle fighting, capturing 47 different ridges from 100,000 Japanese. “My mortar tube was 45 pounds and my pack was 50 pounds, plus my weapon.   That made for some difficult climbing.” Despite the fact that he had many comrades killed to the left and right of him, Sciarra says his only injury was nearly knocking out his front teeth when the hit the ground a little too hard during shelling. After being ordered to venture ahead of the company in order to draw enemy fire, Sciarra vented his anger at the Lieutenant after the patrol. “I didn't care if he court martialed me, I had to tell him off”.  Sciarra and that Lt. would become close friends. Following the Japanese surrender he was assigned as part of the mainland occupation forces. He says it was surprising how courteously the Japanese people treated him. Sciarra suffered from the effects of malaria for a long time after returning home and faced numerous challenges securing his Veteran benefits because many of the records had been destroyed. He finally had to personally travel to Hawaii in order to secure proof of his service. TAKEAWAY: “I want these messages about what our guys went through to be known all across the country. Even though it has been 80 years I still think about all the men in my platoon who didn't make it.”
