#162: Live from the Saving Real Organic Conference at Churchtown Dairy in October 2023, and moderated by Matt Sheffer of Hudson Carbon, Zephyr Teachout and Dave Chapman field (tough) questions from audience members about the fate of the US anti-monopoly movement and its ability to impact our food system for the better.https://realorganicproject.org/symposium-2024/Zephyr Teachout is an attorney and law professor at Fordham University. She is the author of Break'em Up: Recovering Our Freedom from Big Ag, Big Tech, and Big Money and a 2018 candidate for Attorney General in New York State. Once upon a time she was a farmhand at Real Organic Project certified KillDeer Farm in Norwich, Vermont.Dave Chapman owns and operates Long Wind Farm in East Thetford, VT, which concentrates on soil-grown glasshouse tomatoes that are produced year round. Dave and ellow Vermont tomato farmer Davey Miskell noticed the suspicious appearance of  hydroponic tomatoes from other countries being sold with the USDA organic sticker several years ago. Their research led to a web of injustices affecting real organic farmers, including berry growers, dairy producers,  grain farmers and more. The Real Organic Project was founded in 2017 and has evolved into an add-on food label. It is a100% farmer-led organization.Matt Sheffer is a farmer, writer, and researcher who serves as the Executive Director of Hudson Carbon, a non profit organization studying how to accurately track and measure carbon capture in soil.To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/zephyr-teachout-dave-chapman-matt-sheffer-panel-episode-one-hundred-sixty-twoThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https:The Real Organic Project Certification deadline for 2024 is 04/15/2024. Susan Hood is the librarian and archivist at the Representative Church Body Library, situated in Churchtown in Dublin. The RCBL is the repository for the Church of Ireland (Anglican church) within the Republic of Ireland. It holds parish registers and vestry minute books for many (but not all) locations throughout the country, either in original form or on microfilm. As Susan mentions to Paul, the C of I's records often include information relating to other denominations. Susan has been familiar with genealogy and with family historians since her student days, when she gained experience doing summer work at the Genealogical Office. This led to her publication Royal Roots - Republican Inheritance (The Woodfield Press, Dublin, 2002), a history of the institution from the 1850s forward. Prior to 1943 it had been the Office of Arms. Paul broaches the thorny question of post-Covid opening hours and Susan rises admirably to the challenge. They discuss how the RCBL publication of parish registers and older vestry minutes in book form, begun under Susan's predecessor Raymond Refaussé, evolved into online publication of registers on the Church Records database on the Irishgenealogy.ie website and the RCBL's own Archive of the Month. Susan also tells us what's in the pipeline in relation to digitisation. Episode five focuses on the first two albums by Into Paradise - Under the Water (1990) and Churchtown (1991). Keith Cullen released Under the Water on Setanta Records and then the band subsequently made the jump to Ensign Records for its major label follow-up, Churchtown before returning once more to Setanta for two further albums. My conversation with Dave Long takes in: playing punk gigs in the Magnet bar with his first band Amuse; forming Backwards Into Paradise and recording various demos in Dublin; signing to Setanta Records; touring Europe with The Godfathers; signing a major record deal with Nigel Grainge's Ensign Records; working with The Sound's Adrian Borland; the writing of music journalist David Cavanagh; playing live with Into Paradise in the UK. We also chat about Moll & Zeis, Dave's latest album with his old friend Shane O'Neill and we ruminate on the creative and artistic compulsion to continue to create new music regardless of its perceived success or popularity.

“Meet Me On Another Day” From the mid-‘80s to about 1993, David Long used to front the Dublin band Into Paradise. Filled with moody rhythms, dark melodies and churning choruses, their work brought to mind that of Echo and the Bunnymen and The Sound. Sure enough, Adrian Borland of The Sound produced their second album Churchtown. Made up of David, Rachel Tighe, James Eadie and Ronan Clarke, Into Paradise were a spellbinding outfit whose songs were urgent and yearning. But they only put out two albums Under The Water and Churchtown and aside from a handful of great singles in the early 90s, that was that. In '96 Long and his childhood pal Shane O'Neil who fronted the band Blue In Heaven, teamed up for an album under the moniker Supernaut. The two friends had also been in bands together before, so working with each other was a natural thing. And then Long kind of stepped away for a bit. A bit being like 20 years or so. After a series of winning solo albums, he and O'Neil started writing and recording together in 2018 or so and that collaboration yielded loads of new material. So much so, in fact, that their new EP Far From Home is out now and their new album Moll and Zeiss is forthcoming. The new material is a nervy blend of The Go Betweens, The Triffids' Born Sandy Devotional and the Jesus and Mary Chain. It's some of the most riveting work we've heard by anyone in years. And David Long? One of the nicest dudes around. You're going to dig this chat. Just about every cheese lover dreams about becoming a professional cheesemaker — but it takes real dedication to the craft to make that dream a reality. Matt Spiegler started out as a blogger, exploring the world of artisan cheese and writing about it as he went at his site Cheese Notes. Soon, he was making his own cheeses at home — and eventually quit his day job to intern and then work at one of the country's most esteemed cheese houses, Jasper Hill Farm. Today, he's the head cheesemaker at Churchtown Dairy, a biodynamic farm in New York's Hudson Valley, only a few miles from where Matt grew up. Plus, we taste some delicious Churchtown cheeses!
