There comes a point when the adage "there's an app for that" becomes too on-the-nose.Enterprises need to be able to manage numerous networking and security applications from multiple vendors, but balancing multiple APIs and licenses across those applications creates complexity, Nabil Bukhari, CTO of Extreme Networks, told Light Reading at the company's Extreme Connect event in Paris this week.During this podcast, Bukhari explains the challenges enterprises face in networking and security application management and how the use of AI can simplify network automation and connectivity. But, AI should be used for more than just automating tasks, it should also automate business outcomes, he adds. That could mean "automating the entire process your [networking and security] teams would do anyway" by using AI to troubleshoot problems, remediate issues and catalogue the steps AI took to solve the issue, he says. Kevin Rhodes recalls one of the earliest lessons in his finance career. “I wanted to understand the business,” he tells us, describing his decision to ride along with a Waste Management truck crew. Clipboard in hand, he meticulously recorded stop distances, tonnage collected, and time spent at each location. By the end of the week, he had compiled a customer-by-customer profitability analysis. The results were clear—routes with clustered stops were highly profitable, while distant, scattered pickups drained resources. When he shared his findings, leadership encouraged him to gather more data. The insights led to an initiative that incentivized sales teams to densify routes, improving efficiency and making Rhodes's business unit one of the most profitable in the region. The approach became a company-wide standard. This hands-on, data-driven mindset has shaped Rhodes's leadership across multiple CFO roles. After earning his MBA at Babson College—while working full-time and supporting a growing family—he stepped into his first CFO position at age 32. Since then, he has focused on transforming finance functions beyond traditional reporting, using analytics to guide resource allocation, operational efficiency, and revenue growth. Now at Extreme Networks, Rhodes applies these principles to simplify complex networking solutions and optimize recurring revenue streams. His career illustrates how finance leaders can drive strategy by immersing themselves in operations, leveraging data insights, and aligning financial decisions with long-term business value.

Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com Ep 196 How to take a Federal Network Above and Beyond Today, we see our network being pushed and pulled in every direction: remote users demand access, millions of endpoints must be managed, and wireless networks abound. The Internet we use every day was designed for a much more humble requirement: essentially, bursts of communication between small entities. Our interview with Dan DeBacker from Extreme Networks will define these new requirements and how innovation can keep you up to speed. One of the best podcasts in Washington, DC, is “Feds at the Edge.” It recognizes the rapid decentralization of systems, which has reached the point where some organizations are considering doing the “compute” aspect of the network at the edge. Let me state the obvious: a network that is not optimized will not allow speed to be efficiently achieved. Hybrid networks can increase complexity to the point where speed degenerates and opportunities for malicious actors can appear. During the interview, Dan DeBacker details how methods and techniques can be applied to carefully examine a network and ferret out stealth networks and areas that can “leak” access. When a system is visible, it is easier to incorporate legacy networks and enhance connectivity between sites.

Bob Zemke, Director at Extreme Networks, provides network infrastructure and security solutions to help hospitals build resilient and secure networks. Critical security challenges hospitals face in managing networks include the proliferation of connected devices and the vulnerability of medical devices to cyber threats. In addition to education and collaboration between stakeholders, strategies for reducing security risks include network segmentation, AI-powered monitoring, and behavior analysis to help hospitals proactively address possible threats. Bob explains, "There are multiple factors that we take into play. First, how do we build a resilient network that can handle the amount of devices and traffic types? How do we prioritize the type of traffic flowing through, like the wires of the infrastructure and the wireless connectivity? And then how do we understand through analytics the behavior of those applications so that the healthcare organization, the security team can understand what is standard traffic or potentially rogue behaviors or traffic? What is performance impacting? So, visibility becomes just as important as the segmentation of device types and users on a network." "It's a security and performance risk. And if you think back to guest WiFi, when we started designing this about 20 years ago, we always laughed. It was like, well, we're building it, but how many people will bring a laptop into a hospital and want to connect as a guest user? Or even how many wireless devices compared to wired would be in a hospital network. Fast forward 20 years, you now have more mobile or wireless connected devices than wired in a given hospital network. So, you have to deal with RF performance management and security. And then you have the personal devices, which again, now with the mobile phone, people expect it." #ExtremeNetworks #Cybersecurity #Hospitals #CyberThreats #MedicalDevices #AI #NetworkSecurity #HospitalNetworkSecurity #SecurityRisks #HealthTech #EnhancePatientCare #WiFi extremenetworks.com Download the transcript here

And then you have the personal devices, which again, now with the mobile phone, people expect it." #ExtremeNetworks #Cybersecurity #Hospitals #CyberThreats #MedicalDevices #AI #NetworkSecurity #HospitalNetworkSecurity #SecurityRisks #HealthTech #EnhancePatientCare #WiFi extremenetworks.com Listen to the podcast here
