Angie Balderas has always been brilliant. Raised by Mexican American parents, she tested out of high school at 16, opting to take courses at a Jr. College instead. With a newfound sense of freedom and a more flexible schedule, Angie knocked on the door of a local Spanish-language radio station looking for a job. She was a shoo-in. That very day, she began what would grow into a remarkable career in radio, communications, and engaging the Latino community.Since that time, Angie's work has been something to celebrate. In 2018, she was named one of Radio Inc.'s most influential women in radio, a title she proudly held as she appeared on the magazine's cover in June of that year. Angie would go on to be recognized by the publication again in 2021. As Angie and Amalia discuss this accomplishment, they touch on how proud Angie's family is of her, their unwavering support, and how no one reaches success without a little help and care from others. And Angie knows a thing or two about success! Today, she is the Senior Vice President of Entravision Communications, a digital agency focused on reaching both Hispanic and mainstream customers. She also serves on the Executive Board for Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio, an organization working to support women seeking management and leadership positions in radio.

Although I celebrate women all year long on this podcast, I'm always up for celebrating Women's History Month and International Women's Day. This week also marks the one-year anniversary of this podcast. I'll revisit some of the inspiring conversations I've had over the last year; call it a best-of if you will. But, I also have some personal news to share. You know, when I launched this podcast just ahead of International Women's Day a year ago, my aunt asked me, "hon…when do we get to hear your story?" I laughed and tucked that comment into the back of my head and tried not to think about it all year. The truth is, while I've been interviewing women about their challenges and triumphs in the media, I've been having a really difficult time myself. Maybe launching this podcast was a means to better understand what I've been going through. But, if you've noticed, you haven't heard too much about my story yet, and why? Fear.Fear seems to be a constant theme on this podcast and it's popped up in almost every conversation. It's different for everyone. Fear of losing one's job. Fear of judgement. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of being too demanding. Fear of asking too much. Fear of saying the wrong thing. Fear of being too confident, too bold, too much…What stops you from making tough decisions? For me, it was the fear of ruining my career; the fear of not getting another great job. The fear of repercussions. But, I did it.I just became a stat in the great resignation and left my job. A job that I absolutely loved. I handed in a resignation letter without even lining up a new full-time job. One of my greatest fears came true in the process: I didn't get to say goodbye. I didn't get a chance to say thank you to my colleagues or partners or the emerging musicians-turned-friends that have been the soundtrack to my last five years.Forbes recently did a piece on the Great Resignation and shared some findings from an American survey that asks what the main causes are. The top three causes were low salary, limited career opportunities, and not feeling valued by management...interesting. Let's unpack one more factor. I think this pandemic has forced many of us to look inwards, asking ourselves who we are, what we care about, and who we want to be next. A job doesn't define you and that's a lesson that I've needed to learn for a long time, but better late than never.I made the decision to resign in the name of self-love and that concept is pretty new for me. The challenges were outweighing the joy I once felt at work. That may be shocking to some, but as thrilling as these last five years have been at a really exciting company, it became difficult to separate me from SiriusXM. I also came to an important realization that helped me face my fear; my accomplishments will follow me. Just because you resign, it doesn't erase what you've poured your heart and soul into for five years. It doesn't end friendships that will continue for years to come. I'm grateful for the entire journey, though, and really excited for the future.I have some thanks to give as I end this chapter, and I wasn't given much else of a choice but to do this here. I want to thank SiriusXM and my colleagues for the last five years. I've learned so much about our business and the industry, but also about myself and what I'm capable of. As you know, this podcast is about building community, and celebrating women. Today, I just so happen to be celebrating a personal decision, a new chapter, and five years of accomplishments alongside the amazing guests that were part of year one of the Women in Media podcast.

She's also 20 weeks pregnant. She does social marketing for Facebook and women-owned small businesses. Karen shares that she studied screenwriting. This experience started her passion for marketing and commercials. For Karen, marketing is about making great content and narratives. Listen to the full episode for Karen's recounting of her marketing journey. The Hoops Talk Podcast Karen shares that she has a love for basketball growing up. She also tried different sports like volleyball and wrestling. Karen, Liz, and Kyndall all worked for Yahoo Sports. Their conversations eventually led to them starting a podcast. They aimed to bring more awareness about women in sports. Bringing awareness to the WNBA is one of the podcast's features. Karen also shares how they grew and improved the podcast in the full episode. Expanding Your Reach and Voice The pandemic may have negatively impacted our lives, but Karen shares the magic of being able to reach out and interview anyone because of the Internet. There is an opportunity to build and cultivate communities even when we're far apart. Nurture relationships and captivate audiences in virtual spaces. The Effect of COVID-19 on Sports COVID-19 resulted in the 2020 NBA Bubble. Amid COVID-19, players were able to form relationships with players outside their team. Mental health became a focus in the bubble. A player's mental state affected their performance. Working with a Network The Hoops Talk Podcast works with The Good News Radio Network. The network scouted them because they were looking for women running a sports podcast. Karen, Liz, and Kyndall were able to make great connections through the network. Being part of a network makes cross-promotion and helping each other easier. How to Nurture Your Creativity Karen says that you can find creativity in everyday routines. She enjoys playing with her daughter, cooking, and doing arts and crafts. Many creatives may find breaks and lulls in creativity because they're busy. You can instead weave it into what you do. Creative activities can have dual purposes. For instance, you can express your creativity when you cook and feed people as well. Have Grace and Prioritize It's normal to have a long list of things you want to do, but you need to learn how to prioritize. Karen's daily non-negotiable is having grace every day. Have the grace to accept what you've finished and be grateful for where you are. Accept that you can't do everything, and that's okay. Advice on What to Do When You're Struggling When you're struggling, imagine yourself 5 or 10 years into the future, looking back to this moment. This helps you to learn, heal, and be grateful for the moment. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “I think mental health took a stage in addition to social justice both in the NBA bubble and the WNBA bubble. Because what we were seeing is how your mental state can affect your performance.” “The opportunity and the connections we made last year... both from tapping into what's going out there, tapping into the community, and then just kind of breathing this reassurance that we're doing the right thing.” “I find my creativity comes just from living life.” “So I think just having grace and then being grateful about what I did do today and what my life is like now, especially in comparison to what was in the past, I think that's a great daily non-negotiable, especially with what we're all juggling with.” “If you're suffering now, look forward... Transport yourself almost to that future, and be able to look back at what happened and be sort of, heal from it, learn from it, and be grateful about where you're at.” About Karen Karen Uyenco has over 15 years of social media and creative digital content strategy experience. Her strengths include digital marketing, social analytics, design, and writing. For Karen, good work takes time and should not be rushed.
