Ben Rennie is on the show today. A jack of many trades, from life as a prodigious rising star of Australian cricket during one of it most remarkable periods of success, to Dolce and Gabana red carpet events in Milan with Brazilian Ronaldo to starting and re-starting business endeavours to becoming the Chair of Design Declares Australia, attempting to quick describe Ben and his life is no easy feat. From walking away from the national game with everything in front of him to leaving a gig with bank executives and then pulling a professional geographic, Ben has done what I know many aspire to - change. I'm fascinated by the tools and practices that exist that sustainability professionals don't use - our reports and our frameworks and our LinkedIn posts have resulted in edge-case incremental wins by in large, all while environmental and social indicators of health, justice and security have eroded year on year. As someone from a radically different background, with a different mindset and a different approach to making an impact, I wanted to get Ben on the show to explore how I and all of us can understand creativity, what creative confidence is and the ways all of us can develop a broader set of tools to do the work we attempt valiantly day in day out.Ben's just published one of my favourite books in a long time - Lessons in Creativity: Stories and Strategies to Cultivate Your Creative Confidence. You'll hear how in this chat how the book's coming into existence is one long story of serendipitous moment after serendipitous moment, but so was my discovery of this book and then how much it affected me. I came across it a few weeks ago having attended a previous guests book launch - James Bradley - and Ben's book grabbed my attention. I checked out the title at home and realised Ben was described as a cricketer of rare distinction and wondered how someone who came through a system I was familiar with - stifled, conformist, eroding of every positive idea of self and amplifier of every insecurity, could write a book about creativity and live a life of twists and turns where making leaps from context to context was possible. I needed to read this book, and boy did I relate. It's part memoir, part guidebook part trade book and it's got something for everyone. In this conversation Ben and I traverse his experience as a seeker, his views on risk, fear and doubt, and how living for freedom is a transformative perspective to make decisions from. We chat about how he's upended and re-designed his life four times over, the role of connection, family, friendship and trust, placing faith in one's own abilities and deciding to pursue what's in your heart over prioritising what our society and culture expects of us and the way projections can cause us to shrink and retreat. We get into Ben's own progression to becoming a vocal and strong advocate for real impact and sustainability in his work and career, what Design Declares is and what we can all learn from a protocol of minimum standards deliberately designed to halt and reverse climate calamity.I absolutely loved this chat with Ben. I can't wait to spend more time with him, and to see where he goes next. He is extremely easy to find online - his website is benrennie.com while renystudio.com is where to find his design agency. He's a great follow on instagram too, so check him out and let him know how you found this chat and go and get his book.Til next time, thanks for listening.Events are live and more are coming - follow on Humanitix.Follow on Send me a messageThanks for listening. Today's show is with James Bradley - renowned Australian author who is returning to the show a year after releasing what was one of my favourite books of 2024 - Deep Water, Life in the Ocean. James' books have been nominated and awarded prizes all over the country, and in 2021 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for "service to literature as a writer'. He's written for the Guardian, The Monthly, The Saturday Paper and The Conversation. His work is incisive and always brilliantly written, and at a time when it's difficult to keep up or fully appreciate what is happening in our world, I always enjoy seeing James' work appear whether in book form, his essays or newspaper contributions.James is on the show today to talk about his upcoming book - Landfall. A return to more familiar territory for him of fiction after his first non fiction effort in Deep Water, this is anything but a normal read. Blending the science of climate change in a radically altered Sydney landscape in a medium term timescale, Landfall is a crime story where impending disaster, omnipresent surveillance technology, social dysfunction and forced migration are all background characters. This is a story of kindness, heartbreak, fear and hope. I loved reading it and I'm looking forward to getting to the launch of Landfall in Sydney on April 29 - search for James Bradley Landfall and Gleebooks to get your ticket too.James is a brilliant story teller. Landfall is another contribution on how we can think about time and futures, story and the stories we tell ourselves about the future, the practice of writing, writing as a tool and what all of this means for any and all of us who think in or use words as a medium of attempting change.Speaking to James and how he weaved kindness into Landfall, and with April's substack being on the theme of unity, this quote from Marielle Heller is very apt - “With all of the bad things that are happening in the world right now, I think we need a message of togetherness and true unity. I believe that starts with personal reflection and then we can find kindness toward each other.”Til next time, thanks for listeningEvents are live and more are coming - follow on Humanitix.Follow on LinkedIn, Substack and Instagram. Today's show is delivered with Altiorem. Martin Van Buren is known as the "little magician." If he was a magician, he cast a powerful spell. The two party system he championed and helped establish has ruled the United States for two centuries and Democratic party he co-founded is the oldest American political party alive today.Historian and Journalist James Bradley, author of the new book Martin Van Buren: America's First Politician discusses how Martin Van Buren took over New York politics, and then American politics, to transform the American political system forever.Support the show

Some say that Martin Van Buren was one of themost remarkable politicians—not only of his time, but in American presidential history. Co-editor of the Martin Van Buren Papers, James M. Bradley writes this new biography of the 8th president of the United States . Van Buren was the first chief executive not born a British citizen, and the first to use the party system to chart his way from tavern-keeper's son to the pinnacle of power. Additionally, he was the principal architect of the party system and one of the founders of the Democratic Party, he came to dominate New York-then the most influential state in the Union-and was instrumental in electing Andrew Jackson president. Van Buren's skills as a political strategist were unparalleled—and was coined the "Little Magician"—winning him a series of high-profile offices: US senator, New York's governor, US secretary of state, US vice president, and finally theWhite House. In his rise to power, Van Buren sought consensus and conciliation, bending to the wishes of slave interests and complicit in the dispossession of America's Indigenous population, two of the darkest chapters in American history. This first full-scale portrait charts Van Buren's ascent from a tavern in the Hudson Valley to the presidency, concluding with his late-career involvement in an antislavery movement. Offering vivid profiles of the day's leading figures including Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John Calhoun, John Quincy Adams, DeWitt Clinton, and James Polk, Bradley's book depicts the struggle for power in the tumultuous decadesleading up to the Civil War.About the AuthorJames M. Bradley is co-editor of the Martin Van Buren Papers, based at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. He is an Adjunct Instructor in the public history program at State University of New York at Albany and was the Senior Project Editor of Encyclopedia of New York City, published by Yale University Press.          For more info on the book click HERE

James Bradley, an award winning author of fiction has just released his latest title, a non-fiction book entitled Deep Water: the world in the ocean.  It is a "blend of history, nature writing, and environmental science" giving readers insights into the mysteries of the ocean and "humanity's complex connections to the seas."  In one passage, James describes the surprisingly complex life cycle of Antarctic krill, its vast biomass often visible from space, and the source of energy for so many species including fish, penguins, and whales. Yet krill are declining in key areas that threaten the entire polar food chain for reasons from the obvious, such as overfishing in critical habits, to the species' more complicated and dependent relationship on winter sea ice. Sea ice that has dramatically declined in recent years due to climate change. The book celebrates the countless researchers past and present working to unlock the ocean's deepest secrets. Starlight sprinkles down on Earth like raindrops in a summer shower. And like raindrops, the sprinkles of starlight can appear to change direction. This effect is known as aberration of starlight. It was discovered three centuries ago by an astronomer who was trying to measure the distance to Eltanin, the brightest star of Draco, the dragon. James Bradley was looking for the star’s parallax. The idea is to observe a star when Earth is at opposite sides of its orbit. That causes stars that are close to us to shift position relative to stars that are farther away. Measuring the size of that shift reveals the star’s distance. Bradley did see a shift in Eltanin’s position. But it wasn’t related to the star’s distance. Instead, it was caused by Earth’s orbital speed. The effect is like watching raindrops fall from inside a car. If you’re sitting still, the raindrops might appear to fall straight down. But if you’re cruising down the highway, they appear to come toward you at an angle. The raindrops aren’t moving any differently – you are. The same thing happens with starlight. Thanks to Earth’s motion around the Sun, the “drops” of light appear to come in from different angles at different times of year. That causes a star to appear to shift position – the result of the aberration of starlight. Eltanin is high in the north-northeast at nightfall. The moderately bright star stands to the left of brilliant Vega. Script by Damond Benningfield

In the first half, writer and critic James Bradley shared awe-inspiring observations about our oceans, and how they're connected to the whole tapestry of life on Earth from the surface to the depths. He noted how the Apollo astronauts' photos of Earth depict it as a blue planet, a stunning testament to the oceans' prominence and importance. They drive and sustain life on the planet, and moderate and regulate temperature, he remarked. Bradley spoke about the intricate nature of fish and their sensory abilities. Specifically, he highlighted how dolphins use sonar as a fantastic detection system to view things in the water. "If a dolphin is looking at you with sonar, it can look straight through your body in a completely different way to us," he added.More and more science is revealing that fish in general are highly social and intelligent. They communicate, look after their young, have emotional eyes, and some can even recognize themselves in a mirror, he cited. Bradley bemoaned the detrimental impact of human activities on marine life, such as the ever-growing problem of plastic pollution. He joined Dr. Jennifer Lavers on her expedition to the Cocos Islands to study the harmful effects of plastic debris. Bradley also touched on how the oceans serve as the engine of the global economy, with 11 billion tons of goods moving around on container ships, as well as natural disasters related to oceans like tsunamis.------------Toni Ghazi, also known as 'The Antarean-Heart,' is a channel and spiritual guide, who works through the Praying Mantis beings and the Antares Stargate to bring messages of unconditional love. In the latter half, he spoke about his personal awakening, and the powerful messages he has received. The image of a praying mantis first came to him during a past-life regression, and then in 2020, he saw several "light ships," which "would spin as pure light, and then...become this sphere that was metallic." He recognized that this was the ship of the beings he had begun communicating with. According to a reading he had with Debbie Solaris, Ghazi had a previous life as one of the Praying Mantis beings, and has come to Earth in his current incarnation to assist in humanity's ascension. The Antares Stargate, he explained, is a mysterious portal that connects us to interdimensional and extraterrestrial beings. He has gone through it during channeling sessions and said, "It's really these infinite openings within openings...of this intelligent consciousness energy." Rather than a doorway, you become a form of energy interacting with the whole fabric of the universe, [and] all parallel universes, he added. Ghazi also described his creation of unique crystal skulls modeled after the Praying Mantis beings, which he believes may hold codes for ascension. During the last hour, he channeled the beings, and they briefly spoke through him, detailing how we are all multi-dimensional and composed of frequency and vibration.

#257Two extraordinary findings have been unearthed about our ancient ancestors. The first is a discovery from a cave in Australia – evidence of what could be the world's oldest ritual, practised continuously for 12,000 years. And the second is the discovery that the world's oldest evidence of storytelling may be even older than we thought. We may be able to mine for nickel using flowers. The method is much more sustainable than traditional mining and is actually being used by some companies. Is it enough to turn mining green?Quantum communication is going wireless. In Lee's own words: I was born and raised in Concord, NC.  Just Northeast of Charlottle, it was a town of 25,000 back then.  As long as I can remember, music was around.  Whether it be the turntables or 8 tracks; where my older brothers played rock and roll of the 60s & 70s, Dad listened to older country artists or Mom's Pontiac Bonneville, which seemed to always have the hits playing through it's car stereo from either 61AM Big Ways, 95FM WROQ or 1100 WBT-AM…Music was always a comforting companion.       Not coming from a particularly musical family other than them playing the radio, the drum bug came from the next door neighbor playing and then taking it from there.  I was playing with records by 8-9 years old; began school band in 7th grade with the natural progression through high school playing in marching, jazz and symphonic bands throughout.       Since music was not viewed in my family as something you pursued as a career, I studied English Literature & Writing at Pfeiffer University until my senior year in 1990-91 when long time friend and a musical mentor, Rick Lee, called and said, "I'm forming a new band and you're the drummer."  This was the beginnings of my music career and the 2019 Carolina Beach Music Hall Of Fame band, Too Much Sylvia.       After leaving TMS in 1994, I played with a few different bands out of Charlotte and all around the East Coast through 1996.  In September 1996, a weeklong trip to Nashville, TN put the hook in and I moved to Music City on January 11, 1997.  Fortunately, I got club and road work pretty quickly while learning constantly along the way.  The idea was to make a living while seeing the world and that plan came to fruition over the years backing artists like Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Heidi Newfield, Kelly Pickler, Loverboy, Kendell Marvel and, now, Hank Williams Jr.  Also, to be able to play and share time with some of the finest musicians & people along the way has just been magic. It's a ride I can't get off of...Nor do I want to.      Along with time on the road with Hank Jr., I offer drum/percussion tracks to any clients out of the "Boom Boom Drum Room", do club/showcase/session work around town and spend time caring for my family.  It's never boring and music is STILL a comforting companion.     Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!!   Some Things That Came Up:    -2:00 Moved to Nashville Jan 11, 1997 along with Jim Riley and Pat McDonald  -3:40 Followed the band Sugar Creek, who played on “Star Search” -4:10 Joining the melodic rock band “Too Much Sylvia” right before Nirvana exploded -6:15 Carolina beach music  -7:00 Checked out Nashville in August of 1996.

Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! We cover all recent stories at the intersection of sports and law. Jason (@Jason_Morrin) and Evan (@Evan_Mattel21) break down the latest. George Gervin filed a lawsuit against Ralph Lauren for trademark infringement, false endorsement, and utilizing his name, image, and likeness without his permission. (2:25) Ralph Lauren released a shoe called the "Gervin Mid" which resembled the Nike shoes that Gervin wore, called the Nike Blazer, when he played in the NBA and was sponsored by Nike. Gervin's attorneys sent cease and desist letters to Ralph Lauren and alleged that Ralph Lauren claimed that they used the name "Gervin" because it sounded good and that they were unaware that Gervin was a well-known NBA player. Gervin is claiming $2 million in damages. Former Philadelphia Eagles captain Chris Maragos recently won $43.5 million in his medical malpractice lawsuit against his orthopedic doctors. (6:50) Maragos suffered a torn meniscus and needed surgery which was conducted by James Bradley with Rothman Orthopaedics. Following the surgery, Maragos claimed that he was rehabilitated on an accelerated plan, despite an MRI still showing a slight tear. The injury ultimately resulted as career-ending for Maragos. These were doctors separate from the NFL and Eagles' organization, but this case proves to be a cautionary precedent for professional athletes' medical care, treatment, and rehabilitation. Mike Clevinger, who signed with the White Sox, has been accused of domestic violence and child abuse by his ex-partner Olivia Finestead. (13:03) She and Clevinger have a 10-month old daughter together. She posted claims on her Instagram account that Clevinger allegedly threw an iPad at her while she was pregnant, slapped and strangled her, and allegedly threw used chewing tobacco at their daughter. She also went on to allege that Clevinger was a drug addict. Finestead went on a radio show in Chicago to speak out against Clevinger defending himself during Spring Training. Clevinger threatened legal action against the radio station 670 The Score for bringing Finestead on the show. Jason and Evan also dive into their highly touted NHL trade deadline predictions. In this episode, a joint Lillian Goldman Law Library book talk-Digging a Hole production that took place in front of a live audience on January 23, 2023, we interview Yale Law student Jake Mazeitis and Wick Cary Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma Andrew Porwancher on their book The Prophet of Harvard Law: James Bradley Thayer and His Legal Legacy. We begin by discussing just who exactly James Bradley Thayer was and his contributions to the structure of American constitutional law. We dive into his intellectual and personal legacies, his litany of students who shaped American jurisprudence, and ruminate on the student-teacher relationship. Our guests develop an idea of what it means to be Thayerian, and how we all live with Thayer's legacy – and even praise/accuse Sam of being a bona fide Thayerian. Finally, we discuss Thayer's democratic motivations and the limits of his legal realism before turning it over to the audience for a few questions.
