There aren't many of us who haven't heard the name Fiona Simson. Fiona Simson became the first female President of the National Farmer's Federation, and recently stepped down after an incredible 7 years at the helm.  She's had an amazing career to date; I've read the articles, I've met her, and I've watched her passionately advocate for the industry. But on a personal level, it's rare we hear more about her life. Fiona is also a mum, and a grandma, a journey that began when she was living in the city, and a friend set her up with a country boy. We chat life, love, business and motherhood, including how times have changed, and why some rural mums have lost their villages. The RFDS (Queensland Section) is giving away an incredible prize pack worth over $700 that includes an RFDS Premium Rescue Swag, RFDS Australian Merino Wool Blanket, RFDS cap and RFDS mugs. Welcome to October 12, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate those who work the land and a Southern melting pot. Farmer's Day has been celebrated since the mid 1800s and it's easy to see why. These folks contribute to much more than just the food on our table. Their hard work affects everything from manufacturing to transportation, producing a whole host of products from leather goods to textiles and even the ethanol in our gas tanks. These days it's more important than ever to support your local farmers. Even city slickers can do their part by purchasing from farmer's markets and visiting restaurants that take pride in their farm to table menus. On National Farmer's Day, celebrate the way of life that sustains us all.  When we think of gumbo, the hearty stew of seasoned vegetables and seafood or meat, we immediately think of Southern cooking. For this we can thank its older West African roots that blended with Native American and European traditions to create a culinary classic. Traditional recipes call for okra, a vegetable that thickens things nicely, but you may have also heard of gumbo filé. This Choctaw spice made from dried sassafras root, also thickens the stew and was most likely used when okra was out of season. And if all else fails you can leave the cooking to an expert! On National Gumbo Day, celebrate this stew that is a true melting pot of flavors.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day Learn more about your ad choices. Permaculture is the art of permanent agriculture, AND “Art of Living” is a way of Life! Anything in excess is not good, not even farming. It has been observed that prolonged farming does more bad to the soil than good. Here's how. Of the five factors needed for farming – air, water, soil, sunlight and nutrients in the soil – a farmer is heavily dependent on soil nutrients and availability of water for a good produce. However, over a period of time, excess tilling of the soil, overuse of chemicals and irrigation without adequate drainage causes irreparable damage to the soil. Now, if the lost nutrients are not replenished, then the soil becomes unusable, producing poor yields. Thus the world started looking at sustainable farming as a solution that can prevent the loss of soil nutrients and conserve water too. In a layman's term, sustainable agriculture is an ecosystem approach to farming. This National Farmer's Day, on 23rd December, 2021, the Permaculture Division of Art of Living Bangalore, organized a special session on Sustainable Agriculture, - Ponds, Plants and Planet – a talk on Ecological Integral Farming through the Cownomics™ Methodology from Vaidic Srijan LLP. This podcast is the audio for the same session. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vaidicsrijan/message

Between effects of climate change, costs of inputs and production, and market hits, it is difficult for farmers to make gains outside of government subsidies. But what if farmers could help to mitigate climate change, increase the resiliency of the land, and put money in their pockets while doing so? In June 2020, a climate related bill was proposed...with strong bipartisan support in both the House and Senate. The Growing Climate Solutions Act would create a USDA program to encourage farmers, ranchers, and foresters to become an active part of the carbon market. It would encourage practices that create healthier soil, allowing more carbon to be captured in the ground, and paying out money from the carbon market to the farmer. In this episode we speak with Jenny Hopkinson, Senior Government Relations Representative for the National Farmer's Union. Jenny tells us about the variety of solutions that farmers can lead the way on, and why it is important for their input to help shape this legislation. There are different opinions on the concept of carbon markets, but perhaps this legislation can be seen as one small element within a holistic approach needed to address climate, farmer's needs, and improving our food system...all which need bipartisan support. Bob Quinn is an organic regenerative farmer from Big Sandy, Montana. He speaks with us about how our current mass agricultural model is not working & the benefits of returning to a nature based method of farming; for creating profits for farmers, offering a key to climate change, & preventing chronic disease in our population. This conversation is for farmers who need the entry points to transition to organic, and for all of you who enjoy EATING FOOD! Our food and how it is grown affects everything about our body and environment. This conversation gives a little "behind the scenes" look into what goes into that food, the people growing it, and what is at stake if we don't stand up for it. This summer, a bill was introduced in the House with bipartisan support. The bill is called the "Growing Climate Solutions Act" and it will push the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop programs for farmers and foresters to sequester carbon into their soils, and put money in their pockets for doing so. Stories for Action loves stories about collaboration and about healthy soils, so we see the potential for a positive start with this bill. This is the first of two episodes in which we will be looking at stories around this bill. In our next episode we will speak with the Senior Government Relations Representative from the National Farmer's Union. More on Bob Quinn:IG: @bobquinnorganicfarmerwww.bobquinnorganicfarmer.com #organic #farming #regenerative #soil #montana #farmer #food

The government requires most farmers to contribute to funds that are often used against their better interests. The results hurt family farms and lead to the increasingly brutal, mechanized treatment of animals. Legislation is pending that would require more transparency and purity of purpose for the use of what amounts to an $800 million yearly tax on agriculture. Joining Wayne Pacelle and Marty Irby to discuss this legislation is special guest Mike Eby, chairman of the National Dairy Producer's Organization. Eby promotes more humane and sustainable agriculture and has been published in The Daily Caller vocalizing the call for reform of the USDA's checkoff programs, and he is currently one of three candidates vying for president of the National Farmer's Union. Today on the show, the Saskatoon Co-op strikes continues, fighting a two-tiered wage system that would see new hires earn less. I was in Saskatoon this weekend and visited the Martensville Co-op picket line, which is a town 15 minutes outside city. There I talked to Lucy Flack Figueiredo, Secretary-Treasurer for UFCW 1400. And Don Kossick, activist and organizer in Saskatoon, co-op member and former UFCW negotiator, shares a bit of historical context for the co-op strike and what it might mean for the future of co-op going forward. Don produces a community radio program Making the Links on CFCR 90.5 FM. He also represents their interests on energy, climate and environmental issues. Would you like to improve soil health, water and air quality, wildlife and pollinator habitat or energy efficiency on your land? The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) offers farmers and ranchers technical and financial support to achieve these goals on working lands. And producers who have thought about CSP in the past may need to give the program another look; NRCS recently made changes that will make CSP work better for smaller and beginning farmers.
