This week I give a few thoughts from Ground Zero—Ottawa during the week of May 6-10, 2024. Elaine and I have driven across the country from Northern BC to attend the National Prayer Breakfast and the National March for Life. We've also had the pleasure and privilege of meeting with CHP EDAs along the way. We met with members and others in Lethbridge and Calgary (AB), Broadview (SK), Winnipeg (MB), Sarnia, Listowel, Oro-Medonte/Orillia, Niagara West, Norwich, Ingersoll (ON) and will be touching base with others on our return through Northern Ontario, Saskatoon, Lloydminster and Morinville (near Edmonton, AB). Just a few thoughts from the nation's capital as we prepare for the March for Life.
We conclude our 3 part series in conversation with women in Fire Alarm. Recorded earlier this year in Winnipeg MB. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Omena Babalola is an accomplished 55-year old masters sprinter from Winnipeg MB and an absolute force to be reckoned with. Born in Nigeria to two high achieving parents, Omena came to Canada in her early 20s and spent time on Prince Edward Island before completing her MBA at St. Mary's University in Halifax and following her man to Winnipeg. Omena currently works as a Professional Auditor at Manitoba Hydro and is the Vice President of Athletics Manitoba. As for her start in athletics, Omena describes what it was like to “be so slow when her mom was so fast.” Despite coming dead last in her first foot race, Omena stuck with sprinting and chose to focus most of her energy on things that would give her the biggest return on investment. It turns out this is a valuable life skill off the track as well. After taking some time off while having her twins in 1997, Omena was re-inspired in her late 30's by Saskatchewan-based sprinting legend Carol LaFayette-Boyd, who is over 25 years her senior. Carol gave Omena some positive words of encouragement about her potential, she decided to re-engage with competition and, as they say, the rest is history.Omena still holds numerous university and provincial sprinting records and has medaled on national and international stages in the 200m as well as the 4x100m relay. In 2023, Omena was awarded female masters Athlete of the Year by Athletics Manitoba.Connect with Omena:Instagram: @omenab7828Facebook: @omena.babsConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! Jacques, of Screaming at Traffic out of Winnipeg MB, joins us to talk about how the pandemic put their West Coast Tour to a stop four years ago almost to the day, PouzzaFest, what does YBF stand for?, their new and upcoming album and a tour in the near future. (And more of course, like any family relations?)
In 2005, Pearl Jam dedicated the month of September to tour across an area they've never touched from coast to coast - the great plains and prairies of Canada. 17 shows over 24 days led to some absolute classics from this band that may get forgotten over time, but that's part of why we're here is to keep the discussion alive! This show in Winnipeg that we're covering in this episode is a great example of a Canadian small town that never hosted Pearl Jam before this tour attempt, and the crowd ended up delivering big time. At the newly built arena that would later become the home of the reformed Winnipeg Jets, Pearl Jam happened to draw the largest capacity audience for the one year since it had been built. From the bootleg, you can tell that there isn't a single seat empty in the building. That led the band to pull out some surprises that you almost never get to see at normal shows, such as Better Man opening the night, Blood closing encore 1 after Alive, and Indifference opening the second encore. With plenty of Neil Young references and a wonderful moment where a fan got her request for Smile granted, nearly every song has their moment in the sun at this show. Lest we forget, a little flip phone call during Daughter that leads to a fun moment. Not only will we dig into the strength of the crowd here, but we'll have the Gear Guru step in and do a little breakdown on Stone during Not For You and Do The Evolution, and he'll also breakdown why Mike's modem was running at the end of Blood. Sara Morrison is a 40-year old phys ed teacher and busy mom-of-two from Winnipeg MB. She took up running as a convenient way to stay fit in her early 30s after her second child was born and quickly fell in love with the half marathon distance. Sara never had much interest in running a marathon back then but thought if there was ever a time to do it, it would be for her 40th birthday in 2022. And since her birthday is in November, the obvious choice was the NYC Marathon. When she didn't get in through the lottery, Sara decided to partner with the charity CURE Epilepsy, which is near and dear to her heart, and went on to raise over $5000 for that cause.Sara knew she would benefit from some support with her training so she reached out to Carolyn for coaching last spring. In this episode she tells us about the many highs and lows she faced during the training cycle, as well as two incredibly stressful events that happened in the days leading up to the November 6th race, which was forecast to be one of the hottest and most humid days in NYC Marathon history. Somehow, despite all the challenges, Sara managed to collect herself and run one of the smartest, most textbook first marathons we have ever seen! THE "CURLING AS A KID & BEYOND!" SERIES: Episode #2This episode is part of a series where I interview current and former competitive curlers to find out how they grew to love the sport of curling as a young person. In addition, I'll ask some of them what it's like to coach young people. And, in other cases, I'll ask them what it's like having their own children in the sport. In 2019, a TSN poll named Jill Officer the greatest female second in Canadian curling history. In this episode, I ask her how she first got involved in the sport and when she decided to take the sport more seriously. We discuss the challenges of teaching kids and what she considered when her own daughter decided to take up the sport. Finally, we talk about her current goals and what she'll be doing for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Some of the topics we discuss include:* Growing up in Winnipeg (2:52)* Starting curling at age 10 and her mom's hesitation to get her into the junior league (7:25)* What attracted Jill to curling and what other sport she might have played (11:16)* Playing against Jennifer Jones and eventually being asked to be on her team (15:05)* Getting pranked by Team Sandra Schmirler in Bern, Switzerland (22:12)* The coaching lessons that Jill learned when she taught a kid at curling camp how to throw a draw when all he could do was hit (26:57)* Why her daughter started curling at 9 years old (32:36)* Jill's advice to parents who want to introduce curling to their kids (37:19)* THE BIG QUESTION: How do we get kids to fall in love with the sport of curling and stay with it for the long-term? (39:56)* Not every kid needs to be trained to be "competitive" (43:56)* Going back to university! (44:55)* Being an "athlete mentor" for the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing (45:41)Links to the resources mentioned in this episode:Jill's Twitter Account:https://twitter.com/JillOfficerJill's Instagram Account:https://www.instagram.com/jillofficer/"Jill Officer named Olympics mentor" article (May 13/21) from Winnipeg Free Presshttps://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/curling/jill-officer-named-olympics-mentor-574416352.html"Canada's Greatest Curlers: Officer named greatest second after running away with vote" article (Feb 19/19) from TSN.ca Web sitehttps://www.tsn.ca/canada-s-greatest-curlers-officer-named-greatest-second-after-running-away-with-vote-1.1253747Follow our podcast on Twitter: @kidscurlingGlenn Gabriel is an NCCP-certified curling coach who lives in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. today is episode 39, and we have a pretty exciting interview for you with Revolution Trailer Uplifting in Winnipeg MB, who we met and fell in love with on Instagram, and asked if we could interview them for the show. Lucky for us, they agreed and Fiona and I got to fill our little HGTV-obsessed hearts full. If you've ever even thought about casting the beiges and browns of your rig aside and renovating your trailer to a more relaxing esthetic (a la RV Fixer Upper – if you know, you know) – this is the Canadian place to do it. On our way West, we stopped by to tour the Revolution Studio, and chat with Meghan who coordinates nearly every aspect of the process with clients and we were thrilled to see how the work gets done and learn a little more about the process in general. For more on Revolution Trailers, or to see their work - Check out their website , Instagram , or Facebook

Tétro has been creating amazing work and serving the Winnipeg area and beyond for over 21 years now. Part 1 of this interview is all about their stories and individual journeys to coming together as a couple and then starting the studio. Andrea was more of the "childhood art director", and Paul was more into the fundamentals of design and really understanding the nuts and bolts of it. He tells us about the first logo where design and the "why" really connected for him. We talk about inspirational designers to them and about design in Canada.

While trying to escape a crowd of adoring fans, movie star Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) hops into a passing car driven by Kelly Selden (Debbie Reynolds) in singing in the rain when they are introduced to each other for the first time. Or maybe you're more familiar with the taxi cab scene in "When Harry met Sally"... These are just some of the examples of what is known as the “Meet Cute”. Whats a Meet Cute you're asking? Its the scene in a movie which two individuals are brought together in some unlikely, zany, destined-to-fall-in-love-and-be-together-forever sort of way. The scenario: you meet another couple at a house party and they tell you how they met. It’s a lovely story that makes your story look like garbage. So on the fly you pick your favourite movie with an over the top meet cute and use that instead. Movies being used this week are American Pie 2, The Thomas Crown Affair, Old school and Speed Cast: Micheal Petrow, Martin Navarro , Mark Cowell and Steve Taylor Trailer of the week : Rambo Last Blood and Terminator Dark Fate. Superman. Batman. Spiderman. Iron Man. Xmen. The list of heroes and the groups that that they belong to has historically ended with the suffix "man" Today on the Reel Debaters we a trending away from all things masculine and celebrating the female super hero and all their glory. The scenario is this: For the day you are given Nick Furries ( think GM of a sports franchise if you don't know who he is) duties to assemble a 4 person super hero team, sort of a football fantasy draft for comic book personalities if you will. Who is your lead female hero and why. We left everything on the table when it came to how we were allowed to pick and argue. Hero or Villain didn't matter. We allowed personality traits and all powers and capabilities as well as we are not limited to any super hero dynasty ( Marvel or DC, was fair game) and prove your argument as to why your pick is the most bad ass of them all. Characters Being argued are from the movies Suicide Squad, Dr Strange, Thor Ragnerock and the Xmen series In the living room this week in order of least to most facial hair are Martin Navarro, Mark Cowell, Chris Stanton and Micheal Petrow. Trailer of the week: Spiderman , Far from Home SPOILER ALERT: This week on our catch up and what did watch portion we've all finally seen Avengers; Endgame so if you still have yet to see it skip to the second hour of the show, this went DEEP! Do or do not podcast , there is no try. This week on the Reel Debaters we switched gears for a minute. Instead of the debate format we’ve been giving you we decided to have a fire side conversation (sans fire) in honour of Star Wars and May the 4th be with you weekend. This is clearly a topic that has been argued over and over and over again so we tossed some of the more commonly known topics (who shot first, Han or Greedo?) out there to give our take on them as well as ones that are more current with where Star Wars is today (Can Disney make it work now that movies are on hold)? In the living room is Martin “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for” Navarro, Steve “May the force be with you” Taylor and Micheal “do or do not there is no try” Petrow. Scene: It's a Zombie Apocalypse You and 4 of your friends are cornered by a horde of walkers You are each given one hand to hand combat weapon to miraculously fight your way out with...WHAT THE HELL DO YOU PICK? This week The Reel Debaters wrangle with weapons from from Kill Bill Volume 1, Braveheart, Army of Darkness and Chronicles of Riddick. In the living room this week is Martin "Danger" Navarro, Mark "I'm inept at geography" Cowell, Steven "Pearls of Wisdom" Taylor and your humble host Micheal "flails in a corner" Petrow. New segments include "Trailer of the week", where we review The Joker and see how it pertains to mental health in North America today and "The Cutting Room Floor" where we shed light on other weapons that never made it to the debate round. Imagine you had the power to get your hands on any space ship from any movie that you've ever seen! Then imagine being able to pilot that ship for a day.... Yeah , awesome I know! This week in on The Reel Debaters its all faster than light travel and hyperdrives as we argue down a long list and decide which one wins the title of "Best space ship to pilot for a day". Ships being argued: Borg Cube (Star Trek) Trimaxion Drone Ship (Flight of The Navigator) Heart of Gold (Hitchhikers Guide) Lando's Millennium Falcon (SOLO) Featuring this week in order of who we would eat first if we were stranded on a deserted island is Martin Navarro, Micheal Petrow , Mark Cowell and special guest Blair Kroker. Tune in to a "end credit" special story regarding Pennywise from "IT" and what it takes to make Martin and Blair "happy" in 2019. This week on The Reel Debaters we go fist to cuff's over what makes a great prison movie. We like options so we kept the rules pretty simple. 1.The primary location needed to take place in penal facility (no flash back scenes where someone did a dime in Attica). 2.The movie had to be about doing time , not just the prison being the location of the movie. Movies being argued this week are Papillon, The Green Mile, Midnight Express and Shawkshank Redemption. Aron Doel, Micheal Petrow , Martin Navarro and Mark Cowell. This week on The Reel Debaters the challenge was simple. I'm sure we've all watched our favourite movie and wondered what it would be like to spend a day with our favourite character. Aron Doell picked Bodi from Point Break, Martin came guns a blazing with Han Solo from Star Wars, Micheal brought Jeffery "The Dude" Lebowski to dinner from The Big Lebowski Steve made his debut and closed out the fight with Forrest Gump. *note the name change, you are not listening to the wrong podcast, great minds think alike and we had to change our name* Email thereeldebaters@gmail.com Instagram @reeldebaters Twitter @reeldebaters Thank you to our sponsor the Toad in the Hole Pub and Eatery. Bob Christie is a Vancouver filmmaker, activist, and scholar exploring the intersections of documentary cinema, entertainment and social justice. His 2009 feature Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride won several festival awards and was broadcast on cable television throughout North America, in Europe and South America. With fifteen years experience in the film and television industry, Bob has also directed and produced a feature documentary about his family that received funding from the National Film Board of Canada, as well as short films, music videos, television commercials and Internet content. In 2014 he completed an MA in Comparative Media Arts at Simon Fraser University with research that focuses on queer documentary cinema and social justice activism. Abstract of MA Research While touring to film festivals with my documentary Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride, I noticed a new attitude in queer cinema. Instead of exploring isolation, difference and separation from mainstream culture, queer cinema of the new millennium places LGBT* people within larger society, often as a vital and valuable part of the broader social fabric. There is also a confidence, optimism, and often an outright joyfulness in recent queer cinema. My research investigates the development of these two trends – the homosocial and joy – in conjunction with theories of affect, queer documentaries, and social justice activism. It follows contemporary scholars, including Nick Davis and Laura Marks, who have expanded on Deleuzian image theories. I argue that LGBT* documentaries of the new millennium expresses reterritorialized queerness that is affecting people individually and collectively, forming social memories and new understandings of gender and sexuality. As well, these processes are accelerating and expanding faster than ever before, due to the affordability of production and distribution made possible by new media technology. Two other central films of the study are United in Anger: A History of Act Up and the hilarious New Zealand favorite Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls. Pride organizer examines the role and relevance of Gay Pride events around the world – from the extremes of protest to the heights of celebration. Winner – Best Film – Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival: Indianapolis IN, USA Winner – Best Documentary (Jury Prize): Image + Nation, Montreal QC, Canada Winner – Best Documentary: Q Cinema Fort Worth TX, USA Winner – Best Documentary: Fairy Tales, Calgary AB, Canada Winner – Best Documentary (Jury & Audience Awards) Three Dollar Bill: Seattle WA, USA Winner – Best Documentary, Out on Film: Atlanta GA, USA Winner – Best Documentary, Reel Pride, Winnipeg MB, Canada Winner – Best Documentary, Inside Out Ottawa Gatineau, Ottawa ON Winner – Best Documentary, Miami LGBT Film Festival, Miami FL, USA Canadian Gala – Victoria Film Festival: Victoria BC, Canada Opening Gala – Boston LGBT Film Festival: Boston MA, USA Official Selection – Cleveland International Film Festival: Cleveland OH, USA Official Selection – Frameline 34: San Francisco CA, USA Official Selection – This Human World: Vienna Austria *Screened at over sixty film festivals and Pride events around the world.* *Showtime USA* *Super Channel Canada* “A riveting and enlightening documentary on the politics and relevance of the global gay pride movement.” –Michael D. Reid, Times Colonist From the elegant symbolism of the empty flatbed concluding Sao Paulo’s mammoth pride parade, to Moscow Pride organizer Nikolai Alekseev’s Byzantine ingenuity and dogged determination, Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride is a moving portrait of international LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Transsexual) struggles for human rights. Vancouver Pride Parade President, Ken Coolen explains the vast differences between marches and parades, and the importance of confronting the “authorities in your own communities,” as he visits countries where attempting to stage pride festivities invites extreme reactions. Director Bob Christie teams up with Aerlyn Weissman (Forbidden Love) in this panoramic meditation on the relationship between Gay Pride and mainstream society. A refreshing and clearly Western perspective on LGBT rights at home and abroad, it features generous footage of local Pride events, and tense yet poignant interviews around the world with an international roster of LGBT human rights heroes. Beyond Gay reflects an emerging trend in which those listless and stagnant Pride celebrations return to their fiercely flamboyant roots – by expressing an international solidarity with oppressed LGBT people everywhere. As Tomasz Baczkowski, President of Warsaw Equality Parade eloquently states, “if it’s a movement, a pride movement… then we should move something.” “An amazing film that needs to be seen by anyone in any community who wants to be moved and have their world view expanded. This is a terrific gift to our collective human rights history.” – Stuart Milk, activist and nephew of the late Harvey Milk. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's Talk About Sex with Damon Jacobs
