Hi Friends! Happy to bring you the latest episode, starring Rodney McCoy AKA Daddy Rod. Rod's appearance (I'm pretty sure) marks the first instance of a romantic couple appearing in back to back episodes, as he is the partner of 2x DetoxPod guest Damon Jacobs. Like Damon, Rodney is an activist for sexual health. But he has a story all his own. Rod and I connect over our shared Brooklyn upbringing, and the unique local pride that stays with you even when you move away. Rod also shares his coming out story, tying it in with familial hypocrisy and an understanding of the times (late '80s/early '90s). We also discuss issues around consent, and how a greater discussion needs to take place in sex positive circles that include gay and bi men. Of course, it's all part of our shared quest to expand the definitions of what masculinity means so that it calls in, rather than excludes. It's the first of what I'm pretty sure will be several conversations we have for this pod. Also, Rod has his own podcast called "Listen to Daddy" that you can check out here!

I'm happy to welcome my friend Damon Jacobs BACK to the show, on a less-than-ten-episode turnaround. Damon is an NYC-based therapist who also hosts a great podcast called Tub Talks, and has been on the frontline of queer advocacy and STI (specifically HIV) awareness for years. Damon and I reconnect to talk about life in the new American presidential administration, and how to keep your wits about you when it seems like the world is falling apart. We discuss spirituality in depth, and it was really interesting to hear how someone else approaches their relationship with the universe. Of course, the topic of maintaining and cultivating community comes up, as I feel like it's an essential part of enjoying life even in the best of times and becomes even more important as we navigate turmoil. I'll admit to not being in a great place when this episode was recorded (I haven't been in a great place for most of 2025 if we're being honest), and Damon's words were enough to give me a re-think about how I'm getting through these days. I hope you get something uplifting and hopeful out of this episode. Feel free to leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

Damon Jacobs, New York-based MFT, advocate and HIV prevention educator, author, and expert in the field of PrEP joins the show today. He and David discuss what PrEP is, where people can get it, and the major changes it is making in the field of HIV and harm reduction. Damon discusses the changes PrEP has made since it’s come out, who could benefit from using it, and the amazing avenues he and his team are providing for intelligent and meaningful conversations on the subject.   TAKEAWAYS: [1:43] PrEP is the use of the antiretroviral drug Truvada, to prevent zero conversion of HIV, should someone be exposed. [2:05] Damon has been an HIV Prevention Educator since 1991, a time when communities were being decimated by the AIDS epidemic. Damon saw that to have integrity in the role, it meant he needed to get out and help communities learn about safe sex to the best of his own ability. He personally started using PrEP in 2011, and the FDA approved it in 2012. [5:53] PrEP is a daily pill that blocks the T cells of someone with HIV duplicating and replicating in the individual taking the pill Truvada, which is a combination of two drugs, tenofovir and emtricitabine. [9:30] Damon sees some of the positive “side effects” of PrEP being that people are getting more physicals, and getting regular STI checks. [12:07] The Magnet Clinic in San Francisco reported that 91% of people they start on PrEP come to their clinic because they already gave up using condoms, or they are inconsistent in their use. [14:53] Studies have shown that you may not need to take PrEP daily if you are able to predict and organize when you do have sex. You can double up on use, but it is something that should be discussed with an expert. [19:14] Damon’s Facebook group, PrEP Facts Rethinking HIV Prevention and Sex, has 21,200 international members and is a safe place for people to come and have intelligent and meaningful conversations about the subject. [22:17] The U.S. has seen a historical drop from 50,000 new cases a year to 38,000 new cases, and PrEP was partially attributed to that. There are also drops in new HIV diagnosis in cities where it is widely implemented and normalized like San Francisco and New York. [24:31] There are many avenues for people in the United States to get PrEP for a low cost or free because of existing financial support systems. [27:28] There are three documented cases where an individual was adhering to PrEP and they did acquire HIV. However, there is very little risk involved and the benefits are huge.   RESOURCES: Magnet Clinic Dr. Dave Glidden PrEP Facts CDC Patient Advocate Foundation U=U PrEPLocator.org PrEPforsex.org DamonLJacobs.com Rational Relating Absolutely Should-Less   QUOTES: ● “We can recall that knowing people with AIDS meant losing people to AIDS.” ● “PrEP will soon be an umbrella term, like the way we use birth control today, to describe different interventions.” ● “You don’t need an agency anymore, a WiFi connection will get the word out about PrEP.” ● “There is no more exciting time than now to be doing this work.”

Bareback Privilege and the Demise of Risk-AversionThere's a new kind of gay male sexual privilege, one that’s entering dangerous areas of health, disease control, and prejudice: gay men who are on PrEP and only have bareback sex. There Is Risk in Everything We Do“As renowned PrEP educator and marriage and family therapist, Damon Jacobs, thoughtfully pointed out in a piece for The Advocate titled, “Sex With PrEP, Like Life, Is Never Without Risk,” 133 pedestrians are killed in New York City each year by cars. Just walking out on the street is dangerous. There’s risk in everything we do.”SourceThis period in history – the use of PrEP – reminds me of HIV shaming that happened in the 80s and 90s. Gay men who were negative (or thought they were) would shame HIV+ men by shunning them, which was most visible in online dating profile. You could read ads that said, “HIV- only”, or “Only safe and clean”, etc.. The truth is that anyone could lie and say they were HIV- or simply not disclose if not asked.I remember having sex with a guy I met sometime early 2000s. I was fucking him with a condom and I noticed he had a tattoo of an AIDS ribbon. It was in an innocuous place that I only saw because of the position of his legs in sex. It took me out of the moment and confronted me with my own prejudice, but we keep playing and the sex ended well. It was a reminder to me that if I was protecting myself, I could relax. I hadn’t asked him prior to meeting about his status, probably because HIV had been around for over 20 years and the routine of asking, or being freaked out about someone having HIV had diminished – but clearly my fears and prejudice had not.Human Behaviour and Unconscious ChoicesWe often make choices that are not in alignment with our best judgement, let alone our values, when we are denied something we want. In this case, the denial of affection and sex based on prejudice can lead to unhealthy choices and behaviours. In the late 90’s I witnessed the rise of so-called “bug-chasers”; individuals who actively sought HIV+ partners to agree to fuck them raw in the hope of seroconversion. Their desire was to have what they felt was denied them, the freedom to have sex “the way nature intended”.Basic Human NeedsThese choices – that of the bug-chaser to seek seroconversion – were psychological, based in human need and self-worth. Add onto these choices the social fabric of exclusion, being “othered”, not feeling accepted for who you are as a gay or trans man, and so on. Many of us took a self-righteous approach, assuming a higher moral ground, when in fact, there were many of us who secretly longed to ditch condoms and just “get it over with.” This is part of what lead to the term, “condom fatigue”, which sadly misses the real and deeper human truth entirely. As an already oppressed and marginalized group, now you’ve taken away our freedom to have sex however, and with whomever we want. The golden age of free, uninhibited gay sex was over. We had lost, what felt like, our only privilege. What is this universe we live in now?For the longest time you were taught to ask about your partner’s status, and many HIV- men had to face rejection on an all-too-regular basis. Then dating apps allowed users to select HIV status, sexual preferences, last testing date, and options like “negative on PrEP”, etc. While those options are useful for making choices – having too many choices is problematic. Psychologically, when we are faced with too many choices, we have a hard time making a decision. We see this in supermarket research on consumers buying behaviours. If you have a shelf for jams and you have 10 flavours, with five companies offering the same 10 flavours, how do you choose? What if three of the brands are all on sale? Now make the comparison to the list of labels on a profile on Grindr or Scruff. Sometimes there are so many variables, not including the personal description that may be see...Support the Think Queerly Podcast!

Jonny McGovern is back on OUTSpoken & Talking with Sex is Back – Damon Jacobs Will Help Answer your Questions 2016-4-17OUTSpoken“HEY QWEEN”, THE GAYEST TALK SHOW OF ALL TIME, GETS A MAKE-OVER FOR ITS FOURTH RAUCOUS SEASON January 25, 2016 – NEW YORK: Hey Qween!, the world’s gayest talk show of all time, is getting a face-lift this winter. When the show returns for its fourth season next month, it will debut a sexy new look and sound. For three hilarious seasons, comedian Jonny McGovern and his co-host Lady Red Couture have welcomed many of the countries top LGBT and drag talent − including RuPaul, Laganga Estranja, and Candis Cayne − to their couch. On February 15th,Hey Qween! launches its fourth raucous season ontheStream.tv. “Hey Qween! is a place for gay stars and underground legends to come and tell their stories in a way they can’t on any other talk show,” explains host and executive producer, Jonny McGovern. “We cut up, have a kiki and a gay ‘ol time. Then, at the end of every show, the special guest gets a trophy and a lap dance from one of our in-house strippers! It’s a half hour of pure merriment.” “You don’t have to be gay to be on Hey Qween!,’ he adds. “Just gay friendly and ready for fun.” Lots of changes are in store for the upcoming season of Hey Qween! including a brand new set and the addition of a regular cast member. Billboard charting vocalist Adam Joseph joins the gang as bandleader of “Adam Joseph and The Go To Bed Wigs”. “For years our show has been called The Tonight Show if Johnny Carson was a big gay lumberjack and Ed McMahon was the largest drag queen in captivity,” continues McGovern. “Now we got a glittery twink version of Doc Severinsen.” Adam Joseph has a long association with Jonny McGovern. He is the voice of the Hey Qween! theme song and the music producer behind all of McGovern’s albums. The addition of a bandleader will mean more music parodies and comedy to the show. Also new will be a series of “Drag Besties” episodes, kicking off with Detox and Vicky Vox of the Drag supergroup DWV. Fan-favorite segments returning this season are “Betta As a Bitch Track”, where the show trolls the trolls, turning real life negative comments from the Internet into over-the-top “bitch tracks” and the “Look At Huh!” game, where guests share their personal stories of celebrities. Jonny “The Gay Pimp” McGovern’s career began in 2003 with Dirty Gay Hits, a collection of hilarious gay themed songs. The video release of “Soccer Practice” from the album received over three million downloads and was added to rotation on MTV Europe and MTV Asia, making Jonny an international phenomenon. Soon, he was appearing all over the airwaves, on The Ricky Lake Show, VH1’s Best Week Ever, Comedy Central’s Out on the Edge, and more. Jonny eventually caught the eye of Rosie O’Donnell, who cast him as a lead player on her LOGO-TV comedy show, The Big Gay Sketch Show. “Working with Jonny is one of the joys of my life,” says Lady Red Couture from the Hey Qween! set in Hollywood. “He’s so sweet. I’ll never forget when RuPaul came to visit and we were filming the opening banter and I messed up. So Jonny says, ‘Don’t be nervous because RuPaul is here.’ Then RuPaul says, ‘DO be nervous because RuPaul is here!’ Oh, I wet myself laughing!” “We’ve become the best of friends making Hey Qween!“ reflects Jonny McGovern of his relationship with Lady Red Couture. “She’s such a quick wit and naturally funny. People think that because I’m executive producer of the show, I also direct her. You don’t ever make Lady Red do anything. If she’s eating on the show, its cause the bitch wants a snack! I just let Lady Red be herself and that’s more than enough.” Hey Qween! has been so successful for theStream.tv, the online network launched the show as its own YouTube channel and has plans to launch a stand-alone website. The show has also spawned several spin-offs, including the Look At Huh! aftershow that began airing last spring. In March, theStream.tv will begin airing the second seasons of: Judge Lady Red, a court show with Lady Red presiding over the disputes of young queens and deciding whether it’s ‘Shade’ or ‘No Shade’; He’s Fit, a parody of fitness shows starring lap dancer Greg McKeon as he competes in flex battles against Instagram hotties; and Hot T, a bi-weekly gossip show with Julie Goldman and Brandy Howard (from Bravo’s The People’s Couch) breaking down the hot topics of the week. A new advice show, Hey Qween Can I Axe You A Question?, will premiere later this season. “We’re thrilled to bring back Hey Qween! for a fourth season,” says theStream.tv’s Susan Wrenn. “Jonny and Lady Red are both so talented and passionate about what they do. Their creativity inspires everyone here at theStream.tv.” Look for Jonny McGovern and Lady Red Couture this summer when they host Pride Festivals and bring their Hey Qween!nightclub show to cities across the country. Bob Christie is a Vancouver filmmaker, activist, and scholar exploring the intersections of documentary cinema, entertainment and social justice. His 2009 feature Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride won several festival awards and was broadcast on cable television throughout North America, in Europe and South America. With fifteen years experience in the film and television industry, Bob has also directed and produced a feature documentary about his family that received funding from the National Film Board of Canada, as well as short films, music videos, television commercials and Internet content. In 2014 he completed an MA in Comparative Media Arts at Simon Fraser University with research that focuses on queer documentary cinema and social justice activism. Abstract of MA Research While touring to film festivals with my documentary Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride, I noticed a new attitude in queer cinema. Instead of exploring isolation, difference and separation from mainstream culture, queer cinema of the new millennium places LGBT* people within larger society, often as a vital and valuable part of the broader social fabric. There is also a confidence, optimism, and often an outright joyfulness in recent queer cinema. My research investigates the development of these two trends – the homosocial and joy – in conjunction with theories of affect, queer documentaries, and social justice activism. It follows contemporary scholars, including Nick Davis and Laura Marks, who have expanded on Deleuzian image theories. I argue that LGBT* documentaries of the new millennium expresses reterritorialized queerness that is affecting people individually and collectively, forming social memories and new understandings of gender and sexuality. As well, these processes are accelerating and expanding faster than ever before, due to the affordability of production and distribution made possible by new media technology. Two other central films of the study are United in Anger: A History of Act Up and the hilarious New Zealand favorite Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls.   Pride organizer examines the role and relevance of Gay Pride events around the world – from the extremes of protest to the heights of celebration.   Winner – Best Film – Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival: Indianapolis IN, USA Winner – Best Documentary (Jury Prize): Image + Nation, Montreal QC, Canada Winner – Best Documentary: Q Cinema Fort Worth TX, USA Winner – Best Documentary: Fairy Tales, Calgary AB, Canada Winner – Best Documentary (Jury & Audience Awards) Three Dollar Bill: Seattle WA, USA Winner – Best Documentary, Out on Film: Atlanta GA, USA Winner – Best Documentary, Reel Pride, Winnipeg MB, Canada Winner – Best Documentary, Inside Out Ottawa Gatineau, Ottawa ON Winner – Best Documentary, Miami LGBT Film Festival, Miami FL, USA Canadian Gala – Victoria Film Festival: Victoria BC, Canada Opening Gala – Boston LGBT Film Festival: Boston MA, USA Official Selection – Cleveland International Film Festival: Cleveland OH, USA Official Selection – Frameline 34: San Francisco CA, USA Official Selection – This Human World: Vienna Austria *Screened at over sixty film festivals and Pride events around the world.* *Showtime USA* *Super Channel Canada* “A riveting and enlightening documentary on the politics and relevance of the global gay pride movement.” –Michael D. Reid, Times Colonist From the elegant symbolism of the empty flatbed concluding Sao Paulo’s mammoth pride parade, to Moscow Pride organizer Nikolai Alekseev’s Byzantine ingenuity and dogged determination, Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride is a moving portrait of international LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Transsexual) struggles for human rights. Vancouver Pride Parade President, Ken Coolen explains the vast differences between marches and parades, and the importance of confronting the “authorities in your own communities,” as he visits countries where attempting to stage pride festivities invites extreme reactions. Director Bob Christie teams up with Aerlyn Weissman (Forbidden Love) in this panoramic meditation on the relationship between Gay Pride and mainstream society. A refreshing and clearly Western perspective on LGBT rights at home and abroad, it features generous footage of local Pride events, and tense yet poignant interviews around the world with an international roster of LGBT human rights heroes. Beyond Gay reflects an emerging trend in which those listless and stagnant Pride celebrations return to their fiercely flamboyant roots – by expressing an international solidarity with oppressed LGBT people everywhere. As Tomasz Baczkowski, President of Warsaw Equality Parade eloquently states, “if it’s a movement, a pride movement… then we should move something.” “An amazing film that needs to be seen by anyone in any community who wants to be moved and have their world view expanded.  This is a terrific gift to our collective human rights history.” – Stuart Milk, activist and nephew of the late Harvey Milk. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's Talk About Sex with Damon Jacobs
