Welcome back everyone! Today on the show we have Corey Phelps. I stumbled across Corey's Instagram a few months ago and instantly knew I wanted to have him on the podcast. Corey is a “bad bitch” (as he would say), but also a leader in body positivity, owning his queerness, and an advocate for mental health and homelessness. You may have watched him on the hit TLC show Too Large or seen him on YouTube sharing his weight loss journey. Corey's story is a beautiful example on how to be a Beast. You'll hear all about · When he first started his weight loss journey and was at 664 pounds, to how he's now lost over 350 pounds. · His relationship with food and the bullying he went through at school. · How he let go of what people thought about him and how he was able to do defend himself. · Coming out as gay and feeling support from most of his family, but not his mother. · His mom being diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder, and the abuse he endured.· His own diagnosis of Bipolar disorder. · How he became homeless and the journey of getting out of it. · Signing up for Too Large after a family member sent him the information. · His time on the show and how he didn't allow the show to make him look weak. · How getting surgery was just a tool to help in his weight loss journey but it's mainly how you keep up with the new goals you've created. · How he changed his relationship with food and how eats healthy and is no longer afraid to work out in front of others. There's honestly so much more we talked about and I can't wait for you to hear. I'm honored that Corey came onto the podcast and shared his story. I can't wait to see what else life has in store for him. Want to keep up with Corey? Follow him on Instagram and subscribe to his YouTube. Be sure to rate & review the show on Apple Podcasts! In This Episode You Will Learn About: How Corey's business changed during COVID Struggling with imposter syndrome Learning to play the long game The importance of tapping into your network Getting people enrolled in your vision Growing while maintaining your authenticity Resources: amplifyhercollective.com Instagram: @coreyphelps_ Text “PODCAST” to 310-496-8363 to get your questions answered on our Q&A segment or get coached on the show! Show Notes: Corey Phelps is the founder of Cultivate by Corey, a fitness-focused brand offering in-person classes and online courses. When COVID struck, she had to pivot fast and recenter herself, which led to her opening a new brand in her company: the Amplify Her Collective. In this coaching call, we explore the importance of finding mentors, how to build teams that invest in your vision, and extending your reach without sacrificing your core values. Question for Lori: You have had so many accomplishments, from The Bliss Project to your latest endeavor of Lite Pink, which is such an inspiration from the community building aspect and how you have built it from the ground up as a female-funded business. How important was it for you to tap into your network as well as find mentors at each new level to support you, push you, and guide you? What advice can you give on how to step into the CEO leadership role and build a team that is as invested in your vision and mission as you are? I have defined my big ‘why,' my mission, my core values, and have a proven process. How do I create growth, impact, and reach as many women as possible while maintaining authenticity, integrity, and personal touch as every woman's success is important to me? Guest Bio: After 11 years of teaching and coaching women on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle inside the Cultivate by Corey brand, from in-person classes at her studio to online courses and programs, there was something else brewing for Corey. In 2020, when the world shifted in unthinkable ways, so did Corey's business and priorities. She felt a tap on the shoulder and stepped into the online space in a new way, supporting women in building and growing their businesses. What started as impromptu calls and presentations to a group of women needing support in learning the ins and outs of online business has transformed into a larger mission to support women in creating an unwavering belief in themselves, their capacity to build financial freedom, and having a personal life of their dreams (friends, kids romance all of it).

#170: Burnout to Breakthrough with Corey Phelps Today we are speaking with Women's Health & Wellness Expert and Business Mentor, Corey Phelps. Corey is a lifelong athlete with a passion for health and fitness. I launched my business after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism following the birth of her daughter. Corey was in a career that made her miserable and was unwilling to accept low energy, and mysterious; sudden weight gain is an inevitable part of aging. She researched and educated herself on methods and techniques for healing and physical vibrancy. Her mission is to help others demystify nutrition and exercise so they can discover their inner power and show up as more impactful leaders. In this episode, we discuss: Learning the importance of self-care and how important it is to prioritize ourselves first and fill our own cup! How easy it is to hit burnout when you are trying to achieve and accomplish your life goals. The burnout cycle is something we continually keep learning how to listen to ourselves and what we need to prevent burnout. The importance of boundaries and how having boundaries doesn’t mean that we can’t encourage and support others to succeed. We can all succeed together. Perfectionism only holds us back from showing up in the way that we are meant to show up to create the impact we can in the world. All things sleep, health, guilt, the superwoman complex, prioritizing ourselves first, and the fact that nothing is really ever as it seems that it is. What’s the most useful skill you can have in your utility belt these days? For many people - including McGill Desautels Faculty of Management Strategy Prof Corey Phelps - that superpower is problem-solving. As we have pivoted from a manufacturing-based economy to a services and knowledge-based one, our work “product” has shifted from the physical to the increasingly intangible - from making widgets to “building” presentations and spreadsheets. At the core of these new activities, however, is the attempt - and hopefully, ability - to solve a thorny problem that’s plaguing our company or client. In a special episode of “Boiling the Ocean”, we sit down with Professor Phelps to discuss his new book, “Cracked it!: How to solve big problems and sell solutions like top strategy consultants”. In a wide-ranging chat, we discuss: • The differences between problem-solving and making sound decisions (hint: it’s more subtle than it seems) • His 4 S Framework (of course there is a framework! We’re consultants after all …) • The one problem-solving step you probably aren’t consistently thinking about • The two reasons why this is a critical skill set for everyone - not just strategy consultants or those who aspire to be one • How you can apply this thinking to your everyday problems • … and who authored the better aphorism on the power of preparation - Albert Einstein or Abraham Lincoln? Dive into this episode to learn how to quickly build up one of the critical skills of the 21st century - and join the conversation about whether or not we all have to become professional problem solvers …

Problems and decisions. Those are two things which chew up the majority of a leader's time. Essentially as leaders our raison d'etre is to solve problems and make decisions; however, sometimes we just do not have the experience necessary to ensure that we have made the right decision for the situation. That's why sometimes a guide is beneficial and the reason for this episode's guest. Corey is an accomplished speaker, corporate trainer, professor and university administrator. Additionally, he is the Associate Dean of Executive Education and Professor of Strategy at McGill U. and an affiliate at Verisei International. Corey Phelps, a strategy professor at McGill University, says great problem solvers are hard to find. Even seasoned professionals at the highest levels of organizations regularly fail to identify the real problem and instead jump to exploring solutions. Phelps identifies the common traps and outlines a research-proven method to solve problems effectively. He's the coauthor of the book, "Cracked it! How to solve big problems and sell solutions like top strategy consultants."
A lifelong athlete with a passion for health and fitness, Corey Phelps launched her business after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism after the birth of her first child. Unwilling to accept low energy and a mysterious, sudden weight gain as an inevitable part of aging, she researched and educated herself on methods, techniques, and remedies for healing and physical vibrancy. In this episode we discuss Corey's background, setbacks as women, women who are afraid to lift and how we can do more with less - simplifying to amplify results.
