The Green Hornet (1936-1952) One of the most thrilling and popular superhero radio dramas, The Green Hornet followed the daring exploits of Britt Reid, owner and publisher of The Daily Sentinel newspaper. By day, Reid was an upstanding citizen in the city. But by night, he took on the secret identity of The Green Hornet, a vigilante who fought the criminal underworld alongside his multi-talented valet Kato. Together, they battled a revolving lineup of mobsters, gangsters, and villains plaguing the city streets. With Kato's martial arts skills and The Green Hornet's array of gas guns and other technology, they left behind only their calling card - a green hornet image burned into something at the crime scene. Their battles for justice were aided by The Green Hornet's ultra-cool vehicle, The Black Beauty, a sleek car outfitted with rockets and other gadgets. While the police worked tirelessly but struggled, The Green Hornet and Kato dished out their own unique brand of punishment to the city's worst criminals, all while trying to protect their secret identities. The Green Hornet's lines like "Another night's work disintegrated!" made him an icon of the airwaves. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

Whether you like him or hate him, Joe Biden is the President of the United States and Donald Trump is not. If this is the first time hearing this, you may want to sit down and brace yourself for how Trump lost the 2020 election. We talk this week with a man who has spent considerable time with the former President, and probably knows why Donald Trump didn't get a second term. In his recent book, "Frankly, We Did Win This Election" Michael Bender, reporter for the Wall Street Journal chronicles the last year of Trump's presidency and highlights some of the significant moments that convinced the country to make a different choice for who they want as President. With carefully sourced interviews and conversations with Trump himself, Michael provides the reader of his book with an inside look at the chaos, confusion, and even compassion, that existed in the White House during Trump's tenure. This is a phenomenal read, that we highly recommend you buy. Trust me on this!Guest Bio:MICHAEL C. BENDER is the senior White House reporter for the Wall Street Journal whose coverage of President Trump has been recognized for its deep sourcing, balance, and valuable behind-the-scenes portraits of Trump's administration and presidential campaigns. Bender was awarded the Gerald R. Ford Foundation Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency in 2019 for work that “set a consistently high standard of reporting” and “provided a valuable chronicle of the president, his team, and the movement that has reshaped American politics and national policy.” In 2020, he received the National Press Club award for political analysis for a series of stories that detailed the sights, sounds, and inner workings of Trump campaign rallies. Since 2000, Bender has covered local, state, and national politics for the Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction, Colorado, Dayton Daily News, Palm Beach Post, Tampa Bay Times, and Bloomberg News. He joined the Journal in 2016 and published more than eleven hundred stories about Trump in the next five years. He has also served as an on-air political analyst for CNN. Born and raised in Cleveland with his six younger sisters, Bender graduated from the Ohio State University in 2000 with a degree in history and now lives in Washington with his wife, Washington Post White House bureau chief Ashley Parker, and their two daughters.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/faithpolitics)

Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's MondayApril 19th and we're here to bring you a closer look at our top stories, events and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado.    Today - The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel is retiring its press and shifting print production to Montrose.    Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com.   Now, our feature story.   The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel is retiring its press and shifting print production to Montrose under a contract between Seaton Publishing and Wick Communications.    The Sentinel will be printed at the Daily Press' press plant, likely starting July 6.   Sentinel Publisher Jay Seaton said that the decision came from the fact that the press is inefficient and replacement parts aren't available anymore. The press was installed back in 1984   The three-story Goss headliner press is capable of printing 40,000 copies of a 96-page newspaper per hour. And currently, the Sentinel prints about 18,000 to 20,000 papers, total. This means it's really only using a fraction of the press.   The company weighed the pros and cons of purchasing a new press, but, in the end decided not to.   Seaton says that Montrose has an efficient press. They've been smart about investing in their print facility.    Wick Communications, the parent company of the Montrose Daily Press is investing in more equipment too. Our Publisher, Dennis Anderson noted that we're making a significant investment by adding two more color units, mechanical registration, a duplicate insertion machine and other upgrades.   The change in operations means those employed in the Sentinel's printing division will lose their jobs, although Anderson says it's Wick's preference is to hire displaced workers.    To Seaton - this is the hard part of this news. These are dedicated pressmen who have spent a lifetime working in this industry. For them to be losers in this situation is sad and unjust.   So, what happens with the massive Goss press that'll no longer be used?   Well, it would cost about as much to remove as its scrap value. Roughly $40,000.    Right now, the Sentinel will leave it in place for its historical value.    To read more about this story visit us at montrosepress.com   -   And before we go we'd like to highlight  OHS's Gavin Lindsey who's been accepted to Harvard University - his number 1 university choice.   The senior was awarded the Harvard Faculty Scholarship, which is merit-based, and is a near-full ride offer.   The talented future OHS alum was also honored with one of Colorado's oldest honors, the Boettcher Scholarship. It's a four-year, full-tuition merit-based scholarship awarded to graduating Colorado high school students.    But Lindsey rejected the Boettcher scholarship in favor of opportunities at Harvard. This was a “difficult” decision.    Lindsey's been laser-focused for many years. And he's proved it through his in and out-of-school commitments. He's an FBLA officer, elected into the state District 9 officer position, he's president of Olathe's Future Farmers of America chapter, he's head boy at OHS, he's part of MOB, and  he's been a contributor with local nonprofit organizations.   On top of all that, Lindsey works 30-40 hour weeks in the ClickList department at City Market.    During his down time, he likes to hang out with friends and “bleeds” gold and blue, making sure to find time to attend OHS sporting events.   Lindsey credits dedication to communication and time management as his biggest pillars. He has three different calendar/planners that he monitors constantly, blocking out his time so it's efficient. He spends around five hours a day outside of class on his studies.   Once Lindsey is able to declare for a major, he plans to double major in international relations and political science. He'll concentrate in global diplomacy and also minor in arabic studies.   Those plans derive from his desire to impact people in the United States, but people in other countries, too.   Lindsey hopes to study abroad for a semester, in Europe or the Middle East.    His senior quote reads, “go confidently in the directions of your dream, live the life you've imagined,” a famous saying from American philosopher Henry David Thoreau.   The quote coincides with Lindsey's message to current and future students at OMHS.   Congratulations Gavin!   That's all for today, thank you for listening! Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Thursday January 7th, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Today - Peter Marshall was killed in an avalanche near Red Mountain Pass in 2019. His family says the school, the guide, and Backcountry Access violated a raft of laws that led to his death.  But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we’re going back to January 1899 when, desperate for a new source of income after the collapse of silver mining, Colorado entrepreneurs gave the sweet beets a try. Investors filed to incorporate the Colorado Sugar Manufacturing Company and imported nearly 40 tons of beet seed from Germany. Now, our feature story. The family of a Longmont man killed in an avalanche safety class is now suing the guide and the local rescue group among other parties. The lawsuit is based on research, interviews and reports gathered by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.  Marshall’s death was the first avalanche fatality of the 2018-19 season. The first ever of a student at the Silverton Avalanche School which is one of the nation’s oldest avalanche education schools.  Colorado Sun reporter Jason Blevins  is joining us today to talk more about the lawsuit. Jason thank you so much for your time, can you start off with an overview of this lawsuit and who is involved? As Jason mentioned, the lawsuit focuses on the mistakes highlighted in the avalanche report, breaking down every step taken leading up to the avalanche. The lawsuit cites several dozen failures including charges of negligence, like failing to communicate the day’s avalanche forecast, and allowing instructors to lead students “into, through and below” avalanche terrain. Jim Moss, a recreation law attorney who has spent more than 30 years working with outdoor recreation companies and clients, suspects that Marshall signed waivers releasing Silverton Avalanche School from liability in case of an accident.  Moss sees the case, if it goes to trial, hinging on the testimony of expert witnesses.  Thanks for listening. Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Four members of Colorado’s congressional delegation were in the U.S. House chambers during Wednesday's deadly riot at the Capitol. All four escaped unharmed. They described their harrowing ordeal to The Colorado Sun's Jesse Paul. You can read more at coloradosun.com. Some Colorado counties are struggling to roll out vaccination programs. But Summit County is receiving praise for its approach to distribution. Officials say the county’s drive-thru method for distributing the vaccine has received attention across the state and nationally. Mesa County's clerk has posted claims of voter fraud without providing evidence and despite assurances from election officials nationwide that the November election was safe and secure. The Daily Sentinel reports that Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters tweeted on Sunday that ballots could be counted more than once and that software used in voting machines could be manipulated. For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. And don’t forget to tune in again tomorrow for a special holiday episode. Now, a quick message from our editor. The Daily Sentinel is going to take a firm stance against the Brannigan Bill, which is for the legalising of betting on horses. But money talks and the bookies have got together to lobby against it. This is a clever move, as Brit Reid of the Daily Sentinel can’t be seen to be on the side of the bookies yet he can’t be seen to be for the bill. If the state allows gambling on horses how can they stop it on other things? Britt Reid's war against crime was an extension of his family history. The Green Hornet fought crime with his high-powered car, the Black Beauty. Kato would drive the Black Beauty, keep watch out for the police or the bad guys and sometimes lend a helping fist to the fighting. The Green Hornet pretended to be a villain while really battling the forces of crime in the big city. This would make for some interesting plot twists as the Green Hornet would be actively avoiding detection by the police while at the same time attempting to destroy criminal activity in the city. Many times the Green Hornet would lead the police to believe that the Green Hornet had been the mastermind of the case at hand. The police would receive an anonymous tip of where they could pick up the now subdued crooks with the Green Hornet just barely making his escape from the scene. Al Hodge played the part of the Green Hornet from 1936 through January of 1943. The program was created by George W. Trendle, the same man associated with the creation of the Lone Ranger radio show. The Green Hornet was that of a modern day Lone Ranger. The main character was Britt Reid, a newspaper publisher of the Daily Sentinel by day and the Green Hornet by night. Britt Reid was supposed to be the great-nephew of the Lone Ranger. Britt Reid's war against crime was an extension of his family history. The Green Hornet fought crime with his high-powered car, the Black Beauty. He also utilized a gun that fired knockout gas instead of bullets. His fists also came in handy on a regular basis. He was assisted by his Filipino valet, Kato.
