Joining the podcast this week is Canauri founder and CTO, Greg Edwards. He gives us a deep dive view into deception technology including decoys, canaries, watcher files, deception technology defense, and how it helps organizations fare against ransomware attacks. We also discuss the growing ransomware problem and its recent designation by the White House as a “national security threat”. And we hit on many of your favorite topics including educating Boards on security and how to define security success, addressing the international cyber crime conundrum, AI and ChatGPT leveraged by attackers, and advice for start-ups including a book recommendation! (Note: Greg has launched a few start-ups and has some great insights!) Greg is the founder and CTO of Canauri (Formally Cryptostopper), a ransomware protection service that automatically detects and stops active ransomware attacks. He has been a technology entrepreneur since 1998 and has founded many businesses. Including Axis Backup, a backup and disaster recovery company for the insurance industry, that he founded a few years before CryptoStopper. He is skilled in disaster recovery, Cloud computing, and Network security just to name a few. In this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with Greg Edwards, CEO of Canauri. Greg shares the process by which Canauri could protect, detect and stop ransomware caused by cybercriminals. He says their system could recognize it, kill it and isolate the machine running the ransomware attacks. He adds that ransomware happens all the time - every 11 seconds every day on average - hitting a business or government entity in the United States. He explains that what the ransomware does is devastating to businesses because it locks down all files, so the owner can no longer access them - without paying the ransom or paying for the backup in full. Greg says the majority of vulnerability, about 50% of ransomware, occurs through email. He says that now, the mass majority of malware that gets through is ransomware. He also says that cyber criminals these days are now financially motivated and their mode of payment is in the form of ransomware. Greg provides a few best practices that users can proactively apply to reduce their risk of being attacked: multiple layers of protection, knowing how many assets you have, ensuring network computers are updated with the latest software and security, good password management, multi-factor authentication, advanced antivirus and endpoint detection and response, and security operations centers. He also recommends working with a cybersecurity expert. Key Points from the Episode: Why Ransomware Should be a Concern for Business Owners? The Most Common Way of Ransomware Attacks Best Practices That Users Can Proactively Apply to Reduce Risk of Ransomware About Greg Edwards: Greg is the CEO of Canauri (formerly Cryptostopper), a ransomware protection service that automatically detects and stops active ransomware attacks. He has been a technology entrepreneur since 1998 and has founded numerous companies, including Axis Backup, a backup and disaster recovery company for the insurance industry, which he founded a few years before CryptoStopper. He specializes in disaster recovery, cloud computing, and network security, to name a few. About Canauri: At Canauri, their goal is to make ransomware protection straightforward and successful – that means faster time-to-detection and fewer false positives. In the pursuit of creating advanced next generation systems, companies have overcomplicated their security solutions and excluded tried and true methods. Ransomware protection should be easy to implement and offer more than just defense; it should give you the upper hand. Canauri gives businesses an advantage over their attackers. By using proven systems which emphasize the essentials, they allow businesses to withstand an attack, even after it's reached the internal network. Their system of traps and decoys lowers the time-to-discovery and safeguards one of the most critical elements of a business, its data. Links Mentioned in this Episode: Want to learn more? This conversation is a must for any business that could be subject to a ransomware attack - that is, almost every organisation! The discussion is with Greg Edwards who has been a technology entrepreneur since 1998. Before Greg founded Canauri, re-branded since our interview from Cryptostopper, he started Axis Backup, a backup and disaster recovery company for the insurance industry. He saw firsthand the rapid increase in the damage cyber criminals were doing with debilitating malware resulting in high financial loss to vulnerable companies. Between 2012 and 2015, one in five of Axis Backup's clients was hit by cybercrime. Greg realized effective cyber security could save businesses from costly downtime and compromised systems. In 2015, Axis Backup was acquired by J2 Global, freeing Greg to create Canauri and focus exclusively on cybersecurity.Canauri's services are available throughout the world through a network of partners - visit the Canauri website for more information: www.canauri.com Contact ABM Risk Partnership email us: info@abmrisk.com.au Tweet us at @4RiskCme Visit our LinkedIn page https://www.linkedin.com/company/18394064/admin/ Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!

In order to fight against ransomware in the cloud, you need to have a multifaceted strategy so you can be better prepared to protect against and respond to attacks. But IT organizations often struggle to understand the priorities and the appropriate approach to mitigate risk and minimize the impact of ransomware. With more tools and software, organizations many times throw money at technology solutions and do not address people and processes not to mention sector-specific controls to help detect, prevent, respond to ransomware not to mention other malware attacks.Listen as we discuss the subject and solutions with Greg Edwards; CEO of CryptoStopper. In this episode we get into:Practical steps to defend against RansomewareThe importance of implementing sector-specific controls as there is no "Onesize fits all solution".The powerful impact you can have by including all of People, Process and Technology

Predicted to be a $20 Billion cybercrime empire by the end of 2021, Ransomware is impacting businesses like never before… resulting in loss of revenue, reputation, and resources for organizations of all types. To put things in perspective, it is reported that an attack hits once every 11 seconds, and as if that stat isn't hard enough to fathom, it's predicted to worsen in the near future. As the war against Ransomware continues, I catch up with Ransomware-focused expert Greg Edwards at BarCode. Greg is the CEO at Cryptostopper, and his mission is to build a superior, global cybersecurity firm to defend businesses from the cybercriminals lurking in the shadows of the Internet. We chat about the evolution of ransomware, recent ransomware attacks, why it's unstoppable, unorthodox variants in the wild, and his ongoing pursuit to stop the bleeding.Tony the Bartender locks down an “Epic Fail”.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/barcodepodcast)
This week we are joined by Greg Edwards, CEO and founder of CryptoStopper, to discuss once again the important topic of ransomware. We talk about the challenges typically experienced by ransomware victims, especially exfiltration and potential exposure of sensitive data. The only way to stop that particular attack is stop the data from being exfiltrated in the first place. CryptoStopper has a way to detect that a ransomware attack has begun, but stopping it before it does any actual damage.

Host Karl caught up with Greg Edwards, founder of CryptoStopper, about the details of how Cryptoware works. He's a great source on this topic since he's built a product to stop ransomware in its tracks. CryptoStopper creates randomly-named files of random sizes to monitor in key locations. Then, they monitor those files as well as other activities on your clients' computers. When CryptoStopper sees ransomware activity, they catch it much earlier than other monitoring services. We dig into some juicy details about how their system works. And, of course, Greg gives us some great details about how the viruses themselves operate. Greg has been a technology entrepreneur since 1998. Before he founded CryptoStopper, he started Axis Backup, a backup and disaster recovery company for the insurance industry. He saw firsthand the rapid increase in the damage cyber criminals were doing with debilitating malware resulting in high financial loss to vulnerable companies.
