The Lakers made some roster moves, waiving D'Moi Hodge and Alex Fudge from their two-way contracts and signing forward Dylan Windler and point guard Skylar Mays to replace them. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss these moves, with a look at how the Mays addition impacts rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino and allows him to get more minutes in the G-League for reps and court time as part of his development. And then later, the guys discuss the team's ongoing pursuit of workable lineups -- particularly the groups that play with LeBron and AD, which have not been as productive this season as in year's past. The Lakers are among a group of teams across the NBA interested in signing free agent forward Christian Wood. One reason? Rob Pelinka would like to sign another big who doesn't share the same profile as Jaxson Hayes. Wood certainly qualifies there, with a much more polished offensive game and a general degree of skill Hayes has yet to come close to matching. On the other hand, he makes Hayes look like a DPOY candidate. So who is the competition for Wood? How long is this going to take to resolve itself? And is Wood the best option available for the Lakers, anyway? Are the Lakers better off here with a player who has a higher ceiling, but a lower floor, than a guy like Bismack Biyombo? For all of his shortcomings, Biyombo has an elite-level skill (rim protection) that will come in handy whether the Lakers have Anthony Davis in the lineup or not. What about Collin Castleton? Could he end up picking up some minutes for LA? Meanwhile... it's time to review the Summer Pro League experience for the Lakers. While the win/loss record doesn't matter, it's pretty easy to look at the important players the Lakers put out on the floor and leave impressed by what they did. For starters, Max Christie looked like he didn't belong in SPL because he was too good. That's exactly what you'd want from a guy in his second year (made more impressive because Christie is still younger than most of the players he was up against). Castelton and D'Moi Hodge both played like guys who understand how they can get on, and then stay on, an NBA roster. Smart, fundamentally sound, no loose risks with the ball, defined skill sets that can be utilized by a coaching staff. (Hodge, defense and shooting and Castleton, defense). No surprise both are older players, who the Lakers would love to see enter the rotation earlier rather than later. What about Jalen Hood-Schifino? He didn't shoot well, but what about the rest of his game? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who are the Lakers competing against for Christian Wood's services? It's official. During Wednesday's ESPY Awards, LeBron James confirmed he's not retiring and will return to the Lakers. You may go on living the lives you were already engaged in with no change whatsoever. But all jokes aside, while the news wasn't necessarily even news by this point, there was some interesting psychology with LeBron's theatricality, as well as what we suspect was actually going on in his head when he floated the idea of hanging up his sneaks for good. In the meantime, Darvin Ham is nothing if not confident. So when visiting the #thisleague UNCUT podcast with Chris Haynes and Marc Stein, maybe it shouldn't be surprising that Ham had some spicy moments. Those 10 teams that passed him up and hired other guys? They "****ed up, royally," he said. Denver coach Mike Malone, who (along with his team) spent an unusual amount of post-title time talking about beating the Lakers? Ham heard, and remembers. "Oh wow, bring up ‘Money Mike,' the Lakers' daddy, right? That's what they call him now, the Lakers' Daddy… God bless his soul. This shit ain't over. God bless his soul.” Could Lakers vs. Nuggets be one of the first rivalries to be boosted heavily by the two coaches, as opposed to stuff that happened specifically on the floor? Because that WCF wasn't super chippy. But now? As Darvin says, "This **** ain't over." Finally, D'Moi Hodge hit 6 of his 13 3-pointers in Wednesday's SPL loss to the Celtics. He's now shooting about 41% from downtown in Vegas, on 9 shots a game. Hodge knows exactly what will get him in the league, and keep him there: Shooting and defense. And the two-way player out of Missouri, who is already 24 and doesn't have time to screw around if he wants to make it in the NBA, has a role model that Lakers fans will recognize and respect. His choice shows tremendous self-awareness, and I'm sure impresses the Lakers. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: At the ESPY Awards, LeBron James Confirms he's not Retiring SEGMENT 2: Ham has words for Mike Malone. We talk about Mizzou football's recent big recruiting weekend as the Tigers hosted several 2024 recruits including five stars Williams Nwaneri and Ryan Wingo and made four-star linebacker Brian Huff's final four schools. We break down where Mizzou stands with those recruits and talk commitment timelines (00:00:00-00:16:47). Quick Hits: D'Moi Hodge and Kobe Brown battle for L.A., Marcus Smart is a Grizzly, the Las Vegas Aces are a powerhouse, Zuckerberg and Elon's cage match, Adam Wainwright, Gradey Dick's NBA Draft fit, homers galore for the Angles, Steve Cishek coaching in the Cape Cod League, an all-time Twitter prediction, the kid that got into the NBA Draft and former guest Jacob Infante's ratio (00:16:47-00:38:22). We finish the show talking about Kobe Brown being selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, reflect on his four-year career with the Tigers, break down how he could fit into the Clippers' rotation and talk about his teammate from last season D'Moi Hodge signing with the Lakers shortly after the draft (00:38:22-00:55:01).
The Lakers added four players in last week's NBA Draft: First round pick Jalen Hood-Schifino (G, Indiana), Maxwell Lewis (F, Pepperdine) in the second round, and two undrafted players signed to two-way contracts (D'Moi Hodge, G, Missouri and Colin Castleton, C, Florida). They also signed Florida F Alex Fudge to an Exhibit 10 deal. Generally speaking, the the Lakers' draft was well-received by those who grade this sort of thing, but who exactly did they get? What are the strengths and weaknesses? We bring back Lakers draft expert Mike Garcia (@canyondriver) to take a deep dive into the newest members of the purple and gold. It starts with Hood-Schifino. What are his most translatable NBA skills? Who are his comps? (Is it weird to watch his film and think of a right-handed D'Angelo Russell?) Can he defend at a high enough level to earn minutes as a rookie? What about concerns around his 3-point shooting and finishing ability? Mike breaks down all of Hood-Schifino's strengths and weaknesses. Meanwhile, Maxwell Lewis comes from Pepperdine with a lot of potential as a shooter, scorer and defender, but plenty of rough edges to iron out. What are the chances he can get that done? How long of a learning curve are the Lakers realistically looking at for a guy who has tools but needs some refining? Unlike Hood-Schifino, Lewis won't be expected to contribute next year. And what about the two-way contracts, in Castleton and Hodge? The latter was a very accurate, high-volume shooter for the Tigers - and there's always room for shooters in the NBA - but the former might have an easier path to some floor time should he pan out, given the current makeup of the roster. And then there's Fudge, a player Garcia hoped the Lakers might find a way to get. High energy, great athlete, real potential as a defender. Bernie talks about how he's optimistic about Mizzou basketball after the team's win Tuesday at Ole Miss. Bernie highlights the impact Isiaih Mosley and Mohammed Diarra are making with their insertation into the rotation. He also points out how promising it was to see D'Moi Hodge regain his scoring touch. He then takes a trip down memory lane as he recaps the 2001 4 OT win over Iowa State in Columbia as the Cyclones return to town on Saturday.
Recovering from shoulder surgery is often complicated. Mizzou has to get a transfer-portal QB. Plus, grades for Kobe Brown, D'Moi Hodge, Nick Honor, and more. *** Follow Locked On Mizzou for FREE, and never miss an episode: LockedOnMizzou.com
As predicted, Kentucky vs Missouri basketball was an ugly one for the Wildcats. On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe discusses John Calipairi's first loss in an SEC opener in five years. Oscar Tshiebwe got it done statistically but was hounded on the defensive end. The team couldn't stop Missouri's transition offense, led by Kobe Brown and D'Moi Hodge. The Kentucky Wildcats have a problem. And there are no signs of it being solved anytime soon. Jacob Toppin has lost his starting spot. Odd, considering his replacement Lance Ware doesn't work well at PF. Sahvir Wheeler and Cason Wallace aren't the problem, but they were not heroes vs the Tigers. Why is this team struggling to find an identity? Lance shares his thoughts. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. The Missouri-Louisiana Tech football game has officially been moved to Thursday, Sept. 1. To me, one of the Mizzou basketball additions is quite a bit more promising than the other to me. Gymnastics finishes fifth nationally. Plus, Coach Drinkwitz was sold as a quarterback expert, but his handling of Connor Bazelak doesn't make much sense. Plus, it's obvious he isn't a fan of Brady Cook as a player, but should we trust Eli's judgment? *** Follow Locked On Mizzou for FREE, and never miss an episode:
