As Summer Finds a Beginning

Summer is late in the city I stay in. There are discussions about it but no conclusions. Some say - enjoy the extended spring. Nobody minds, as there are high winds coming in from the south-west, and windows rattle. There is more time to get the air conditioners serviced.   But the intimations of summer have not ceased.   Much before the papers announced the hot days ahead, the mornings had started to get more humid. Joggers knew. Windows in cars started being closed and the air conditioning cranked up. Summer bushes along walking paths started flowering. Pink Bougainvillea, red frangipanis, yellow elders. Flower beds had amaranths, salvias and hollyhocks nodding away delightedly. And as I went to office, Red Road and the Victoria Memorial complex was strewn with gorgeous gulmohur and amaltas, the golden yellow shower tree, the purple jacaranda and the flaming royal poinciana. My drives every morning were ablaze with colour.   And I knew though it was a welcome, things would unravel in different ways. The tar on the roads would start to melt, as would the barely hidden anger on the edges of side streets. People would tend to get tired faster and more irritated. Fuses would ignite and punches landed. Relationships would begin to unravel and truths told in harsh tones. People would fall into lust more than they fell in love. And there would be too many misdemeanours conducted by common people in commonplace ways.   But legendarily people understand. Even as they fight and argue, they understand that the heat is a character in every situation. People make plans to go to the hills but some refuse. Summers are when they reveal themselves to their own. They write their most honest poetry. And understand the enormity of their misdemeanours- and do not hesitate to ask for forgiveness.   Springs just make you glad, happy to be alive, perky without reason. Autumns are for deep depression, to think of the worst life has every given as just desserts: it's the time for seeking redemption. Winters are to freeze inside, to not reveal oneself. Everyone is too embroiled in one's own battles of seeking succour and warmth, to be able to think of being benevolent.   But summer is when we allow everything to fall apart. Our clothes, our defences, our truths, our untruths. Even as the most iridescent flowers burst uncontrollably in colours which sometimes hurt the eyes, something soft inside wants to tell truths. It seems easier to give in then rebel, or wallow in stories with long lives. It's good to be ordinary and open.   Summers are the time for both passions and truths to find their own paths of destruction or redemption. Whilst other seasons are one dimensional, summers are when the roads get forked, ready to form - or destroy you.   If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems on the the seasons of our world and lives -  Those Days of a Lost Summer In the Winter of Our Relationships The Passing of Autumn Follow me on Instagram at @sunilgivesup. Jimmy Vivino Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson It had been six long, 4 1/2 COVID years since last I sat down with my old friend, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and long-time musical director for Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Vivino. It was like coming home. Almost the same age, we have many shared (unbeknownst to us at the time) memories of concerts at The Filmore East, Watkins Glen, the glory daze of the NY club scene, and a bounty of mutual friends. Talk about being in one's comfort zone. Jimmy talked growing up in New Jersey, his carpenter trumpet-playing father, his talented brothers, Jerry and Floyd, and how they began and evolved - he talked Conan, Laura Nyro, Phoebe Snow, Donald Fagen, John Sebastian, Al Kooper, Levon Helm, The Allman Brothers, Albert King, Tom Petty, Prince, Bruno Mars, Michael McDonald, Johnny Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, John Sebastian, The Dead, The Band, Harry Shearer, Paul Shaffer, whom he credits as his mentor, Leader of the Pack, Broadway, Ronnie Spector, Felix Cavaliere, The Rascals, Frankie Valli, Slash, Sly Stone, The J. Geils Band, Elvis Costello, and the James Brown and Friends Set Fire To The Soul with Aretha, Robert Palmer, and Joe Cocker, that he orchestrated. Incredible stories all around, and this special is available on YouTube… wow - Snuff and I just watched it. Spectacular. We talked about COVID and Jimmy joining Canned Heat, currently touring with them, and Bill Murray, as well as still doing shows with Will Lee and The Fab Faux. His first all-original album, Gonna Be 2 of Those Days, is due to drop in February, signed copies are available for pre-sale at jimmyvmusic.com He treated us to a track to close the show. Life is busy, busy. busy… just the way Jimmy likes it. And so do we who follow and adore him. I so enjoyed every second of this. Jimmy needs to write a book and get all these stories down. He knows and has played with everyone. Such fun! We talked about how vital it's been for him to keep going as both an artist and a mix engineer having recently opened his own studio in the Houston area to work on not only his own tracks but his clients as well. This has allowed him to create more flexibility in his day to day schedule and also free up enough time for him to maintain a balanced lifestyle. He touched on his 2024 singles “Summer Baby” and “One of Those Days” along with giving a preview of what to expect from him sonically in 2025. In Matthew 24:29-31 Jesus spoke of things that would happen IMMEDIATELY AFTER the tribulation of THOSE DAYS. And THOSE DAYS that Jesus spoke of were undoubtedly those that would come upon Israel in judgement (See Lk.19:41-44; 21:20-24). The signs that Jesus spoke of in Matt.24:29 probably should not be taken literally, even as they are not taken literally when used elsewhere in the Old Testament, such as in Isa.13:10; 34:4; Ezek.32:7; Joel 2:10 & Amos 8:9. Then in V.30 Jesus spoke of ‘The Sign of The Son of Man', but doesn't say what it is. But we know that there were certain SIGNS that accompanied His First Coming. However, in Mk.13:26 and Lk.21:27 there is no mention of ANY SIGN but only of The Coming of The Son of Man on the clouds with great power and glory – an image that corresponds with Daniel 7:13-14, and which Jesus no doubt was referring to in His trial, when He answered the High Priest (Matt.26:64). So there are so many views on these verses, and today we just looked at a possible alternative that perhaps some of us have never considered. To watch today's video, just click on this link! Meaningful Memorial Day to everyone out there listening.  We have much love and respect for those who have served and continue to serve our country.Welcome back UMMPod Nation! We're taking a trip down memory lane, as we remember one of the more popular Upstate bands from the 2010's era, reggae-rock/funk band, Lionz of Zion!Obviously, we've known the guys from LOZ for years, as Dr. Luvbeatz was the drummer in the band. Josh "Fozzy" Forbus (Lead vocalist) and Brian "Hootie" Jeter (Bass) drop by the studio for a live in-person interview.  There are some fun stories and name drops along the way that you'll want to be sure to listen for. As we reminisce, we felt it was appropriate (in more ways than one) to play one of LOZ's tracks entitled "Those Days".After a fun-filled interview, we keep the guys from LOZ in studio to help us with our favorite segment, 'This Day in Music'.  Another fantastic episode in the books..  Thank you UMMPod Nation, see you next week!!Support the Show.

Bill Plympton - Music Art Film - Brad Balfour

Born in Portland, Oregon to Don and Wilda Plympton, he grew up in a large family of three girls and three boys. For the six children it was often far too wet to play outside. Plympton credits Oregon's rainy climate for nurturing his drawing skills and imagination. He also was a cub scout and played little league when the weather permitted. In 1964 he graduated from Oregon City High School where he participated in the art club. He went on to Portland State University, where he edited the yearbook and was a member of the film society, creating posters for them. It was here where he picked up his obsession for film – it was for this film society that he first attempted animation, making a yearbook promo that was accidentally shot upside-down, rendering it totally useless. To avoid the Vietnam War, Plympton served in the National Guard from 1967 to 1972. In 1968, he moved to New York City and began a year of study at the School of Visual Arts. Making the Big Apple his home, Plympton served 15 years as an illustrator and cartoonist. Between toting his portfolio and catching cheap matinees, he designed the magazines: Cineaste, Filmmakers Newsletter, and Film Society Review. His illustrations have graced the pages of The New York Times, Vogue, House Beautiful, The Village Voice, Screw, and Vanity Fair. His cartoons appeared in such magazines as Viva, Penthouse, Rolling Stone, National Lampoon, and Glamour. In 1975, in The Soho Weekly News, he began “Plympton,” a political cartoon strip. By 1981, it was syndicated in over twenty papers by Universal Press Syndicate. All his life, Bill Plympton has been fascinated by animation. When he was fourteen, he sent Disney some of his cartoons and offered up his services as animator. They wrote back and told him that while his drawings showed promise, he was too young. It wasn't until 1983 that he was approached to animate a film. The Android Sister Valeria Wasilewski asked Plympton to direct and animate a film she was producing of Jules Feiffer's song, “Boomtown.” Connie D'Antuono, another of the film's producers, “sort of held my hand through the whole process,” Plympton says. “It was a great way to learn to make a film.” Immediately following the completion of “Boomtown,” he began his own animated film, “Drawing Lesson # 2.” Production of the live action scenes was slow due to inclement weather, so Plympton decided to start on another film. For this one, he contacted Maureen McElheron, an old friend with whom he had performed in a Country Western Band (he played pedal steel guitar), and she agreed to score “Your Face.” Due to budgetary considerations, she also sang. Her voice, eerily decelerated to sound more masculine, combined with a fantastically contorting visage helped garner the film a 1988 Oscar nomination for best animated short. “Suddenly people began returning my phone calls,” remembers Plympton. He became very hot in the commercial business doing spots for such clients as Trivial Pursuit, Nutrasweet, Taco Bell, AT&T, Nike, Geico, United Airlines and Mercedes-Benz. His work also started appearing with more and more frequency on MTV and in the increasingly popular touring animation festivals. After a string of highly successful short films (“One of Those Days,” “How to Kiss,” “25 Ways to Quit Smoking,” and “Plymptoons”), he began thinking about making a feature film. His shorts were winning prizes like crazy and he wanted a new challenge – and, as he puts it, “I'd wanted to make a full-length movie ever since I was a kid.” What came to be called THE TUNE was financed entirely by the animator himself. Sections of the feature were released as short films to help generate funds for production. These include “The Wiseman” and “Push Comes to Shove,” the latter of which won the 1991 Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. With money from his short film prizes and commercial work, he was able to complete THE TUNE and realize a childhood dream. The completed TUNE also made the rounds of the film festivals, garnering the prestigious Houston WorldFest Gold Jury Special Award as well as a Spirit Award nomination for Best Film Score and was distributed nationally by October Films. After personally drawing and coloring 30,000 cels for THE TUNE, Plympton moved to live-action. J. LYLE, his first live-action feature, is a wacky, surreal comedy about a sleazy lawyer who meets a magical talking dog that changes his life. “Making THE TUNE, I had a lot of ideas I realized wouldn't work with animation, but would be lots of fun with real people! I took those ideas and made J. LYLE. Besides, my hand needed a rest after drawing THE TUNE.” After a successful festival circuit, J. LYLE was released in theaters around the country. Like THE TUNE, J. LYLE was financed entirely by the animator himself. Plympton's second live-action feature, GUNS ON THE CLACKAMAS, a behind-the-scenes look at an imaginary disastrous Western, was shot in Oregon and New York. Plympton says the idea came from the 1937 movie “Saratoga”, in which star Jean Harlow died during the filming and a stand-in was used to finish. “It was supposed to be a drama,” says Plympton, “but it ended up being funny. Every time Harlow was in a scene, a box or something blocked the view.” As with J. LYLE,GUNS ON THE CLACKAMAS got a limited theatrical release. In 1996, Bill Plympton followed “Mala Noche” writer Walt Curtis around his Portland hometown to record him reading his poetry. This outrageous performance film hit the festival circuit in 1997 to stunned audiences. It is entitled WALT CURTIS, PECKERNECK POET. In 1998, Bill returned to animation with I MARRIED A STRANGE PERSON. It's a heartwarming story of a newlywed couple on their wedding night. Grant, the husband, starts experiencing strange, supernatural powers and Kerry, his wife, can't cope. Whenever Grant thinks of something, it becomes reality, yet he doesn't know where these magical powers come from. Once again Bill Plympton single-handedly drew and financed an animated feature extravaganza – only this time for adults and the politically incorrect. It was released by Lions Gate Films to good box office numbers and still plays today on cable TV. Bill's next animated feature, MUTANT ALIENS, the story of a stranded astronaut returning to Earth after 20 years in space, was completed in January 2001 and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It won the Grand Prix in Annecy 2001 and was released in theatres in 2002. It has played all over the world to huge audiences. Bill's feature film, HAIR HIGH, is a gothic '50s high-school comedy about a love-triangle that goes terribly bad, with two young, murdered teens returning to their prom to get revenge. It stars the voice talents of Sarah Silverman, David & Keith Carradine, and Dermot Mulroney, and was co-produced by Martha Plimpton. Plympton charted new territory in animation, this time by broadcasting all of his drawing for the film live on the web at www.hairhigh.com. The film was completed in January 2004, released in over 50 cinemas around the country – and was released on DVD. Bill's short film GUARD DOG has been a hit at film festivals and it brought Bill his second Oscar nomination in January 2005. Two equally successful sequels soon followed, “Guide Dog” in 2006 and “Hot Dog” in 2008. Throughout his career, Bill has always made 2 to 3 short films a year that keep bringing in a solid income from sales around the world. His feature film, IDIOTS AND ANGELS, was completed in 2008 and after a successful run on the film festival circuit, was released in U.S. theaters in 2010. The film features the music of Tom Waits, Pink Martini, Nicole Renaud and Maureen McElheron, and no dialogue. It's a much more mysterious film than his previous ones, a dark comedy about a man's battle for his soul. “Because this film has no dialogue,” Plympton says, “I wanted music to play throughout – almost like a long opera – or an extended string of music videos. The look of the film is very Eastern European – something like what Jan Svankmayer might make, or David Lynch if he made animation – very dark and surreal.” Bill waited a little while before starting his next feature, and used the time to release several successful short films, such as THE COW WHO WANTED TO BE A HAMBURGER, SUMMER BUMMER andDRUNKER THAN A SKUNK. But eventually his plans returned to feature-length animation, and he started work on CHEATIN', the story of two lovers, Jake and Ella, who encounter jealousy and insecurity after their perfect courtship. Partially inspired by the works of James M. Cain, and partially inspired by a past relationship, CHEATIN' is a tale of exaggerated passion and star-crossed lovers, exploring the dual nature of how two people immensely attracted to each other can also want to kill each other at the same time. CHEATIN‘ may also be the first animated feature partially funded on Kickstarter, with loyal Plympton fans kicking in over $100,000 needed to finish it. Plympton's movies have won him such a loyal following that the cable channel Shorts HD bought the rights to his entire library and set up a Bill Plympton channel on iTunes, something he hopes will engage a whole new generation of fans. Bill is currently working on finishing HITLER'S FOLLY, a mock-umentary about Adolf Hitler's love of animation. He's directing and drawing another film called REVENGEANCE, written by animator Jim Lujan, which is also being partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign.

Latest up from Spoken Label (Poetry / Artist Podcast) features the excellent Ashley Edge. Ashley is a non-binary, autistic poet from the heart of England. They take great pleasure in opening the rusty can full of phobic critters, shining a laser on them and beating them with a poetic hammer. Prone to tugging at your soul with their tales of childhood trauma, Ashley is also able to produce the odd happy poem. Usually about cats. They have been published in many anthologies over the years and won multiple slams. A fan of trying all poetic styles, on the stage and on the page. Due for release in February 2023, Ashley's collection, "Those Days, These Days", is a double-whammy. An exploration of their early life as a loud and proud queer, coming out and falling in love during Section 28, Ashley fast forwards to present times, being non-binary and the passions that keep them sane and fighting. When I Hear the Whistle of a Passing Train

The passing of a speeding train. It's whistle from afar. The smoke from the now-disappearing steam engines. The rapidly decreasing chug-chug as it leaves a railway station.   These sounds and images are sepia-tinted in my memory, fraying at the ends with passing time. But making me remember - what a time that was. And I drown so heavily in the past, that I wallow and I wonder - is nostalgia a benediction or a curse? Writers extol me - don't drown in that lake, or your words would forever be cursed by mush and sentimentality. My heart says - linger, a little longer, before climbing the mountain of today.   When has a poet ever listened to his head? I fallow.   I sometimes think the wonder which filled our Iives in our childhood had more stars than the skies - the innocence of growing up allowed anything and everything to fill its illimitable space. And as time passed by, the skies drowned in the depth of minutiae's ocean. Till memories surfaced like flotsam when an ancient breeze came by to ripple the water's surface. And we asked  ourselves “whither?”   Life's trajectories always seem to take us away. Away from what we love, away from what we cared, away from things which made us the persons we were, away from what we now call ‘our roots'. But by then we are far gone, foregone. We are the rubber band which has been pulled beyond shape. And we look back, stretched and irredeemable, with yearning and regret.   I now know what the writers meant - and what they missed.   Nostalgia is a country for the tired soul. Its revisitation is not a weakness, because it is primarily a resting place. It is to do with standing at one's own window, letting either the winter sun in or the falling dusk, and remember what it all meant, at a time when we were not in search of meaning at all. And how those times mean the world to us now.    If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems steeped in nostalgia - Those Days of a Lost Summer Lost Atlas of Belonging One Summer Follow me on Instagram at @sunilgivesup. Episode 36 kicked off on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 15 Sept 2022.  We are into the last 15% of Quarter 3 and then that is 2022 in its P.  Amazing, time really does fly. We kicked off the show with 'The Longest Day' by Iron Maiden.  At over seven minutes it was a nice way to give everyone a chance to settle in.  From there we went to Mötley Crüe for a bit of ‘Power To The Music', and that's what TSORR is all about.  That track features John Corabi on vocals, John has just released his biography so I will let yo know how that is once I finish it.  From there we had something from Lita Ford off her album titled Living Like a Runaway.  Then it was back to the classics with my favorite band Judas Priest and a track called 'Desert Plains'.  From Priest, we went to a band out of Arizona called Icon with a track called 'World War'.  Hopefully, that won't happen. We checked the title track off Surfing With The Alien, what a classic, the album cost $ 13 000 to make and sold a million copies.  I am sure Joe Satriani is still very happy about that.  And then an hour in everything went to shit.  We are getting load shedding in South Africa, three to four times every 24 hours and it is wreaking havoc with everything including Rebel Rock Radio and The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Forgive the rant I had, we are really struggling here.  Once comms were eventually restored,  I focused on good times music like Metal Church's 'Date With Poverty', Motor Sister with  'A Hole', Nine Inch Nails with 'The Wretched' and Megadeth's ‘Dogs of Chernobyl'.  All pretty much aimed at the government that has stolen all the money and destroyed all the infrastructure.    There is so much good music out at the moment, the New Ozzy Osbourne was released last week and we took a listen to a track called 'One of Those Days' which features Eric Clapton.  I reckon Eric has come out tops here, of all the megastar guitarists featured on the album he just gets it perfect.  Another new album I have been playing a lot of is Burning Black by NWOBHM pioneers Desolation Angels featuring Clive Pearson on bass.  Clive was in local SA metal band Lynx back in the early '80s.  With 50 minutes to go, it was time to forget about the ANC abortion and let the music take over. Steel Panther with 'Gold Digging Whore' bought some levity to the show and seeing as we were down there Buckcherry with 'Ridin'' and Sound Garden with 'Big Dumb Sex' kept the show completely NSFW.   We needed to check out some SA music and paid our respects to Dennis East who passed away this week.  Dennis and Mike Pilot gave us Stingray and the wonderful ‘Better The Devil You Know'.   From there we had  ‘Baby Murdered Me' from Springbok Nude Girls featuring one of Theo Crous's best solos ever, and there have been a few,  in my opinion.     We ended off with Parkway Drive and the title track off their new album released last week called 'Darker Still'.  Check out the second solo, it sounds great.  Artists featured:  Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Lita Ford, Judas Priest, Icon, Joe Satriani, Cirith Ungol, Humble Pie, Cream, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, The Gaslight Anthem, Last In Line, Titus Andronicus, Trivium, Motor Sister, Nine Inch Nails, Metal Church, Hell Fire, Nazareth, Hole, Kid Rock, Megadeth, Cradle of Filth, Desolation Angels, Saxon, Steel Panther, ACDC, Buckcherry, Soundgarden, Stingray. Springbok Nude Girls, The Black Cat Bones, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Parkway Drive.

"It's a moment before.   The stillness is of a zen monk, the heaviness of a misdemeanor unconfessed, the puddle is a pool with the sky in shame, the renegade vine mumbling Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité."   A storm as as much an anticipation as it is an occurrence. And as in all things which we expect, which we wait for, there is endless trepidation, an asymmetric thudding, an irrational prescience, and an almost-joyous fear. We know it will change things, we know it will break the breakable and bend the bendable - we find hiding places, corners away from the airstream, we want lesser impact, we seek status quo.   And then we open the windows, and ourselves, to the storm.   In the schemata of willful resurrection, there is no sweeter joy than to find oneself in smithereens, to know we will find ourselves broken into pieces and nothing, nothing will put us back together in the same way. And in that broken down situation lies the promise of regeneration. Whilst we force ourselves into survival mode, if we are alive to storms, we will seek its destructive power. We will know that the storm will pass, we will know that we will survive, we know it will leave us cleansed, we know it will leave us changed.   So, I open my window to storms. I open myself up, to find a new me.   If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems on storms, summers and other life-affirmations - Bringing The Storm Home A Summery Love Story (in the middle of winter) Those Days of a Lost Summer Follow me on Instagram at @sunilgivesup.
