The controversies began before the official opening of the 2023 AVMA Convention in Denver. One debate that resurfaced this year was expanding the scope of practice, review of licensed veterinary technicians' roles, and their permitted professional duties. Despite having no regulatory or enforcement abilities, the AVMA proclaimed it would pledge “to defend against expanding the scope of practice,” particularly in the role of a proposed midlevel practitioner. Unfortunately, the discussions quickly grew to include debates about preventing any establishment of a VCPR by a licensed veterinary technician, going against legislation passed in several states. Viewfinders, we've got a lot to talk about in this episode. Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and President-elect of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), Beckie Mossor, RVT, discuss the recent controversies around expanding the scope of practice and the duties a licensed veterinary technician can perform and how this potentially impacts both the veterinary profession and access to pet care. Viewfinders, this is a critical issue that impacts veterinarians, vet techs, and all members of the veterinary profession. Hey Caffeinators, how are you finding life in vet med these days? That's basically what we asked our guest for this episode, the incomparable Tasha McNerney, BS, CVT, CVPP, VTS(Anesthesia) and just let the conversation go from there! You probably know her as an admin and creator for the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds Facebook page, or perhaps as the creator of the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds podcast (definitely check that out if you haven't already!!), and she was previously a guest on the Vet Tech Cafe in August, 2020. For this episode there was no script, no discussion points we wanted to hit; just an organic discussion of where we're at right now and the exchange of some out-of-the-box ideas. A couple potentially paradigm shifting thoughts from this episode include the idea of a production-based pay scale for veterinary technicians, the abandonment of conference proceedings, and so much more! You'll have to tune in to hear the explanations, rationale, and additional ideas! Join us, won't you? We'd love to hear your thoughts! A frequent guest on the podcast, Stephen Cital RVT, RLAT, SRA, CVPP, VTS- LAM (Res. Anesthesia), recently caused a bit of controversy on vet med social media by taking a very public stand against continuing education conferences held in states harboring laws against women's and LGBTQ+ rights and other social injustices. Stephen decided to “sit out” or boycott speaking at these events, resulting in considerable online chatter. This week, in an exclusive interview, we're thrilled to bring you his side of the story and why it matters to all of us. Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT review Stephen's actions, discuss both the support and criticisms he has received, and practical steps we can all take to stand up for the things we believe in. Viewfinders, this is an important conversation on a topic that many, including us, may find uncomfortable at times. We think it's important to openly (and civilly) address this issue as a profession and hope this sparks conversation - and action - in your world. A huge thanks to Stephen for joining us and bravely sharing his story. On today's show I'm joined by the woman with potentially the new Blunt Dissection record (Sorry Sheilah) for the number of letters after a name, Dr. Robin Downing, DVM, DAAPM, DACVSMR, CVPP, CCRP, CVA, MS in Clinical Bioethics. Robin, who will be familiar to many of you, graduated from Loyola University of Chicago, (where she obtained a degree in English) in 1981 and later from the University of Illinois: College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. Growing up, Dr. Robin had a natural rapport with animals, thanks to her Grandad; and was later pushed towards pursuing her career in veterinary medicine by her partner and now wife. Utilising her degree in English, Robin wrote a weekly column in The Denver Post, as well as multiple magazine articles, short stories, and two books. Meanwhile, using her veterinary degree to transform Windsor Veterinary Clinic into a Practice of Excellence and create The Downing Center for Animal Pain Management. Alongside, this Robin serves as a Trustee for the Morris Animal Foundation and is an affiliate faculty member at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine. It is no wonder that in 2001, she was presented the prestigious Excellence in Veterinary Healthcare Award by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association in Vancouver, and the winner of the 2020 Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award. Now, just before we jump into the episode, a quick word from today's show sponsor which today is the Thrive community. If you are struggling with managing time, feeling like an imposter or burnout then you need to make a change. The good news is that you are not broken or a bad fit for the profession, you are simply missing some super-important skills no-one teaches at university. Skills you will learn as part of the VetX community. Thrive is a RACE accredited professional skills course where members receive training, toolkits and one-to-one coaching to develop these skills. Join hundreds of other vets who have changed their careers for the better as a Thrive member. To learn more and find out if the class is a good fit for you visit www.vetxinternational.com today. Now back to the show... This episode is both a heartwarming and heart-wrenching story of Robin's life, (she now holds a second record for the first guest to make me cry) as she recalls her struggles of being both gay and a woman in the 1980s veterinary industry, how her dog stopped her from taking her own life, discusses how every vet should use a bioethical framework, and outlines her hopes to influence human medicine. Expect to laugh, cry, and be truly amazed by the remarkable Dr. Robin Downing.
Rehabilitation in the US has become more and more accessible to the general public/pet owners in the last 10-15 years. The emergence of modalities like the PiezoWave2 allows for the treatment of more conditions to help make these animals feel better. As Rehabilitation Practitioner with Veterinary Surgical Centers, Dr. Oliver works closely with primary veterinarians and pet owners to develop customized physical rehabilitation and pain management plans for pets facing injury, illness, quality of life issues, and much more.
