Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's MondayApril 19th and we're here to bring you a closer look at our top stories, events and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado. Today - The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel is retiring its press and shifting print production to Montrose. Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com. Now, our feature story. The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel is retiring its press and shifting print production to Montrose under a contract between Seaton Publishing and Wick Communications. The Sentinel will be printed at the Daily Press' press plant, likely starting July 6. Sentinel Publisher Jay Seaton said that the decision came from the fact that the press is inefficient and replacement parts aren't available anymore. The press was installed back in 1984 The three-story Goss headliner press is capable of printing 40,000 copies of a 96-page newspaper per hour. And currently, the Sentinel prints about 18,000 to 20,000 papers, total. This means it's really only using a fraction of the press. The company weighed the pros and cons of purchasing a new press, but, in the end decided not to. Seaton says that Montrose has an efficient press. They've been smart about investing in their print facility. Wick Communications, the parent company of the Montrose Daily Press is investing in more equipment too. Our Publisher, Dennis Anderson noted that we're making a significant investment by adding two more color units, mechanical registration, a duplicate insertion machine and other upgrades. The change in operations means those employed in the Sentinel's printing division will lose their jobs, although Anderson says it's Wick's preference is to hire displaced workers. To Seaton - this is the hard part of this news. These are dedicated pressmen who have spent a lifetime working in this industry. For them to be losers in this situation is sad and unjust. So, what happens with the massive Goss press that'll no longer be used? Well, it would cost about as much to remove as its scrap value. Roughly $40,000. Right now, the Sentinel will leave it in place for its historical value. To read more about this story visit us at montrosepress.com - And before we go we'd like to highlight OHS's Gavin Lindsey who's been accepted to Harvard University - his number 1 university choice. The senior was awarded the Harvard Faculty Scholarship, which is merit-based, and is a near-full ride offer. The talented future OHS alum was also honored with one of Colorado's oldest honors, the Boettcher Scholarship. It's a four-year, full-tuition merit-based scholarship awarded to graduating Colorado high school students. But Lindsey rejected the Boettcher scholarship in favor of opportunities at Harvard. This was a “difficult” decision. Lindsey's been laser-focused for many years. And he's proved it through his in and out-of-school commitments. He's an FBLA officer, elected into the state District 9 officer position, he's president of Olathe's Future Farmers of America chapter, he's head boy at OHS, he's part of MOB, and he's been a contributor with local nonprofit organizations. On top of all that, Lindsey works 30-40 hour weeks in the ClickList department at City Market. During his down time, he likes to hang out with friends and “bleeds” gold and blue, making sure to find time to attend OHS sporting events. Lindsey credits dedication to communication and time management as his biggest pillars. He has three different calendar/planners that he monitors constantly, blocking out his time so it's efficient. He spends around five hours a day outside of class on his studies. Once Lindsey is able to declare for a major, he plans to double major in international relations and political science. He'll concentrate in global diplomacy and also minor in arabic studies. Those plans derive from his desire to impact people in the United States, but people in other countries, too. Lindsey hopes to study abroad for a semester, in Europe or the Middle East. His senior quote reads, “go confidently in the directions of your dream, live the life you've imagined,” a famous saying from American philosopher Henry David Thoreau. The quote coincides with Lindsey's message to current and future students at OMHS. Congratulations Gavin! That's all for today, thank you for listening! What starts with Eric discussing the state of one of his many Disney cups (from one of his many trips to the park) evolves into a conversation of recycling, environmental impacts, and what can be done to minimize the damage that we are all doing. Note that this is not a pointless debate, as the health of our planet is certainly not a pointless topic. Todd also goes on a side rant about Kroger's Clicklist situation but dials it back in light of the pandemic situation we now live in. There are references to the use of Frozen themed plates as part of Todd's bachelor's party, so brace yourselves for that. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/todd8/message
Originally released: June 08, 2009 Episode 4 features a coming out story and interview with Tom from Ramble Redhead Show. Tom has been doing his podcast for over 4 years and has completed nearly 300 episodes. You can check out all of the podcasts on his website at http://www.rambleredhead.com/ (http://www.rambleredhead.com/). You can also find his podcasts in iTunes. Tom Goss' "Back To Love" is a collection of edgy alt/pop songs that are literally about love—not always romantic love, but the many faces of love. He has built on the success of his first national tour with acclaimed singer/songwriter Eric Himan in 2008, as well as the production and release of his first video, which was featured nationally and eventually rose to #2 on MTV LOGO's The Click List. "I wanted to create something that was instantly accessible," says Goss. "Something that would touch a wide audience, and something that was fast and clean but also carried a concrete message." As a gay man, he wanted to deliver a message about societal and religious perceptions of what love means to a gay person, as well as his family's love and failed love, including the divorce of his parents. Goss also learned a lot from his recently deceased grandfather, whom he says loved his grandmother “more than I have ever seen anyone love.” He adds that “Back To Love” breathes speaks, and aches like nothing I have ever done before.” Goss, who grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin, moved to DC in 2004 to enter Catholic seminary in hopes of becoming a priest. After that didn't go as planned, Goss later found himself through his charity work and through his partner, and began to make music a full-time ambition. His debut, album, Naked Without, was released in 2006 and was followed by Rise in January 2008. Goss plans to hit the road in support of Back To Love, delivering the message of his new album to a wide range of listeners. “I want people to listen to "Back To Love" and leave with a sense of hope and love greater than before,” says Goss. “I want to start conversations about love and loss, anger and forgiveness, hope and fear, but most importantly integration, of self and of each other. And at the same time, I want to deliver the best batch of songs that I possibly could.” You can find more information on Tom's music and concert dates on his website http://www.tomgossmusic.net/ (tomgossmusic.net). On May 28 radio hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States spent more than 30 minutes making crude and dehumanizing comments promoting child abuse against transgender children. It began when they discussed a story about an Omaha family supporting their transgender child and her transition. After GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation issued a call to action, the radio station finally called back and promised Rob and Arnie would respond to their offensive segment. GLAAD also spoke with with radio host Dawn Rossi who defended transgender people on the highly problematic segment. On their follow-up show, Rob and Arnie failed to apologize for their remarks. GLAAD re-issued the Call to Action, and LGBT advocates made their voices heard through social networking and thousands of people from around the world contacted KRXQ and their advertisers. After nine advertisers pulled their ads, the radio station finally took notice and they suspended the show until Thursday June 11th. Today Dr. Cindy Blackwell and I talked about: What an occupational therapist does The fact that play is the primary occupation of the child. It's our kid's job to play. Children learn about how the world works through play. Limiting screen time is important. Especially for kids with disabilities or delays, and can cause sensory overload. It's a good idea to go on a "sensory diet," feeding our sensory systems in a healthy way. Screen time can be like a sugar rush for the brain that can cause a crash or a meltdown later. A visual schedule can be very helpful. You can't pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first, even though as a mom that might seem counterintuitive. Prioritize your activities carefully to conserve your energy. If your child has an occupational therapist, let the therapist know about your health needs so they can work with your child to problem solve and figure out ways to target your child's goals while keeping your needs in mind. Set things up when you're feeling good, so you're prepared when you don't feel so well. There are good blogs and resources by occupational therapists to help you with information. Occupational therapists can help with many different aspects of daily living. If you just can't get out to one, Telehealth is a new way to speak with a therapist from your computer. Who is Dr. Cindy Blackwell? Dr. Cindy Blackwell is a pediatric occupational therapist specializing in pediatric mental health, sensory processing issues, and self regulation and behavior management. Cindy has experience working with children and their families in both public and therapeutic schools, in home-based and outpatient services, as well as in academia. Cindy's doctoral research focused on supporting parent advocacy in special education. In 2014, Cindy was chosen as an Emerging Leader with the American Occupational Therapy Association; through this program, she published research on preparing OT students to address mental health in school practice and across settings. Cindy is a Nashvillian by way of Chicago and has worked at Pediatric Therapies in Franklin, TN for the past 2 years. Her favorite thing about her job is that she can play games and talk about feelings all day while helping children learn and develop to their highest potential. Things to do with your children to continue their therapy at home: PLAY! Show them you're interested in their ideas for playing, and they might be more motivated. Play a board game together (there are many that also have therapeutic value, Dr. Blackwell's list is below) If you're tired - look for ways to direct their play such as "Minute to Win It." Play a memory game using multi-step directions. Have them put on a show for you. The key is to show them that you care. They just want to know that and that you're into what they're into. You can have more energy for your kids by using conservation techniques such as: Breaking tasks into chunks, Taking breaks in the middle of things, Do the most demanding tasks when you're feeling your best, Have your kids help you ease the burden (make a game or reward system to motivate them, Use technology like ClickList for grocery shopping and online ordering. Avoiding overcommitment Use your network. Reach out to family and friends when you need help around the house or with babysitting. Ways we can help our kids not worry about us and our health: They can handle things when we teach them how to cope. They want to know they "Why" behind things. You don't have to go over all the small details, but Let them know what's going on. It's going to seem worse in their head if you don't explain things. healthychidren.org explains what kids can process at what age. Kids with disabilities process at different ages than other kids their age. Develop healthy ways to cope with stress and anxiety and teach our kids to do the same. Help our kids self-regulate by teaching them to name and understand their feelings. This starts by modeling. Reassure and validate their feelings. Do your best to keep things consistent. Live in the present. Don't dwell on the "what ifs" or the past. Don't compare yourself to your old self or to others. Alternatives to screen time (TV, tablets, phones, etc) Teach them leisure skills Create a choice board or "menu" of activities. Let them choose what they do so they can be in charge of what they do. Create a visual schedule so they know when they can make these choices. Cindy's advice: Take care of yourself first. If you can take care of your mental health and well being, it's going to better equip you to do that for your kids. Cindy's superpower: Empathy. You can contact Dr. Blackwell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cindy-blackwell-ot/ Want to connect? Find out what happens when Joy places her very first Click List order, Can Joy recreate a sound effect well enough for this game and someone stole Mimi's money, but who?
Today we (Lissi and Joy) discuss different times in our lives when we have had to take the reigns and parent solo-style. We’ve been through long periods of husbands in graduate programs and work travel that have left us feeling isolated but also resourceful as we’ve found ways to make it bearable and also easier on ourselves. We give major respect to single moms and military moms who do the solo parenting thing all day every day! Lissi talks about reaching out to other moms to help each other during the long years of dental school, taking advantage of things like Click List, and most importantly: Treat Yo Self! Joy reveals the long periods of travel her husband had to do during some of the busiest baby years of their marriage, how she survived with the help of others, how important it is to say YES to things you want to do (pay the sitter!) and how to balance life when one person is continually coming and going. Takeaway questions include: What tips would you give other moms who are gearing up for a long period of solo-parenting? What have you done to keep from becoming resentful of your partner’s travel? Do you have any tips for dealing with fear or anxiety when you’re alone at night? Do you check every inch of your house like a crazy person ala Joy? Please share with us and all our other listeners as we figure this thing out together! Join in the conversation on instagram @regularcoolmom and comment there. Or join the Facebook Group: Regular Cool Mom and chime in. We have so many questions and hope that you have the answers! Thanks for listening!

Tina Mabry an American film writer and director from Tupelo, Mississippi. Following the release of her first feature film Mississippi Damned (2009), she was named one of '25 New Faces of Indie Film' by Filmmaker Magazine and among the 'Top Forty Under 40' by Advocate Magazine. Mabry was named a James Baldwin Fellow in Media by United States Artists. A native of Tupelo, Mississippi, Tina Mabry graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts with an MFA in Film Production in 2005. While participating in Film Independent’s (FIND) Project: Involve, Tina finished developing and writing her short film, BROOKLYN’S BRIDGE TO JORDAN, which she went on to direct. The film screened at more than fifty film festivals worldwide and won multiple Jury and Audience Awards as well as an award for Best Director. BROOKLYN’S BRIDGE TO JORDAN aired on Showtime Networks, BET J (now Centric), and was voted the #1 film on the season finale of LOGO’s The Click List 2: Best in Short Film. Shortly after graduating from USC, Tina co-wrote the feature screenplay ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE, which was directed by Jamie Babbit (BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER). The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival (2007) and won Best Feature Narrative at the South by Southwest Film & Music Festival (2007). In 2008, Tina participated in the FIND’s Directors Lab with her feature film, MISSISSIPPI DAMNED; the film was later awarded the Kodak Film Grant. While playing on the festival circuit, MISSISSIPPI DAMNED garnered an impressive thirteen awards from participation in fifteen film festivals including awards for Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the Chicago International Film Festival (2009). The film premiered on Showtime Networks in February 2011. Tina was named among the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in Filmmaker Magazine in July of 2009 and was recognized by Out Magazine as one of the most inspirational and outstanding people of 2009. She was featured in the Advocate magazine as part of their “Top Forty Under 40” issue, which features the top 40 individuals who are raising the bar in their respective fields. With over 300 nominated artists and only 50 selected artists, Tina was named the James Baldwin Fellow in Media by United States Artists, a national grant-making, and artist advocacy organization, in December of 2010. Tina’s latest feature, COUNTY LINE, was accepted into FIND’s 2010 Screenwriters Lab. In April 2011, the script participated in Tribeca All Access where it won the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award. COUNTY LINE also took part in FIND’s Fast Track, a film financing market, which was held during the Los Angeles Film Festival 2011.
