Maria Morukian (Gen X), recognized organizational development practitioner specializing in training, coaching, and facilitation with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and intercultural competence, joins Yo to discuss trends in DEI, emotions that can be present when leading DEI initiatives, and how “jaggedy” those efforts may appear. They also get into intergenerational expectations and how the societal polarization could be shifting its way back.   Maria is the President of MSM Global Consulting, and an adjunct faculty member at American University's School of International Service.  She previously served in leadership and organizational development positions at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's Federal Executive Institute and the U.S. Department of State. She has worked with such diverse clients as PBS Distribution, the National Park Service, National Institutes of Health, the World Bank, and the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement..   3 Takeaways:  1.   There are numerous emotions likely to be present for leaders when implementing DEI initiatives (fear, shame, courage). 2.   We all want to have a balance of belonging and being recognized four our uniqueness. We want to be known for who we are. 3.   There are complex deeply entrenched systems which have been around for a long time. We have to be willing to see the process as “jaggedy” and may not come out right or the way we hope the first time we try DEI initiatives.   Related Episode: Ep 19, A Model for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion More About Maria:  Maria is a sought-after speaker and has presented at numerous events, including TEDx, the Forum on Workplace Inclusion, the Association for Talent Development, Blacks in Government, and Ellevate Women's Network. In today's episode, we will be discussing why standard diversity training cannot always be effective and we will be exploring alternative approaches to DEI programs. Decades of research have shown that these programs typically produce short-term changes in understanding certain concepts, plans for future behavior, or attitudes, with some studies reporting positive effects and others finding negative effects. Our discussion will focus on biases, including the tendency to feel more at ease with people who are similar to ourselves. Join us to learn more about effective DEI strategies. What We Discussed in this Episode: - Are there sustainable alternatives to solely relying on training for effective DEI? - Quantitatively speaking, is there notable progress in DEI, and how long until we reach a satisfactory level? - Overcoming human bias is crucial for fostering an inclusive workplace culture - how can individuals be trained to mitigate the impact of their biases? - Is having a dedicated DEI function correlated with better performance compared to companies without one? - Should DEI training be mandatory or voluntary for employees? - DEI programs may evoke vulnerability in individuals, highlighting their inherent biases. - How can this risk be transformed into an opportunity for growth and progress? About Maria Morukian Maria Morukian's upbringing was shaped by her multicultural and multilingual family in the outskirts of Detroit. Her father, an Armenian-Cuban refugee, and her mother, who grew up in a small Polish farming community in northern Michigan, instilled in her a positive mindset, a passion for storytelling, and a strong desire to combat oppression. As the President of MSM Global Consulting, Maria specializes in fostering holistic organizational change and leadership development while prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Key topics: Omar's first experience with racism was when he was voted Prom King of his high school in Louisiana. The principal told him that he was “allowed” to be the Prom King to “snitch” on the other Black students. Harris refused, stood up to the principal, and kept his title What happened when Omar L Harris met Ku Klux Klansman David Duke while in high school How he was the only Black product manager, the only Black Director of Marketing and the only Black General Manager outside of Africa, and the only Black General Manager of a global company in the world The psychic toll of assimilation and having to whitewash himself without even realizing it Why he now feels responsible for opening the doors for other Black people How he refuses to compromise his values and will always speak out against racism and discrimination of any kind Why people who are not Black don't understand the full gravity of racism and the dangers of working while Black Why white people who call themselves allies must be willing to speak out and take a stand with friends, family, and colleagues even if parts of their lives unravel as a result How white allies can be more prepared to take action if they practice and prepare for different situations His books on leadership and how they are different than white leadership books. Why it's essential that every CEO needs to take action against racism, or they are not real leaders Check out his playlist, the TV shows he recommends, and the books he reads   Bio OMAR L HARRIS (Charlotte, NC, born in Pittsburgh, PA) is the founder of Intent Consulting and TYMPO.io (the world's first and best SaaS application for employee inclusion), a Former GM (GSK and Allergan), Business and Servant Leadership Thought-Leader, Speaker, Award-Winning Bestselling Author of 5 books, including "Be a J.E.D.I.
