Mike Flanagan is one of the defining horror storytellers of the last decade. He's a trusted custodian of tales by some of the greatest horror authors of all time, with Stephen King, Shirley Jackson and Edgar Allan Poe just some of the names he's adapted into acclaimed shows and movies. His credits as a writer, director and showrunner include The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep. No work is more personal to the filmmaker, however, than 2021's astonishing vampire drama Midnight Mass. In the conversation you're about to hear, Mike delves into his show's creation, going back in time over a decade to a version of Midnight Mass he intended to write as a novel. The story of its evolution into one of the most moving meditations on religion in memory (not to mention one of Netflix's most acclaimed ever series) is the story of a series of huge life changes for the 44-year-old, as his relationship to alcohol, faith, family and other facets of his life began to alter. The show starred Zach Gilford as Riley, a recovering addict returning to his small isolated hometown of Crockett Island after serving four years in prison for killing someone in a drunk-driving incident. There he reunites with an old flame, named Erin Greene, played by Kate Siegel, Mike's partner and frequent collaborator. Erin is pregnant, but that pregnancy takes an unexpected turn following the arrival of an enigmatic young priest on the island, who unleashes upon members of the local church-going community a series of seemingly impossible miracles. What follows is an unholy, blood-soaked baptism, as the line between what's miraculous and what's monstrous becomes dangerously blurred.Discover why Mike's love for Midnight Mass is so great, he still has the angel-slash-vampire's prosthetic wings in his garage. Find out all about abandoned plans for a second season of the show, in which Riley was to be revived as the show's antagonist. And learn why there's a musicality to monologues that makes them a joy to write (with some tips on how to write your own).Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. As 2022 began, we made our way through a sequence of the best films from 2021. Along that way, we also spent many conversations with the fictional inhabitants of Crockett Island and Mike Flanagan's mini-series, MIDNIGHT MASS. The show sits at our unique intersection of discussion better than nearly anything we've previously covered, and yielded some of the most vulnerable and thoughtful discussions about religion, horror, and hope. Here, collected all together, is the complete collection of those conversations, not only including our previously released Patron segments about Midnight Mass, but also interspersed with the Clergy Roundtable epilogue which closed the series. May these conversations encourage you to ask better questions, to challenge your conclusions, and most earnestly, to do your best.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On the evening of Good Friday Mass, Father Paul delivers a sermon rife with militaristic rhetoric, urging the congregation to prepare for war as soldiers in God's army. The homily upsets Mildred Gunning, whose physical and mental state has rapidly improved following Father Paul's visits. Later that night, Riley appears on Erin's doorstep and asks her to go offshore on a boat with him. Erin, while suspicious, agrees. Rowing far away from the island, Riley reveals what happened to him to Erin. After being attacked by the Angel, Riley rapidly recovered under the care of Father Paul, who revealed his true identity to him and told him that he believes the Angel's blood is a gift from God and has been mixing it into the Blood of Christ to heal the residents of Crockett Island. Riley left the rec center, disgusted, and deposited farewell letters for his family and Pruitt before visiting Erin. Riley tells Erin he brought her on the boat to isolate himself and declares his love for her. Riley combusts and quickly burns to ashes as the sun rises and Erin screams in horror . Leeza visits Joe and tells him of the hatred she has harbored towards him for causing her life-ruinous injury, only to forgive him eventually. A moved Joe decides to attend an AA session with Riley and Father Paul. Sheriff Hassan, whose Muslim faith puts him at odds with the town's Christian population, learns that his son Ali is studying the Bible. Later, he makes an unsuccessful attempt to get Bev to stop handing out Bibles to public school children at a town meeting. Father Paul collapses before Bev and the Scarboroughs and dies after coughing up blood, only to suddenly spring back to life. In a flashback taking place the night before his first sermon on the island, Paul sits in a confession booth. He reveals the true story of Monsignor Pruitt: near Jerusalem, Pruitt was caught in a sandstorm and discovered an ancient ruin, where he was attacked by a winged, blood-sucking humanoid creature that then fed him its lifeblood. Paul/Pruitt confesses that he believes the creature that attacked him is an Angel and its blood's healing properties constitute a divine gift that he intends to share. Ecco a voi "Midnight Mass".
Lou, Karen and Jesse leave Babylon 5 for a visit to Crockett Island in a 4 part discussion of the 2021 Mike Flanagan miniseries Midnight Mass. They discuss the first two episodes of the series, their background with supernatural/horror film/TV projects and get to know the residents of this small island.
Lou, Jesse & Karen continue their visit in Crockett Island, where they are preparing for the Easter Vigil. We talk about what makes someone a hero and what makes someone a villian. We also talk about the way that music has been used in the miniseries.
Easter Vigil is upon Crockett Island, many plans are about to unfold, and, as Juliet and Theresa like to say, chaos ensues. Join them for a discussion of the penultimate episode of Midnight Mass which includes exploding blood, the evolution of Riley's parents as characters, and the return of everyone's favorite angel.Content Warnings: mental illness and suicidal ideation, alcoholism and addiction, pregnancy loss and miscarriageTheme music: "Book of Shadows" by Houseghost (Rad Girlfriend Records) Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Since I was raised Catholic, but not Catholic enough to know wtf the book of Genesis was about, here is what Google told me “The Book of Genesis opens the Hebrew Bible with the story of creation. God, a spirit hovering over an empty, watery void, creates the world by speaking into the darkness and calling into being light, sky, land, vegetation, and living creatures over the course of six days.” Perfect f*cking name for the 1st episode of Midnight Mass and for the introduction of the beautiful and luxurious Crockett Island aka the Crockpot. Welcome to Screen Tea Podcast, and the first ever Small Screen Tea! That's right, Lisha and Jules stepped away from the big screen for a moment because there was a spooky Netflix series that was just too good not to talk about: Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass! Do it up with a themed drink this week like your hosts and turn the lights down low as you listen to the dulcet tones of Lisha screeching about the hot, dorky, tragic priest; Jules demanding answers to the hard questions about poison; and both of your hosts admiring everything Mike Flanagan does, period (as well as a ton of crooning over Rahul Kohli and Samantha Sloyan). A little departure seemed in order this fine October, so the podcast takes a trip to Crockett Island to immerse ourselves in some briny, slow-burn monster horror for a while.
Welcome to another fine service here at Creepy Cove Community Church. The only horror themed church on the planet...surely?This is the FULL SERVICE...if you just want the 'sermon/ talk' then check out the SERMON ONLY VERSION next to this one. Rupert Donk opens tonights service with some devastating news about the churches coffee machine...the poltergeist has struck once again! Then we have a very special guest who takes the stage for an interview...yes, we hear from the lovely Father Paul Hill who is taking over from Monsignor Pruitt over on Crockett Island. Father Paul is heading off to Crockett tomorrow, so he has joined our humble church to draw some spiritual inspiration from our congregation. But will he make it through the interview without collapsing? In the interview, he and Rupert discuss how moist Monsignor Pruitt's armpits are, and how this 'unpleasant' bodily feature has led to great wonders.Next we are delighted to have our Bible reading from Lyssiah, who hails from the nearby town of Twin Peaks. After that Peter takes the stage to speak to us on the topic of Dealing With Rejection...sharing a few times he has struggled with rejection himself...but we learn how it does not have to define us. After a Crockett Island themed prayer and meditation, it's over to Father Paul again who turns out to be a most talented troubadour. For he sings a little self-penned ditty for us about his new role at St Saviours on Crockett. A full on cheese fest song called 'I Feel Okay'.Finally, Rupert and Peter discuss the challenges of toe-tapping and maritime drinks before retiring to the bar.And that completes another pleasant and hopefully encouraging service from the windswept church on the peak. They chat about how thirsty the internet is, how it never really felt like they were making a horror show, how the Crockett Island set was built from the ground up, what it's like working with a phenomenal ensemble cast, how Rahul regrets isolating himself during filmmaking, and more! No game this week, Sean is moving to NYC!
I've been a massive fan of Kate Siegel's since 2016's Hush and that enthusiasm for her talent has only grown since the release of The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and now Midnight Mass. Given how much I admire her work, it was the ultimate treat to have Siegel on Collider Ladies Night to learn more about how she got started in the industry and how her craft evolved from project to project. Siegel plays Erin Greene in Midnight Mass. She grew up in the small, isolated community on Crockett Island, but ultimately made the move to the mainland. However, she eventually comes to decide it's best if she returned to Crockett to build a new life for herself and for her baby-on-the-way there. During our Collider Ladies Night conversation, Siegel shared a good deal about her earliest inspirations, her experience studying acting at Syracuse University and how she almost switched to a career in international finance before meeting the person who'd wind up changing her life on screen and off, Mike Flanagan. Check out what she had to say about that, filming an epic jump scare in Haunting of Hill House, how Midnight Mass evolved from novel to Netflix show and more in this edition of Collider Ladies Night! Why start an aftershow before the show is available to watch? Because we are going to first give our overall review and tell you that you need to watch Midnight Mass. (0:00) - Welcome(1:33) - Synopsis(4:37) - Themes(17:56) - Score(20:20) - A Letter From Mike Flanagan Synopsis An isolated island community experiences miraculous events - and frightening omens - after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. Riley also returns home to Crockett island following his incarceration for the accidental slaying of a young woman while he was driving drunk. As we experience a community threatened by the death of their fishing industry, and an aging populace, we suddenly see new life being breathed into the church. Midnight Mass brings us an even handed look at the themes of religion, death, and what it means to live a good life amongst those who do evil even when they believe themselves to be acting in the name of God. Score 10/10 A Letter From Mike Flanagan Welcome to Crockett Island.I'm just going to admit it—Midnight Mass is my favorite project so far. I don't like saying things like that, as filmmakers are meant to fall in love with whatever we are working on at a given time—it'd be impossible to do the work if we didn't—but this one is truly special to me.This project is more than a decade in the making. You may have noticed Midnight Mass as Maddie's novel in Hush, or on the shelf in Gerald's Game—two cameos that let me keep the project alive when it looked like no one would make it. When people on set asked me what Midnight Mass was, I smiled and told them it was the “best thing I never made”.As a former altar boy, about to celebrate 3 years of sobriety, it's not hard to see what makes this so personal. It is also born of the things that scare me the most. The ideas that animate my work always scare me—but the ideas at the root of Midnight Mass terrify me to my core.Horror is an essential genre. It helps us develop bravery and courage in very small increments. It also gives us a safe place to examine the most uncomfortable truths about ourselves as individuals and as a society. The horrors and mysteries of Midnight Mass are some of the deepest—and the darkest—I've ever explored. The isolated community of Crockett Island sits, surrounded by grey water and overcast skies. While there are dark forces at work that are absolutely supernatural, this show is also about the most potent types of horrors—the horrors born of human nature. Horrors of fanaticism, corruption, and blind faith.Along with the figures who lurk in the shadows, whose plans for Crockett Island are far more sinister than we know, this show is about how belief shapes our communities, our world, and our fates. It's a show about faith, fanaticism, addiction, recovery, destruction and redemption. The darkness that animates this story isn't hard to see in our world, unfortunately. We see it in religious and political fundamentalism, in tribalism and racism, in science-denial, in systemic corruption, and in the eyes of normal citizens moved to acts of violence and horror by belief systems that have exploited their prejudices, fears, and blind faith. It speaks to a malignant insanity that has become absolutely normalized in our world. And as Carl Sagan said, “there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.”It's about something else as well: faith itself. One of the great mysteries of human nature. How even in the darkness, in the worst of it, in the absence of light—and hope—we sing.I hope you enjoy our song.Mike FlanaganCreator/ShowrunnerMidnight Mass Press Materials
