New research from Brookings shows that rural counties with stronger access to post offices have more small‑business activity, even when broadband and other factors are the same. That suggests the postal network is doing far more economic heavy lifting than policymakers assume. We'll dig into the findings with Elena Patel, co-director of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center and a senior fellow in the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution. STARLINK: THE ECONOMIC ENGINE FOR MARS Colleague Eric Berger. To finance the massive costs of the Mars program, SpaceX developed Starlink, a constellation of thousands of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites designed to provide global internet. While previous attempts at LEO constellations were deemed impractical due to manufacturing challenges, SpaceX is now operating thousands of satellites, outpacing sovereign nations and competitors like Amazon's Kuiper. This aggressive expansion relies on the reusable Block 5 Falcon 9 boosters to launch dozens of satellites at once, generating the revenue necessary to build the Starship architecture. For decades, Democratic politicians have frustrated progressives by tinkering around the margins of policy while shying away from truly ambitious change. What happened to bold political vision on the left, and what shrunk the very horizons of possibility? In Thinking like an Economist, Elizabeth Popp Berman tells the story of how a distinctive way of thinking—an “economic style of reasoning”—became dominant in Washington between the 1960s and the 1980s and how it continues to dramatically narrow debates over public policy today. Introduced by liberal technocrats who hoped to improve government, this way of thinking was grounded in economics but also transformed law and policy. At its core was an economic understanding of efficiency, and its advocates often found themselves allied with Republicans and in conflict with liberal Democrats who argued for rights, equality, and limits on corporate power. By the Carter administration, economic reasoning had spread throughout government policy and laws affecting poverty, healthcare, antitrust, transportation, and the environment. Fearing waste and overspending, liberals reined in their ambitions for decades to come, even as Reagan and his Republican successors argued for economic efficiency only when it helped their own goals.A compelling account that illuminates what brought American politics to its current state, Thinking like an Economist also offers critical lessons for the future. With the political left resurgent today, Democrats seem poised to break with the past—but doing so will require abandoning the shibboleth of economic efficiency and successfully advocating new ways of thinking about policy. Elizabeth Popp Berman is Director and Richard H. Price Professor of Organizational Studies at the University of Michigan and the author of Creating the Market University: How Academic Science Became an Economic Engine (Princeton). Military veteran and entrepreneur Chad Grills is cautiously optimistic about the direction the country is heading under the Trump 2.0 administration due to the appetite for cutting regulations and reining in spending. As growth unlocks through policy changes, what other opportunities await those ambitious to build businesses in the United States? Reimagining capital allocation in the public and private sectors fuels innovation and development across many industries, especially technology. As the growth of AI, crypto, and blockchain open up trillion-dollar opportunities in places like Austin, Texas, places such as Silicon Valley lag behind, stiffled by regulations, taxes, and California's addiction to woke-ism. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageThe American economy is running like a race car at half speed, averaging just 1.8% GDP growth over the past two decades when it should be soaring at 3% or higher. This sluggish performance isn't inevitable – it's the result of specific policy choices that have weighed down our economic engine.Using a powerful race car analogy, we explore how tax cuts function as essential engine maintenance for the economy, while excessive government spending adds unnecessary weight that drags down performance. The current initiatives to trim bureaucratic waste through the Department of Government Efficiency represent steps in the right direction, but decades of congressional neglect in oversight responsibilities have allowed inefficiencies to multiply unchecked.Monetary policy plays a crucial role as the fuel for our economic engine. We examine Steve Forbes' compelling argument for returning to the gold standard in his book "Inflation" – a policy that historically coincided with America's greatest periods of prosperity and near-full employment. During the late 1800s under the classical gold standard, more wealth was created than in all previous centuries combined. Similarly, both the 1920s and 1960s saw unemployment rates below 5% when the dollar was pegged to gold. While the political will for such a fundamental reform seems absent today, the historical evidence suggests we should at least aim to keep inflation consistently below 3%.As we approach America's 250th anniversary in 2026, we have a unique opportunity to implement policies that will restore robust economic growth. By properly maintaining our economic engine through tax cuts, providing clean fuel through sound monetary policy, and removing excess weight through spending discipline, we can get America's race car humming at full capacity again – creating opportunity and advancement for all Americans. What policies do you think would best accelerate our economic growth?Key Points from the Episode:• Tax cuts are essential to fix the economic engine and bring investment back to America• Excessive government spending acts as dead weight on the economy, requiring immediate reduction• Agencies often stonewall congressional oversight, perpetuating waste and inefficiency• Steve Forbes advocates returning to the gold standard to eliminate inflation and stabilize currency• During gold standard periods, America experienced robust growth and near-full employment• Whipping inflation requires supply-side solutions rather than just interest rate manipulation• The US needs consistent 3%+ GDP growth annually, not the 1.8% average of the past two decades• Tariffs and trade policy are like tires - important but not the first priority for economic repair• The Federal Reserve's fuel quality (monetary policy) needs significant improvementBe sure to check out our show page at teammojoacademy.com, where you'll find everything discussed in this podcast as well as other great resources.Other resources: Want to leave a review? Ben Landau Taylor is a writer, historian, and one of the minds behind the Bismark Brief, whose research is focused on understanding the life cycle of civilizations. Much of his work has been informed by the work of Caroll Quigley, who in the 1970s put together a seven part framework for how civilizations are born, mature, and eventually go extinct. His model was one of an economic instrument of expansion, where the tools of growth defined the success of the empire - a direct contradiction to contemporary Arnold Toynbee's perspective that it wasn't economics that drove civilization - it was some kind of spiritual commitment to a common cause. The economic model seemed more reasonable to Taylor, who then wanted to know - was it simply applicable to European history, or was this a more universal model? We talk about the ways that the rise and fall of civilizations generalizes across history, the place our own civilization is in the progression, and what the future might hold. Today, Jim and Greg discuss Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin divorcing Virginia from California's EV standards, what the latest job report does and doesn't tell us about the state of the economy, and the sad, steady decline of the Star Wars franchise and Hollywood products in general.First, they react to Gov. Youngkin's announcement that Virginia will no longer follow California's EV policies, jumping ship as California changes their regulations. They criticize the law that tied Virginia's policy to California's in the first place, and they celebrate this victory for consumer choice.Next, they analyze the May jobs report, which boasts of 272,000 new jobs, though unemployment is now at four percent. Jim warns that, whatever the trends in job creation and unemployment may be, the real economic problem to watch out for is inflation. Finally, they lament the deterioration in quality of the more recent Star Wars movies and series. They roll their eyes at the latest series being rolled out, Acolyte, whose stars promise that it will be "the gayest" Star Wars series yet.
