This week on the Global Research News Hour we mark both the 19th month of Israel's continued assaults on Gaza since October 7th, and we also mark the 77th anniversary of the NAKBA, the displacement and expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians which started the Arab-Israeli War. We will first hear from Louay Alghoul, a Winnipeg lawyer with over a hundred relatives killed over the past year and a half and he will inform us regarding the situation as he encountered the fleeing and dying from his trips to Egypt in recent months. Later on we hear from radio station CFCR in Saskatoon regarding their guest Deirdre Nunan an orthopedic surgeon who talks about what she encountered through her practice of medicine in this unending Middle East war.

Coping with COVID-19 in Canada's North

Covering a country like Canada while COVID-19 is wreaking havoc is a difficult thing to do. Canada is so large with lots of regional differences. And nowhere in the country is the difference so stark as it is between Canada's North and the rest of the country. Today we have two interviews from two different parts of the north --  one from Cumberland House in northern Saskatchewan, and another from a bit further north and west, up in Yellowknife. With Yellowknife being a city, and Cumberland House a much smaller community, there are differences between the two. But there are some commonalities as well that come with being two relatively isolated communities cut off from the mainstream in southern Canada. 1) Marlene McKay is a resident of both Cumberland House and Saskatoon where she is a professor of social work with the University of Regina. Her partner runs one of the local stores in the town of Cumberland House and on a nearby reserve. Cumberland House is in COVID-19 lockdown right now. This interview is an excerpt from an interview done by Don Kossick from his program Making the Links with community radio CFCR 90.5 FM in Saskatoon. 2) George Lessard, media specialist and consultant who has lived in Yellowknife and other parts of the North for many years. He talks about Yellowknife as a hub to remote communities.  As of today, April 16, there are still no confirmed cases in Nunavut, five in the Northwest Territories and eight in Yukon, according to the government of Canada website. As for Cumberland House, the Saskatchewan government website says there are seven cases in the far north, but do not break down by community where they are. Image: Victoria Fenner

Hello and welcome to Rank & File Radio - Prairie Edition on CKUW 95.90 FM. Canadian labour news and analysis across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. This show is an independent partner with RankandFile.ca and supported by UFCW Local 832. This episode is broadcasting from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Treaty 1 territory, the original lands of the Cree, Oji Cree Anishnaabeg Dakota and Dene peoples and the homeland of the Metis nation. Today’s broadcast date is November 18, 2018. I’m your host, Emily Leedham. This show is supported by listeners through Patreon and by UFCW Local 832. Today on the show, the Saskatoon Co-op strikes continues, fighting a two-tiered wage system that would see new hires earn less. I was in Saskatoon this weekend and visited the Martensville Co-op picket line, which is a town 15 minutes outside city. There I talked to Lucy Flack Figueiredo, Secretary-Treasurer for UFCW 1400. And Don Kossick, activist and organizer in Saskatoon, co-op member and former UFCW negotiator, shares a bit of historical context for the co-op strike and what it might mean for the future of co-op going forward. Don produces a community radio program Making the Links on CFCR 90.5 FM. We’ll also hear some audio from the National Farmer’s Union Convention and a Fight for $15 organizing meeting hosted by the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour. But first, an update on the CUPW strike. ---- The Co-op Strike: Big Solidarity in Little Martensville---- http://rankandfile.ca/the-co-op-strike/ --- Don Kossick--- https://www.donkossick.ca/

In his final words released in a letter penned two days before his death, he reminded us all of the values he held dear. He wrote, “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world.” Making the Links' Don Kossick did this interview with Jack Layton many years ago when he first took over the leadership of the NDP.
