Military veteran and entrepreneur Chad Grills is cautiously optimistic about the direction the country is heading under the Trump 2.0 administration due to the appetite for cutting regulations and reining in spending. As growth unlocks through policy changes, what other opportunities await those ambitious to build businesses in the United States? Reimagining capital allocation in the public and private sectors fuels innovation and development across many industries, especially technology. As the growth of AI, crypto, and blockchain open up trillion-dollar opportunities in places like Austin, Texas, places such as Silicon Valley lag behind, stiffled by regulations, taxes, and California's addiction to woke-ism. Today, I'm joined by Chad Grills, an entrepreneur, veteran, and visionary who's on a mission to reimagine how capital flows to startups. In our conversation, Chad shares his fascinating journey from small-town Maryland to military service in Iraq and Egypt, to becoming a writer and entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. We discuss the challenges facing young men in society, the shifting economic landscape, and how courage might be our most needed and contagious virtue. As usual I ask the three fundamental questions at the heart of The Impossible Network: Who are you as a human being? What made you the human you are? And what are you working to achieve? This is a conversation about faith, entrepreneurship, and creating a future where capital flows to those embodying virtue. Veteran and entrepreneur Chad Grills of National Capital League discusses his experience with Big Tech and how building anything meaningful and lasting will likely not come out of Silicon Valley or places like California. He explains how Silicon Valley was seeded by DOD, the Intelligence Community, and DARPA. The culture of Silicon Valley and most major cities will not allow anything original or good for humanity to emerge. He argues we have neither communism nor capitalism, but a monopolistic system that keeps the little guy out. He stresses a need for better governance, creating good culture, maintaining personal integrity, and is optimistic about the ability of America to reinvent itself. This is a cross-post of some interviews Rob did recently on two other podcasts — Mission Daily (from 2m) and The Good Life (from 1h13m). Some of the content will be familiar to regular listeners — but if you’re at all interested in Rob’s personal thoughts, there should be quite a lot of new material to make listening worthwhile. The first interview is with Chad Grills. They focused largely on new technologies and existential risks, but also discuss topics like: • Why Rob is wary of fiction • Egalitarianism in the evolution of hunter gatherers • How to stop social media screwing up politics • Careers in government versus business The second interview is with Prof Andrew Leigh - the Shadow Assistant Treasurer in Australia. This one gets into more personal topics than we usually cover on the show, like: • What advice would Rob give to his teenage self? • Which person has most shaped Rob’s view of living an ethical life? • Rob’s approach to giving to the homeless • What does Rob do to maximise his own happiness? Lecture 13 in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories lecture series. In this lecture, I present the second half of the story of Jacob, later Israel (he who struggles with God). After serving his time with his uncle Laban, and being deceived by him in the most karmic of manners, Jacob returns to his home country. On the way, he encounters an angel, or God Himself, wrestles through the night with Him. Successful in his encounter, he still sustains damage to his thigh, but earns the name Israel, and becomes the father of all those who to this day wrestle with God. Lecture 13 in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories lecture series. The Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories starts up after a two month hiatus with the first half of the story of Jacob, the founder of Israel ("those who wrestle with God"), the man who robs his brother of his birthright, is deceived into marrying the wrong woman, and dreams of a stairway to heaven, in the ancient Shamanic tradition. This week’s podcast features two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Christian Johnson and Chad Grills, disrupting the world of business. Johnson started Fotition a platform to unite brands people and charities to create a positive social outcome. He arrived at this idea by following his lifelong mantra, “creativity will save the world,” which lead him to a vocation that will leave a legacy. Grills, a former Army infantryman, took note of better ways to do things during deployments in Egypt and Iraq and channeled them into a sharing and trading service for business assets called Twist.com. He discusses the ways he has used the challenges of the military and life to overcome obstacles. Lessons: 1, The problem is the solution (permaculture principle). 2, Learn to love the word no. Turn it into an opportunity to overcome challenge. 3. Ask yourself if you are living up to your life’s mantra and serving the greater good. CREDITS Producer – Marion Abrams, Madmotion, llc. Rebuilding America with Chad Grills Chad Grills is a veteran, entrepreneur and the author of the currently-being-crowdfunded-book: Veterans: Don’t Reintegrate, Rebuild America. Chad and I happen to have a very similar background, and like myself, he is currently occupying his time with a cornucopia of projects. (bonus points for using the word cornucopia in a sentence) In today's broadcast, we touch on some seemingly random topics (but I promise - they make sense in context), including: Chad's military background, his new book, Antifragility, Post Traumatic Growth, and how to hit the ground running as a military veteran transitioning into the civilian world. By the way, Chad has less than two days left to fund his new book. I already have my copy preordered. You can support Chad and get your copy here. What Chad Grills and I Talk About: Chad's transition out of the military and into the civilian world Antifragility and how it applies to creating a better life All about the Regret Minimization Framework Post Traumatic Growth, or: how to turn trauma into momentum, regardless of where it comes from How to transform fear into prudence, pain into information, mistakes into initiation and desire into undertaking How to beat entrenched businesses as a bootstrapping underdog Why it's important to constantly run small experiments for personal and entrepreneurial growth Wise Words from Chad Grills on Rebuilding America: As Entrepreneurs, we need to give ourselves as much exposure to the upside while limiting the downside.
