Kamal Ravikant has trekked to one of the highest base camps in the Himalayas, earned the US Army Infantry patch, walked 550 miles across Spain, lived in Paris, and bungee jumped out of a perfectly good hot air balloon. Kamal is the only non-black, non-woman member of the Black Women’s writers’ group. Mr. Ravikant won a San Francisco-wide modeling contest, gotten drunk on the same barstool as Hemingway, co-founded a company with the guy who wrote the first browser, and been fortunate enough to work with some of the smartest investors and engineers in Silicon Valley. Kamal has written 3 books, the latest, Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It, went viral. Amazing people all over shared it online and on social media. They bought copies for friends and family. They wrote heartfelt reviews. For some, this book literally saved their lives. For others, it was the first time they ever loved themselves. Thanks to today’s sponsor, LinkedIn Jobs! I've got nothing but love for stories of personal metamorphosis, perhaps the most predominant theme of this show. The underdog everyman meets unforeseen obstacles. Brought to his knees, he's compelled to seek deep within. Meeting fate, strength is somehow found in a mystical power greater than himself. He leverages it to evolve into something greater and more authentic. Emerging self-actualized, he then shares his newfound strength, wisdom and experience for the benefit of others. We call it the hero’s journey.Archetypal and totemic, it’s a most powerful narrative that unites, connecting with something indelible and universal within us all.Over the years, I’ve hosted many flavors of physical triumph. From Olympic medalists to arctic explorers, I celebrate the arc of the athletic warrior. But life’s greatest passage isn’t physical. It’s not free-soloing El Capitan, crossing Antarctica, or running ultramarathons in Patagonia. Our most challenging voyage is learning how to love ourselves. No one embodies this genus of the hero’s journey better than Kamal Ravikant. To be clear, Kamal has more than earned his spot as a respected adventurer living beyond convention. From modest beginnings, he’s trekked to one of the highest base camps in the Himalayas, earned his US Army Infantry patch, walked 550 miles across Spain, and meditated with Tibetan monks in the Dalai Lama’s monastery.Professionally, he’s done it all too, founding a company with the guy who wrote the first browser. From launching startups to managing venture capital funds, Kamal has spent the better part of his career working alongside some of the smartest investors and engineers in Silicon Valley, writing books in his free time. But Kamal's most transformative experience has been the simple act of learning how to love himself. Why is it so hard for us?I first heard about Kamal by way of his frequent appearances on our mutual and beloved friend James Altucher’s podcast.Compelled by his honesty and vulnerability, I felt myself holding space with someone who embodied an important wisdom. A wisdom I lacked. Reflexively, I picked up Kamal's latest book, Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It.Spiritual and emotional growth is my jam and yer I never thought much about self-love. So I freely admit I met Kamal's book with a healthy dose of initial skepticism. However, the read ignited a realization that I continue to harbor unhealed wounds. Simple, straightforward and profound, I discovered practices not just helpful, but truly transformative. I wanted to know more.Today we unpack Kamal's heroic journey of the heart. It’s a conversation about his trials and his triumphs. His divine moment. The path of self-discovery that followed. And what he learned surviving a recent near death experience. It’s about how he learned to love himself. The simple routine he deploys to maintain it. And why this practice is essential to living an examined, self-actualized life of presence, purpose and contentment. For the stoics and skeptics, I implore you to set aside whatever resistance you may be feeling right now. And give this one a shot with an open mind and heart.Note: This conversation was recorded pre-pandemic (February 12, 2020), thus there is no coronavirus reference. Nonetheless, Kamal's wisdom is timeless. Moreover, the practices we discuss are powerful tools of self-discovery than can prove transformative as we navigate this challenging time. The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Kamal’s vulnerability is refreshing. I love this conversation and the friendship it has birthed. I hope it serves you as it did me.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google Podcasts Thanks to this week’s sponsorsNavitas Organics: Great people. Real estate is a very competitive business and the real estate podcast area is a very competitive category within podcast directories. Brad Larsen shares his successes, authority, and opportunities that have come because of his podcast. Brad talks about creating The Property Management Mastermind, Property Management Mastermind Show and The Property Management Conference. His story, advice, and humility are truly inspiring. Brad’s advice is very helpful and timely for everybody. Brad Larsen was born and raised in Iowa – his parents were both school teachers. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM and was commissioned as a 2LT in the US Army Infantry in 1996. He then graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa in 1998. He was able to earn a baseball scholarship for both schools as a shortstop. Brad later earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix in San Antonio, TX in 2011. After serving on active duty in the Army as an officer in the Infantry, Brad left the military as a Captain in 2002 and moved to San Antonio to pursue his interests in real estate. He has been managing single-family homes since 2004. Brad is a member of the San Antonio Board of Realtors (SABOR), Texas Association of Realtors (TAR), National Association of Realtors (NAR), and the National Association of Residential Property Managers (NARPM®). Brad has been licensed since 2003 and has earned top honors in real estate to include the Platinum Top 50 award for agents in San Antonio. Brad is married to Leah Larsen and has two children.  Brad is so selfless even though at times he tries to argue differently and invites everyone to come on this journey and learn along with him. This episode is packed full of great advice and tips for real estate, podcasting, and life in general.  Show Notes: [03:37] Brad shares what led him into the world of real estate.  [04:06] Brad created the Property Management Mastermind where property managers can share ideas, thoughts, and collaborations on a national scale. Then he created his podcast, The Property Management Mastermind Show.  [05:03] Brad’s podcast has opened up a lot of doors and opportunities including other business ventures and speaking gigs.  [06:13] Brad looks at podcasting as an audio blog.  [07:11] Brad shares how his business looked before his podcast and how it has expanded his business ventures.  [08:43] Brad started a Facebook group and now has 8,600 members. This is another advertising avenue for getting the podcast shows out to more people.  [10:09] Another opportunity the podcast has facilitated is a national annual conference called The Property Management Mastermind Conference.  [10:32] All of his business ventures have stemmed from simply starting a podcast.  [13:03] Brad really wants to improve and benefit the real estate industry.  [15:40] On his podcast he tries to interview folks that he would want to understand better because likely others will also.  [16:49] Brad started his own podcast so he could answer the questions he wanted to answer for the community. It was a better option for him than a webinar.  [18:42] The podcast was a giant advertisement for his in-person live conference.  [20:04] Brad’s next live conference, Property Management Mastermind Conference, will be in March 2021 in Las Vegas.  [21:49] Brad has a Facebook Live every day to discuss current issues and how they affect renters and property managers.  [24:13] The current issues will be short-lived, so we should have a quick spike back up when this is over.  [26:08] The dollars are in the change. We are in the middle of change, so how we embrace it is going to be part of our attitude. We need to make it work for us.  [28:29] If home prices go down, investors will create the bottom. It creates the basement and that it is as low as the market goes.  [31:44] Brad recommends investing in residential single-family homes.   [34:12] Brad has sponsors for his podcast that pay monthly or annually for commercials spots. This has helped to offset the cost of quality productions like Pro Podcast Solutions.  [36:55] Finding the next good guest has been Brad’s biggest podcast challenge.  [37:25] Brad suggest putting out content that is timeless, so people can go out to it years down the road.  [39:24] Brad got used to podcasting, by creating Youtube narrations and videos for his real estate business.  [40:12] Brad’s advice is to look at the competition. Brad looked to see how many podcasts were talking about property management before he started.  [41:19] Don’t let your fear of podcasting intimidate you.  [42:33] The goal of his podcast is just a bigger advertising campaign. He is a long way, but he is getting on the right track.  [46:02] Brad suggests checking out one of the first episodes of his podcast. His episode with Tim Melton has been the most downloaded episode.  [46:21] Brad has found that doing live interviews in a remote location is very difficult, so he utilizes Zoom to record his podcast episodes.  [48:13] Darrell's Takeaways: Brad’s advice was really helpful and timely for everybody. He gave great advice for those who are landlords, tenants, and even those looking to get into income property. Brad recommended going hyperlocal with your podcast to really get involved with your community. He talked about using his podcast as a way to create opportunities and his authority. Because of his authority, he was able to create the Property Management Mastermind Conference. He is seeing a lot of success with his conference because of the authority he is establishing because of his relationships and podcast. Brad gave a tip to try and make content that is timeless. It is more important now to think about this then it was a month ago. Sometimes it is a good move to create content about current issues and sometimes it is not. Make sure you are using terminology, phrases, and titles that are not going to date and make your content seem like it is no longer relevant in the long term.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions Property Management Mastermind Property Management Mastermind Show Rent Werx Property Management Mastermind on Facebook Property Management Mastermind Conference Bigger Pockets Brrrr Technique Robert Kiyosaki Brad’s episode with Tim Melton

Of the hundreds of podcast interviews I’ve done, few are more potent and powerful than my discussion with Kamal Ravikant. An infamous Silicon Valley entrepreneur, eclectic millionaire, and paradoxical human (who is equal parts hustler and mystic), Kamal Ravikant’s book, Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It, transformed my life and helped me achieve unprecedented success and fulfillment. And in our interview, he will flip your world upside down, change everything you ever thought you knew about success, and reveal why self-love is the key to…well, everything. Let’s dive in. Who is Kamal Ravikant? Kamal Ravikant is one of the world’s most interesting entrepreneurs, whose initial success was found in the Silicon Valley. In addition to his entrepreneurial success, Kamal has also trekked the Himalayas, meditated with Tibetan monks in the Dalai Lama’s monastery, served in the US Army Infantry, and walked 550 miles across Spain. He is also the author of Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It, Live Your Truth, and Rebirth. Favorite Success Quote “Destiny favors the committed.” “Hater’s gonna hate!” ~Taylor Swift Key Points from my Interview with Kamal Ravikant 1. Commit To Yourself  Making and keeping a commitment to oneself is the ultimate measure of a man’s success. We live in a society full of liars and fakes. And I do not mean that people are maliciously seeking to manipulate their way to the top or intentionally putting on a facade of success and gravitas. We live in a society where the greatest lies that are told are the ones that we tell ourselves. “This time it will be different.” “This is the year that I will quit smoking/doing drugs/watching porn/standing on the sidelines” “This is the year where I will take control of my life and start my own business.” We live in a society that lies to itself to sedate the pain of staying the same. But what if things could be different? What if we were able to make commitments and follow through on them? What if we valued ourselves and our own word so much that the very thought of backing out of a commitment that we made to ourselves was unthinkable? It is possible. But it starts by learning to value yourself and the commitments that you are making. It starts with integrity, with giving a damn about your word and your own personal dignity. And more importantly, as we will discuss in a minute, it starts by loving yourself. 2. Execution, not Ideation is the Key to Success Everyone has a great idea. Everyone has an idea that could make them a billionaire (or at least much wealthier than they already are). So why are there so many broke and impoverished people? Especially in a country like the U.S. where there are so many opportunities? Because ideas  are not worth a damn thing. Only execution is. The greatest investors in the world never bet on the idea, just the team behind it. If you want to succeed, stop worrying about what you are going to do, and start worrying about how you are going to do it and who you are going to become so that you can achieve your goals. Forget all of your ideas. Instead, worry about transforming yourself into the kind of person who can execute and bring ideas to life. 3. Loving Yourself is Selfless So often people read the titles of books like “Love Yourself” and “Choose Yourself” and they think “Wow! What selfless a-holes these people are” But what they never stop to realize is that the greatest narcissists in the world are the people who loathe themselves. If you love yourself and take care of #1, then you enter into the world from a place of peace, joy, and love and therefore you are able to pour out into others and be the light that others can follow. If you do not love yourself, then you enter the world from a place of scarcity, fear, and anxiety, ensuring that the only impact you have is to negatively affect and drain those around you. What is more selfless? Making sure that you are taken care of so that you can take care of others? Or focusing all of your energy on others until you are burnt out, angry, and depressed? 4. If I Loved Myself at a Level 10 What Would I Do? As you face different challenges and choices in your everyday life, you should view every trial, question, and challenge through one lens and one lens only. “If I loved myself at a level 10 of 10, what would I do?” This question simplifies even the most complicated of questions and makes it very easy for you to figure out the best solutions. If you loved yourself at a 10/10 would you smoke that cigarette or abstain? If you loved yourself at a 10/10 would you watch another porn flick, wasting your day and poisoning your sex life, or would you find more constructive ways to spend your time? If you loved yourself at a 10/10 would you stay in that toxic relationship or bite the bullet and move on to someone who loves and appreciates you? If you loved yourself at a 10/10 would you continue living a sedated, numb life, doing just enough to get by, or would you stand up and pursue your dreams, leave “desire” on the sidelines and be a man of action? If you loved yourself at a 10/10 what would you do? Self love is the epitome of groundedness and your first step to becoming the man you need to be. 5. Vulnerability is Where True Power Lies We are all broken. From Bill Gates to Warren buffet to Kamal to Me. No one is perfect and no one has everything figured out. We are all on this journey called life together, and we are all blessed to be faced with different challenges and different successes. And it is your privilege, no… your responsibility to share the story of your challenges and triumphs with the world. You never know when one simple blog post, when one video, or when one conversation that you have will change someone’s life. Opening up, being vulnerable, and sharing your story could be the difference between a friend committing suicide and a friend radically changing their life and pursuing their dreams. Some of you may feel a bit uncomfortable sharing your story and being vulnerable with the people in your life. But you have to remember that your story has power. It has the power to attract people into your life who can help you on your journey and it has the power to reach people you may never know and radically transform their journey. Do not live a life that is so selfish that you deprive yourself of the joy you will experience by impacting the world with your vulnerability.

Why Kamal doesn’t invest in ideas, he invests in people, and therefore the kind of Founders that he looks to back. The dangers he sees time and time again when companies raise too much money. Why Kamal always likes to visit companies before investing in them and what he is looking out for. His advice for people who don’t know ‘people’ and can’t get in on insider networks. Flags and Flaws to look for in Startups and how to vet opportunities. Plus listen through to the end to hear some excellent insights on becoming a better person, the power of commitment and how he approaches relationships. Craig Handley has never been afraid of clowns. He likes clowns. Craig will tell you that he is handsome, humble, and smart, and people generally agree that "Yes, he is a smart guy" and "No, winning second place in the beauty contest in Monopoly does not make you handsome." He is an entrepreneur, which means so many things. He has done some speaking, some teaching, and mentoring. He is a philanthropist, having given away close to $1 million in the last seven years. He really views himself as an entertainer and musician who moonlights as CEO of his $13 million to $15 million company, ListenTrust, which was named #1 in Business Products and Services (#27 overall) on Inc. magazine's 500/5000 list and employs over 1,000 really awesome people. He believes in "living life like an extreme sport." As such, he has cage dived with great white sharks and rappelled down Table Mountain in South Africa, driven the Baja 500 trail in Mexico, hiked through the jungles of Malaysia, and in Iceland he snowmobiled across a live volcano, swam in the Blue Lagoon, and dove in the famed Silfra Fissure, which is the only dive site in the world where your dive is in the crack between two continental plates. He is the eighty-fifth civilian in the world ever to jump out of a plane from over 32,000 feet (HALO dive). He is bold. He pretended to be security in San Francisco to meet Richard Branson and wrapped a twenty-dollar bill around his business card during the meeting. He's since been to Necker Island several times and has been kissed by the billionaire entrepreneur as a thank-you for the twenty dollars. He is a champion of all men, based on his undefeated record when donning the sumo suit in Richard's famous Beach Olympics. He's met Ringo Starr and bumped into Paul McCartney before security escorted him back to his table while trying to get a selfie; and in Calgary, he had a scarf blessed while meeting the Dalai Lama (which he has since misplaced). He has partied with Akon, Snoop Dogg, and many other celebrities who asked him for his autograph (because they thought he starred in Vikings or Game of Thrones and he did not correct their thinking). In over twenty years of doing business, he has learned that you cannot grow a business beyond your own personal growth. This mentality has caused him to invest in growth, to seek out mentors, and in general to search for growth opportunities as if he is a broken man in desperate need of fixing (which he very well may be). He served five years in the US Army Infantry during the first Iraq war, leaving with an honorable discharge. Handley studied voice and piano in college. He has written and produced hundreds of songs, from rap to pop to ballads to humorous parodies, and has even opened for Coolio and hosted the Adult Entertainment Awards. In 2010 he turned down a record deal because it would have been "a pay cut" from his profitable businesses--and the required tour schedule didn't leave him enough time for his business or family. He has six kids (I know). Josh is the oldest and isn't biologically his, but does that really matter? Drew, Zachary, Rebekah (who will tell you she is the favorite), Allyson (who will also tell you Rebekah is the favorite but secretly believes she is), and finally little Lilly Rosa, a late but welcome addition to the party. He and his business partner are the founders of ListenTrust, a global award-winning organization in the call center industry. With over two decades of experience, they have been recognized by Inc. magazine's 500/5000 list and manage over a thousand employees in both the US and Mexico.

BookSpeak Network Sunbury Press Books Show Lawrence Knorr hosts author and Vietnam veteran Joe Fair. Joe's best-selling book Call Sign Dracula has just been released on audio and has sold well in paperback and ebook formats. Joe was a member of the Black Scarves of the Big Red One.  Call Sign Dracula provides an outstanding, valuable and worthy in-depth look into the life of a US Army Infantry soldier serving with the famed 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) in Vietnam.  It is a genuine, firsthand account of a one-year tour that shows how a soldier grew and matured from an awkward, bewildered, inexperienced, eighteen-year-old country “bumpkin” from Kentucky to a tough, battle-hardened, fighting soldier.  You will laugh, cry and stand in awe at the true life experiences shared in this memoir.  The awfulness of battle, fear beyond description, the sorrow and anguish of losing friends, extreme weariness, the dealing with the scalding sun, torrential rain, cold, heat, humidity, insects and the daily effort just to maintain sanity were struggles faced virtually every day.  And yet, there were the good times. There was the coming together to laugh, joke, and share stories from home. There were the warmth and compassion shown by men to each other in such an unreal environment.   You will see where color, race or where you were from had no bearing on the tight-knit group of young men that was formed from the necessity to survive.  What a “bunch” they were! ... then the return to home and all the adjustments and struggles to once again fit into a world that was now strange and uncomfortable. Call Sign Dracula is an excellent and genuine memoir of an infantry soldier in the Vietnam War.

Are you connected with your purpose on a soul level? Are the things you are holding on to, that are robbing you of your ability to say “yes” to life? Today’s conversation with Kamal Ravikant takes a deep dive into forgiveness and following your heart.  Many times, business is all about the processes and the results and the heart gets overlooked. We may even keep ourselves busy with business goals and achievements so that we don’t have to deal with matters of the heart. Kamal’s new book uses a fascinating fable to share specific steps for forgiveness, including forgiveness of yourself! Embracing that forgiveness will allow you to follow your heart.  Kamal Ravikant has been fortunate enough to have some amazing experiences in his life so far. He’s trekked to one of the highest base camps in the Himalayas, meditated with Tibetan monks in the Dalai Lama's monastery, earned his US Army Infantry patch, walked 550 miles across Spain, lived in Paris, been the only non-black, non-woman member of the Black Women's writers' group, written several bestsellers, held the hands of dying patients, and worked with some of the best people in Silicon Valley. But his most transformative experience has been the simple act of loving himself.    In today’s episode we learn:   How Kamal’s background set the stage for his book How he got into the startup culture of Silicon Valley with no prior experience Rejection letters helped shape Kamal as a writer - the best gift he could have gotten Why his first self-published book was successful after 10 years of rejections Rebirth is life altering and mind expanding….find out why How Kamal’s own pilgrimage to India after his Father’s death relates to the book A non-religious pilgrimage that changes lives The 3 stages of a relationship and how it helps our perspective Soft skills like forgiveness and loving yourself are hard to formulate a process for success, but Rebirth spells it out if you loved yourself, what would you do? Kamal has trekked to one of the highest base camps in the Himalayas, meditated with Tibetan monks in the Dalai Lama’s monastery, earned his US Army Infantry patch, walked 550 miles across Spain, lived in Paris, written several bestsellers, held the hands of dying patients, and worked with some of the best people in Silicon Valley. A few years ago he lost all his money from his company failing, had a close friend die and became severely depressed. Out of that experience came his first book “Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It” which went on to become a runaway bestseller on Amazon that currently garnishes over 2,000 4-star reviews. After reading that and changing my own mindset (Cory and I have talked about his book and the effect it had on episode 15), I reached out to him to be on the show. Over a year later we were finally able to sit down and talk about how he crafted his new book, “Rebirth” which came out January 3rd. The story follows a young man walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain and living an entire lifetime full of love, sorrow, adventure, discontent, and doubts within a month of hiking. Kamal is as genuine as they come in this episode
