She is the author of Break'em Up: Recovering Our Freedom from Big Ag, Big Tech, and Big Money and a 2018 candidate for Attorney General in New York State. Once upon a time she was a farmhand at Real Organic Project certified KillDeer Farm in Norwich, Vermont.Dave Chapman owns and operates Long Wind Farm in East Thetford, VT, which concentrates on soil-grown glasshouse tomatoes that are produced year round. Dave and ellow Vermont tomato farmer Davey Miskell noticed the suspicious appearance of  hydroponic tomatoes from other countries being sold with the USDA organic sticker several years ago. Their research led to a web of injustices affecting real organic farmers, including berry growers, dairy producers,  grain farmers and more. The Real Organic Project was founded in 2017 and has evolved into an add-on food label. It is a100% farmer-led organization.Matt Sheffer is a farmer, writer, and researcher who serves as the Executive Director of Hudson Carbon, a non profit organization studying how to accurately track and measure carbon capture in soil.To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/zephyr-teachout-dave-chapman-matt-sheffer-panel-episode-one-hundred-sixty-twoThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https:The Real Organic Project Certification deadline for 2024 is 04/15/2024. Lessons from "Entry Planning for Equity-Focused Leaders:" with Adam Parrott-Sheffer As a principal transitioning into a new position, I searched for the literature on entry plans and discovered "Entry Planning for Equity-Focused Leaders: Empowering Schools and Communities." In this practitioner-focused and action-oriented work, Jennifer Perry Cheatham, Rodney Thomas, and Adam Parrott-Sheffer consolidate their extensive experience centering equity in leadership. They affirm that the entry of a new leader, or the pivot of an established one, affords an unparalleled opportunity to garner the insight, trust, and commitment to establish a basis for positive, equitable transformation within a system. Today I have the distinguished honor of interviewing Adam Parrott-Sheffer, one of the co-authors. He was interviewed on Wisdom & Productivity when the show had just started and I am thankful he's back for a second time.  Adam is a former nonprofit and school district senior leader.  His areas of expertise include: leadership entry, team development, board management, and program evaluation/impact.  —QUESTIONS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A PRINCIPAL Adam, how are you feeling? Please share with us the origin story of the book. Can you explain what an entry plan is and how it can help school principals achieve their goals? Why is equity such an important consideration for school principals, and how can an entry plan help them promote equity within their schools? Entry plan phases Reflect Listen and Learn Plan to Act Why is it important to develop a leadership story? Can you describe what empathy interviews look like? How to input this information and how to disaggregate this qualitative data in a way that makes sense? Can you tell us about the importance of political mapping? How can principals decide who to talk to? Are there some people one must avoid? Are the most important questions: What do you like about ______? What do you want to see better or improve? How can one engage non dominant voices? The book talks about superintendents getting a team and even hiring consultants; how can principals adapt this advice? Quote: “A leader must connect values and strategy through EMOTIONS to generate collective action.” How can principals share findings? James Baldwin quote: “not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” An example of a CORRESPONDING STRENGHTS-BASED LANGUAGE: “the highest form of school love is the belief that each student is capable of excellence and deserving of deep learning and critical feedback” How to persuade the teachers or administrators who want to put blame on things that we cannot control? What is your advice on creating report of findings  Without offending people Sensemaking process And making time for healing The three authors expressed they did everything they were supposed to do but didn't center the importance of healing, self-care, and care for others – perhaps THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SHIFT Wondering if this will delay the expected progress districts have for principals — what advice do you have importance of self care as act of resistance Cheatham mentioned that she worked 14 hour days and this took a toll in the family The advice of not emailing people at night as it can trigger negative emotions Should principals schedule email time? Adam expresses his gratefulness on the last pages for those that supported him and mentions joyful learning; can we end the show by you telling us on how we can make learning (and teaching) joyful again?

What is birth trauma, and how can we move through it?   This week we're speaking to Christie Sheffer, a Certified Professional midwife who also created the Perinatal Trauma Center. Today we are going to be discussing birth trauma, what it is, how it oftentimes presents, and how it impacts us and our loved ones. Christy has recorded this interview, and she also recorded a follow up discussion for the Home birth collective. So she's one of our guest experts inside of the Home birth Collective, where she gave practical tips on how to prevent birth trauma and then how to heal from it afterwards if it were to happen.   Episode Roundup:   The first one being that trauma is a physical response. It's not an emotional feeling. It's something that we physically experience inside of our bodies. And it's when our body thinks that an event is happening in real time, it cannot differentiate or distinguish past from present. So when we go to heal our trauma, we are simply trying to show our body that it is safe right now. What a blessing to be able to give our bodies that. If you have experienced birth trauma, whether you deem it yourself big or small, it is worth healing. It is worth digging through and finding the truth and healing it. Your trauma impacts your day to day functioning whether you recognize it or not. It also has implications on your family, on your children, on your spouse. For us to be able to work through our own healing, we also provide healing for those around us. What a wonderful example to everyone around us. Finally, if you are finding yourself feeling uncomfortable when you talk about your birth, when the idea of birth comes out, when your friend mentions her birthing plans, that's when we want to really check-in and make sure that we are getting the support that we need.   Be sure to checkout Christie's website and the amazing self-diagnostics quiz that she has so that you can see where you fall in terms of how you are processing you Birth experience.   Resources: Happy Homebirth Academy FREE Homebirth Essentials Guide Happy Homebirth Collective

We touch on numerous topics in this episode, such as finding deals through direct mail, working with other investors, and finding partners to do deals with that you actually like working with. I think a lot of listeners will find inspiration in Tory's story… he was able to find the right people to learn from, took immediate action on what he was learning from them, and the results were monumental -  his first deal was a 232 unit portfolio!
